5-0 out of 5 stars CLOSE TO PERFECT
The only annoying thing about this great documentary on the famous baseball team is that events are told more than once too often. You sometimes say to yourself that you saw some of the things in the first dvd when you watch the second.Apart from that, this has it all, from the stars of each decade to the singles greatest teams;from the tragic deaths of LOU GEHRIG and THURMAN MUNSON to the MANTLE-MARIS historic 1961 season.Baseball fans can't go wrong by buying this 2 dvd set.I really enjoyed the chapter about the YANKEE STADIUM best. When you think about it,baseball without the YANKEES would not mean the same. They really choose the best moments, although it would have been nice to have an hidden camera to catch all the controversy surrounding REGGIE JACKSON when he was playing there.I would have suggest a wrestling cage match between REGGIE and BILLY MARTIN as a bonus feature.Buy this,it's worth your money, even if the MONTREAL CANADIENS are the all time best on my list.

5-0 out of 5 stars Awesome DVD
If you are a Yankees fan, buy this dvd. If you have a friend who is a Boston fan, buy him this dvd. The Yankees may have lost the 2004 ALCS, but at least they didn't choke for 86 years straight! Suck it Boston fans!

1-0 out of 5 stars Not for baseball deaf fans!
Being deaf and diehard baseball fan hurts me very much because that DVD is nice in images but didn't have any closed captions (cc).
I'm feeling discriminated. If you are deaf or know some deaf people, don't buy or give that DVD for gift. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Bogus champions!
This is the year the refs went to ridiculous lengths to get the Fakers (not a misspelling) into the Finals, right?Waste your money on this bunch of arrogant, overprotected jerks if you want to but they will never be champs in my eyes!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Retrospective
Regardless of what "Laker-haters" may think, this team was an incredible dynasty. Even when it seemed they were on the ropes, someone always stepped up (i.e.-Robert Horry). Jason Kidd was the true 2002 MVP, but the Lakers are still the champions. Sacramento may be upset, but it's their fault. They were challenging, but who won Game 7 of the Western Finals, on the road, in overtime? Kobe and Shaq was a 1-2 punch that was unstoppable. Even though the dynasty is over, they rank as one of the best teams of all time. This is a great DVD because of the inside footage, as well as the extras. Definitely a 10 in my book.

    1-0 out of 5 stars NBA = 2 StarsLakers = 0 Likeable Stars
I respect that the NBA produces these "best of" videos for championship teams. This one is as shoddily produced and quickly knocked off as any of them. However, has there ever been a championship team as smug and unlikeable as the Lakers?Probably not.If you enjoy watching smirking millionaires bathe their egos at the alter of their league-office mandated success go ahead and buy this video. If you actually like sports with real meaning, go watch your local high school basketball team. ... Editorial Review

    Cruel Intentions
This modern-day teen update of Les Liaisons Dangereuses suffered at the hands of both critics and moviegoers thanks to its sumptuous ad campaign, which hyped the film as an arch, highly sexual, faux-serious drama (not unlike the successful, Oscar-nominated Dangerous Liaisons). In fact, this intermittently successful sudser plays like high comedy for its first two-thirds, as its two evil heroes, rich stepsiblings Kathryn (Sarah Michelle Gellar) and Sebastian (Ryan Phillippe), blithely ruin lives and reputations with hearts as black as coal. Kathryn wants revenge on a boyfriend who dumped her, so she befriends his new intended, the gawky Cecile (Selma Blair), and gets Sebastian to deflower the innocent virgin. The meat of the game, though, lies in Sebastian's seduction of good girl Annette (a down-to-earth Reese Witherspoon), who's written a nationally published essay entitled "Why I Choose to Wait." If he fails, Kathryn gets his precious vintage convertible; if he wins, he gets Kathryn--in the sack. When the movie sticks to the merry ruination of Kathryn and Sebastian's pawns, it's highly enjoyable: Gellar in particular is a two-faced manipulator extraordinaire, and Phillippe, usually a black hole, manages some fun as a hipster Eurotrash stud. Most pleasantly surprising of all is Witherspoon, who puts a remarkably self-assured spin on a character usually considered vulnerable and tortured (see Michelle Pfeiffer in Dangerous Liaisons). Unfortunately, writer-director Roger Kumble undermines everything he's built up with a false ending that's true to neither the reconceived characters nor the original story--revenge is a dish best served cold, not cooked up with unnecessary plot twists. --Mark Englehart

    Cruel Intentions 2
There's a reason you haven't heard of this straight-to-video "sequel" to the seamy teen romp that had Ryan Phillippe baring his polished behind: it's twice as bad as the first one and is only worth a look to see just how embarrassing it can get. Writer-director Roger Kumble's original was no classic, Lord knows, but at least the game, nubile cast knew how to smack its lips--his follow-up (which, in tamer form, was to be the pilot for a proposed series called Manchester Prep) can't even pout properly. Phillippe's Sebastian character (here played by a bland, doughy Robin Dunne) is carted back out to be reintroduced to scheming stepsister Kathryn, enacted by a woefully unsexy Amy Adams (Sarah Michelle Gellar played Sebastian's ripe cousin in the first film). The two don't hit it off, and Sebastian--far more sentimental than his big-screen counterpart--immediately decides he's all for love, in the form of pristine deb Danielle (Sarah Thompson). It all amounts to a ponderously cartoonish nothing, including a twist ending that renders everything proceeding it completely incomprehensible. Kumble has the film spouting homilies on love and self-esteem, then randomly throws in bare breasts; it's like a horny Saved by the Bell, without the kick or pacing of good camp. --Steve Wiecking ... 3-0 out of 5 stars First is good, second is eh...
The first Cruel Intentions was such a good movie, Actors you actually hear of, & can relate to(kinda), Sarah M. Gellar, Ryan Phillipe, and Reese Witherspoon were good charactars...The second one is not all that great, for some reason the story seems to be identical to the first, As much as I like the first, I wanted something different for the second, The charactars also had the exact same names, but they are clearly different people, They should have gotten the same actors if they wanted that!!!!!!!! No wonder it was a straight to video release, no one wants to pay to see the same film twice, stick with the first one, and I just got the 3rd(hopefully its a DIFFERENT story), but if I hadnt seen the first, I might have liked the second, but the reason I didnt is because it was the same story with inferior actors/actresses playing the roles, so 4 1/2 stars for the first, 2 1/2 for the second, It averages out to 3 1/2 stars.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best Intentions
This movie is amazing!! I loved it. I watch it every chance I get.

5-0 out of 5 stars Cruel intentions
I loved the first movie (big fan of Sarah Michelle Gellar). The rest of the cast was also great in their roles. The basic plot is that Sebastian and Catherin are step siblings and they have wanted to ahve sex but know they can't (family reasons), so they make a bet that if Sebatian can sleep with Annette (the headmaster's daughter) that he will sleep with Catherine, and if he can't sleep with Annette, Catherine will get his car.The movie takes off from there and it is a great film for a Friday/Saturday night!

The second one, while great for a laugh (horrible acting, the actors do not even resemble the original cast) and it was cut from the series that they were going to make of the movie (Manchester Prep, never aired).

I will give it five stars (not going to punish it because of the prequel) ... Read more

    Editorial Review

On The Road, the most famous of Jack Kerouac's works, is not only the soul of the Beat movement and literature, but one of the most important novels of the century. Like nearly all of Kerouac's writing, On The Road is thinly fictionalized autobiography, filled with a cast made of Kerouac's real life friends, lovers, and fellow travelers. Narrated by Sal Paradise, one of Kerouac's alter-egos, On the Road is a cross-country bohemian odyssey that not only influenced writing in the years since its 1957 publication but penetrated into the deepest levels of American thought and culture. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars The Masterpiece of the Beat Generation
I'd picked the right book when I bought "On the Road" for my introduction to the "beat" scene of the '50s.This book, like no other, captures the spirit of the movement. It's a thrill ride, first page to last, still a wonderful story, and wonderfully told, And of course it's history now too.

Kerouac wrote it on a big, cheap roll of butcher's wrapping paper while flying on benzedrine. But after it was published, he could afford the nicest typing paper.

If you only want to read one book about the beat generation, make it this one. You'll thank me.

5-0 out of 5 stars "What's your road, man?"
I don't think that I have ever read a book that has caught me so off guard. From the start, I was not that excited about the story in Jack Kerouac's On the Road, but as I read further into it, I was captured by this fantastic tale that molds the quintessential representation of the beat generation.Kerouac beautifully captures his life's experiences, as well as the essence of this time period's spirit, and his characters are so intricately represented that you are overwhelmed by the feelings of joy, sadness, rage, disappointment and excitement of all of them through the interesting perspective Sal Paradise provides.Sal and Dean Moriarty travel and hitchhike all over the States exploring every nook and cranny of this country, as well as a brief visit to Mexico, and spend the majority of the book yearning to experience every breath of life passionately and completely. They are ultimately searching for something that always seems to be somewhere out there on the road-themselves.They are constantly looking for more, and want to make sure that they get what they want out of life. What this book ultimately reveals is that you do not need to be having a good time in order to have a good time and love life.On the Road makes you become so connected to Sal and Dean's experience of living a life of chaos, and by the end of the book you almost can reminisce about the same experiences of these two remarkable characters.

5-0 out of 5 stars An Exciting, Breathless, Attempt to "Seize the Day!"
Jack Kerouac wrote this novel about several escapades he took across the country in the late 1940's. He used characters from his real life, such as Allen Ginsburg the poet and author; and Neal Cassidy, Kerouac's idol, and changed their names to use in the story.

In "On The Road", Sal Paradise(Kerouac), a young writer from New York City, ventures to cities around the country, staying with old friends, making new friends, and doing everything he can to stay alive and move on. His mentor and friend, Dean Moriarty(Neal Cassidy), often travels with Sal, always talking, laughing, and being his insane self. Now let's stop and take a brief look at the fascinating life of Dean Moriarty: Throughout the story, Dean plays several different women, has 3 wives and 4 children, half of whom he can't account for ever meeting. He was born in Salt Lake City, and grew up going to reform schools and jail. Dean was an infamous hustler in Texas and Denver who was always stealing cars and money, but never for more then $10 or just when he needed a quick ride. He was insane, always laughing and having a great time, and always getting the most he could out of life. Sal and Dean experienced some great high's and low's of travelling together, seeing such cities as Chicago, Denver, San Francisco, and Mexico City. Throughout the book you get to know the fascinating personalities of Sal, Dean, and several other characters.

Just as important as the story and the characters is the STYLE in which the book is written; it's this style, which gives the book its vibrant, breathless, spontaneous intensity. And, yes, this is where the book really earns its legendary status, because few other books are able to convey the exhilaration and excitement and fun of a mad attempt to "seize the day." On The Road is truly a life-affirming, free-wheeling experience. Along with On The Road, I'd also like to recommend "The Losers' Club: Complete Restored Edition" by Richard Perez, a strange little beat-influenced romance and, weirdly, the second best book I read so far this year. ... Editorial Review

For Igby, a modern teen shackled with the type of jaded cynicism perfected by Holden Caulfield, truly dysfunctional relationships taint his life's riches. Igby's stellar songs, haunted by vague notions of discontent, soundtrack his angst. "We live in a beautiful world," Coldplay's "Don't Panic" asserts, but Chris Martin's chilly croon sounds uneasy; Travis' cover of the Band's "The Weight" also seems world-weary, burdened by a soft country shuffle. The Dandy Warhols' "Boys Better" churns menacingly with their trademark droning harmonies, while the Beta Band's psychedelica ends in a primal jungle celebration of steel drum and chaotic whistles. Even little-known cuts by Underwater Circus and Driftland, along with three melancholy score selections, take on rueful tones. Like About a Boy's Badly Drawn Boy-penned whimsy, however, Igby's pensive emotions are understated. Although a strong undercurrent of sadness trails through most tracks, their nuance inspires empathy rather than pity for Igby--ultimately creating an oddly comforting, even uplifting, album. --Annie Zaleski ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Superman
This book deals with the new Superman of post-1986, the hack reworking of the character by that hack John Byrne.I would have loved a complete guide to the man of steel.I don't like most of the art in this book, which has been done by someone lacking any real knowledge of anatomy (and who seems to love musclebound pinhead bodybuilders). But for all its faults (and the thinness of the book is another big one), for those of us who don't know a lot about the new Superman, it is informative. As with all DK books it is very heavy on illustration, short on text.I could have used a bit more detail.

2-0 out of 5 stars I guess it's okay--if you like the newer Superman.
I should have read some of the earlier reviews on this Website. This book may serve fans of the newer Superman, but it does little for the fans of the older Superman.

Superman comics lost my readership in 1970, when everything turned bigger and shinier.Except for the first 7 pages of the chronology in the back, this book deals exclusively with the additions to the Superman legend which have taken place then. The illustrations and the text are supposed to impress the reader with how great Metropolis is, what a giant corporation LexCorp is, and how terrifying the villains are.

I would gladly trade in all this hyperbole for the writing style of the earlier writers.

5-0 out of 5 stars A must for any Superman fan...
I have been a lifelong fan of Superman. However, I never had the time or money that would allow me to get into the comic book aspect of the franchise. Curiousity finally got the better of me, and I set out to learn more based on how Superman has been perceived through comics. When I received this book, I was blown away at how great it was. Through beautiful illustrations and a detailed account of comic book history, I was able to learn everything I never knew about the Man of Steel. Every aspect of the character is shown in this book, and then some. I loved the way that the book went through Superman's history in chronological order. This made it very easy to learn about Superman's history. I especially enjoyed the detailed section of all the super villans that Superman has encountered. That was one area that I was seriously lacking in. Of course I had heard the names before - Doomsday, Brainiac, Metallo, etc. However, I never knew about their abilities, or what happened when they faced off with Superman. Every major villan is described in detail, which gives you a full understanding of each one. Now maybe I think more of this book than others, because I am a comic book novice. However, ths book was very satisfying to me, and I recommend it to anyone who has always liked Superman, but still has alot to learn. ... Read more

Founder and publisher Jann S. Wenner's brainchild remains the standard by which rock & roll magazines are measured, though even its most fervent boosters would concede there've been some growing pains for RS as it's strived to remain relevant through the decades. The erstwhile baby-boomer bible mixes fleshy covers of today's alluring celebs with coverage of graying rockers from the magazine's heyday. In addition to celebrity interviews, stalwart features such as CD reviews and Random Notes (the mag's long-running gossip section) provide familiar reading for older readers, as does the publication's superior political and cultural coverage. But the bulk of Rolling Stone's features are aimed at the younger pop-culture set. --Steven Stolder ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Corporate magazines still suck
Rolling Stone hasn't been a credible music journal for at least 15 years, and that's being extremely kind.Rather they are a marketing outlet for the corporate sponsors of whatever music is being pushed at the moment. That's of course when they deign to write about music at all. There are far too many politically oriented articles from an upper middle class armchair liberal point of view to catagorize Rolling Stone as strictly a music magazine. And let's not mention the extremely annoying fashion layouts.RS is more of a lifestyle journal that panders to white and mostly liberal middle class tastes and culture.I don't care about the political bent of the magazine so much as I care about the pop garbage that Rolling Stone writes about. They almost without exception shill for the flavor of the month rather than write any responsible criticism.Occasionally the articles are informative, but for the most part Rolling Stone is an irrelevant device to generate advertising dollars.

1-0 out of 5 stars You get what you pay for
Isn't it amazing that the cost of a Rolling Stone subscription is barely enough to cover the cost of postage? The magazine is mostly advertisements, and the rest of it isn't worth reading.I grew up on Rolling Stone, but have realized that if I want a decent music review about music I care about, I'll go to pitchforkmedia.com.Even SPIN is better than this crap.

1-0 out of 5 stars RS: "Music Experts" who don't know CRAP about music.
Anyone who would consider putting a list of the 100 Greatest Artists ever without Pink Floyd, Queen, or Metallica has no knowledge of music whatsoever.

Also who the hell would put Kurt Cobain and Jack White on a list of the 100 greatest guitarists ever above Eddie Van Halen and Randy Rhoads? Also not to mention that they didn't even include Slash or Malmsteem on the list.

This magazine makes me sick to the stomach. Basically all they do is praise artists who have good lyrics but crappy music, like Bob Dylan. They also need to get over their constant worship of U2, because even when they put out those 2 awful albums 'Zooropa' and 'Pop', they did nothing but praise them for their over-produced experimental crap.

And what can we say about their devotion towards 'The White Stripes' and 'The Strokes' and hail them as the BEST NEW THING, while we've been waiting for years for these people to make albums worth their praise. Yet, Rolling Stone rather ignores great new artists like Muse, Franz Ferdinand, and Keane.

I know you guys are probably potheads, but perhaps you should consider putting the hash pipe to the side and think about what you write because it's hurting the REAL ARTISTS. ... Read more

Leave it to Jane Pratt, the young maverick editor of Jane, to name a magazine after herself. Jane (her readers call her by her first name) and her best friends (who just happen to work at Jane) gossip about what to wear to that cool party, who is the gutsiest or wimpiest celebrity, or which cold medicine tops the road test ("Phlegm Be Damned"). I received a Jane subscription as a gift. If I had paid for it, I would immediately call, cancel my subscription, and demand a refund. This magazine is 50% advertisements, and 50% shallow articles trying to convince the reader how cool and important the editor and writers are. There's one major article in each mag but even those are filled with dumb little quips about the writer or Jane staff instead of the celebrity or important event. If you want to spend money on a magazine that one group of immature, narcissistic, and empty-headed women started to convince people how great they are, this magazine is for you.

I bought this book after surprisingly seeing a picture of my deceased aunt on the cover. This discovery was the first notice that anyone in my family was given of including our departed relative in the book.Mr. Nuwer created his entire account of hazing related to my family member WITHOUT CONTACTING ANYONE IN MY FAMILY.Needless to say, he took his liberties by piecing together stories from local press to suit the aim of his book. The negligent manner in which he wrote the story about my aunt makes me wonder about the diligence of the remainder of his research. My family was disgusted at his portrayal of the situation and saddened at this unauthorized rehashing.

Worst of all, Mr. Nuwer presented a simple college prank gone awry as hazing. In this case, the incident was a playful joke amongst friends which ended very sadly. If he had gone through the proper channels and contacted the people actually involved, this would have become clear.Mr. Nuwer desperately wanted to prove his point about the evils of hazing and grasped at whatever available straw needed.

And, incidently, he is not against the abolition of fraternities either - so before you go off on someone next time, do a little research, it helps.

If the challenge is to Greeks to read about the horrors of hazing, I think it should from a different source.I am quite tired of non-Greeks painting fraternities and sororities as these black-hearted, behind-closed-doors operations.National Fraternities (to my experience, since I am male) generally have anti-hazing speeches before pledging and have the pledges sign vows that they will report hazing. This text focuses on the ugliness and mistakes of a few and generalizes it to the whole population.I think that the hazing described here is from our parents' past and not what goes on now.I am sick of groups of men and women who rally behind a few Greek letters getting more criticism than any similar group (eg. athletics teams) who don't have such letters.Hazing for sports teams is still rampant... don't blame the Greeks. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Enjoyable Read
When the latest "What's Hot" list gets published, there is no doubt that the H2 will occupy a top slot. This brief, but fun book gives anice insight into the development of the H2, and outlines (for the first time I've ever read), the brilliant deal that brought GM and Humvee together to create and market the lastest designer wheels.
The GM/AM General (AM is the firm that produced the original Humvee) deal, which combined the branding and economic power of GM with the uniqueness and techincal genius of the Humvee team allowed both parties to get exactly what they wanted, and brought the H2 to the general public far quicker than either one on their own could have. The development and launching of the H2 should be required reading for both engineering and marketing students.
The story falls a bit as it tries to categorize the H2 driver into one of two classes, and makes a few too many generalizations as to market appeal.
There are some great photos, and some interesting development stories about future Hummer/GM vehicles (2 more are scheduled to hit the market by 2010) ... Read more

    Editorial Review

Despite the piercings and spiky hairdos of Good Charlotte frontmen Joel and Benji Madden, the filth and the fury of punk are not in evidence on The Young and the Hopeless. Rather, Good Charlotte lean toward the sunny power pop favored by the lighter Huntingdon Beach, California, outfits. Nevertheless, with the title track and "The Anthem" ("I'm just a minor threat"), the band appeals directly to high-school outsiders. Relationship problems are delved into in "Wondering" and "Say Anything," and they even find space to explore comic horror with "My Bloody Valentine." So they're not as intense or enraged as the hardcore likes of Black Flag or even Linkin Park. But the undeniably strong melodies this bunch comes up with have plenty of appeal on their own terms. --Dominic Wills ... Read more

This is just a fun cd to throw on.There is one song in particular that i really enjoyed which is Hold on.This is about the strongest song on this cd.There arent many songs on this cd that have such a deep message. This cd will be enjoyable for 13 year olds and it can occasionally be thrown in the stereo of anyone older and still be enjoyable.

    4-0 out of 5 stars I'm a girl but I'm not 13
(...) I was once a thirteen year old girl and I like to think I had fairly decent taste in music. I am now 30. I like Good Charlotte. I don't understand what everyone's gripe is. They certainly are not punk. Who said they were? Someone mentioned they are trying to be hardcore by having tattoos. Really? I have numerous tattoos and 17 piercings. Guess what? I'm not attempting to be punk or hardcore. I just happen to like body art. Could it be that the members of this band just have a preference for tattoos and are not trying to make a statement.

I think you guys take this whole music thing too seriously. The music is catchy, it is fun. Is it genius? No. But who cares. It is still entertaining. You who have written negative reviews seem to be taking this all very personally. I certainly hope your lives are more fulfilling than they appear.

3-0 out of 5 stars In Search of Tiger : A Journey Through Golf With Tiger Woods
In Search of Tiger: A Journey Through Golf with Tiger Woods, written by Tom Callahan, was a good book. I enjoyed reading this book because it compared other golfers to Tiger Woods. The only problem with this book is that it talked about many other professional golfers such as Arnold Palmer and Jack Nicklaus but very little about Tiger Woods. This book is not quite a biography but the author does talk about some of the tournaments Tiger Woods' participated in.In the book, I was able to see the comparison between Tiger and his father and other golfers and their fathers. The book was still very interesting. It was a detailed book and described Callahan's meetings with the professional golfers.I could see the influence Tiger Woods has already made in the PGA and his capabilities in the golf game. This book is not what I expected so if you are looking for a biography, do not read this book.

3-0 out of 5 stars Not quite
This book is a compelling read for someone with a starting knowledge of and interest in Tiger Woods, but it doesn't quite make you feel like you've found Tiger. The book seems to be too choppy, more a series of isolated chapters thrown in that dont seem to connect. And there are too many questions that you are left with after reading it.If you're going to brag that you covered Tiger at all his first 8 majors, why have chapters only on the 3 in 2000?And if you're going to focus on those, why soak them with background info and then glaze over the tremendous performances?Callahan's description of Tiger during the 2000 PGA is particularly weak; why he decides to condense that great final round with May and the great back nine and the putts on 18 and 16 the second time around into about a page and a half befuddled me.And most of all, why devote so much of the book to learning about golfers other than Tiger? It's true that if you were to write the definitive, thoroughly detailed Tiger book, you could not ignore Lefty, Sergio, Ernie, etc.But when the chapters on the other golfers seem to take up half of this relatively short book, you've gone too far. It's true that this book is well written and will provide you with some nice tidbits about Tiger (such as the fact that his mother was the one to get him to wear red on Sundays), but you will likely leave the book hoping for more detail, more coherence, and more depth.

5-0 out of 5 stars Tom Callahan Pens the Definitive Tiger Bio
There is simply no sportswriter on earth with as much meticulous insight into the minds of both the golfing legends of old and the stars of today as Tom Callahan.Admittedly, my expectations were lofty going in here, esp. after reading the astounding accolades bestowed upon Callahan on the book jacket alone -- from the likes of Costas, Kornheiser, Jenkins, Reilly, Nicklaus, and others.Thankfully, for once, they were all right. This book is indeed the whole package on Tiger, presented (ingeniously) not only via Tiger's own eyes, but those of his peers and predecessors. The golf history in the book is cleverly detailed yet pleasurably digestible. The first hand interviews with Tiger and his family are unprecedented. And the "Journey", for anyone REALLY interested in Tiger, is remarkably satisfying.Kudos to Tom Callahan for giving the sports world the preeminent Tiger bio. ... Editorial Review

In the past, Antonia Fraser's bestselling histories and biographies have focused on people and events in her native England, from Mary Queen of Scots to Faith and Treason: The Story of the Gunpowder Plot. Now she crosses the Channel to limn the life of France's unhappiest queen, bringing along her gift for fluent storytelling, vivid characterization, and evocative historical background. Marie Antoinette (1755-93) emerges in Fraser's sympathetic portrait as a goodhearted girl woefully undereducated and poorly prepared for the dynastic political intrigues into which she was thrust at age 14, when her mother, Empress Maria Theresa, married her off to the future Louis XVI to further Austria's interests in France. Far from being the licentious monster later depicted by the radicals who sent her to the guillotine at the height of the French Revolution, young Marie Antoinette was quite prudish, as well as thoroughly humiliated by her husband's widely known failure to have complete intercourse with her for seven long years (the gory details were reported to any number of concerned royal parties, including her mother and brother). She compensated by spending lavishly on clothes and palaces, but Fraser points out that this hardly made her unique among 18th-century royalty, and in any case the causes of the Revolution went far beyond one woman's frivolities. The moving final chapters show Marie Antoinette gaining in dignity and courage as the Revolution stripped her of everything, subjected her to horrific brutalities (a mob paraded the head of her closest female friend on a pike below her window), and eventually took her life. Fraser makes no attempt to hide the queen's shortcomings, in particular her poor political skills, but focuses on her personal warmth and noble bearing during her final ordeal. It's another fine piece of popular historical biography to add to Fraser's already impressive bibliography. --Wendy Smith ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Not Thorough Enough (3 1/2 stars)
The biggest problem with Antonia Fraser's 2001 biography of the doomed Queen of France is not that she's an unabashed cheerleader for Marie Antoinette (which she undoubtedly is).The problem is that the reader gets very little understanding of why the "Widow Capet" was so hated by the French people.

The book is quite convincing when discussing her trials and tribulations:the domineering maternal presence of Maria Theresa, the sexual awkwardness of Louis XVI, the deaths of two of her children, the lurid and profane lies printed about her in the underground press, and the almost daily horrors inflicted upon her by the French Revolution which are too numerous to mention here, leading to her execution.

Fraser does not give an adequate enough background as to why the French Revolution took place. She states (on the book's final page) that reform was desperately needed in French society. Why?The reader is given no background into the desperate plight of the French people, the misery and abject poverty in which they lived. How their lives weren't getting better, their political disenfranchisement, and how they were constantly marginalized by the Catholic Church, the monarchy and the aristocracy.

Taking this background into consideration, it becomes apparent why Marie Antoinette's incessant gambling and the construction of her Petit Trianon, although less ostentatious than the tastes of Louis XIV, caused such anger among the French people. When your own people can't afford a loaf of bread, building a wee chateau for yourself isn't likely to win you many friends.

Fraser merely glosses over these facts, leaving the reader with the impression that the French public was totally and completely irrational in their hatred of their Queen.I'm not saying they weren't unfair to Marie Antoinette, but you must look at it in the broader context.

Overall, Fraser spends so much time exalting the "goodness" of Marie Antoinette, that I never got the feeling of what it would be like to actually KNOW her (the feeling I get when reading a truly excellent biography).Marie Antoinette was unfairly villainized for so many years, now the pendulum has swung the other way.The truth lies in between.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent read..wish ending was better for Marie!
I was so sad to have this book end! As you read the book, you learn to appreciate Marie for the person she was. There were so many facts about her life that I did not know. As you turn the pages, you share her good times and bad times. I wish the ending was better...but she was courageous to the end. Sorry that she had such a rotten ending. Buy this book!

5-0 out of 5 stars The very best biography of a complex and interesting woman
Every elementary school student knows all about Marie Antoinette... the selfish, petty queen who said "let them eat cake!" and had her head chopped off.She is the byword for upper-class excess, for the demolition of monarchy, and for ditziness.Visitors to Versailles can wander around her strange little village, where she play-acted at being a commoner, and shake their heads, glad to live in a 21st century democracy.

This book cuts through the incredible amount of mythology that surrounds Marie Antoinette, and offers an excellent study of someone who you may be shocked to discover was actually an extremely complex character. You might even be surprised at the origin of the infamous baked-goods comment. You will certainly come away from this book feeling sorry for this much-maligned lady, who certainly was not perfect but was also absolutely not the monster that we teach our children about.

Mr. Frasier is one of the most talented historians writing today, and it is great to see her turn her attention to the other side of the Channel. Her research is, as always, impecable and her writing style is neat, accessible, and interesting.Long-time fans of Ms. Frasier will be thrilled with this book, and people who are unfamiliar with her work on Renaissance England will have a wonderful introduction to her work. ... Editorial Review

The era of Molly Ringwald's profitable collaboration with writer-producer-director John Hughes (Sixteen Candles, The Breakfast Club) was at its peak with this 1986 film (directed by Howard Deutch but in every sense part of the developing Hughes empire). Ringwald plays a high school girl on the budget side of the tracks, living with her warm and loving father (Harry Dean Stanton) and usually accompanied by her insecure best friend (Jon Cryer). When a wealthy but well-meaning boy (Andrew McCarthy) asks her out, her perspective is overturned and Cryer's character is threatened. As was the case in the mid-'80s, Hughes (who wrote the script and produced the film) brought his special feel for the cross-currents of adolescent life to this story. In its very commercial way, it is an honest, entertaining piece about growing pains. The attractive supporting cast (many of whom are much better known now) does a terrific job, and Ringwald and Cryer have excellent chemistry. --Tom Keogh ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars nice flick for anyone!
I am a huge fan of the 80's and this movie is really one of the reasons why! This movie includes so many great scenes and such great acting, I don't know how anyone coudln't love it! Molly Ringwald shows off her witty attitude in this fun flick. Anyone can watch it and have a great time, laughing and crying at this beautiful story about a sweet, poor girl and handsome, rich guy.

YOu can never get tired of this movie, because each time you watch it the more fun it is. Andie is a poor girl who is really a truly amzing person inside, but she has feelings and emotions like everyone else. She and a handsome guy who goes to her school and has a lot more money than she does show off their impressive, fun, and totally 80's story. This movie is overall perfect for anyone!

5-0 out of 5 stars Definitely a classic!
This 80's flick needs to be in every movie collection. Especially for all young girls who are trying to fit in but at the same time wanting to keep your individuality. Mollie Ringwald is excellent in this film as she challenges those characters like the extremely annoying James Spader and the snotty girls in her gym class that think she is weird. Duckie is awesome as her best friend and major supporter, along with her friend, Iona.
I cry at the end when she and "Blaine" are in the parking lot at the gym and he tells her "I love you."
    Classic, classic, classic.

3-0 out of 5 stars Pales in comparison to other Hughes/Ringwald collaborations.
1986 brought the third of three John Hughes / Molly Ringwald movies, "Pretty in Pink", and I'm afraid it's the worst of the three.

The storyline asks us to suspend disbelief over and over again, Molly's character seems weak and childish at times, and Jon Cryer is just annoying as the misfit "Duckie".

I am a huge Molly Ringwald fan, but "Pretty in Pink" is certainly a step down from the heights of "The Breakfast Club" and the pinnacle of "Sixteen Candles".

On a side note, Annie Potts is great (as usual) in a supporting role.

"Pretty in Pink" will be a necessary purchase for any 80s, Brat Pack, Hughes, or Ringwald fan, but it lacks a certain "something" that the other movies seem to have. ... Read more

    Editorial Review

This packed double-disc is the slim option for fans who find the Eagles' vaunted greatest hits sets too little and the boxed set too hefty. Hit singles large and medium are here, often ("One of These Nights," "Hotel California") still sounding definitive and even tough. Large helpings of favorite album cuts are also included, along with a taster from a promised 2004 Eagles studio reunion. Unfortunately, "Hole in the World," Don Henley's response to September 11, feels just as empty and entitled as "Get Over It," the band's previous state-of-the-union message (from which the newer song represents a philosophical 180-degree turn). But for those seeking an overview of this Southern California juggernaut's successes, as well as telling comments from band members--mostly Henley and Frey--in a well-designed booklet, Very Best will more than do. --Rickey Wright ... 5-0 out of 5 stars a fantastic eagles compilation
not very much needs to be written about the greatness of this eagles compilation from the great don henly and glen frey.this contains superb classics like hotel california, tequila sunrise, one of these nights.the fragrance of this superb eagles compilation can be smelt from the us till japan.hugely recommended.

5-0 out of 5 stars Ahh.. Nothing Better Than The Eagles Crystal Clear
This is the best Eagles set without going overboard with too many discs.Like a box set. With these being remastered i wasnt really sure if there was going to be a difference in the sound. But after listening back to my "Greatest Hits 1971-1975" and "Greatest Hits Vol.2 there is.I know some people complained they left off some minor Eagles hits here. But how picky can you be? You still get the best Eagles songs ever! And the new single "Hole In The World" is not that bad of a song like you people make it out to be.I don't understand why some people when it comes to the Eagles everybody is so critical of their work.Anyways the one thing i didn't like about this set was the song "Please Come Home For Christmas".Was it really needed for this cd?I don't think so.Then they stick it at track 6.They could've put it as the last track on disc two.Makes ya wonder why they do stuff like that. This is a digi-pak package to warn you.So if you don't want the cardboard case banged up,better take care of it.The booklet inside has comments and stories about each song from Don Henley and Glenn Frey.A must have for any rock collection!Enjoy!

5-0 out of 5 stars Cheaper than the box, better than buying both Greatest Hits
This 2CD set exemplifies what a well-done best of should do: it assembles together both all their chart hits along with the best album tracks of the band and paints a picture of what they were about.

Listening to this you can hear the band's more country side ("Peaceful Easy Feeling","Desperado","Lyin' Eyes") to their hard rockin' side ("Those Shoes","Heartache Tonight","Life in the Fast Lane"). This set makes Greatest Hits 1971-1975 (ASIN B000002GVS) and Greatest Hits Vol. 2 (ASIN B000002H1C) obsolete, since all the tracks from those 2 are contained here in remastered form.

The bonuses come from what's added here: their classic cover of Christmas song "Please Come Home for Christmas", rockabilly tribute "James Dean", HOTEL CALIFORNIA standout tracks "Wasted Time" and "The Last Resort", and latter day ballad "Love will Keep Us Alive."

9-11 elegy "Hole in the World" and diatribe "Get Over It" don't equal the California band's best material but they're enjoyable.

    BOTTOM LINE:
If you only want to buy one Eagles CD, this is the one to get. If you find yourself loving this and wanting more, I'd go for concept album DESPERADO next. ... Read more
