Toshiba MW27FN1 27" TV-DVD-VCR Combo with FST PURE Flat Screen
Average Customer Review: 3.5 out of 5 stars
    Electronics
    list price: $699.99
US | Canada | United Kingdom | Germany | France

    Editorial Review

Great for apartments, space-restricted living rooms, or even bedrooms, the broad, 27-inch MW27FN1--Toshiba's largest DVD/VCR combination set--delivers the quality of DVD and the convenience of a VCR, all in one space-saving unit cased in Toshiba's classy silver exterior. The set's FST PURE flat tube eliminates intrusive reflections from ambient light relative to conventional CRT designs and broadens the angles from which the screen may be viewed. Front-panel audio/video inputs accommodate hookups of a camcorder or gaming console, while a front-panel headphone jack grants listening privacy.

The four-head, hi-fi/stereo VCR offers eight-event, one-month programming and digital auto tracking. The set offers stereo sound through two front-firing speakers, which derive a heightened sense of stereo separation from their double-baffle design. Both Dolby Digital and DTS 5.1-channel surround-sound signals can be routed through the player's coaxial digital-audio output for direct connection to an audio/video receiver.

Use the "on" timer as an alarm clock to wake up to a favorite movie, or have the set turn off automatically when viewing in the evening (up to 360 minutes in either case). Violent or sexually explicit programming can be identified and blocked using V-Chip, prohibiting viewing by young children.

1-0 out of 5 stars Toshuba 27" TV
The TV arrived damaged with two big dents on the front and sides.I was told that TV's 27" or bigger are non refundable,if they arrive in a damaged state, that the only alternatives were to either re-sell it as damaged goods or take it back.I took it back, plugged it in,and there is a huge black square in the middle of the screen.
I would not recommend anyone to buy a TV on Amazon that is 27" or larger!!

1-0 out of 5 stars Received a "lemon"
I read the reviews on this TV/Combo before I purchased it.I am sorry to say perhaps I have received a bad one.Not even a month after I purchased this - I am having problems with the DVD getting "stuck".We are very careful with our electronics and there is no reason why this unit should be doing this.Right now - the DVD is open and will not close - this is probably the 4th time it has done this.I purchased a much cheaper Panaconic combo for my mother a year ago and it has had absolutely no problems at all.I wished I would have saved myself about $200 and purchased a Panasonic for my home as well.

5-0 out of 5 stars Simple and works well
This is a larger version of the 24 inch, which I bought for a vacation home. Both are truly plug and play if you have cable. I was sceptical about a 3-in-1 device, but no longer-the simplicity is welcome.Very good set for someone who is not a techie nor a home theatre type but wants good quality and simplicity of operation. Sound is better than the 24 inch, althoght I would not play string quartets on it. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars No other weekly like it
This is, plainly put, the best news periodical out there.Sure, others can "report" what's happening in the world, but The Economist includes analysis and puts events in proper perspective to provide the much sought after "why?".Upon hearing of the magazine, the title seemed to suggest a dry, tough read about finance and economics. Not so at all. It's sort of like an international, intelligent version of Time or Newsweek, with a more objective and rational feel. It's a surprisingly easy read as well, with a great informal British style, infused with wit throughout yet always smart and informative.Well worth the price.

5-0 out of 5 stars If you're going to read only one news periodical . . .
The Economist should be it.It is the most thorough single news periodical out there, period.Enjoy.

5-0 out of 5 stars It Really Is That Good
Read one Economist article, and you'll know why it's considered in a league of its own, and why everyone from business leaders to Prime Ministers to regular people like you and me love it so much.

One of the best attributes the Economist possesses is its ability to present news and analysis on an unsurpassed intellectual level, while at the same time being very much down to earth, at times even getting comical commentary in. I have never once read an article where I sensed bias. I'm very good at detecting bias, and even when it perhaps is bias I'm inclined with, it ruins the legitimacy for me. You'll notice they do not attribute articles to specific authors. This is because the magazine wants each article to represent the Economist as a whole, and not a particular person. It's a refreshing formula, in an age where some writers feel the need to be long winded and rush to grab individual attention at every turn.

The Economist has been around for 150+ years for good reason. It holds incredible integrity, and it doesn't cater to anyone.

For international news and perspective in particular, I have yet to find a weekly publication on the Economist's level for the mere reason there are none. I'm a student in International Affairs, and the insight and rationality found in the pages devoted to the world, 1/3 of each issue in fact, is the crowning jewel of the magazine. That's in addition to its coverage on business, finance, technology, arts and books. It's truly a complete package.

You probably couldn't do anything better to improve your mind and worldview with a little over $100 than to buy an Economist subscription. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars GORGEOUS MAGAZINE
Did it ever occur to the few reviewers here who criticize this magazine because of its super-expensive designer clothing ads and extravagant articles on the lives of the rich and famous that maybe "W" is a magazine that's published exclusively for people who ARE rich? I mean, don't all those Versace or Dolce & Gabbana ads serve as kind of a small hint? Uh, hello?

Whatever, though. This is a great magazine for anybody who's interested in fashion and glamour photography. And though in all honesty I would have to agree that it may not necessarily be the most interesting magazine of its kind to read (I never read fashion magazines anyways), it is nevertheless the most beautiful. And for $4.50 an issue, it is easily accessible for fans of this kind of photography who don't want to spend $75 or more on a Mario Testino book, whose not-too-bad work sometimes appears here.

5-0 out of 5 stars WORTH THE PRICE
What do fine dining, high fashion, celebrities, beauty tips, travel, exceptional photography, and entertainment all have in common? They can be found in W magazine. A magazine of women's interests, W is a huge publication measuring approximately 9" X 13". Which is one reason I like it, it's like getting a magazine from the 1940's with 21st century fashions. I would put it in the same category as Vogue. Anyone will love viewing W., but it's not hard to figure out who it's mainly aimed at, especially when you occasionally see jewelry priced between $20,000 and $200,000, and when you notice who some of the advertisers are, namely Prada, Calvin Klein, and Armani.W also has superb photography, photography that borders on Art. I have a subscription and share it with family and friends, then place it in my collection( I collect magazines ).
If you like magazines such as Vogue and Harper's Bizarre, you are sure to love this fine publication. ... Read more

    Editorial Review

Vogue lives by the maxim that you can't be too rich or toothin--or have too many ad pages. But the glossy spreads of broomstick-thin supermodels draped in Prada and Chanel, and the endless pages of ads for the finest clothes, accessories, and makeup the beauty industry has to offer, help make it the leading magazine of women's style. Fashion is the main event, but every issue attends society parties, goes inside the home of a celebrity designer, and travels to an exotic resort or vacation spot. Like Playboy, Vogue is a magazine you can claim to read because the articles are good. Famously, the September fall fashion issue can easily top 700 pages. --Katherine Koberg ... Read more

Not for the interviews. Vogue is about fashion. I read it to stay up with what's what.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Highly Sought After Collectible
If it is in Vogue, it IS in fashion! This magazine, which has existed since 1892, is one of the premier magazines for women. It is an American magazine, but also has Australian, Brazilian, British, French, German, Italian, and Spanish Editions. It covers fashion, beauty, health, fitness, celebrities, movies, art, and other topics of interest to women. Vogue is mainly directed at the Jet-Set, but anyone will find its pages both entertaining, and informative. I have a subscription to it, and I collect it on the basis of its collectibility. Mine arrive in clear plastic bags, which are never opened (unless of course one of my favorite celebritie's is on the cover). I wish all magazine publishers used the clear bag method of shipping, because an subscription label directly on the cover of a magazine is frowned upon by most collectors. So unless you buy it right off the shelf, or it is bagged, most collectors will not be interested in it. Getting back to Vogue, if you want to keep up with what is IN in fashion, this is the magazine to have. You know those $1,000 dresses you've heard about? You'll find many of them modeled in here! Fashions photographed by some of the world's most renowned photographers, are featured in the magazine. If you're someone who enjoys reading about the Elite in women's topics, you'll want to subscribe to VOGUE.

5-0 out of 5 stars Read it for the interviews
The clothes are fun to look at too - even though most of us can't even dream about buying stuff by Prada or Carolina Herrera. Maybe that's WHY Vogue is so much fun. This mag evades the snob category by covering very serious subjects in its articles and interviews, and they do slip in affordable fashions for the average woman.Fun, so it rates a five for me ... "Inside of me there's a thin woman trying to get out," complains the ever-suffering Edina. "Are you sure it's just the one, dear?" asks her mother.

When anyone raves about Sex and the City, you need only to remind her that the Brits did it first--and better--with the creation of the brave say-anything show about sex, drugs, and the battle of the bulge. Absolutely Fabulous is a groundbreaking, off-the-wall comedy from the early 1990s, which began with a skit from The French and Saunders Show, about a moral, uptight daughter and her extremely loose mother. Ab Fab has taken this to the extreme. Edina (Jennifer Saunders) is the queen of excess. Her clothes are outrageous, her attempts at weight loss comical, and her efforts at motherhood (her daughter, Saffron--played to perfection by Julia Sawalha--is a practical-minded, reliable teenager) are uneven at best. Eddy's best friend is Patsy, a promiscuous Ivana Trump look-alike who always has a cigarette between her lips, a drink in her hand, and a fine-looking man (or boy) in her bed. The entire show lasted for three seasons, and all are included in this set. From organizing an orgy to a brush with poverty to the death of Eddy's father, nothing--and we mean nothing--is sacred in this show. Without a doubt, Ab Fab is one of the greatest television satires created, although keep in mind that it's strictly for adults. --Jenny Brown ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Absolutely Fabuleux!
I saw it as a teenager in Singapore and it is one of the most amazing shows ever out there- the no holds barred humour, nothing is off topic makes this comedy one of the best out there with its honesty and unapolegetic tone. Quotes from the show have become staple in my life- I especially love the epsisode Death.

Edina: Life is a mystery. Everyone must stand alone...
Saffron: That's lovely. Who said that?
    Edina: It's Madonna...

Though for some strange reason, the scene is cut from the DVD but on tv, it is aired.

5-0 out of 5 stars Absolutely Brilliant
I started watching this show as reruns in '96 on Comedy Central and could not believe I was actually seeing the results of rare comedic geniuses. Not many things crack me up anymore, but I was hooked after seeing this.It even inspired me to visit London for the first time. This is one of those rare syzygical moments in comedy that will always be remembered. A must have unless you're an uptight conservative snob! Get 4 DVD set only. The newer DVD set is funny, but the magic is hardly there any more.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Best British Comedy Ever!!
To me, Absolutely Fabulous will never get old!!Eddy and Patsy are two of the funniest people I have ever seen on TV!!I'll have to admit, at first I thought that Patsy and Eddy were only seen as gay icons throughout the world.Buying this collection just goes to show that ANYONE can enjoy the hilarious situations that these two women go through, with a whole bunch of people surrounding them making each episode that much more funny!!!I highly recommend this and any other Absolutely Fabulous DVD to anyone!!! ... Editorial Review

To the ranks of shows too brilliant and outrageous for prime time (The Ben Stiller Show, Andy Richter Controls the Universe), add Seth McFarland's Family Guy. This animated series, which debuted after the 1999 Super Bowl, simply sparked too much controversy and offended too many sensibilities to survive (Entertainment Weekly dubbed it "the Awful Show They Just Keep Putting on the Air"). That the Fox network also played hackysack with its schedule, ensuring viewers would not be able to find it, sealed its fate (it was cancelled in 2002). This boxed set containing all 28 episodes from the first two seasons is payback for the show's devoted cult following, who may be moved to echo the words of infant Stewie Griffin, the megalomaniacal 1-year-old bent on matricide and world domination: "Victory is mine!"

The dysfunctional Griffins of Quahog, Rhode Island, invite comparisons to The Simpsons. The testicular-chinned father, Peter Griffin, is a clueless oaf in the Homer mold. "Peter, what did you promise me last night?" asks his long-suffering wife Lois in one episode. "That I wouldn't drink at the stag party," he replies. "And what did you do?" she asks. "Drank at the stag part--oh ho ho, I almost walked into that one," he cackles. Other family members include teenage daughter Meg, a desperate high school social pariah; 13-year-old son Chris, a chip off his father's blockhead; and Brian, the family's sarcastic talking dog. But this series' true inspiration is football-pated Stewie (voiced by McFarlane, who earned an Emmy), who was born to be a Bond villain once he escaped his mother's "ovarian bastille." Family Guy recklessly ventured where The Simpsons feared to tread. In one episode, Meg's one and only friend turns out to be the member of a suicidal cult. In another, Death (voiced by Norm McDonald) becomes an unwanted houseguest. Each episode plays fast and furious with surreal flashes (in one episode, Peter turns his house into a puppet) and pop-culture references and TV, movie, and commercial parodies that invite repeated viewings. Freed from its own family-hour bastille and the whims of dim network executives, Family Guy can be appreciated at last on its own profane, sacrilegious, and irreverent terms. Welcome to the DVD family, Griffins. --Donald Liebenson ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Who Would Be A Stupid Dumb Idiot To Watch This Stupid Show!
I agree with the review and it was titled This Show Is Not Funny At All. But anyways i hate family guy. I wish this show was cancelled because this show is stupid. I don`t know why people are saying this show is funny. Peter and Lois argue and thats boring and stupid. The Simpsons are better than this stupid show. Homer is way funny and better than Peter. Chris is stupid and annoying. Maggie is better than Stewie. You know what something is stupid because how can a one-year-old baby talk. Thats stupid. Maggie don`t talk. So don`t waste your money on this crap. I suggest that y`all waste on The Simpsons because it has a lot of laughs.

4-0 out of 5 stars An icredibly funny show but...
it loses a star for being so, so unoriginal. The griffins are basicly the Simpson family only more extreme in most senses. Peter is Homer only fatter and stupider. Plus they have a stupider son, avery socially inept daughter, and Lois is the same patriarchal mother figure as Marge. Stuwey is pretty much Maggie only even smarter (and pretty much a rip-off of Rex in the episode where Ralph falls in love with Lisa) I can say though that Brian is pretty original.

5-0 out of 5 stars The simpsons has competition
Family guy is hilarious. It's funny, fast, and cool. The way everything talks in the show, and of course some of the funniest jokes ever on a sitcom.

It may seem like a rip-off of the simpsons, but It has things that make it different. First is the humor. the humor isn't exactly for children. They use cuss words like bastard, and make racial comments that will offend some people. the characters aren't alike. peter is way more stupid than homer. The baby is a crazy baby. The dog talks. There are no cats in the family. The son is not a trouble maker. And Meg isn't exactly a brain like Lisa. Lois is the only one Marge can relate too.

The humor is hilarious. Original jokes, knock-offs of culture, and more. Another thing is the way it bends from reality. Like Peter falling asleep on a fork, and a baby that actually wanders around town. he went to the Airport once.

the thing that beats the simpons is the music. the sompsons theme song is annoying after 16 years. the numbers are great and enjoyable to watch. The simspons only really good number was everybody hates Ned Flanders.

The one downside is the special features. Ony a total pf 8 commentary episodes were recorded. That's bad cause there are many jokes i don't get but are not explained because there are no commentary on the episodes that have the joke. And it has no special features but stupid promos and a dumb behind the scenes.

If you are tired of those stupid shows like King of the hill, this show is probaly one should check out. But remember T=the rating TV14.Also check out americian dad, ... Read more

    Editorial Review

America's first family of dysfunction, the Simpsons, appear in all their depraved glory in this wonderful DVD compilation of their show's premiere season. Fans accustomed to the slick appearance of the later episodes will be delighted by the rougher nature of these earlier episodes, when the characters weren't as well defined (Homer isn't quite as dumb as he is in later seasons) and the animation was still evolving. This only adds to the charm of these 13 episodes, which begin with "Simpsons Roasting on an Open Fire," the December 1989 Christmas special in which a down-and-out Simpson family adopt Santa's Little Helper. Throughout the season, familiar faces are introduced, as we catch first glimpses of Smithers, Mr. Burns, the Flanderses, and Patty and Selma. Highlights of the season include "The Crepes of Wrath," in which Bart is sent to France as an exchange student ("Don't mess up France the way you messed up your room"); "Bart the Genius," in which Bart ends up in a school for the gifted; and "Krusty Gets Busted," in which Bart's lifelong animosity with Sideshow Bob begins. --Jenny Brown ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Pretty good for a debut season
Cartoonist Matt Groening who did the Life is Hell comics decided to make a show which started as 1 minute shorts on the Tracey Ullman Show. There Fox expanded the shorts into actual episodes making the Simpsons a spin-off of sorts. And here we have Season 1's first 13 episodes that while not greatly animated(it was their first season after all) it still started a great show and even a phenomenon.

The season starts with the holiday episode Simpsons Roasting on an Open Fire, which finds Homer without a christmas bonus and Marge having to spend all their money on removing Bart's tattoo which he thought would be cool. In the end, they adopt Santa's Little Helper, a racehound dog.

In Homer's Odyssey, Homer gets fired and he ends up becoming a big safety guy and gets re-hired at the plant as a safety technician. In the Call of the Simpsons, Homer buys a cheap RV and the family get stranded in the woods with Homer being an unlikely Bigfoot sighting.

Life on the Fast Lane as Marge getting a bit too close to her bowling instructor, who utters the famous(maybe) line about brunch("you don't completely get what you get at breakfast but you get a good meal!"). The Crepes of Wrath has Bart becoming part of a foreign exchange student to France while an Albanian spy is sent to live with the Simpsons.

Krusty Gets Busted is exactly that and Bart and Lisa try to find ways to clear his name. Probably the first real introduction of the ever-popular Sideshow Bob. The finale Some Enchanted Evening as Homer and Marge getting a babysitter only it's a notorious Babysitter Bandit. This was actually the first to be made but had to be re-sent to Korea(where they finish up the animation) so it became the finale.

It's funny looking at this set as it's probably one of the only seasons of the show that you can rightly say it's the first season. Half the time with reruns I can't tell what season it is but still it's a very good start to what would become a 16 season series.

5-0 out of 5 stars Timeless And Essential; The Best 'Cartoon' Series Ever
The Simpsons needs absolutely no introduction, and after 16 years on the air, it's pretty hard to talk about it in a review without heaping on the superlatives. Everybody in the world knows what The Simpsons is, and just how it has defined popular culture since its debut. Most critics agree that this is, by a large margin, the greatest TV series ever created. I'm not sure if I quite agree with this, but over time this may be the case. You have to understand that, even though I have been familiar with the show for as long as I can remember, it is only recently that I have taken a serious interest in it, which has culminated in the purhcase of The Complete First Season of The Simpsons on DVD.

The Simpsons is great for a number of reasons. One of these is that it works on so many levels. The dumbest person in your family can appreciate it for its humour in the literal sense, but also the most intelligent person in your family can appreciate it for the use of irony, satire and various other comedic devices that make it such an intelligent programme. Creator Matt Groening said that with the first season on The Simpsons, he had no idea what he was doing. This may have been the case, but he was definitely doing something right. This season contains only 13 episodes which the FOXnetwork commissioned with a budget of $10 million. This was a risk at the time back in late 1989, but it has since paid off; the profit FOX has made from this phenomenon is now estimated at inexcess of a cool $1 billion.

The first episode of Season 1 is "Simpsons Roasting On An Open Fire," which is a brilliant introduction to the family at Christmas. Homer failure as a department store Santa Claus, Bart's costly tatoo removal and a bad day at the dog track leave the family disheartened. Things look up when Homer brings home Santa's Little Helper and the family realise the true meaning of Christmas. "Bart The Genius" sees Bart switching I.Q. exams with Marten Prince, which results in a placement at a school for geniuses. His conscience soon gets the better of him, though, and Bart confesses all. "Homer's Odyssey" is a great episode where Citizen Homer is fired from his job and is caught in a web of nuclear hazards and public safety campaigns. "There's No Disgrace Like Home" is a true classic which sees Homer attempt to fix the major problems within his family after the realisation that his family is the worst in town. A visit to Dr. Marvin Monroe's facility is the hilarious high point.

"Bart The General" is an amazing episode which sees Bart form his own army to get back at Nelson, who beats him up after school for attempting to protect Lisa! In "Moaning Lisa," we see Lisa slip into her childhood depression! How can she be happy with so much suffering in the world? She finds comfort in her saxaphone, and a chance encounter with bluesy be-bop 'Bleeding Gums' Murphy. In "Call Of The Simpsons," the family take a trip into the woodland after Homer buys an RV in an attempt to compete with his annoying neighbour Ned Flanders. Of course, he crashes the RV over the edge of the cliff, which forces the family to survive in nature, amongst eagles, grizzly bears and Bigfoot! "The Telltale Head" sees Bart desperate to fit in with a bunch of rebellious teenagers that he is prepared to go to any lengths. This results in him cutting off the head of the local town's statue, Jebediah Springfield! "Life On The Fast Lane" is a great episode that sees Marge annoyed at Homer's lack of compassion towards her on her birthday. She turns to bowling in an attempt to try and make some use of the stupid bowling ball that Homer bought for her (or himself). She meets a man who tears her marriage apart - temporarily - before she is reunited with Homer.

"Homer's Night Out" is a classic in which Homer is caught on camera with an exotic dancer doing a bellydancer. Marge is unfuriated and forces Homer to teach Bart a lesson about women and their role as strong individuals in contemporary society. "The Crepes Of Wrath" sees Bart's bad behaviour reach fever pitch. In an attempt to control this, Principal Skinner sends Bart to France in exchange for an Albanian student. Bart leanrs how much his family means to him after his Hellish time. "Krusty Gets Busted" is a brilliant episode which sees the funny clown framed for robbery. The final episode of the season is the hilarious "Some Enchanted Evening," which sees Homer desperate to impress Marge after she is dissatisfied by his treatment of her. They go for a romantic meal and hire a babysitter for the children. Little do they know that their children are in the deadly hands of the notorious Babysitter Bandit!

This season sees the introduction of many well-loved characters, such as Marge's sisters, Patty and Selma, Ned Flanders and his diddly family, Montgomery Burns and his extremely heterosexual(!) sidekick Smithers, the legends that are Itchy and Scratchy, Grandpa Simpson, Reverend Lovejoy and his wife Helen, Krusty The Clown, Sideshow Bob and many others! This season also spawned many popular catchphrases such as "Ay carumba!" and the classic "D'oh!"

The hilarity of The Simpsons lies in its genius to turn traditional, Middle American values and flip them on their head. It shows America as the country it really is, without any sense of guilt or remorse, and because of this we love it. It is a bold, original, honest show that is totally one of a kind. Nothing like this will ever exist again, and the syndication of the show will literally run for decades and decades. We see ourselves in these characters because we are familiar with their ways of thinking. The Simpsons is so embedded in our public consciousness that I don't even have to go into as much detail about the characters of the show, it's premise or its creation as I would with any other show. All you need to know is that this DVD is essential, but be warned, once you buy this you've got at least another 17 to buy!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great start...
This is one of my favorite shows i've ever seen.It started with some great episodes like "Bart the General" and
"Bart the Geniuse" which will have you laughing till it hurts.Do your self a favor and pick up the series if you haven't already. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Painfully Beautiful
"The Joke" is a marvel. It is moving, lovely, engaging, bittersweet, and at times even laugh out loud funny. It is irresistably readable. Unlike some of Kundera's other works, which can get horrifically and unsatisfyingly complex, "The Joke" is first and foremost meant to be *read.*

One does not have to have a particular political interest to enjoy this book, either. It is a story about love and humanity and the eternal question of how to live.Ludvik's life is changed because of his apparent opposition to Communism, but it is not at heart a political work at all.

If you love to get lost in a good book, especially one that really makes you think and feel, pick up "The Joke."You won't be disappointed.

    5-0 out of 5 stars I loved it . . . no joke
The first thing you notice about this brilliant novel is the narration. It switches narrators repeatedly (a technique that Kundera cannot use today because he puts himself into his novels as the first person writer/narrator, much the same way that McCrae does in his "Bark of the Dogwood"). The idea is that events in real life do not come to us fully formed - we hear one point of view, and another, and another, and it is up to us to unravel the various stories to find out what "really" happened. As everyone knows, one person's point of view will never be the same as another's. The Joke's genius lies in its unabashedly saying exactly that.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fascinating characters.
I see that lots of readers have commented on Kundera's ego.
Who cares? I enjoyed the story and that's what counts isn't it? One thing that I can say about Kundera's books is that if I were to see one of his characters on the street, I'd be able to identify him. The people in his books are very complex. Like us. He creates human characters with contradictions, strengths and weaknesses. I love to read about what motivates them and why.
What causes me to really enjoy his novels is Kundera's insight. I think that many readers will find some of their own characteristics in his writings. The Joke is no different. If you're a Kundera fan, I think you'll enjoy yourself. And if you've never read Kundera before, this is a good novel to start with! ... Read more

    Editorial Review

Showered with Oscars, this wonderfully bitchy (and witty) comedy written and directed by Joseph L. Mankiewicz concerns an aging theater star (Bette Davis) whose life is being supplanted by a wolf-in-sheep's-clothing ingenue (Anne Baxter) whom she helped. This is a film for a viewer to take in like a box of chocolates, packed with scene-for-scene delights that make the entire story even better than it really is. The film also gives deviously talented actors such as George Sanders and Thelma Ritter a chance to speak dazzling lines; Davis bites into her role and never lets go. A classic from Mankiewicz, a legendary screenwriter and the brilliant director of A Letter to Three Wives, The Barefoot Contessa, and Sleuth. --Tom Keogh ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars BETTE WAS ROBBED OF THAT OSCAR I TELL YOU WHAT!!!
This movie showed that Bette Davis was still a force to be reckonned with! She was Margo Channing and she so deserved the Academy Award far more than Judy Holiday for Born Yesterday!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars WItty, Bitchy Classic
All About Eve is a GREAT film. The dialogue leaps off of the screen zinger after zinger and never lets up.

Davis is brilliant here - one of the best female perfomances ever.Margo Channing is a force to be reckoned with!Baxter is appropriately cunning as the ingenue, Sander is delciously snarky and Thelma Ritter continues to display her status as a national movie treasure.

A fun, witty, wicked and bumpy ride. They do not make them better than this.

5-0 out of 5 stars Definitely a great 20th Century Fox film!
There's even a reference to Zanuck (Daryl not Richard obviously) by Merrill as the latter talks of going to Hollywood. Ultra-screenlegend Marilyn Monroe is in this film too of course and the film is prophetic by talking about how far her character will go in the biz! I was expecting some fighting (even a catfight) and none surprisingly ever shows. The film is not predictable at all. A winner! ... Read more

    Editorial Review

With the knockout one-two punch of 1992's Reservoir Dogs and 1994's Pulp Fiction writer-director Quentin Tarantino stunned the filmmaking world, exploding into prominence as a cinematic heavyweight contender. But Pulp Fiction was more than just the follow-up to an impressive first feature, or the winner of the Palme d'Or at Cannes Film Festival, or a script stuffed with the sort of juicy bubblegum dialogue actors just love to chew, or the vehicle that reestablished John Travolta on the A-list, or the relatively low-budget ($8 million) independent showcase for an ultrahip mixture of established marquee names and rising stars from the indie scene (among them Samuel L. Jackson, Uma Thurman, Bruce Willis, Ving Rhames, Harvey Keitel, Christopher Walken, Tim Roth, Amanda Plummer, Julia Sweeney, Kathy Griffin, and Phil Lamar). It was more, even, than an unprecedented $100-million-plus hit for indie distributor Miramax. Pulp Fiction was a sensation. No, it was not the Second Coming (I actually think Reservoir Dogs is a more substantial film; and P.T. Anderson outdid Tarantino in 1997 by making his directorial debut with two even more mature and accomplished pictures, Hard Eight and Boogie Nights). But Pulp Fiction packs so much energy and invention into telling its nonchronologically interwoven short stories (all about temptation, corruption, and redemption amongst modern criminals, large and small) it leaves viewers both exhilarated and exhausted--hearts racing and knuckles white from the ride. (Oh, and the infectious, surf-guitar-based soundtrack is tastier than a Royale with Cheese.) --Jim Emerson ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Why do you whine?
Aside from the many great reviews there are a few ones that claim that Tarantino's plot is stolen from foreign films. I say : Who cares? I mean, are we going to critizise William Shakespeare, who copied all his plots from elsewhere? No, we recognize him for making the stories his own, like Tarantino does so wonderfully.

Pulp Ficton is a great movie that tells the tale of two hitmen, a boxer, and a mob bosses wife and the things that happen to them over the course of a day. The movie has no real life lessons and if you have no real problem with violence or bad language is a lot of fun to watch.

5-0 out of 5 stars Bruce, how hot is he?!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I saw Pulp FIction only because my man bruce willis was in it.i love him so much.but my home girl [...] loves him a lot more.hey, [...](Lol) i hear ya grilfrirend!

5-0 out of 5 stars Royale With Cheese.
Pulp Fiction is a story about redemption and is a masterpiece in filmmaking. Quentin Tarantino's direction in the movie is really powerful and breathtaking. The actors Samuel L. Jackson, Bruce Willis, John Travolta, and Uma Thurman did a great job in the movie by delivering very powerful and realistic performances. The part that really stood out was Samuel Jackson's role. Samuel L. Jackson gives an academy award winning performance that really deserved acknowledgement. I have seen the other supporting actors that were nominated in the same year this movie came out from such films like "Forrest Gump" and "Ed Wood", but I feel that academy really denied the true winner that year. In the last scene in the movie, Samuel Jackson quotes a very powerful line that sums up the entire movie and is quite breathtaking. Overall, I can't see why anyone wouldn't like this movie. ... Bridget Jones: The Edge of Reason

    Editorial Review

Fans of Helen Fielding's Bridget Jones's Diary will recall that at the end of that sly and funny version of Pride and Prejudice, singleton heroine Bridget landed her Mr. Darcy at last--Mark Darcy, that is. Bridget Jones: The Edge of Reason picks up four weeks later, and already the honeymoon is over. In addition to discovering that the man of her dreams votes conservative, left-leaning Bridget is also feeling just a mite uncomfortable with the realities of sharing bed and board with another person:

    V. complicated actually having man in house as cannot freely spend requisite amount of time in bathroom or turn into gas chamber as conscious of other person late for work, desperate for pee etc.; also disturbed by Mark folding up underpants at night, rendering it strangely embarrassing now simply to keep all own clothes in pile on floor.
But all of these problems pale to insignificance with the arrival on the scene of Rebecca, a beautiful, man-hunting arch-nemesis with "thighs like a baby giraffe" and absolutely no girlfriend code of ethics when it comes to poaching another woman's man. Before long, Rebecca's manipulations, Bridget's own insecurities, and a string of misunderstandings (starting with a naked Filipino boy in Mark Darcy's bed and ending with a suggestive valentine from Bridget's dry cleaner) result in "128 lbs. (good), alcohol units 0 (excellent), cigarettes 5 (a pleasant, healthy number), no. times driven past Mark Darcy's house 2 (v.g.), no. of times looked up Mark Darcy's name in phone book to prove still exists 18 (v.g.), 1471 calls 12 (better), no. of phone calls from Mark 0 (tragic).

Fortunately, Bridget has plenty of other problems to distract her. Her mother has returned from a trip to Kenya with a young Masai in tow--to her father's consternation; her best friends Jude, Shazzer, and Tom are all trapped in dating hell themselves; her apartment is in shambles thanks to a dotty carpenter; an unreliable ex-boyfriend has just reentered her life; and now someone is sending Bridget death threats--could it be Mark Darcy? If Bridget Jones's Diary was a modern riff on Pride and Prejudice, its sequel borrows several themes and devices (not to mention a section heading) from another Austen novel, Persuasion. And as in Austen's fiction, here the journey is the destination.A happy ending for Bridget and her pals is a foregone conclusion; how they get there, however, will have you on the edge of your chair--if you haven't already fallen off of it laughing. --Alix Wilber ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Great book ... Much better than the movie
I read this book way before the First Bridget Jones came out on dvd. This is a great book, and they should have been smart and made the movie about this. I wish she had more than the three books!!

3-0 out of 5 stars Edge of my reason
Well, the first book was a laught, but Bridget really does get a bit too dump for me.At her age I really expected her to have a bit more reason, and common sense. Her lack of straight forward thinking drove me up the wall in different parts of the book, and her friends became more of a nausance than a support system for her, driving her in all the wrong directions. I really had very high expectations for this book, and I have to say that allthought I enjoyed parts of it, all and all it was a drag to read.

4-0 out of 5 stars Hurrah!
By the time I had finished Bridget Jones's Diary, I decided that I rather liked Bridget Jones, despite her endless shallow, self-centered, annoying whining about how horrible her life was.

So when I read this book, I was fully involved in her life, once again rooting for everything to come out OK, or at least not too badly.

This book is in a somewhat similar style to the first -- that is, like a diary -- however it is far more narrative.Because there is a lot more to narrate, quite honestly!

Bridget finds herself right in the middle of a classic farce, complete with misunderstandings, miscommunications, missing letters, missed planes, and plenty of misadventures. It was all great fun, while also being very soap-opera-like, in that you couldn't wait to start the next chapter because the last one ended with a cliffhanger.

I almost couldn't put the book down until I'd found out what happens to our poor heroine.Does she finally find the man of her dreams, or at least inner poise? How about spiritual epiphany?Well, I'm not telling; you'll have to read for yourself. ... Read more

    Editorial Review

Friends has matured into television's most beloved comfort show. The peerless ensemble--Jennifer Aniston, a pre-Arquette Courtney Cox, Emmy winner Lisa Kudrow, Matt LeBlanc, Matthew Perry, and David Schwimmer--makes a lasting first impression in the first season. The perky "Pilot" introduces unlucky-in-love Monica, runaway bride Rachel, sad sack Ross, New Age ditz Phoebe, wise guy Chandler, and womanizer Joey. The focus of the first season is Ross's unrequited love for Rachel, but we have these moments to remember: the arrival of Marcel the monkey ("The One with the Monkey"); Monica, Rachel, and Phoebe's "cleansing ritual" ("The One with the Candy Hearts"); the escalating game of shower peek-a-boo ("The One with the Boobies"); Joey as Al Pacino's butt double ("The One with the Butt"); Ross taking lessons from Joey in how to "talk dirty" ("The One with the Stoned Guy"); former "Must-See TV" stars Helen Hunt and George Clooney ("The One with Two Parts"); and Chandler spilling the beans to Rachel about Ross's feelings for her ("The One Where Rachel Finds Out"). Though its devoted fans can recite these episodes chapter and verse, Friends maintains its sparkle through repeat viewings, a testament to the sharp writing as well as the cast's lightning-in-a-bottle chemistry and lived-in performances.

Stunt casting stumbles (Jean-Claude Van Damme, Charlie Sheen) aside, the second season was a very good year. Ross and Rachel were the engine that drove the season and produced some of the series' most monumental episodes, including "The One with Ross' New Girlfriend," "The One Where Ross Finds Out" (with R & R's first kiss), "The One with the List," "The One with the Prom Video," and "The One Where Ross and Rachel... You Know." But this was not the only significant story arc. Enter--and, in the bittersweet season finale, exit--Tom Selleck as Dr. Richard Burke, the family friend ("He's like a brother to... Dad," notes a disapproving Ross) who becomes Monica's (Courtney Cox) lover. Joey (Matt LeBlanc) finds success (albeit short-lived) as Dr. Drake Ramoray on "Days of Our Lives" and moves out ("We're not Bert and Ernie," he tells roommate Chandler). Future Emmy winner Lisa Kudrow's best season is to come, but, as Phoebe, she makes the most of some memorable subplots, including her shocked discovery of sad movie endings she had been shielded from ("The One Where Old Yeller Dies"), her dispute with Ross over evolution ("The One Where Heckles Dies"), and her channeling of an elderly woman who died on her massage table ("The One with the Lesbian Wedding").

Friends' peerless writing staff really spread the wealth in the pivotal third season. Each of this seamless ensemble's cast members was given a story arc that deepened and enriched their characters. Most devastatingly, Ross and Rachel's romance is torn asunder by Ross's jealousy (not to mention his one-night stand while the couple are, now famously, "on a break"). Phoebe is reunited with her half brother (Giovanni Ribisi) and meets a family friend (Terri Garr; inspired casting) who drops a Darth Vader-esque bombshell about Phoebe's parentage. Monica begins the season reeling from her breakup with Richard, but rebounds with millionaire Pete (Jon Favreau from Swingers). Chandler is driven to increasingly hysterical attempts to "go through the tunnel" and commit to his relationship with Janice (Maggie Wheeler). And womanizer Joey reveals his soulful side when he falls for an initially contemptuous theatrical costar. Also lending memorable support are Alison LaPlaca, as Rachel's self-absorbed new boss, and an Emmy-worthy Ben Stiller ("The One with the Screamer") as Rachel's new boyfriend whose volcanic temper only erupts in front of Ross. Among the A-list cameos, Robin Williams and Billy Crystal ("The One with the Ultimate Fighting Champion") are woeful, but more memorable is Isabella Rossellini ("The One with Frank Jr."), whom the hapless Ross meets just after crossing her off his "freebie list" of celebrities Rachel would allow him to sleep with. Other classic episodes include the season-opener, "The One with the Princess Leia Fantasy" and "The One with the Flashback," which offers some provocative near-couplings between Monica and Joey, Ross and Phoebe, and Chandler and Rachel. Add a chick and a duck ("The One with a Chick, and a Duck"), and you have a benchmark season in this irreplaceable series.

Friends' fourth season, one of the very best and most consistently satisfying, begins with Chandler urinating on Monica's leg to relieve a jellyfish sting. It ends with the two in bed and in lust. In between are several benchmark episodes and rich, character-enriching plot developments that keep this series from coasting on comfort level. Phoebe agrees to become a surrogate mother for her long-lost brother. Chandler "crosses the line" after falling in love with Joey's girlfriend, and is forced to spend one memorable Thanksgiving in a box. Rachel desperately pursues the recently divorced Joshua (then real-life squeeze Tate Donovan). Joey and Chandler trade spaces with Monica and Rachel, and then, with provocative (albeit offscreen) sapphic compensation, return to their humble abode. And Ross meets the warm and wonderful Emily (Helen Baxendale), setting the stage for a London wedding and classic season finale that revitalizes our rooting interest in the whole Ross and Rachel thing. Especially jolly good in this two-parter are the scene-stealing British character actors, including Hugh Laurie as the unfortunate airline passenger seated next to Rachel as she wings toward London to tell Ross she loves him ("And by the way, it seems to be perfectly clear that you were on a break," he tries to reason with her), and Tom Conti and an absolutely fabulous Jennifer Saunders as Emily's squabbling parents. --Donald Liebenson ... My family are avid board game players, and we absolutely love this game.We are a family of smart asses and it feeds right into our sense of humor. You answer the loaded questions (e.g. What is your best body part? What do you wish you never had to hear about again? What rich person do you think doesn't deserve it?) and try to guess who gave which answer. We work inside jokes into the questions and often answer sarcastically or try to throw each other off with answers we think others would give.Sometimes the person reading the answers cannot even get through them for laughing so hilariously. It depends on the group but I've nearly wet myself everytime I've played this.

Its funny that reviews are by nature open to mistakes. The review that the Aussie left certainly shows the way this works.Microsoft sold the M54-00001 bluetooth desktop set for quite a while, and there was quite a stir about problems, such as you read here. All those were called back from the stores and replaced with the updated (and now current) M54-00013 version which is soooo much better! The new one has been out only a few months, and the Aussie had his for 1.5 years! The bluetooth adapter is better, the timing is better, etc.The M54-00001's and other of their early kin are still available on pricewatch. They are much cheaper.STAY AWAY FRIM THAT MODEL!!!Instead, go for the updated M54-00013 instead. You'll be glad you did, because it has the feel of a professional keyboard with lots of bells and whistles. For more info, check Microsoft's web page (and read the fine print). Its too bad the name didn't change. My bet is that they were afraid of returns and exchanges.

Some things I had problems with: by default, the keyboard has it's function key toggeled. This causes all the F1->F12 keys to do wierd things.Toggling the function key fixed this. The layout of the keyboard is SLIGHTLY different than normal keyboards.Because I spent abunch of time at the keyboard (programmer) and don't look at the keyboard as I type, it causea quite a few mistypes the fist 1/2 hour as I got used to it.

Also, the keyboard has a very noticable delay when coming out of idle mode. The mouse has a very very slight delay under normal use.I'm not sure how this would translate to gaming, but many have had no problems w/ it.

    The ugly:
Regarding the problems some people have, some are expected and some need a little more work from the consumer.

The keyboard and mouse are bluetooth. They REQUIRE a driver to be installed for the bluetooth receiver because no bioses I know of support bluetooth yet. That is why you can not install them w/o another keyboard and mouse. It is unfortunate, yet expected.

Regarding the person whose mouse dissappeared.I had it lose a connection and after 5 mins of following the directions, I easily got them to communicate again.

Regarding the problem w/ the spacebar.I had the same problem on my 2nd set, I called microsoft support and they shipped me out a free replacement that day (all I had to do is fax a copy of the bottom of the keyboard and mouse). They were very helpfull.

I would strongly recommend this keyboard for a HTPC or where range, interferance, and line of site (to the receiver) are issues.

1-0 out of 5 stars FIVE GREAT REASONS YOUNEED 2 THINK 2 X BEFORE BUYING THIS!
I had this keyboard and mouse for one and a half year. During the first week , I already encountered various problems,

    First reason:
    1. the bluetooth mouse stopped working after 5-12 days from the time you installed. (Not because of the batteries as I hardly used the keyboard and mouse). The bluetooth microsoft keyboard is more reliable but I had some cases too where I had to
reinstall the software driver because the keyboard stopped working, maybe 4 times in the past one and a half year.

To solve these you can not just deinstall and reinstall the software but you actually had to wipe out the entire operating system and installed these software drivers again. I probably have installed 20 times during my one and a half year. And when you first installed these devices, you had to leave your wired keboard and mouse until the installation was completed.

    Second reason:
Both mouse and keyboard could not be detected during the boot start up so if you decided to install the second operating system such as: microsoft windows server 2000 or 2003, you needed your wired keyboard and mouse handy, otherwise, when the computer brought up the menu to say "press return" to boot using the disk in the DVD or CD drive, you would never be able to do this using the wireless microsoft mouse and keyboard.

    Third Reason: FALSE CLAIM !

As usual, Microsoft claimed that that this product is bluetooth specification and endorsed this product as Bluetooth certified. The reality is "Microsoft Propoganda". They did not support any other bluetooth products. So do not expect your other bluetooth devices will connect perfectly with the Microsot bluetooth dongle that came with the devices. For instance: your PDA or notebook bluetooth could not transfer to this desktop connected by the microsoft bluetooth dongle.

Fourth reason: IT did not last very long.
For one and a half year, I probably used these devices for full 5 months in total. Now the microsoft keyboard stopped working. I did not drop these devices at all.

Lastly, You will never got any reply from microsoft when you
asked for money back or questions such as: why this device did not work. I left two bloody messages to microsoft australia ( product manager) and he never returned my call.

I just hoped that I could sell microsoft bluetooth mouse to ebay for at least $25 but I doubt it...

LOOK I AM NOT BIAS, and you can feel free send me an email for more information but do not debate with me because this is my personal experience.

    WHAT IS YOUR NEXT MOVE?
Avoid buying THIS CRAPPY PRODUCT. Just waste your money.

A week ago, I bought diNovo Media Desktop mouse and keyboard. I loved it every single minute... Eventhough I had not used them very long, there are four reasons why I love them..

First, the logitech diNovo products are truly 100% bluetooth compatible with other bluetooth products.
At least I can transfer from my Desktop connected with the logitech dongle that comes with the product to my IBM thinkpad R50 that comes with a built-in bluetooth interface.

Why? because the logitech provides with similar software and fucntionalities as the one that comes with my IBM thinkpad. I can imagine that my desktop can use the logitech dongle to listen to my bluetooth headset. But I can not verify at this point as I have not got any time to use it.

Secondly, this product comes with the battery recharger for the mouse and so you do not need to buy extra battery. This is helpful becuase in my experience, you end up replacing battery more in the mouse rather than the keyboard.

The style and the design is fantastic and more user friendly.

Thirdly, You do not need your wired mouse and keyboard to install these devices as the device was immediately detected once you connected the device with the USB and before you install the software. Then there were few seconds elapsed after you install the software that both mouse and keyboard did not work. This was due to the fact that your desktop is trying to detect the devices one more time using the right drivers that come from the software. The installation is very smooth

Finally, the diNovo Media Desktop mouse and keyboard are detected during the bootup processes and make it easy for
you to install the second operating system without needing the
    wired keyboard and mouse.

I wished to give this product 1/2 star ... Read more

    Editorial Review

Rock enchantress Stevie Nicks strips off the shawls, scarves, and most of the rest of her trademark witchy esoterica for her first album since 1994's rather precious Street Angel. Seemingly more comfortable in her skin, Nicks also settles more comfortably into her croaky, lived-in voice, and is a stronger presence for it. While Trouble in Shangri-La was produced in part by Sheryl Crow, Nicks also tapped the talents of John Shanks (Melissa Etheridge) and Sarah McLachlan producer Pierre Marchand (McLachlan adds her haunting pipes to "Love Is"). Also on hand are Dixie Chick Natalie Maines (on the rockabilly-like "Too Far from Texas"), and the ubiquitous Macy Gray growls on "Bombay Sapphire," a blistering, hard-charging track that recalls the best moments of Fleetwood Mac. Other standouts on the album are the unflinching, autobiographical "Fall from Grace," recorded at punk rock speed, and the winsome "Everyday," with its elegant, soulful lyrics. --Jaan Uhelszki ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Stevie's best album yet!
Trouble in Shangri-La is Stevie Nicks' best album yet! This is probably one of Stevie's must long awaited albums because it is her newest album since 1994's Street Angel. All of the songs on this album are brand new, and some of them are ones that were written in the late 70's, but never released. If you are a Stevie Nicks fan, this is definately an album worth buying, hands down!

5-0 out of 5 stars Stevie Nicks' Best Since THE WILD HEART
TROUBLE IN SHANGRI-LA is the best Stevie Nicks solo album since THE WILD HEART. In between, she quit drugs (cocaine and prescription tranquilizers) and smoking, lost a tremendous amount of weight, and did a lot of thinking about what she wanted out of life. The result is one of her best albums ever, with or without Fleetwood Mac. The guest stars who appear do so without overshadowing Nicks, unlike on Santana's SUPERNATURAL, and, in fact, they actually add to the feel of the album, which has kind of an Outlaws-y vibe to it, but with 21st century touches. This should be one of the first Stevie Nicks solo albums you buy, along with BELLA DONNA and THE WILD HEART.

3-0 out of 5 stars Great Production, Weak Songs
The production on this album is great, the songs, however, are not. The second side of this album is almost complete filler.

Still this album does have it's moments. If you are a fan ofStevie Nicks, you may like this. Then again, you may not. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A couple days in...
We really don't need any more reviews for these wonderful phones (but what the heck!). I feel pretty strongly about these just a few days in. I use them mostly with my laptop (generic sound card) and with my Creative Zen Touch. I am also looking forward to plugging them into my Creative Audigy card on my desktop, just have not had the opportunity. The reviews are correct. Unbelievable sound reproduction: bass, treble, mid it's all there. I find that the diverse music I listen to sounds good and with the creative buds, for example, I always found myself futzing with EQ settings to get the best sound (a HUGE benefit, IMHO). Good bye earbuds hello comfy headphones!!!! BTW, I found the folding easy to accomplish. Perfect! Enjoy...

5-0 out of 5 stars pretty much the perfect headphones
These headphones sound great and can be worn for hours without causing significant ear discomfort.I use mine at the gym and at home when I want to get some good sound from my laptop. Heck they even sound better than the sound system in my car. These things are lighweight but have held up great after hundreds of hours of abuse. I plan on stocking up on several pairs of these since good headphones are hard to find at this price.

5-0 out of 5 stars Much better!!!
I wanted as good sound as possible from mp3, and as I have been happy with my Numerous Sennheisers, I ordered PX200.BIG disappointment - they are being wrapped up for return.
I went to my local store to test various sets, and tried the PX100 just to see if it is as bad as PX200.Surprise!I've now owned a pair of PX100 for a day, and once they're worn in, I couldn't be a happier camper. And I AM a very picky listener.

while I had them all side by side, I compared PX200, PX100 and my Sennheiser HD25SP.Px100 is actually closer to HD25, lacking the screeching harsh mid-range of PX200.

You won't get better sound by spending the extra $10 to get PX200, like I thought I would.

Cons:PX100 leaks like there's no one else around - not the best headphones for long flights as it will distract your seating neighbours.

With each release, Blackalicious expand the definition of hip-hop to suitthemselves. In the capable hands of MC Gift of Gab, one of the best in the business, arhyme can be personal, like a whisper from a close friend. Or it can be a searing battlerap. On Nia, producer Chief Xcel creates rhythms that burst with life: everythingfrom snaky Middle Eastern beats to thundering bass lines. --Lizz Mendez Berry ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Man, where do I start?
Cheif and Gab have to be the best Duo in hip hop. Between Gift's discusingly clever lyrics to Cheif's soulfull and funky production I don't know who is the better half. I think everyone should have all the Blcackalicious albums in their library. If you don't, you haven't experienced hip hop at it's greatest. I saw Blackalicious albums around, but never picked it up. When I finally bought it, I was kicking myself for not buying it sooner. Now I'm on a constant hunt to find every Blackalicious track I can. I'm not sure what I can say to convince you, other than listen to the sample tracks. That's all the convincing you'll need.

4-0 out of 5 stars 4.5 Stars - Emcees Are (Truly) In "Trouble"...
NIA is Blackalicious' first full length after having released several 12 inches and two EPs (Melodica and A2G) throughout the 90s. With this album, Gift of Gab showcases his versatility as an emcee, conquering storytelling ("Cliff Hanger," "Deception"), battle tracks ("Fabolous Ones," "Trouble"), and conscious rhymes ("Shallow Days" "Making Progress"). Although Chief Xcel was not quite as developed on NIA as he would prove to be on later LPs [Blazing Arrow (2002), Ambush (2004)], most of the beats provide the perfect gritty backdrop for Gab and guests to drop science over. An essential hip-hop album.

5-0 out of 5 stars THESE GUYS ARE THE EPITOME OF HIP-HOP
Gift of Gab, and Chief Xcel, met in High School, and soon after they displayed their talents to each other, they realized that they had something good going on and that they should do something about it. In the early 90's they formed a group, and did a few shows at night. They met fellow school mate ,and DJ extraordinaire, DJ Shadow, who knew Lyrics Born and Lateef, better known as Latyrx.
They all got together and loved the music that they all posessed, and decided on a name for the 5 of the them called the Solesides Crew. They formed a label, Solesides, and formed their groups, and solo careers, and after the Solesides label was dropped, they changed their name to Quannum Records, and the rest is history.

This group takes hip-hop on a whole new level, to beyond the boundaries of it's own form, and has created one of the best sounds, and albums to date in hip-hop. NIA, the debut full-length album, from the Bay Area's only concious group Blackalicious, stands as one of the most ferocious debuts in history. They demonstrate fun, intelligence, experience, challenge, and most of all, they saw the action around them.

They hide nothing, and let you know it. With a superb guest list on the album, consisting of Lyrics Born, Lateef the Truth Speaker, DJ Shadow, Nikki Giovanni, and Erinn Anova, this album shines like christmas lights on the tree in Times Square.

"Do This My Way" featuring Lyrics Born, captivate the humor, and complex witicisms brought forward by the duo.

"A to G" is part of the "ALPHABET AEROBICS" off of the A2G ep, and is a major ear treat for the album, and in concert.

"Cliff Hanger" is a track about mystic fantasies, and is rhymed like a perfectly well flowed fable. Great speed transfer in the middle of the track by Xcel, demonstrating the potion kicking in, and the twist ofthe story.

"Smythzonian Institute of Rhyme" is a great talent booster for both Gift of Gab and Lyrics Born, and both tshow the calibur, and why Quannum reigns supreme.

If I tell you anymore about the album, I'll ruin the rest for you. Buy it or whatever, but get it, that is all I can say . So I give this album, my official Fingerguy1 "PIMP" seal of approval. ---->[]D [] []V[] []D ... Read more

Bad Religion, one of the last bands you'd expect to join the ranks ofmajor-label rockers, makes the leap from its own Epitaph Records to Atlantic forits eighth album, Stranger Than Fiction. The quintet doesn't compromiseits integrity or its aesthetics, delivering its familiar Ramones-style pop songsat crash-and-burn tempos and continuing to rail against business as usual incorporate America. (The band's social critiques have always been a cut above theaverage hardcore punk's, as befits a group led by a vocalist pursuing his PhD atCornell.) Especially effective is the opening track, "Incomplete,"which features guest guitar by Wayne Kramer of the MC5. --Jim DeRogatis ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars One of the best by BR, but not THE best
This was the very first Bad Religion album I had ever heard, just as I was starting to get into punk in 7th grade.Years later, I am a huge Bad Religion fan, and if it wasnt for this album, that would not be the case. That being said however, let me make it clear that this is not their best album. Its not even in the top 3.Dont get me wrong, it is a great cd, but in comparison to their earlier recordings on Epitaph, well, it just doesnt compare.Lyrically however, Bad Religion remain on top of their game, despite what some other reviewers on this website say.You CANNOT look at this cd, or any other Bad Religion cd for that matter solely on the basis of music, or you will be missing half of the total package. The strong beliefs and sincerity of the lyrics have influenced me far more than the music has, and I can easily say that I have forgotten about other cds that have sounded like this musically, but just dont compare from a lyrical and intellectual standpoint. If you are a avid Bad Religion fan looking for another album to wet your appetite, then I strongly suggest this record. If you are a new fan looking to purchase your first BR album, then I would have to recommend either Suffer, No Control, or Against the Grain.A great cd none the less, and the one that started my affliction with Bad Religion.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best Bad Religion cd
This has to be the best album that they have released so far, the first 7 songs on this album are some of the best songs they have ever written. The best songs are The Handshake, Infected, Individual, Leave Mine to me. There is one song i can not get into, and that is Slumber. But other than that, it is the greatest Bad Religion album ever.

4-0 out of 5 stars The more you listen the better it gets.
When I first heard this album i was extremely pissed of. it just sounded mellow and dead.It is defenetly nothing like No Control but alot of the songs are fast they just arnt very aggressive. It is good to listen to when it feels like your loosing your mind and feel concerned about the state of your mental health. the music Reminds me of Dropkick Murphys but still just BR lyrics. Songs like Hooray for me, Leave mine to me, Better of dead and Stranger than Fiction are all awsome and are some of the best BR lyrics ever. Just buy it and it will evetually grow on you if you dont like it the first time.

Named after the French word for the rustle of silk, Frou Frou's debutalbum exudes cool, stylish elegance. SingerImogene Heap's soft, whispery vocals intone dreamy lyrics of doomed romances and slow recoveries. Thesongs are penned by Heap and her partner, producer Guy Sigsworth(Björk,Madonna), who manned theboard on Heap's 1998 solo albumI Megaphone. Even themightyBrian Eno gets into theact, with a cowriting credit on the soul-bearing "Hear Me Out." In fact, all 11tracks deal with love and fractured relationships, hauntingly beautiful both intheir stark emotional content and the equally sparse arrangements that showcaseHeap's ethereal voice, which she uses as a subtle weapon, much likeJoni Mitchell circa1970's Ladies of theCanyon, with the same heart-stopping yet effortless octave leaps.--Jaan Uhelszki ...
