5-0 out of 5 stars More Vino! More Vino!
This is my 1st introduction to Raymond Vino's photography, and all I can say is "Where has he been?"This south Florida photographer can stand next to all the other well-known great photographers (Jeff Palmer, HowardRoffman, etc.)These black and white photographs of male couples withattractive athletic bodies are the main images in this book. This photosare erotic and show a tender romanticism. These photographs are a welcomerelief from the overdeveloped and overposed male models of some otherphotographers. These guys are your everyday, natural males you might haveas a neighbor, friend or co-worker.

Now that Raymond Vino has beendiscovered, I eagerly await his next collection of beautiful photographs. I highly recommend this book. ... Read more

Editorial Review

For years, Tom Bianchi thought certain of his photographic studies of male nudes were unpublishable, too frankly erotic. Then a mentor explained to him that "the better pictures were the ones which took the viewer behind closed doors." For In the Studio, Bianchi frees himself from all restraints, reveling in male bodies galore. (If artwork that contains even the suggestion of sexuality offends you, consider yourself warned.) Quite a few of the photographs play with the idea of images and representation, as Bianchi poses his models in front of life-size drawings and mirrors, and even makes the occasional appearance in the mirror himself, a camera held tightly to his eye. In Richard/Bound, Bianchi reenacts the Prometheus myth, substituting a gradually ripped jockstrap for the eating of the liver, bringing the series of photos--and the model--to a provocative climax. "Authority is inevitably impotent to suppress the beauty I see," Bianchi exults. In the Studio certainly puts paid to that assessment. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Manly Contact
"In 1991, with the release of Out of the Studio, Tom Bianchi revolutionized the way in which artists conceptualize and photograph men. The unselfconscious and affectionate contact between men that ischaracteristic of his photographs was a reality that had rarely beenreported in art." - text excerpt from Stoneweall Inn

2-0 out of 5 stars Really Disappointing
I was hoping for much better from a photographer that had done such good work in his previous books.I am notVirginia, and you would probablyhave to be excessively slow to not realize that there is sex in the studio, youdon't have to prove it.Previous books showed beauty and emotion."In the Studio" had the beauty of the physical body but lackedthe emotion. If I was intrested in this style, I would go to an adultbookstore. Not all of it is borderline pornographic. There were some thatwere worthy of him. I feel Tom Bianchi has strayed from the ideals of"Out of the Studio" for no good reason

2-0 out of 5 stars Not what I expected
I have watched Tom Bianchi's images find a broader audience as the years have gone by.And I must say that I was really disappointed with "In the Studio".I understand that Bianchi "pushes theenvelope" on images of gay men in photography, but these photos werejust poorly done, in bad taste ( a semen shot is not my idea of art), andgenerally tired.Unlike Ritts, Weber, or Mapplethorpe who give a knowingwink to a gay sensability/audience, Bianchi utilizes a style that one wouldfind in some pornographic rag off the street. While Bianchi idealizes hismen, claiming beauty=worthiness, his photos do everythingto not bebeautiful, to show his men as solely physical gay men (as opposed toemotional AND physical gay men) who seem to be there for his keyholevoyeurism.

I used to feel proud looking at his images, the blatanttenderness between two men that was apparent for all to see.Now I feellike I am flaunting pornography. ... Read more

Hardcover (15 June, 1997)
list price: $13.00

Editorial Review

Christopher Makos, once identified by Andy Warhol as "the most modern photographer in America," offers up a tasty collection of pretty boys in his fourth collection of pictures. His models are, as Bruce Hainley writes in the introduction, "really into being out of it," and it's not always clear from the expressions on his subjects' faces whether they're way into themselves or oblivious to everything around them while they hone their bodies. It's that attractive vacuity that Makos captures so effectively in his stark compositions. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Third Rate Photographer
Christopher Makos, a fading, aging doyenne, photographs fantastic bodies, but in ways that dull them, dim them. Makos, always attempting to exceed the brilliant Bruce Weber, shows that it takes more than a camera and a beautiful boy to make a stunning work of art. Makos needs to save the history of homoerotic photography by putting down his camera. As a devoted scholar of gay studies and art history, I must denounce this utterly boring, terrible, sad "art" book. On a lighter note, if you need scrap paper buy this book ... the small size is excellent for taking notes.

4-0 out of 5 stars MAKO'S MANY MEN!
Mako's presents us with his latest collection of handsome young men in this Stonewall Inn Pocket size edition book. There are 48 photos of young, attractive men covering a wide range of head shots, formal compositions, and in your face nudes.Mako's has a keen eye and talent for bringing thestark reality of the male nude in natural poses to his audience. It makesyou wonder what these guys are really like or would that destroy thefantasy.Just look at the facial expressions.

Stonewall put out aseries of these small pocket size books by many photographers.A greatidea, and "Makos" is one of the best in the series and I highly recommendit.

5-0 out of 5 stars NOTES FOR THE COLLECTOR OF MALE EROTICA
Beautiful photobook by Reed Massengill. Black and white photos lovingly created by a great artist. Massengill writes in his notes for the book that he is not a "professional" photographer, and that may be why thisphotobook is so refreshingly original and magnificent. Massengillconcentrates on displaying the beauty of the male form, every line andcurve, with attention to detail and devoted respect for his models. This isa small book, can easily fit in your back pocket, but a "musthave" for the collector simply because these photos are so good.Highly recommended for the collector.

5-0 out of 5 stars Massengill displays a subtle, appreciative genius.
I knew Reed Massengill when he lived in Atlanta, and I saw much of this book in progress.I envied Reed--the way beauty seemed to gravitate toward him (male and female).Beyond my envy, I appreciated the way Reed was able to capture on film the gentle beauty of his subjects. These are honest, clear portraits without pretense: sexy, strong, youthful--but nonetheless unassuming and approachable.Reed's talent for photography is as natural as the men he photographs ... They are all beautiful boys out of daily reach. But they are so real, just in front of you. There even contain some hardcore pictures, but presented in a different way. So get it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Frank, Honest, and Refreshing
Gradually, with the fine art stature achieved by photography, we are begining to see the male body in unashamedly homoerotic contexts.Reed Massengill has gathered a bevy of beautiful young men, asked them to relax and enjoy the sensual pleaure of their youthful bodies, and recorded this activity with simple, casual, quiet elegance. No manipulation here for artsy looks (gimmicks, overly dramatic lighting, fetishism). These are simply beautiful men enjoying being beautiful.Books like this help us overcome the national double standard of "nudity is OK in advertising, TV, movies, but NEVER put it into art form".Humbug!

5-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic collection of beauties; beautifully photographed!
Another fantastic collection of male nudes by a master photographer. With a distinct style that embraces both a romanticism as well as an eroticism, Gerhart has gathered together another truly dazzling collection of the artfor which he is renowned!

5-0 out of 5 stars Beautiful, beautiful images!
Some of these images (all male nudes) are absolutely breathtaking, and not just because of the beautiful bodies that are being photographed. Klaus Gerhart makes optimum use of light -- highlights and shadows -- to bringout the best in his subjects. There are two kinds of photos in this book, one being a shot meant to show the form of an exquisite body, and one inwhich the model's personality peeks through. Great book! ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars High Quality photography.
This book contains B&W images of extremely high technical quality. Both the photography and the print manipulation are excellent, showing rich deep black tones and brilliant whites.

The models range from buffed young men to older more muscular types, although the latter predominate. Most of the models have a 'rough boy' look to them which many will find erotic. The settings for the photos seem to be in dilapidated or run-down buildings or factories.

This is eye-candy of the highest order

"With their refreshing sense of serendipity and their use of contrastbetween subject and background, Bill Costa's photographs are among themost visually arresting male nudes ever seen. Eschewing the standard art aesthetic of the nude, Costa establishes a sense of shared intimacy between his models and the viewer thorugh his photographs. His imagesareat once powerful and familiar, erotically charged without abandoningasense of the commonplace."

4-0 out of 5 stars A remarkable collection of extremely fine images.
This large format soft-cover book contains some truly stunning images. The plates are all B&W, a medium that conspires toallow the photographer to present his subjects without distraction.

Some of the most startling photographs show men in conjunction with some amazing natural rock formations allowing the viewer to conspire with the view that man is a hard beast, yet as the subjects are totally dominated by nature one is also forced to accept how weak and small a man is.

One striking fact about all the images is that they have a misty quality which works well and I hope is not an error in the book production. Well worth adding to your collection of male erotica.

5-0 out of 5 stars Artistic & Passionate!
The tranquility of Klaus Gerhart's work reminds us of the naivete and peacefulness of the style of photography popular until the 1930's. He photographs as if in a state of perfect selflessness, he and his cameramerging with his models in a perfect unity. ... Read more

Vance is just a genius. The form of his pictures and figures cascade with awe on every page. Mystery and beauty splash every page.

5-0 out of 5 stars Savoring the Image
I purchased this collection of photgraphs entitled "The Woods" not long after its publication because I was mesmerized by the subtle beauty and sensuality of its cover.Turning its pages lured me into aworld of evocative illusion where simple poses in simpler surroundingsgenerated a genuine magic.Shortly after I moved, I had occasion to comeacross the book again while unpacking.Once again, I looked through it andwas reminded of Mr. Vance's incredible eye and the power and beauty heconveys in this work.I look forward to sharing in his future vision.

2-0 out of 5 stars Save your money...
After seeing one of his pictures in another book I decided to see what this photgrapher was all about . My mistake. I'm not a photography expert but Mr. Vance's photos are minor league compared to the true greats of malenude photography such as Robert Mapplethorpe. The choice of developmentstyle is interesting until about the 3rd picture, where it starts to wearon you very quickly (only the rest of the book to go). His choice of posesis also very tiring, utilizing mostly full body shots of people doing whoknows what. "Here's a guy leaning against a tree. Here's a guy doing ahandstand. Here's two guys by a tree..." Lame. If all you areinterested in is "Naked!" men (note the book review above), asubscription to Playgirl would be much cheaper. If you want truly greatart, the better artists have works which aren't much more expensive. Twostars, though. There were still a few good shots... ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Some Beautiful Men
This book of photographs has a lot going for it. No one can accuse Mr. Fahrmeyer of not being creative in that there are many exquisite photographs here, beautifully lit and printed and seldom repeated. The first photo in the book is a very strong image and draws you immediately into it and invites you to look further. I particularly like the photographs on pages 16, 29, 87 and 95 for their impeccable lighting. There is a beautiful innocence in the two photographs on pages 38 and 39. The several photographs like those on pages 80 and 81 work, where the models lose most of their eroticism, becoming almost kaleidoscopes in the repetition of their limbs. The artist certainly has a sense of humor as evidenced in the model on page 120 in the classic discus-throwing pose. Here, however, he is all set to throw a plate.

What doesn't work are the pictures reminiscent of familiar images of Herb Ritts. I refer to the the photographs like the images on page 27 (a portrait of a man caked with mud or makeup) and page 45, where the model is hiding his face behind a plant of some kind. Ritts did this sort of shot years ago and much better. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Great pictures demonstrating superb technical skill.
This softcover book contains many fine photographs which demonstrate superb control of light, depth of field and also posing his models. A few are set in outdoor urban settings, and they are not as successful to my eye as the more controlled indoor photographs.

Beefcake certainly sums up the majority of the models, amny of whom appear to be well into their 20s. There are very few (well two) tender young subjects.

This is a great addition to a collection unless you don't like B&W images.

5-0 out of 5 stars Refreshing and Reassuring to See this Book Widely Available
Kristen Bjorn is probably the most successful and highly respected creator of filmed male erotica. He has traveled the globe searching and successfully finding the tanned and sculpted men of the Adonis category that fill the pages of this book.Unlike many other photographers of the male physique, Bjorn goes beyond the at times plastic surface of gratuitous suggestion and allows his models to be grouped or isolated in poses that, whilenever entering the realm of graphic interaction, do parade the men in the aroused state.

Such subject matter is not without precedent: many of our famous contemporary artists such as Odd Nerdrum, Paul Cadmus, Robert Mapplethorpe, and Duane Michaels have incidental use of the male 'at attention'.But it is Bjorn's sensitive eye for composition, lighting, and environmental locations that allows him to free his models to explore their natural state of sexuality.

Sadly, there is no accompanying essay about the artist to accompany this full color portfolio, but hopefully with time authors will have equal courage as Bjorn to discuss what Kristen Bjorn courageously presents as art.Grady Harp, March 05

4-0 out of 5 stars Stunning Latin Men!
No one knows how to find handsome, machismo, sensual men like Kristen Bjorn does.He is a photographer in a league by himself.Over the years he has continually brought us beautiful, desirable men from around the world. This collection of all color nude images are of some of his best looking men.All of them have been filmed by Bjorn and appeared in his many erotic videos.Bjorn is a perfectionist whose technical brilliance makes most of these images seem three dimensional. He knows how to bring out the best in each of his models. This is a beautiful book, and at 120 pages, is larger than most photo books being published. If you're a fan of Bjorn's work, you'll appreciate this new book, or experience the excitement if you are a first time viewer of his talented work. One of the best!

5-0 out of 5 stars Youth Lost in Dreams, Vanity, and Solitude
HOLLYWOOD COWBOY is a perfect companion work to Paul Jasmin's LOST ANGELES.Jasmin is a sensitive observer whose camera seems to gravitate toward romantically inclined casual portraits of beautiful people in enchanted environs. Here is a full mixture of males and females, nude and clothed, all seeming to have that intransigence of the private or public desire to 'become' in Hollywood. There are actors and actresses, models, hustlers, loners, and crowd leaners captured by Jasmin's dramatic focus in moments of ultimate vulnerability.

Though not all of the subjects for these photographs are what we would consider 'beautiful', there is an innocence that is beguiling.Whether captured inside decorous or smarmy rooms or out on the streets and parks, these people find their way into our own dream factories, whether or not those dreams ever were realized or not.A beautiful collection with excellent color and black and white reproduction.Grady Harp, March 05

5-0 out of 5 stars Lost Angeles
If you like this book , his new book (Lost Angeles) is going to blow your mind. Trust me.

5-0 out of 5 stars Dreamy & Very Moody!
This is a beautiful book!I was so anxious to see Paul Jasmin's long-awaited first book, having recently heard so much about this remarkable photographer.Over the years, I have researched many photographers, but wasn't familiar with Paul's work at all.Well, I now have another favorite photographer. These are stunningly seductive, moody, romantic, and erotic images, to name only a few feelings that came to me while viewing this sampling of his work. These images are taken from the 1950's right up to 2001.A great selection that covers male and female nudes, portraits of friends, people of the entertainment & art world, fashion shoots and peaceful travel images.

Jasmin states, "I still dream in the 1950's", well, lucky for us.You get a feeling from these photographs that you don't get from the current photographers images, and that's a feeling of innocence.A time when sex was more innocent and much more sensual.A long time friend of Bruce Weber, you can see the influence in a few of these photos.Paul Jasmin have appeared in many leading fashion magazines such as Arena, Vogue, W, and L'uomo Vogue. There are three informative and touching essays by Sofia Coppola, Grazia D'Annunzio, and critic Nicolai Ouroussoff. They help to highlight & explain Jasmin's life and career.Arena Editions has again published another striking book on quality paper, that is handsomely designed.

This is a rare opportunity to enjoy a photographer who exposes us to a time that is now lost, a time of innocence and youthful carefree ways.I really enjoyed this collection of his images.Highly Recommended! ... Read more

OK, so I know this is tacky, and an Amazon.com monitor will probably take this post down, but I just left MEN (and FRESHMEN), where I served as Editor, and I wanted to say thanks to everyone who bought the magazine during my tenure. Reading these online reviews really warmed my heart, and made it all worthwhile. I had a blast putting the magazine(s) together each month--hey, I got paid to look at hot, naked guys all day, who could ask for more?

5-0 out of 5 stars Its raining men
I started looking at these mags back when I was in High School. Other reviews seem to compair this to Playgirl.Well I Have vies both for quite a while and think that there are big differences between the two.The photos in Men, seem to have more of a natural look to them. Playgirl does not seem to focus on the art of the male body. They seem to portry them as being way to cold and unfriendly. I would rather buy men magazines then Playgirl any day. Also, people like what they like. I feel that we also have way to many women magazines that are avail. of this nature. The male nude is very much a wonderful sight to see, that people seem very much ashamed of.

As a straight female I offer a unique perspective on this magazine.I think it's totally hot.I really like the fiction, and the guys are such cute young hotties! Some of them look a little "mean" for my taste - they look so challengingly at you, instead of invitingly, but then again, a lot of guys in porn look this way to me - this is normal for porn I guess.Very few, if any of them are over-beefed (too muscular), and some of them aren't muscular at all, which means nice variety. The fiction is my favorite of all the gay mags I've looked at - lots of first times, nothing really bizarre or violent.Overall a cool magazine.

5-0 out of 5 stars A must buy
I've been a subscriber of this magazine since it first issue back in September 1997, those days the magazine has just changed its name from Advocate Classified and tried to give a style look to the world of all-male erotica, with movies reviews, notices about the adult entertainment, a biweekly serial and great layouts, with time stared giving us more information and articules about everyday life.
In September 2000 the magazine became mothly instead of every two weeks and staring giving more information to combine the style of the gay man and theerotica industry.
To this day this magazine is still of one the best in its field, fantastic reviews, great pictures, personal acounts and insight articules about today hottest places makes it a must-read.

4-0 out of 5 stars Not the "Weekly Reader" of school days!
A subscription to "Unzipped" isn't wasted. Not only does the magazine, the definitive publication of gay news, offer lavish and sexually stimulating photo layouts (solo and couples), it is Playboy-esque in providing interviews with prominent gay leaders and entertainers and mainstream articles with a bend toward whatever the subject and its relationship to life as a gay man. Further, there are features about gay websites and where to get just about anything a gay person (or a daring married traditional couple) could want, from videos to personals to the toys the big boys play with. But the magazine's cornerstone is its pictorials, usually of almost-always great-looking guys with bods that send the libido (and certain body attachments) into overdrive, and both the solo and couple layouts leave nothing to the imagination. Beyond those blistering layouts that seldom (if ever) disappoint, though, the magazine has everything else, and the one-year subscription rate for this monthly publication is well worth it. It makes for a dandy companion on cold (and sweltering hot) lonely nights!

4-0 out of 5 stars Once is not Enough!
Christopher Mako's has always had the ability to find and photograph the most beautiful men.Now in his book "Sewn Photos" he presents us with a wide array of semi-nude and nude young men who are very muscular as well asvery handsome. He introduces a new dimension to his photography by showingeach models photos in groups of four sewn shots on each page. There aretwo different poses in each group of four. Its like seeing each model inrepeat freeze frame.I think Mako's presents us with images of what reallyturns him on, and then leaves it up to us to decide if we want toparticipate and also enjoy them.

Mako'sphotos have appeared in manymagazines over the years (Interview) and currently are shown in Genre.Itsexciting that they are now collected in a book. This is a unique book foryour collection and enjoyment. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Very nice to look at..
This book is an awesome book and the men are absolutely beautiful, but I expected a little more thats why I didn't give it a full five stars, But the black and white make it very exotic...

5-0 out of 5 stars "We Are the Lucky Voyeurs"
This book is full of beautiful male models in...semi-nude &nude poses in theatrical settings and other situations.Even Bruce & Seth Hall, two blonde beautiful male twins, are presented here in sexy bikini's and mesh stockings.Quite a sight. Not only are there beautiful male models, but many celebrities & stars, such as Joe Dallesandro from Midnight Cowboy; Hollywood porn director-drag queen Chi Chi LaRue on a porno set; and the legendary Jimmy James as Marilyn Monroe, among others.

Yes there's a little bit of Hollywood represented here but so much more. What is amazing with Michael's photography is his unique imagination in posing his models in such a different way than other photographers do.His photographs are always fascinating but never boring or static. He began his career in the 70's and today is one of the entertainment industry's most renowned photographers, having photographed all the top stars.

I really loved this book and it will share a special place in my collection. It was beautifully designed by Kevin Scott Hees.A very erotic and different collection of photographs.Perhaps there will be a Volume 2?We can hope. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Fans of Brit Bear Edward Lucie-Smith's 2 bear photobooks
My not-so-insignificant Otherbear and I are both fans of anything the British critic and photographer Edward Lucie-Smith puts his name on, so we both got off on both the Lucie-Smith bearish books of photos by Chris Nelson and Jack Fritscher which are Amazon.com musts for any serious bear collector of not-at-all-insignificant Otherbears, especially with the end of Bear magazine.

5-0 out of 5 stars Two essential bear photo books that chronicle us all
Chris Nelson's "Bear Cult" makes a perfect companion with Jack Fritscher's "American Men" which afterSeptember 11 terrorist attacks is an apt title. Both books came out about the same time---in fact, Fritscher is in Nelson's "Bear Cult."Do all bears know each other? Both are very different photographers. Nelson: stills only. Fritscher: stills backed with videos. British bear critic Edward Lucie Smith wrote the intro to both books. I confess I've used them both as art and as bearotica. Plus the bear look really is an American invention. These two prime bear photography books should lead the way to more bear photo books. I recommend both these landmark books for every gentleman's library.

5-0 out of 5 stars Stunning, simple, masculine
Waaay back in the early days of Bear Magazine, Brahma studios was born... and with it wonderful photography. This book is a collection from those days. Simple, masculine, erotic. To call this 'bear porn' is a mistake. This is classic male erotic, with a wonderfully bear-ish 'slant'. (just wish it was hard back to allow it to stay open!)

Still a classic. ... Read more
