1-0 out of 5 stars Where's the beef?
The title page on Amazon website says the book is 100 pages. it's actually 64 pages, of which 10 are table of contents, index and glossary. The entry for "Watches after 1945" is 2 pages long

    I'm returning it

4-0 out of 5 stars Comprehensive. Great Value.
This book is a "must have" for the serious watch collector. We see the most significant (and many not so significant) watches from the very earliest mechanical time pieces to the wrist watches of the 20thcentury.

Though comprehensive in its coverage and detail, I was leftthirsty for color (as well as size) in the illustrations. As a generalguide for watches throughout history though, there simply is no other bookto have for the price. Period. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Great Idea, but could use improved instructions
This is not a beginners project!

I have attempted this clock 3 times now over the past 20 years. Admittedly on my first attempt I didn't have enough patience to assemble the parts correctly, so I didn't have a chance.

This third time I did take my time cutting and gluing. I managed to make most of the parts without too much trouble, but the instructions towards the end of the project are much less explicit than in the beginning. Take your time and review the schematics. Many times they are much more helpful than the written instructions.

Make sure you follow the lines EXACTLY when you cut. There are very small tolerances to the parts that you have to keep for this to work. The main problem I had was the star shaped shafts. These need to be kept uniform in shape for the gears to mesh properly.

Also, be prepared to adjust the spacing between gears by moving the axles around on the frame. Again, if your frame was not perfectly done, the holes that show axle placement will be off resulting in wobbles and such.

I have been able to make the clock tic for a few seconds, and that was satisfying enough for me. Maybe next winter I will pull it out and try to fine tune it again.

5-0 out of 5 stars A clock that run couple hours
After 3 weeks of late night work, I finally finished it yesterday. At the beginning the pendulum only swung 5 to 6 times and then stopped. After tuning the position of wheels 3 times, now my clock can keep ticking for couple hours. It is very cool!

However, it is very difficult to set time in this clock. But that's okay to me, coz I don't expect it to show correct time anyway.

    Some suggestions:
    - as all other reviewers said, all the cutting must be very precise.
    - Get yourself a pair of "normally closed" tweezers and of course a pair of regular tweezers as well.It helped me a lot when gluing pieces together.
    - I used knitting needles instead of wire for axles.I used 2.25mm (US #1) for axles for motor wheel and minute hand, and 1.5mm or 1.75mm (US #000 and #00) for other axles
    - I cut a big rectangular hole on the face, and removed the case, so that people can see the cool wheels inside
    - I have to tilt the whole clock to the right a bit, or else the pendulum will stop swinging after a few seconds
    - I added two quarters to the end of pendulum rod, which seems to help a little bit
    - Make sure you get your wife's approval on making this clock, because for sure you will be spending many nights on this project

4-0 out of 5 stars Good study model
This is an interesting design for a clock.I put mine together in about a month (working several hours a night). When I noticed a couple of design flaws. The gears are not going to mesh very well, no matter how well you put it together. Also, since you must use wire for the pivots the clock hands are going to be extremely difficult to get to move properly since you cannot securely fasten the gears to the pivots. However, it looks great when you finish it!I did not put the cover on because I like to see the gears.Since I don't use mine as a clock I painted the gears and use it as reference for when I build wooden clocks. If you want to make a working clock I strongly suggest looking into making a wooden one. There are lots of free plans available online.I recommend a website called Gary's Wooden Clocks. This website has lots of information, tips, clock plans, downloads and links for the clock building enthusiast.
In short, this is a good introduction to clock making but is not its self a good clock. ... Read more

If you are a serious collector then put your money towards another watch. This book shows no/little pricing. In many cases it is a paid advertisement of the watch companies - products and technical descriptions are not shown/listed.You can get more info from a companies website/product catalog.Very disappointing book.It is a slick high glossy collection of photos - you get neither a good coffee table book nor a technical reference.I gave it to the dog to play with - at least someone is enjoying it. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars New to Hobby - Good Book
I am new to the hobby of horology and enjoy owning this book. It provides a lot of detail and good photos of all the major brands (the competing buying guides leave out some significant brands). Well done and worth buying BEFORE you spend 30 times its price (or more!) on a watch. See the different styles and open your eyes. Take the TIME to appreciate it!

5-0 out of 5 stars The Bible of the Watch Industry, The Best tool available
This is an excellent tool if your a collector, admirer, in the biz or anyone considering a watch purchase. An incredible reference tool, great in helping one narrow down their likes and dislikes...my 3rd year in a row. There are a couple of others...however this one is the most objective and useful.

2-0 out of 5 stars Ho-hum, not much different than prior years
This year is much like last, with few new models and the same "puff piece" descriptions of the companies. They still don't give much info; for instance, the dial is never described. Watches International manages to include far more information on the pieces, though no prices and fewer brands.Nevertheless, Wristwatch Annual 2004 does give prices this year and also includes model numbers, unlike last year.

If you're a watch newbie, this is a MUST for learning about the brands and models. If you're a watchaholic like me, you will undoubtedly order this volume anyway, but don't expect much reading pleasure. The market remains wide open for someone to step up and do a comprehensive annual catalogue. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars The Bible for Hamilton Manual Collectors
Renee's labor of love is a "godsend" for those of us who's passion is the collecting of vintage American wristwatches. As my collection is centered around the classic tanks for Gruen, Bulova and Hamilton, this book was the ultimate source on the hundreds of models produced, their respective movements, their histories, original ads, and production figures, when available. He wisely stays away from "price guides" which would "date" the book, and be subjective. Its usefulness or interest would be a bit limited to non-Hamilton fanatics, but a worthwhile addition to any horological library.

4-0 out of 5 stars It's About Time

1-0 out of 5 stars isn't that just like a frenchman?
I had never realized before that all watches were made for men.Not a single watch appears in this book which was designed to be worn by women.

(Almost?) all of the watches in the book were modern.

I also agree with the other reviewer who indicated that information is scant to the point of non-existence.There is a brief introduction which is moderately interesting, but the rest of the book consists of a picture of one watch per page with precious little information about the watch; primarily the comments consist of comments on the watch's appearance, which I can see for myself.

If you want a huge amount of information about watches, try Shugart. If you want a coffee table book with old and new watches, great pictures, but not much information, just an eye feast with a sense of design development over time, Judy isn't bad.If you like watches not just from the technical aspect but also as items of jewelry, Jeanenne Bell is coming out with a book in May that should satisfy.

5-0 out of 5 stars A lovely book which I read over and over again
Some of the not so complimentary reviews which I read about this book on Amazon.com do not do the book justice.I think Pannier's book is meant to show would-be watch collectors that collecting watches can be fun.It was never meant to be a comprehensive guide to any particular brand.I think Pannier chose a good selection of collectible watches.Five of the watches which I own happen to be featured in her book.Buy it, because it is a very relaxing book to read.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent value for the price
This is a lovely book for the price.384 pages in a square format, each page shows a watch in color with a short caption.Other reviewers have commented that the there is very little technical information, very true but I think the book is aimed at buyers who want an introduction to collecting wristwatches.I got a copy because I'm interested in product design and as a publication designer I thought the book was nicely produced.

Having looked through the book I am intrigued as to why nearly all of these watches are lacking in any kind of elegance.Even the expensive well known makes use dreadful typography for the numbers, have chunky looking minute and hour hands, thick cases and generally clutter the dials with unnecessary markings. I do think there are good looking watches though, page ninety-two shows a simple, elegant Patek Phillipe from the fifties and page sixty-six has a Vacheron Costantin. I'll continue to wear my neat Rotary GS 00898/03.

Amazon has over six hundred books listed under Clocks and Watches, this inexpensive little book is a good start to your time-piece library. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Good Overview
This is a good overview of watch history and availability. Highlighted are 55 of the major collectible watch companies with good photo selections from each. The detailed pages on the companies is good and informative. Not bad for the coffee table, either.

1-0 out of 5 stars Pretty pictures- Scant value
This is an OK gift book with nice photos of watches, but it fails as a "connoisseurs" guide. There is scant history of the various brands and almost no technical information. No connoisseur would seriously consider a Timex watch, but Timex is presented along with the finest Breitlings, Bulgaris, Breguets et al.In the section on Bulgari, the author describes in detail a watch given by Count Galazzo (sic) Ciano to a friend, but there is no illustration to go along with the description.

A watch collector or connoisseur should not waste his or her time with this lightweight giftbook

5-0 out of 5 stars A Gem in Time!
I found this excellent translation from the original French to be a most authoritative and lucid treatment of the physics and metrology of time on a superior technical level, by two of the most prominent figures in the field. It gives comprehensive coverage of atomic frequency standards including the most recent advances involving cold atoms and trapped ions, such as the the cesium "fountain" and mercury ion standards. I consider this book essential reading for anyone with an ambition to become steeped in the field, and offers a more technically sophisticated treatment than is attempted, for example, in a book such as "Quantum Beat". ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Nice book, but...
I definitely have to agree with the other reviewers. This is a nice compendium of the different watchmakers, it has some good general background of the companies but it only mentions just a few - not all of them.

The photos are not that impressive, you can get better photos at some websites or watch magazines.

I recommend this book for a starting watch collector to get general information. If you want more in-depth knowledge look for other publications....

2-0 out of 5 stars A showy book on fashion accessories, not about horology
This is a beutifully produced book, and a usefull title to have laying on your coffee tabel if you want to impress your friends about your "sophictication" and discreetly introduce them to the subject that you collect expensive contemporary wristwatches.

It was obviously written with the support of the manufacturers of these geourgeous mechanisms and for much of its course quotes verbatim from their official corporate histories and utilisis the imagery of their advertising a PR departments.

It is however not the book to turn to for factual and objective -including critical- information about specific models
or makers or to learn more about the technology and history of watches.

    2-0 out of 5 stars Haven't I Just Read This ... ?
If you've read one Caroline Childers' watch book, you seem to have read them all! This book looks good, has quality paper, decent photography ... but one can't help wondering how the material gets chosen for inclusion! It is not a thorough or complete reference work, nor is it suitable for enthusiasts; however, it may well serve as a beginner's introduction or something to put your coffee on instead of marking the table! Come on Caroline, give us something new, with pictures which follow the text throughout the entire book, coupled to some in-depth research on the manufactures, the watchmakers, the designers, the engineers and the actual calibres, and less waffle about the jewellery aspects - if we want that, we'll buy your other books! And talking of 'waffle' - enlightened though some of it is - if we want it then we can always order the brochures; they're free! Ah, something has just clicked into place ... I thought I'd seen the pictures before. At least it's not one of Patek Phillipe's extortionately priced photographic albums! Check out George Daniels' books for a thorough review of watchmaking or possibly Peter Braun's for a latest review of what's on general release. And A. Lange & Söhne's literature is first-rate! ... If you know nothing about clocks and want to learn more before you seriously invest time and money, this is not a bad reference.Ignore the title (it was published in 1985!) and most probably worthless as a price guide...and unless you are from California and can't read...it only covers "American" made clocks. It's an easy reference and somewhat informative...for beginners.

4-0 out of 5 stars Rise and Fall and the Rise Again of Mechanical Watchmaking
Wristwatches' is an excellent survey of the huge variety of watches thatbeen developed this century. Highlights includes a consise history of thechanges in design over the last 100 years and brief insights into howparticular complications are constructed. However, for the english reader, for this is a translation from the original German editions, it has a fewfaults in it's germanocentricity. All of the historical advertisingmaterial displayed in the book is in German. It would have been moreappropriate to include at least a few english language advertisments as itgives a lot of flavour to such a book. In addition there is a completesection on German wristwatch development which is a bit dry if this is notyour particular interest. A major editorial fault is that the vastmajority of photos have lost their numbering and you are left trying tomatch up the descriptions to each picture. For such a book this fault is apity. However it is still one of the best guides for vintage and modernwatch enthusiasts as it covers a vast range of models with a very useful, and fairly accurate, price guide. ... Read more
