Hamilton Beach 33160 6-Quart Meal Maker Slow Cooker Average Customer Review: Kitchen -- our price: $35.99 (price subject to change: see help) US | Canada | United Kingdom | Germany | France Editorial Review Slow cookers are one of the most appreciated kitchen appliances. For a ready-made dinner after work, all the home chef needs to do is put the ingredients in the crock the night before and refrigerate, then in the morning before leaving for work, place the crock in the cooker base and turn the knob on. Succulent roasts or stews are done by dinner time. Decorated with garden-fresh vegetables, this six-quart oval-shaped model holds a 6-pound beef roast, 6-pound chicken, two 3-pound rib packs, or approximately 5 quarts of stew or soup. Wraparound heat ensures food cooks from the sides, not just the bottom. The temperature knob features two cook settings, low and high, and a keep warm setting for serving after food is thoroughly cooked. An included latch keeps the lid secured for transporting. The crock removes from the base for use in a microwave or oven, and both the crock and lid are dishwasher-safe. --Ann Bieri ... Read more Features Reviews (5)

Mystic River by Average Customer Review: Paperback (02 April, 2002) list price: $7.99 -- our price: $7.99 (price subject to change: see help) US | Canada | United Kingdom | Germany | France Editorial Review Ever since blasting onto the literary scene with the Shamus Award-winning A Drink Before the War, Dennis Lehane has been the golden boy of noir. His Patrick Kenzie and Angela Gennaro novels are marvels of tight pacing, dialogue so good it gets under your skin and stays there, with dead-on portrayals of working-class Boston neighborhoods. Sure, he's the oft-proclaimed, hard-boiled heir to Hammett and Chandler, but Lehane also takes a page from the Hemingway school of hyper-intense writing. He pares away and pares away until he's left with the absolute essentials--and then those essentials just explode off the page. In his five Kenzie-Gennaro novels, the detective duo is at the nexus of Lehane'sbig bang. Darkly funny and just this side of jaded, Angie and Patrick movethrough Dorchester's bleak streets with an assurance born of familiarity. It'simpossible to imagine these streets without the pair, or to imagine the pairaway from those streets. Mystic River, then, arrives as a bit of agamble, as Lehane moves from the sharp edges of portraiture to the broaderstrokes of landscape. No Angie, no Patrick: this neighborhood is on its own. It's not any prettier and certainly no friendlier, and its working-classfaçade still barely masks the irresistible tug of violent ways, means, and ends. Twenty-five years ago, Dave Boyle got into a car. When he came back four dayslater, he was different in a way that destroyed his friendship with Sean Devineand Jimmy Marcus. Now Sean's a cop, Jimmy's a store owner with a prison recordand mob connections, and Dave's trying hard to keep his demons safely submerged. When Jimmy's daughter Katie is found murdered, each of the men must confront apast that none is eager to acknowledge. Lehane tugs delicately on the strandsthat weave this neighborhood together, testing for their strengths andweaknesses; this novel seems as much anthropological case study as thriller. By turns violent and pensive, Mystic River is vintage Lehane. How good isit? You may go in missing Angie and Patrick, but after a few pages you won'teven realize they're gone. Lehane's noir is still black magic. --KellyFlynn ... Read more Reviews (380)

Divine Secrets of the Ya-Ya Sisterhood (Full Screen) Director: Callie Khouri Average Customer Review: DVD (05 November, 2002) list price: $14.96 -- our price: $11.98 (price subject to change: see help) US | Canada | United Kingdom | Germany | France Editorial Review Grab your tissues and send the guys away, because Divine Secrets of the Ya-Ya Sisterhood is the most pedigreed chick flick since Steel Magnolias. You can tell by the title and the novelish names of the Louisiana ladies from Rebecca Wells's precious bestseller. First there's Sidda (Sandra Bullock), a successful playwright still wrestling with her manipulative mother, Vivi (Ellen Burstyn), after a traumatic upbringing. Then there's longtime friends Teensy (Fionnula Flanagan), Necie (Shirley Knight), and Caro (scene-stealer Maggie Smith), from Vivi's secret club of "Ya-Ya Priestesses," together since childhood and determined to heal the rift between Sidda and her mom. Through an ambitious flashback structure (including Ashley Judd as the younger Vivi), screenwriter and first-time director Callie Khouri (who wrote Thelma & Louise) establishes a rich context for this mother-daughter reunion. There's plenty of humor to temper the drama, which inspires Bullock's best work in years. Definitely worth a look for the curious, but only fans of Wells's fiction will feel any twinge of loyalty. --Jeff Shannon ... Read more Features Reviews (165)

Erin Brockovich Director: Steven Soderbergh Average Customer Review: DVD (06 January, 2004) list price: $14.98 -- our price: $11.24 (price subject to change: see help) US | Canada | United Kingdom | Germany | France Editorial Review Much will be made of Julia Roberts's wardrobe in ErinBrockovich--a brash parade of daring hemlines and Wonderbra confidence. Roberts is unabashedly sexy in the title role of this fact-based comedy-drama, but she and director Steven Soderbergh are far too intelligent to rely solely on high heels and cleavage. Susannah Grant's brassy screenplay fuels this winning combination of star, director, and material, firing on all pistons with maximum efficiency. With Ed Lachman, his noted cinematographer from The Limey, Soderbergh tackles this A-list project with the fervor of an independent, combining a no-frills look with kinetic panache and the same brisk editorial style he used in the justly celebrated Out of Sight. Broke and desperate, the twice-divorced single mom Erin bosses her way into a clerical job with attorney Ed Masry (Albert Finney), who's indebted to Erinafter failing to win her traffic-injury case. Erin is soon focused on suspicious connections between a mighty power company, its abuse of toxic chromium, and the poisoned water supply of Hinkley, California, where locals have suffered a legacy of death and disease. Matching the dramatic potency of Norma Rae and Silkwood, Erin Brockovich filters cold facts through warm humanity, especially in Erin's rapport with dying victims and her relationship with George (superbly played by Aaron Eckhart), a Harley-riding neighbor who offers more devotion than Erin's ever known. Surely some of these details have been embellished for dramatic effect, but the factual basis of Erin Brockovich adds a boost ofsatisfaction, proving that greed, neglect, and corporate arrogance are no match against a passionate crusader. (Trivia note: The real Erin Brockovich appears briefly as a diner waitress.) --Jeff Shannon ... Read more Features Reviews (275)

The elegant design includes everything you need to build your own calming light fountain, including a metallic poly fountain dish, polished river rocks, a wax tiered candleholder, twelvearomatherapy vanilla-scented tea candles, and a water pump with variable flow control. The soft candlelight and soothing sounds of water are deliciously calming, while the fountainacts as a natural humidifier. The unique tea-light design ensures long-lasting use: simply change the tealights when they burn low. Our only caution is that the fountain should not be used in excessively hotrooms, since the wax tiers could melt. Outstanding Scrapbook Pages: 250 Of the Best Pages and Techniques from the World's #1 Scrapbooking Magazine by Average Customer Review: Paperback (01 October, 2003) list price: $22.99 -- our price: $16.09 (price subject to change: see help) US | Canada | United Kingdom | Germany | France Reviews (3)
According to the Introduction, the 250 page selections were difficult to choose. The staff had to review "every page of every issue" since the beginning before voting on favorites. The criteria for being included were:How influential was that page on later scrapbooking trends? Were the techniques extraordinary, the photos exceptional, or perhaps the journaling memorable? Was there something unique in the design/idea that made it stand out? Based on what I have seen here, every page in this book answers yes to at least one of those questions. I happen to have collected several of the other books published by Memory Makers, all of which showcase page examples of the techniques being discussed.I wasn't terribly surprised to recognize many of the same pages here that were used previously in their other books; makes sense to me, because after all, the most outstanding examples of techniques for their teaching books would probably be influential, memorable, and/or extraordinary in general.Still, this book was a wee bit redundant for me.On the other hand, readers who are new to scrapbooking will appreciate the quick retrospective on the craft, which helps them catch up to modern trends in one read.Longtime readers of the magazine may cherish this nice collection of favorites, especially if it means that they can finally donate a few shelf-fulls of back issues to the local library in exchange for one slim volume that chronicles the cream of the crop. Andbased on the general excellence of this gallery of scrapbooking art, I can heartily recommend it to anybody looking for page ideas. Isbn: 189212730X |

Martha Stewart Living Average Customer Review: Magazine list price: $59.20 -- our price: $28.00 (price subject to change: see help) US | Canada | United Kingdom | Germany | France Editorial Review Even if you will never make a "gourd candle" or a "Fortuny-inspired tablecloth," Martha Stewart Living can't be beat for its wealth of ideas concerning what Martha calls "good things." A crafter for craft's sake, and an obsessively organized woman (just look at her personal calendar, included in the first few pages), there is no concept or task that is too mundane for Martha. Like Martha herself, the magazine is impeccably organized--recipes and decorating instructions appear with full-color photos, each filed in their own sections of "cooking," "keeping," "crafts," "home," and "collecting." Learn to slip matched sets of bed linens into one of their pillowcases for easy and convenient shelving, make washcloth mitts, and coordinate mismatched towels with decorative ribbon. A whiz at flower arranging, dinner parties, card and sewing crafts, and decorating, Martha covers and conquers all areas of the home--plus weddings, baby showers, and holidays. --Daphne Durham ... Read more Features Reviews (64)
Of the regular monthly articles, I like "Ask Martha", which solves problems posed by readers, from health issues to how best to clean your eyeglasses, to "How can I get the coating on my chicken to stay in place when I am frying it ?". Martha Stewart has brought style and good merchandise at affordable prices for those of us who are budget conscious, but like nice things. I have bought her bedding, and her bathroom accessories have graceful shapes and are an excellent value, and this magazine is one of my favorite aspects of the "Martha industry". The Patricians I know are not usually kind to Martha, but Proles & Plebes like me tend to greatly appreciate her.

Runaway Bride Director: Garry Marshall Average Customer Review: DVD (29 December, 2004) list price: $12.99 -- our price: $11.69 (price subject to change: see help) US | Canada | United Kingdom | Germany | France Editorial Review It took nearly a decade to find a mutually agreeable screenplay, but the stars and director of Pretty Woman finally reunited to make Runaway Bride, wisely avoiding any attempt to recapture the 1990 film'selusive magic. The result is a perfectly pleasant romantic comedy that would've fared better critically (despite boffo box office) if it hadn't been overshadowed by its blockbuster predecessor. It's certainly a more credible film than Pretty Woman, trading a far-fetched fairy tale (hooker hooks up with tycoon? bah!) for a more amiably conventional plot about big-city reporter Ike Graham (Richard Gere) who falls for a small-town handywoman Maggie Carpenter (Julia Roberts) with a nasty habit of fleeing from the altar in a recurring state of premarital panic. Both characters are instantly likable, and the smooth dialogue by Josann McGibbon and Sara Parriott only occasionally panders to sitcom cuteness. And despite his routine sacrifice of subtle craft for commercial appeal, director Garry Marshall knows when to trust his stars and material, lending this movie a casual charm (aided by a terrific supporting cast) that never feels forced or artificial. The whole thing's utterly predictable, riding on the suspenseless question of whether Maggie will dump her sports-nut fiancé (Christopher Meloni) and tie the knot with Ike. It's a foregone conclusion after the usual games of romantic cat and mouse, but the chemistry between Roberts and Gere is undeniable, and with a decade's worth of additional stardom between them, they shine as brightly as ever. --Jeff Shannon ...
