    Editorial Review

Slow cookers are one of the most appreciated kitchen appliances. For a ready-made dinner after work, all the home chef needs to do is put the ingredients in the crock the night before and refrigerate, then in the morning before leaving for work, place the crock in the cooker base and turn the knob on. Succulent roasts or stews are done by dinner time. Decorated with garden-fresh vegetables, this six-quart oval-shaped model holds a 6-pound beef roast, 6-pound chicken, two 3-pound rib packs, or approximately 5 quarts of stew or soup. Wraparound heat ensures food cooks from the sides, not just the bottom. The temperature knob features two cook settings, low and high, and a ‘keep warm’ setting for serving after food is thoroughly cooked. An included latch keeps the lid secured for transporting. The crock removes from the base for use in a microwave or oven, and both the crock and lid are dishwasher-safe. --Ann Bieri ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars I've had 2 Hamilton Beach slow cookers that failed
The base of the first one that I had literally melted.Luckily I was home when it happened.I called Hamilton Beach and they replaced it with this 6 quart model. That was about 2-1/2 - 3 years ago I think. For the first 2 years it saw some use, but not a lot. This past 6 months I've used it a lot since I now work out of the home and the slow cooker died the other day.Just stopped working, wasting the chicken inside of it.After having two of these die in short time, I cannot recommend Hamilton Beach slow cookers.

If you do still consider this cooker, I would not recommend the hot setting for any length of time, and make sure you don't leave the low setting on for much more than 8 hours. It gets very hot.

3-0 out of 5 stars Cooks nicely, but cheap handles break with little use
I received this cooker three years ago as a wedding gift.As we are now a large blended family of five, I knew I'd need to be able to cook enough for everyone. This cooker fit the bill and has worked very nicely BUT I'm ready for a new one already. Both outside handles have broken within in the past 2 years.I never carry the cooker with food in it (as it would be too heavy and dangerous) but the handles are just cheap brittle plastic.Look for something with more sturdy handles, I know I will.Other than this minor flaw, it does cook wonderfully and we have made scores of dishes in it.

5-0 out of 5 stars My first crock pot!
This is the first crock pot I have ever owned, and I love it! I use it for everything from stews to warming cider on cold winter evenings. It is also handy to use for pot lucks, etc. for hot dishes that are convenient to transport. Clean up is a breeze with the removable, dishwasher safe crock inset. All in all, a great kitchen appliance. ... Read more

With its 7-cup work bowl, 600 watts of power, and slicing and shredding discs, this food processor is ideal for most households. It kneads 1-1/2 pounds of bread or pastry dough, chops 1 pound of meat, emulsifies a perfect mayonnaise or salad dressing, and chops, slices, or shreds vegetables, nuts, cheese, and bread crumbs. The plastic work bowl is shatterproof and resists both heat and cold. A single fingertip control turns the processor on and off and pulses for precise work. All parts go safely into the dishwasher. With work bowl in place, the processor measures 7 by 12-1/2 by 9-1/2 inches. It carries a five-year warranty against motor defects and a three-year warranty against other defects. --Fred Brack ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A perfect size and a great machine for a family of four
I am using it for around 2 months andI am happy with its performance. I uses it for Indian food like dough, chilli/onion,garlic paste, crushing the spinach, curliflower, coconut, carrots , salad etc

    Pros:
    It plastic is sturdy.
    It is easy to clean.
    Its sound level is normal.

    Cons
The slicer comes with it is little thin. They sells 1/4 inch slicer seperately (in $20)
It is heavy, It sticks with counter so well you need to apply lot of power to move it.
It is not worth to take one star out for these.

Make sure you will add water gradually until dough stops sticking the walls and then let it run for 30 seconds. It will stick all to the walls if more water is added at this stage. Also don't try to add more flour to compansate more water, it will make a big mess.

2-0 out of 5 stars This "classic" isn't worth it
No doubt, you might be intrigued by the relative savings offered on this model compared to other processors - including the more modern-looking Cuisinarts. Well, there is, as they say, a reason for everything.

I have used both a small older Mini-Prep as well as the DLC-2007 (the futuristic one). Both were awesome - they blended thoroughly and RARELY leaked (only when it was my fault and I filled the suckers full of liquid.

Anyhow, they passed the "how much do I get for my money" test with flying colors. This machine does not.

Each time I have used this thing - be it for cooked vegetables, salsa or pesto, the freaker leaked from the well. Unlike the other two Cuisinarts I mentioned - which were the older sister and the same-age sister, respectively, to this model - this one has a blade that fits LOOSELY on its inner assembly. Thus, whatever you are blending works its way up right out of the cylinder and into the well, from which it drips everywhere. The counter, the machine, the bowl.

I mean it - do not buy this model. It really sucks. You may save money, but you won't save time or headaches.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good product, easy to clean,
Product is easy to clean. This is the first food processor I have owned so I do not have much to compare it to.My only complaint is that when I made a soup that needed to be pureed, the soup went everywhere. The food processor leaked from the bottom before even turning on the machine.I have made a variety of other dishes in this with no problem such as hummus, salsa, etc. ... Editorial Review

Ever since blasting onto the literary scene with the Shamus Award-winning A Drink Before the War, Dennis Lehane has been the golden boy of noir. His Patrick Kenzie and Angela Gennaro novels are marvels of tight pacing, dialogue so good it gets under your skin and stays there, with dead-on portrayals of working-class Boston neighborhoods. Sure, he's the oft-proclaimed, hard-boiled heir to Hammett and Chandler, but Lehane also takes a page from the Hemingway school of hyper-intense writing. He pares away and pares away until he's left with the absolute essentials--and then those essentials just explode off the page.

In his five Kenzie-Gennaro novels, the detective duo is at the nexus of Lehane'sbig bang. Darkly funny and just this side of jaded, Angie and Patrick movethrough Dorchester's bleak streets with an assurance born of familiarity. It'simpossible to imagine these streets without the pair, or to imagine the pairaway from those streets. Mystic River, then, arrives as a bit of agamble, as Lehane moves from the sharp edges of portraiture to the broaderstrokes of landscape. No Angie, no Patrick: this neighborhood is on its own. It's not any prettier and certainly no friendlier, and its working-classfaçade still barely masks the irresistible tug of violent ways, means, and ends.

Twenty-five years ago, Dave Boyle got into a car. When he came back four dayslater, he was different in a way that destroyed his friendship with Sean Devineand Jimmy Marcus. Now Sean's a cop, Jimmy's a store owner with a prison recordand mob connections, and Dave's trying hard to keep his demons safely submerged. When Jimmy's daughter Katie is found murdered, each of the men must confront apast that none is eager to acknowledge. Lehane tugs delicately on the strandsthat weave this neighborhood together, testing for their strengths andweaknesses; this novel seems as much anthropological case study as thriller.

By turns violent and pensive, Mystic River is vintage Lehane. How good isit? You may go in missing Angie and Patrick, but after a few pages you won'teven realize they're gone. Lehane's noir is still black magic. --KellyFlynn ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Don't Let This One Pass
I couldn't believe myself crying over this book. The story is dark, sad and overwhelming. Hats off to Dennis Lehane for his clever way of making each of the main character a character that you'll end up either symphatising or liking it instead of hating it even though each of them has a deep dark secret lurking in the root. I could actually feel for the characters - Jimmy, Sean and Dave and I love how the book didn't make me feel that I was actually reading a detective story of a murder mystery. Instead, I was too engrossed with the turmoils, the love, the likes, the hatred, the feelings, the sad, the happiness, the memories, the laughter, the crying, the cruelty, and the kindness that make the characters look real, logic and alive instead of just characters from a novel. It's a gripping narrative and story, a thoughtful piece of writing. I couldn't put the book down and I recommend you to read it.

Three childhood friends from different parts of town. An abduction. These same boys, now men, meet again 25 years later. One is a detective, one has just found out his daughter has been murdered, and one comes home at 3am covered with blood. Their lives intertwined since childhood, these men are again brought together by this brutal murder.

Lehane does a great job of capturing the emotions of these three men and weaving them into this murder mystery.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Great New American Novel Noir - Mystic River
Dennis Lehane is a master at creating mood. With "Mystic River" he paints a portrait of a bleak working class neighborhood, Boston's East Buckingham Flats, and its inhabitants who are doomed to spend generations stuck in the dark, brooding environment, just a breath away from exploding into violence. I used to think of Dennis Lehane as an excellent writer of urban thrillers and mysteries. After reading "Mystic River," I consider him to be one of America's great new literary voices. His characters are real, rich and complex; his dialogue is as true as the characters who speak it. The narrative is spare and elegant. And the plot is edge-of-your-seat suspenseful, always developing a new twist.

The novel opens with three angry eleven year-old boys, Jimmy Marcus, Sean Devine and David Boyle, pushing each other around on one of the neighborhood streets. A car pulls up and two, plain clothes cops, (apparently), aggressively order David into their car. Terrified, David admits he doesn't live on that street. One man says they're going to drive Dave home and tell his Mom he's been fighting. Then the three drive away, leaving the other two boys with sick feelings in their guts. These feelings of fear, and something gone terribly awry, will remain with them all their lives. The two men were not cops. And Dave never reaches his mother that day, nor for many days afterward. This incident will link the lives, and the destinies, of these three boys forever.

Twenty-five years have passed, and the boys are men now, living in the same neighborhood, not far from where they spent their childhood. The events of a seemingly innocent Saturday night on the town, turn violent. Murder most vicious is the outcome, and it brings all three, inextricably, back together.

This tale of friendship, family, loyalty and revenge is just plain brilliant in its intensity. The unsettled feelings the novel evoked in me, stayed with me for days after I completed it. This is one of the best, well-crafted novels I have read in a very long time. Kudos to Dennis Lehane!

    Editorial Review

Grab your tissues and send the guys away, because Divine Secrets of the Ya-Ya Sisterhood is the most pedigreed chick flick since Steel Magnolias. You can tell by the title and the novelish names of the Louisiana ladies from Rebecca Wells's precious bestseller. First there's Sidda (Sandra Bullock), a successful playwright still wrestling with her manipulative mother, Vivi (Ellen Burstyn), after a traumatic upbringing. Then there's longtime friends Teensy (Fionnula Flanagan), Necie (Shirley Knight), and Caro (scene-stealer Maggie Smith), from Vivi's secret club of "Ya-Ya Priestesses," together since childhood and determined to heal the rift between Sidda and her mom. Through an ambitious flashback structure (including Ashley Judd as the younger Vivi), screenwriter and first-time director Callie Khouri (who wrote Thelma & Louise) establishes a rich context for this mother-daughter reunion. There's plenty of humor to temper the drama, which inspires Bullock's best work in years. Definitely worth a look for the curious, but only fans of Wells's fiction will feel any twinge of loyalty. --Jeff Shannon ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Sandra Bullock is my role model
Sandra Bullock is so funny, spunky, and a talented actress. This is my favorite movie of hers.I've seen all her movies. In each she is bubbly and fun-loving and cool. She's a great role model for young girls.I liked 'Miss Congenaitly'and 'Hope Floats.' I'm a 15-year-old girl who adores her. She's my favorite actress and celebrity and she's always making great movies.I loved this movie. It's about a playwright in New York City named Sidda Walker who has a torn realionship with her flaky mother, who gave her a tough upbringing in Lousiana.Sidda tells 'Time' magazine about her unhappy childhood and eccentric mother, causing Vivi Walker to swear she'll never speak her daughter again. However, after her long-time friends the Ya-Yas step in to show Sidda the story behind it all, both learn more about each other and themselves.Ashley Judd plays Vivi as a young woman and in flashbacks it shows Sidda as a little girl, growing up in the South where she both remembers the hard times when her mom's "drunken rages" hurt her and also the good times, when her mom made sure she got to go on a plane ride that she was scared to go on at first but in the end it was her best memory of her mother when Sidda sees in the end her mama really did love her.Sandra Bullock plays Sidda well, and is funny and emotional at the same time. Also Ashley Judd plays Vivi in her teen years, and it shows how by the friendship of her long-time friends that she made it through all it.The Ya-Ya's close bond shows how friendship really can help you through tough times and good times. The main value in this dramatic comedy is that your friends will always be there for you in the end and how your parents may not be perfect, but they always care about you in the end, too. The Ya-Yas are really funny, too.I loved this movie and I liked the book, too.Sandra Bullock is the best actress and role model on the face of the planet and she rocks.

    2-0 out of 5 stars Unh-unh
Having looked forward to this adaption of the popular novel, I found this production to be rather flat. While the older actresses turned in credible performances, Bullock failed to adequately portray Sidda, the central character. The script also failed to illustrate the process Sidda goes through in coming to understand her mother. Devoid of psychological process or insight, this movie fails to convey the depth and meaning of its source. Disappointing and boring.

4-0 out of 5 stars A Divine Movie
Oh the story of mothers and daughters a never-ending battle between good and evil. This is the movie that any daughter and mother can relate too. I love this movie and watch it often.

The movie starts as a grown Sidda(Sandra Bullock)and now famous playwright talks to the Times about her childhood-telling some less than flattering things about her mother. When Sidda's mother reads the article all hell breaks loose. That's when the Ya-Yas come in good friends to Vivine they decide it's their task to help Sidda understand her mother's past so, they do what any good friend would do- kidnap Sidda and tell her the secrets the Ya-Yas have shared. Through this ordeal Sidda understands a little more about herself and the relationship she has with her mother evening learning to forgive her mother for some abuse she suffered as a child. All in all this is a hillarous coming to terms with life comedy. I found myself questioning my own relationship with my mother.

Sandra Bullock gives her best performance, while the rest of the all star cast shines just as brightly. This a movie that every mother and daughter should watch together! Perfect treat for mother's day or a girls night movie fest! All in all don't wait click the buy now button! ... Read more

    Editorial Review

Much will be made of Julia Roberts's wardrobe in ErinBrockovich--a brash parade of daring hemlines and Wonderbra confidence. Roberts is unabashedly sexy in the title role of this fact-based comedy-drama, but she and director Steven Soderbergh are far too intelligent to rely solely on high heels and cleavage. Susannah Grant's brassy screenplay fuels this winning combination of star, director, and material, firing on all pistons with maximum efficiency. With Ed Lachman, his noted cinematographer from The Limey, Soderbergh tackles this A-list project with the fervor of an independent, combining a no-frills look with kinetic panache and the same brisk editorial style he used in the justly celebrated Out of Sight.

Broke and desperate, the twice-divorced single mom Erin bosses her way into a clerical job with attorney Ed Masry (Albert Finney), who's indebted to Erinafter failing to win her traffic-injury case. Erin is soon focused on suspicious connections between a mighty power company, its abuse of toxic chromium, and the poisoned water supply of Hinkley, California, where locals have suffered a legacy of death and disease. Matching the dramatic potency of Norma Rae and Silkwood, Erin Brockovich filters cold facts through warm humanity, especially in Erin's rapport with dying victims and her relationship with George (superbly played by Aaron Eckhart), a Harley-riding neighbor who offers more devotion than Erin's ever known. Surely some of these details have been embellished for dramatic effect, but the factual basis of Erin Brockovich adds a boost ofsatisfaction, proving that greed, neglect, and corporate arrogance are no match against a passionate crusader. (Trivia note: The real Erin Brockovich appears briefly as a diner waitress.) --Jeff Shannon ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Well worth seeing
There still ARE people like Erin Brockovich who care about others in this world, and who are willing to put themselves on the line to try to make a difference, and if you aren't inspired & warmed (& entertained) by this tale, you must be comatose.

I know what I'm talking about because I once went on a similar crusade with the legal system to try to help some teenagers I didn't initially know from Adam, and I got all the flack, mistrust, etc. that Erin got. When I saw this movie, everything rang true - that's how it really happens in life.

Our whole family watched this DVD together (we have daughters in junior high & high school) and despite the language and "R" rating, I think it was excellent for them to get such a realistic look at the world's problems & such a positive message about the impact we as individuals can have when we take a stand on something.

2-0 out of 5 stars Asking for movies/DVDs for the whole family
It is such a waste! That's the first thing that came to mind after watching this DVD. Why? Because for a movie with such a good story line, it was fouled by Julia Robert's cursings, swearings etc. You may call me a prude, that's alright. But definitely to purchase a DVD for keeps and where the whole family can watch, this DVD is definitely out for me. In this day and age of the DVD, and not just movie theaters alone, it would be real nice for producers, directors, script writers etc. to realize that the money is to be made too through the sale of DVDs where the whole family can watch.

4-0 out of 5 stars Hmmm...
Julia Roberts is winsome and not at all cloying in this *Silkwood* meets *Love Canal* meets *Marie* meets *Pretty Woman* extravaganza. In fact, I'd almost admit I'm beginning to like her, now that I've gotten past all the years of oppressive hype. But it's not her fault. She seems like a genuinely nice woman who is growing up to be a competent actress. And *Erin Brockovich* supplies her with just the kind of role that the world like's to see her in - beleaguered but with spunk (an often repellant combination). She plays the real-life whistle-blower of the title (the real Erin has a role as a waitress in the movie), and proves she's a real actress by following the time-honored path beaten by Hollywood actresses since time immemorial - playing white trash. But, of course, she's white trash with a heart of gold, who cares only about taking care of her three children, and finding justice in the world. With her bra showing most of the time, and her New Jersey-deluxe hair, she actually does a credible job of it, and that's where it's possible to develop compassion for her character. And thank God for that - for without her, there's little else memorable about this movie that makes it any different than the kind of movies made for the Lifetime channel. Finney is excellent as her boss, and the handsome Latham is wasted as the boyfriend when the love story just kind of fizzles out. Many say it's the best work Roberts has done. I wouldn't know. But, I'm always a sucker for seeing the little guy win against the behemoth powers-that-be, and even though it's been done over and over again (*A Civil Action* ring any bells? *Norma Rae*?) ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A very nice cookbook!
I received this cookbook as a wedding gift. I really have enjoyed it ever since, even though I mostly cook without ever looking at any of the recipes. This book is very nicely organized and is a wonderful reference source, though. I cooked quiche and chocolate chip cookies from it, as well as many other things, and they all turned out beautifully and yummy! I also love how the book provides caloric information per serving on each of the recipes.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great cookbook, one small annoyance
I received this cookbook as a wedding gift and it has been a daily fixture in meal preparation. So many different recipes, there is something for every family. The one thing that annoys me about the cookbook, is also the thing I love. The book lays flat with it's 3-ring binder. Very convenient! Yet the pages are not reinforced so the wear on the pages will eventually tear the holes. I now have many loose pages in my cookbook. Would love to see the next edition have some kind of reinforcement along the hole punched edge.
Another big plus I've discovered is the page of metric conversions. My husband and I are currently stationed in Europe and it's great to be able to just flip to another section when I'm trying to use my European stove or use something packaged in grams but measured in ounces in the recipe. For some reason my husband doesn't like me to drag the laptop into the kitchen to look up conversion charts while I'm cooking. :)
I would recommend this cookbook to everyone. It's great for beginners and experienced cooks alike.

5-0 out of 5 stars What a GREAT Cookbook
I originally purchased this book for my mom but when my boyfriend saw the book he LOVED it too!So I had to go and purchase another one so they both could have the cookbook at there dispose all the time.

It has GREAT recipes - We've made SO much from this cookbook.
The recipes are not difficult to prepare and make.I would HIGHLY recommend it to anyone.

3-0 out of 5 stars Average at best!
This book looks as if the author collected crock pot recipes from every church in America and threw them together in a book. For example, you get Mary Ellen's recipe for meatballs, and Irene's recipe for meatballs, and Elaine's recipe for meatballs, etc.In fact, most of the 11 recipes for meatballs contain only minor differences.

Having said this, the book does contain some good recipes for basic crock pot cooking. It just would have been better if the author had only included the best recipes for each dish instead of every recipe she collected.

3-0 out of 5 stars Simple but way too bland/boring
Since over 100 people have posted reviews I won't dissect it. However, I'd like to say my family did not like the recipes in this book. We are used to fairly spicy, complex flavors and while the recipes were nutritious and easy, we just picked at them because they were too bland for our tastes.

My Mother-in-law gave me this book because she loves it.Which is not surprising because she likes her food bland and not challenging. Undoubtedly some families will like the recipes but I'll give my copy away.

    5-0 out of 5 stars A SLOW-COOKERS BEST FRIEND
For decade the slow-cooker/crock pot has been relegated to the dark corners of the kitchen cupboard or maybe even in the basement.Rarely used except perhaps when taking a dish to work or a party. The crock pot was in the realm of near useless cooking appliances like the salad-shooter.But Crockpots have been making a comeback in recent years as they lend themselves to our busy lifestyles.once thought of as grandmas old piece of junk, Crocks now are capable of producing some of the best recipes you could ever want.Throw it in before work and it's ready after work.

    Editorial Review

Ideal for dinner parties of two or four, this breadmaker produces aromatic, piping hot fresh bread in 45 minutes. Compact enough to easily fit on a countertop (or table!), the appliance produces loaves that are 3-1/2 inches by 5-1/2 inches and 4-1/2 inches tall, just the right size for intimate dinner parties. The oval bread pan gives the loaves a distinctive shape and a little dimple. Operation is as easy as putting the dough into the breadmaker and pressing two buttons, and several recipes are included, such as sunflower oat wheat, Swiss-jalapeño, and feta cheese--and nutritional information for each recipe is also included. The directions are extensive, complete with a troubleshooting guide. The breadmaker's viewing window is especially nice, and lets you watch your bread take shape. This breadmaker comes with a 90-day warranty. --Ariel Meadow Stallings ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars FANTASTIC MACHINE
I have used bread machines for 15 years. My favorite thing about them:The ease of making fresh bread (my favorite food) and how it tasted freshly made; and the smell when it is baking. My least favorite things: the often large and oddly shaped loaves, and how it tasted a couple of days later.

Until I bought this machine, my favorite machine bread was "the 58 minute loaf" that my present machine makes.I love the quickness and the lovely somewhat yeasty taste.

So as you can imagine, the Just For Dinner Breadmaker is a combination of all of my favorite bread machine aspects. It is fun, it is quick, it is delicious, it is eaten in two days, then I get to try a new recipe.

I ordered my machine on Saturday, May 14th and opted for the free (slower) shipping. My machine arrived at 7PM on May 19th.At 8PM I had my first loaf, perfectly shaped and browned, wheat bread cooling on the rack.My husband and I ate almost the entire loaf, it was so good. The next morning I made the buttermilk wheat loaf.It was JUST as perfect.

I highly recommend this excellent machine.

5-0 out of 5 stars Go ahead, experiment!
I have been using my little guy at least a couple of times a week for months and have NEVER made a bad loaf of bread. That said, I stopped using the recipe book after the first two loaves.I use the generic formula of flour, liquid, fat, sweet, salt and yeast as a springboard for the imagination.I have used many varieties and combinations of whole grain flours whithout cutting them with white flour. I have added cooked whole grains and raw or cooked seeds, nuts, and fruit.I don't bother with milk powder; instead I use milk, sour milk, buttermilk, soy milk, or the whey from yogurt as the liquid. For the fat I have used a variety of vegetable oils, melted butter, and melted shortening.I have succesfully used a teaspoon of sugar instead of a tablespoon. I have substituted brown sugar, honey, molassas, even a fruit reduction for the sweetener.

I add all of the wet/moist ingredients together in a bowl, microwave to reach the recommended temperature, then transfer to bread machine insert. Then I combine all of the dry ingredients and microwave for a few seconds to take take the chill off as I store my grainy things in the freezer.Dry on top of wet, jiggle it down level, and into the machine.Use that opportunity at the initiation of the continuous mixing cycle to check on how the ingredients are coming together and adjust the wet/dry ratio accordingly.

One reviewer complained that you can't make rolls or buns; not so!Preheat your oven when you start the machine. (I get it to ~400 degrees F.)When it beeps that it is ready to begin the bake cycle, turn the bread machine off, dump the dough out onto a floured or oiled surface, make whatever shape you want and pop it into the oven. (I use a baking stone.)I have made dinner rolls, sandwich rolls, flat bread, bread sticks, even crackers!I am going to experiment with bagels next.

Use your common sense. If you have ingredients with inherent moistness, fat, sweetness or saltiness, cut your liquid, fat, sweetener or salt. The more you play, the better you will get at making bread products customized exactly to your personal tastes.

5-0 out of 5 stars Absolutely Perfect
I wanted a small-scale machine that would make a modest size bread of good quality. This machine totally fits the bill.Foolproof (I never used a bread machine before at all), quick, quiet.I have nothing I would want to be different about this item.I'd highly recommend it for singles and couples who want to make high-quality bread at home. ... 1-0 out of 5 stars Huge step backwards, B&D blew this one
I had a cordless Black & Decker can opener for years that finally gave out. I figured the Gizmo was just the latest version of that, so I bought one. Big mistake on my part.

This thing struggles to open cans, is difficult to mount and won't hold a charge. you can it even charge it while it is in the wall holder.

I really like cordless openers and as soon as I find another, the gizmo is going into the trash.

1-0 out of 5 stars Gizmo not so user friendly
I purchased this and within a 5 minutes, it was packaged back up and ready for return. This item looks too good to be true, and it is.The item cannot even be held because it is so large around and not easy to work.I noticed that there were several that had been re-taped and I guess it is because others have returned it also.

    1-0 out of 5 stars Gizmo/Shmizmo
I think this item is a piece of garbage! You have to putz around with it just to get it to line up on your can and even though it says you can use just one hand don't believe it!When it does open your can it leaves the lid with dangerously jagged edges and the user must use extreme caution while handling the lid---this is not an item for children to use even under supervision.I wind up using my cheap hand opener just to finish the job---save your money!Black and Decker should have devoted more time to this one while in the planning stages! ... Sit down. Take off your shoes. Use a big toe to turn on this electric foot massager. (There's a toe-friendly on/off switch at the bottom.) Use that toe to select the intensity of the foot massage you desire (high or low). Cold feet? Direct the toe to the infrared switch for muscle-relaxing, penetrating heat. Now lean back and run your tired, aching feet over the massager's vibrating surface while different-size bumps rejuvenate you according to the ancient practice of reflexology (or, if you don't accept reflexology's tenets, soothingly stimulate your feet). This durable plastic device measures 14 by 12 inches and is angled so your feet rest comfortably while you're seated. The massager carries a two-year warranty against defects. --Fred Brack ... 2-0 out of 5 stars Cheap product...beware!!
I used this product for about 2 1/2 months before it crapped out.Now it won't even turn on.I'll admit though it was nice to have under the desk while I worked but now it is a worthless piece of plastic. The heat function is nothing great either.Just a bunch of red LED lights for all I can tell.

If you want to buy a foot massager, it might be worth spending an extra 10 or 20 bucks.Although the HoMedics one when it works, isn't bad for the price...it's really a cheap product and will not last.

5-0 out of 5 stars Oh this is good!
I recently decided to indulge myself a little bit.Hey I'm 42 and have been raisng my kids, (and husband) diligently for a long time now.So on my birthday I slurged a bit on Amazon.I bought(and am highly recommending all of these): this amazing foot massager- heaven, singing lessons on CD- Voice Lessons To Go by Vaccarino because I was just tired of hiding my voice when we all would sing in the car, The Artist Way by Cameron so I could feel some sort of creativity for myself again, and the New Sex Now video (well that was for me and my husband).Well, happy happy. We should all splurge on ourselves just a bit sometimes.Aren't we worth it?

Introduce a little outdoor tranquility indoors and enjoy the sights, sounds, and smells of thiscandle fountain. The elegant design includes everything you need to build your own calming light fountain, including a metallic poly fountain dish, polished river rocks, a wax tiered candleholder, twelvearomatherapy vanilla-scented tea candles, and a water pump with variable flow control. It only took us afew minutes to set it all up, and soon we were basking in a stress-free utopia, the sounds of the streetforgotten. The soft candlelight and soothing sounds of water are deliciously calming, while the fountainacts as a natural humidifier. The unique tea-light design ensures long-lasting use: simply change the tealights when they burn low. Our only caution is that the fountain should not be used in excessively hotrooms, since the wax tiers could melt. The fountain takes up a mere 8 by 9 inches of space on a desktop ortable, making it an ideal gift for those who want to integrate art and nature into their home. --ArielMeadow Stallings ... 3-0 out of 5 stars It's OK
Bought this for my mother for Christmas. I was a bit disappointed that the sound of the water spalshing was not as load as I thought it should be.This was initially. However, over time while visiting my mom, I noticed it sounds a bit louder now.I think more rocks are needed with the set.It looks very nice though.

4-0 out of 5 stars Calming and lovely, you can't go wrong with this candle
I received the candle fountain for christmas and had it set up and going in about 10min.Lovely vanilla tea-lites are great, with more than enough provided(most other companies only give one burn cycles worth)
I personally don't like water splashing out of the bowl or listening to a raging torrent of water...the pump for this product is blissfully quiet, and even on the middle setting the water trickles and tinkles gently back down to the stones...try creating "dams" and pockets with the stones to create different waterflows and sounds...
I agree with others, this is not a unit to light it and leave... I had it burning for at least 3 hours and noticed the "melting smell" too... I thought the pump might have heated up but realized the tea-lights had burned down and the metal cup was heating up the pillars...so YES-one must ALWAYS be attentive to candles when they are lit...
But overall..one of my most favorite gifts!!!

2-0 out of 5 stars Boring
This fountain could use a larger water pump to provide for a better cascading water effect. The water trickles out in small veins down the side of the stairs, but the water flow isn't very steady.I was sort of disappointed by this fountain.

On the plus side: The candle fountain comes with plenty of tea-lite candles in a vanilla scent.(For those having problems with the plastic tea-lite containers melting...try the metal-lined tea-lite candles. You can find these at any candle store. ... ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Too dated for me!
I wish I'd paid more attention to the publication date on this book. I also think the book should be subtitled: "A HISTORY of Scrapbooking and Memory Makers." There were few entries included that were from 2003, and many were from the late 1990's. Scrapbooking has changed so much in the last 8-10 years, and while this book serves as a great reminder of "look how far we've come!" it wasn't what I was looking for. Too many of the layouts featured are very dated. There were a few that I enjoyed, but those I probably already have seen from my years of getting the magazine!

5-0 out of 5 stars Plenty of good ideas
I got this book for around $8 from Hamilton Books [great source for terrific prices]. While there are plenty of pages that don't suit my taste, there were just as many that were pure inspiration.

5-0 out of 5 stars A rich gallery of scrapbook pages from 96 to 03
Memory Makers magazine has been on newsstands since 1996 - the early days of the scrapbooking explosion into mainstream American culture. From that time the founder and editorial staff have witnessed not only the growth of this popular craft, but the births of all the trends and styles that followed. This book, Outstanding Scrapbook Pages, is a summary of their most distinctive and significant reader-submitted pages that have been featured in the magazine until early 2003.

According to the Introduction, the 250 page selections were difficult to choose. The staff had to review "every page of every issue" since the beginning before voting on favorites. The criteria for being included were:How influential was that page on later scrapbooking trends? Were the techniques extraordinary, the photos exceptional, or perhaps the journaling memorable? Was there something unique in the design/idea that made it stand out? Based on what I have seen here, every page in this book answers yes to at least one of those questions.

I happen to have collected several of the other books published by Memory Makers, all of which showcase page examples of the techniques being discussed.I wasn't terribly surprised to recognize many of the same pages here that were used previously in their other books; makes sense to me, because after all, the most outstanding examples of techniques for their teaching books would probably be influential, memorable, and/or extraordinary in general.Still, this book was a wee bit redundant for me.On the other hand, readers who are new to scrapbooking will appreciate the quick retrospective on the craft, which helps them catch up to modern trends in one read.Longtime readers of the magazine may cherish this nice collection of favorites, especially if it means that they can finally donate a few shelf-fulls of back issues to the local library in exchange for one slim volume that chronicles the cream of the crop. Andbased on the general excellence of this gallery of scrapbooking art, I can heartily recommend it to anybody looking for page ideas.

1-0 out of 5 stars Great Magazine: Don't buy through Amazon.
I've purchased this magazine in grocery stores and liked it, so I subscribed through Amazon. The company actually responsible for seeing the subscription is filled is FW PUBLICATIONS.I ordered in March of 2003.September rolled around and I still hadn't seen and issue. After several phone calls to FW Publications, I finally received an issue.I've received four issues total. Here it is, March 2004, and they've stopped sending magazines.Apparently they think my subscription is finished after I've received half the magazines I've paid for.It would have been cheaper for me to buy them from the grocery store.Go ahead and subscribe to this magazine, just don't do it through Amazon.Their partner company is VERY UNRELIABLE.

4-0 out of 5 stars Love it, Love it!
This is a great magazine for scrapbooking.Full of fun, fresh layouts that gets your creative juices flowing. My only complaints would be that I like to read the journaling on the layouts that people have done and MM doesn't shoot the photos of the layouts so you can do that, and they frequently showcase layouts that are too much work.Who has time to do some of those pages?

If you want a 5 star magazine, check out Creating Keepsakes Magazine.CK has just gone to 12 issues a year and usually has a freebie clip art page with each issue. You can read the journaling on the layouts, and CK has Becky Higgins, Scrapping Diva!

Or, do what I do and subscribe to both!

    Happy Scrapping!

Even if you will never make a "gourd candle" or a "Fortuny-inspired tablecloth," Martha Stewart Living can't be beat for its wealth of ideas concerning what Martha calls "good things." A crafter for craft's sake, and an obsessively organized woman (just look at her personal calendar, included in the first few pages), there is no concept or task that is too mundane for Martha. Like Martha herself, the magazine is impeccably organized--recipes and decorating instructions appear with full-color photos, each filed in their own sections of "cooking," "keeping," "crafts," "home," and "collecting." Learn to slip matched sets of bed linens into one of their pillowcases for easy and convenient shelving, make washcloth mitts, and coordinate mismatched towels with decorative ribbon. A whiz at flower arranging, dinner parties, card and sewing crafts, and decorating, Martha covers and conquers all areas of the home--plus weddings, baby showers, and holidays. --Daphne Durham ... 3-0 out of 5 stars inspirational but...
I have had a hard time, not only finding the ingredients for recipes and crafts, but also getting them to work out the way they claim they should in the magazine.

5-0 out of 5 stars style for the masses
This is a fine magazine with truly scrumptious recipes if you're into the kitchen/food thing, home ideas that one can actually use (or that will inspire one to do something similar), and exquisite photography, usually quite stark and simple, of ways to enhance the aesthetic beauty of one's life.
One can serve a plain meal of soup and bread, and make it look like a feast, if you get into Martha's way of looking at things, and it does not take a spending spree to have a "Martha Look". Her basic table settings tend to be white china (one can use mix and match white plates from the local thrift store), clear glass, and colorful fabric...add some well shaped twigs in a glass vase for a centerpiece, and voila ! you have a table that could be shown in this lovely magazine; a rule for "The Look" seems to be the absence of clutter.

Of the regular monthly articles, I like "Ask Martha", which solves problems posed by readers, from health issues to how best to clean your eyeglasses, to "How can I get the coating on my chicken to stay in place when I am frying it ?".
"Clip-Art Craft" is another I appreciate, where in the August '04 edition for example, there are attractive templates for postcards, which one can copy onto card stock, glue a 4 x 6 photo to, and send to your friends. It's another grand idea from Martha !
You'll find articles on antiques, pets, gardening, seasonal fruits and vegetables, and much more, and on the last page, the yummy "Cookie of the Month".

Martha Stewart has brought style and good merchandise at affordable prices for those of us who are budget conscious, but like nice things. I have bought her bedding, and her bathroom accessories have graceful shapes and are an excellent value, and this magazine is one of my favorite aspects of the "Martha industry". The Patricians I know are not usually kind to Martha, but Proles & Plebes like me tend to greatly appreciate her.
Martha, we're going to stick by you through thick and thin !

    Editorial Review

It took nearly a decade to find a mutually agreeable screenplay, but the stars and director of Pretty Woman finally reunited to make Runaway Bride, wisely avoiding any attempt to recapture the 1990 film'selusive magic. The result is a perfectly pleasant romantic comedy that would've fared better critically (despite boffo box office) if it hadn't been overshadowed by its blockbuster predecessor. It's certainly a more credible film than Pretty Woman, trading a far-fetched fairy tale (hooker hooks up with tycoon? bah!) for a more amiably conventional plot about big-city reporter Ike Graham (Richard Gere) who falls for a small-town handywoman Maggie Carpenter (Julia Roberts) with a nasty habit of fleeing from the altar in a recurring state of premarital panic.

Both characters are instantly likable, and the smooth dialogue by Josann McGibbon and Sara Parriott only occasionally panders to sitcom cuteness. And despite his routine sacrifice of subtle craft for commercial appeal, director Garry Marshall knows when to trust his stars and material, lending this movie a casual charm (aided by a terrific supporting cast) that never feels forced or artificial. The whole thing's utterly predictable, riding on the suspenseless question of whether Maggie will dump her sports-nut fiancé (Christopher Meloni) and tie the knot with Ike. It's a foregone conclusion after the usual games of romantic cat and mouse, but the chemistry between Roberts and Gere is undeniable, and with a decade's worth of additional stardom between them, they shine as brightly as ever. --Jeff Shannon ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Life imitates art
Seems that if one was to pick up news paper nowadays that the premise of this story is not that far fetched.

To those people that do not like movies that are formula or predictable, this is probably not one of those movies that you would like. For those of you who are expecting some sort of breakthrough movie like "Pretty Woman" (1990), this movie is probably not one that you would like.
Now with that said, this is a great formula and many of the details are not predictable. It is the interaction between the actors and the visuals (multi colored hair) that give this movie its worth. This movie contains psychology and morals that would give Gary Zukav a run for his money.
We already know how wonderful the interaction is between Richard Gere and Julia Roberts. Don't overlook the cast of supporting actors that even give the two-dimensional characters a third dimension. Remember Rita Wilson form "Sleepless in Seattle"(1993)? Well she plays the ex-wife of Richard Gere and adds some stability to the hectic events. And who can forget Joan Cusack form "My Blue Heaven" (1990)? She plays Peggy Flemming.
Now in stead of spending time comparing, lets spend some time being entertained. All in all it's cute movie in worth watching.

1-0 out of 5 stars More On-Screen "Magic" from Roberts/Gere
Its a shame we're only treated to ONE movie per decade of the dynamic duo of Julia "world's largest mouth" Roberts and Richard "Hampster" Gere.I found myself laughing out loud - not once - during this movie.

1-0 out of 5 stars More Trashy Roberts
Paramount should have been shut down for making a film that glorifies a woman with total disrespect for her fiance(s), men in general, and everyone else in her life.Roberts is her usual strange self and should be sent the bill for all the resources wasted finding Jennifer Wilbanks after she decided it would be cool to imitate this braindead movie. ...
