1-0 out of 5 stars Warning
I have had the same experience as Ellen who also reviewed this magazine, regarding Old House Journal. I never subscribed to the magazine but somehow received two issues and then was billed for a full year's subscription. I ignored the subscription payment notice figuring it was junk, and now have received two collection agency letters. I have tried calling Old House Journal and was told twice by two different customer service reps that my subscription had been cancelled out of the system. Then why am I still receiving debt collection notices? I can't believe that these companies can get away with this. And to ruin my credit for a measly $21. I agree with Ellen... if you are unfortunately linked somehow to Old House Journal, be prepared to be reported into debt collection, even if you never subscribed to the magazine.

1-0 out of 5 stars Horrible Customer Service
The magazine was fine, but after one subscription I wanted to cancle. But, they kept on sending my magazine and then sent me to a collection agency, North Shore Agency.I paid the bill and called Old House Journal to let them know it was paid (North Shore Agency doesn't include a phone number on thier collection notice). Then, 6 months later I get a nother collection notice from North Shore Agency stating that I had renewed my subscription, which was a lie.Don't get this magazine unless you want to keep your subscription for life.Because if you don't they'll send you to a collection agency.

5-0 out of 5 stars A must-have if you own an old home
This magazine is invaluable for any owner and fan of older homes.Unlike other, more well-known magazines (you know...the one with the TV show) that tend to showcase new homes that look old, OHJ really sticks to the topic of period homes. Some of the articles deal with home improvement, historic preservation or just as an introduction to an architectural style.Like many OHJ readers, the back page, titled "Remuddling" is my favorite. It contains a reader-submitted photo of an older home that was horrendously "updated" with bizarre building materials or with no respect for the home's history or architectural style. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Great
I love this magazine.Itprovides great ideas that look good.Country is a lifestyle. This magazine exemplifies that.It shows all different styles of country. You don't have to fit into one look.I prefer this to Country Home, which generally is dated in their decorating.

3-0 out of 5 stars Too Many Ads
I used to like this magazine. However,it is so difficult now to find the text due to the ad-heavy format.I would pay more for a subscription and have a cleaner, less cluttered format.

Good Housekeeping does not send a notice to the person receiving the subscription in a timly manner. It shouldn't take 2 to 3 weeks to receive notification.

1-0 out of 5 stars Boring and full of ads!
My Dad bought this magazine for my mom and I usually pick up the copies to browse them. That is all both my mom in her fifties and I in my twenties do browse it as it is a joke.It is not that special it is chucked full of ads.The cover stories are dull and boring and many of the articles you would want to read have about one paragraph good information.I find this magazine a waste of our money. It will not be getting renewed at the end of the subscription. My mom has already stated that.

5-0 out of 5 stars More a community than a magazine

    5-0 out of 5 stars surprisingly un-sugary
I've sampled about every home-decor mag out there, and Mary Engelbreit's Home Companion is now on my short list of staples (Elle Decor, Met Home, House & Garden being the others). My taste runs to Hollywood Retro--a little bit sexy, citified and uncluttered, with a dash of humor--and makes use of a lot of thrift-store finds I've customized to the space. Like an earlier reviewer, I'm an unlikely candidate for ME paraphenelia, but her magazine is loaded with clever inspiration, and you won't suffer an overdose of sweetness. I especially like her concentration on the homes and work of independent artists ... and attention to animal causes, which are close to my heart.

5-0 out of 5 stars The BEST Magazine EVER!!
I truly do my happy dance when I go to the mailbox and find Mary's Home Companion Magazine. Then I spend at least two hours thoroughly delighted as I read it from cover to cover, and I can't wait till the next one.I, too have every issue since 1996 and I often go back and look at some of the great ideas presented over the years.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great discovery at garage sale!
I came acrossed an older stack of this magazine at a garage sale for $1.00. I have never spent such good money, not only have I poured over every magazine at least twice, but everyone that has been to my home and picks one up, begs to take them home with them. I have now subscribed, and plan on saving every one indefinitley. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Magazine
Ladies Home Journal has several features that readers will like. One of the most popular is "Can This Marriage Be Saved" featuring a couple that is having marital problems presenting both their sides and then a counselor's advise. Other columns include "How They Met", "Animal Affairs", and "Raising a Family". Each month there is an article featuring a family that acquired a house through Habitat. A nice feature is a column presenting a man's perspective called "Heart of a Husband". There are also articles on beauty, health, travel, and parenting. There are plenty of recipes and craft and decorating ideas. Each issue also includes a couple of celebrity interviews.

I highly recommend subscribing to Ladies Home Journal, you won't be disappointed!

5-0 out of 5 stars is your health making you fat?

4-0 out of 5 stars Keeps You Company
Ladies Home Journal provides practical advice on how busy women can be happier and more effective. The articles are straightforward, easy to read, interesting, and assume the reader is intelligent (which is more than I can say for many women's magazines). I especially like the health and fitness news because it usually pertains to women exclusively. The celebrity interviews are fun, too, and the recipes are easy enough for anyone to follow and enjoy. I give it four stars because I can always find at least one topic that really interests me in each issue. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Sunset: A Well Rounded Magazine
I've been a Sunset subscriber off and on for years. They are the most well-regarded magazine out here in California, for gardeners, cooks and do it your-selfers.

Each issue offers a regional spotlight, offering travel, lodging and special interest activities. It's a great resource for anyone looking for perhaps a different area to visit.

The cooks section is always great and usually I can find at least 4 recipes to use in my kitchen each issue. Sunset also offers their recipe annuals, which have become treasured favorites in my kitchen. These hardbound books are a compilation of all Sunsets recipes. For those that love bread baking, Sunset offers some simply awesome bread recipes. All recipes are tested first in Sunsets' kitchens, before publication.

Sunsets garden section contains monthly tips and reminders for doing seasonal chores. The planting guides are a novice gardeners best friend. Every issue devotes itself to between two and three garden projects-offered step by step, and again-only after being tested in Sunsets own gardens.

Add to that the many great home design feature and projects, you get a magazine worth 3 times the amount they charge. If you've never tried Sunset magazine, I can honestly say you're in for a treat.

4-0 out of 5 stars Bring back the good memories of living in Northen California
I moved to midwest a couple of years ago due to a job change. I am bored by the midwest life style. I dreamed of flying back to California all the time and every time I see California on TV, my eyes get wet in a second. Sunset brings the sunshine, color, food, garden and fragrance of California to my life. Everything in the magazine just looks so familiar.
I do hope the magazine report more exciting things I like about San Francisco and Napa Valley, like the county fair, small town July 4th celebration and fireworks, good Chinese restaurants, and organic farms. Oh, the peach at San Rafael's farmer's market is just wonderful. I fly there every year in September to catch the flavor king and flavor queen peaches, the sweet and fragrant grapes, the tender and crunchy cucumber, the lovely peapod, the new crop cashew nuts, and handsome harp player and the nice farmers.....I would call that a good life.

5-0 out of 5 stars West coast gardener's definitive guide
If you live west of the middle like I do you must also be addicted to this magazine.

I look forward to the release of every issue.Great articles on all sorts of things to do, places to go and gardening tips to savor, this magazine is all you need.

Go back and relish past issues too - there is never a dull feature. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars I liked it!
I am new to vegetarianism and at a loss for what to eat.I picked up this magazine and enjoyed it cover to cover.Nice recipes, lots of health info.I don't feel so lost.I don't want a militant magazine.I don't want to read shocking, alarming things.I already get the idea, which is why I picked up this magazine to begin with.I want to know how to get enough protein, nice dishes that I can get my carnivorous husband to eat.Hopefully, I'll be able to cajole him into going vegatarian, too, by pleasant example and health benefits.I liked it.

1-0 out of 5 stars Not worth the paper it's on
I subscribed to this magazine, in its new format, for a year and found maybe one original, inspiring recipe. The rest of the recipes could be found in even the smallest collection of vegetarian cookbooks. If you have a few veggie cookbooks, don't bother with this subscription. The articles aren't interesting or well-written either.

2-0 out of 5 stars not very useful unless you want recipes
Personally, after a year's subscription I got virtually no use or entertainment out of this magazine at all. It might depend on what you're looking for though. First of all, there's no true journalism in this magazine at all. For example, I would've liked to see some in-depth articles about what various advertizing terms actually tell you about animal treatment, what the full picture was on various nutritional contraversies regarding veg*anism, etc. They never have that sort of thing at all though.

The other thing is that, like the majority of veg*ans, I have a lot of problems with underweightedness and (occasionally) inadequate nutrition. VT, however, caters almost exclusively to those who are overweight and/or have eating disorders. Once, they even had an article about being an Atkin's vegan (I don't know how they can sleep at night advocating a diet that suicidal). I never saw a single VT article about how to gain weight, and hardly saw any passing mention of omega 3's, B12, or other nutrients that are severely lacking in an unsuplimented vegan diet. Overall, their conception of health is limited to weight loss, bizarre dietary obsessions, and yoga classes.

However, some people might find the magazine useful. The vast majority of the magazine is recipes, which to be honest I never really took advantage of. I basically never cook according to recipes, but if you do you might like the magazine a lot (especially if you're just a regular vegetarian). Also, if you need to lose weight, like I said, they have articles about it in every issue. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars I happen to enjoy this magazine...
I was just reading through the reviews and noticed a review from a person claiming that Chocolatier hadn't gotten her subscription right in 30 years......I also happen to own a copy of the first issue of Chocolatier and you are completely wrong on dates.Volume 1, Issue 1 is dated 1984...to date the magazine has been around for 21 years, far from the 30+ yearsyou are claiming.
While I was too young to collect this wonderful magazine when I was a child (I was under 10 years old at the time the first issue was released) I have purchased several back issues on eBay.And I, too, have nearly a complete set.
While there are some issues that have recipes I would not use, most issues have atleast 2 recipes that I do use.
I do not really care for the new format of Chocolatier.I can deal with 4 issues a year but the last issue that I took a look at, I actually found myself putting back on the shelf.I really find no use in using fresh herbs and flowers in ice creams and desserts. It just did not appeal to me at all.
Tish Boyle has taken over as the editor of the magazine and I suspect that this has a lot to do with the format change.I will take a look at the next issue to see what I think as I was also considering subscribing.
However I whole-heartedly recommend the back issues of Chocolatier, if you can get ahold of them.Really this is (or atleast used to be) an AWESOME magazine for dessert lovers.

2-0 out of 5 stars waste of money
I only recieve the magazine 4 issue a year, seems like nobody works there for a long time, and I have no place to write or call for the back(or is there any) lost issue.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great for the gardener and herb enthusiast
This magazine is focused mainly on offering information about herbs in their gardening and food aspects. This is a nice change from the many books to be found concerning the medicinal aspects of herbs.I enjoy growing herbs for spices along with the medicinal purposes, so this has been a valuable resource. One feature in this magazine that I have really valued is the section offering information on regional herb festivals and other organized events.I also particularly like the featured herb articles-- especially the one on lavender. There are many, many interesting advertisements as well.

5-0 out of 5 stars Each issue has various herbal themes
Her Companion is focused on the raising and use of herbs. There are different magazines that focus on different aspects of herbs. This one mostly covers herbs a food and food supplements. The pictures are glossy and there are many slick ads for commercial herbs and items as containers for bottling your own. I have actually used this subscription to help design and build a small raised garden in the back yard.

4-0 out of 5 stars Super Informative for the Herb Gardener
This is a super magazine for the beginning to advanced
herb gardener with the focus being on gardening and growing
herbs, as well as their culinary and craft oriented usages.
Less emphasis is placed on the new agey / medicinal usages
although basic medical uses are sometimes covered. In my opinion

5-0 out of 5 stars Gorgeous Food

Bon Appetit has been a regular addition to my cooking arsenal since its inception. It is simply a gorgeous magazine, with beautifully laid out photography and excellent features. This is a magazine for the person who loves to cook.

Unlike other food publications, Bon Appetit offers earthy robust recipes and features that appeal to the everyday cook. I love in particular: Cooking For Two, Cooking Light and the section devoted to bringing recipes from well known restaurants around the country. In this section, readers write in and request a recipe from a restaurant that really impressed them. It's fun, informative and often amazing how really uncomplex some of the dishes are.

Underneath all the good looking dishes and witty dialogue, lies the heart of Bon Appetit. It's about home and very basic values, which I think accounts for its huge popularity. Through my reading this magazine, I've come to appreciate the homely root vegetables, to keep a well stocked pantry, and to avoid costly mistakes in buying cookware.

I think it makes a lovely gift for a young bride, who might be nervous about cooking and entertaining. With it's no nonsense approach to cuisine, plus the support of a stellar online community-Epicurious.com, it is a very nice package for anyone who wants to simply cook creatively and well.

5-0 out of 5 stars Really good recipes
When I was going through my old cooking magazines a few years ago before a major move to another state, I found to my surprise that the recipes I most wanted to keep were in Bon Appetit. Although I also enjoyed reading Gourmet, I realized that I had cooked relatively few of the recipes in that magazine. I am ready to make another magazine purge, and I expect the same thing to happen. Gourmet is fun and interesting, but Bon Appetit is a keeper.

4-0 out of 5 stars I love to go from page to page.......
I've recently started reading my Bon Appetit from cover to cover just because everything is so good (pictures, recipes, articles, etc...).Having three small busy children, my time is limited for meals during the week and my favorite section of this book is "Fast Easy Fresh".I can always find a few recipes that are easy to make yet edible in the eyes of my children. My second favorite section is "Readers' Timesaving Recipes".These readers seem to share the same type of lifestyle as me (limited kitchen time) and they submit very yummy, quick recipes that I can whip up in no time.

My husband and I believe that dinnertime as a family is so important to the well-being of our children that making meals that require endless preparation and cooking just isn't a priority for us.

I also love to entertain and have dinner parties so the new column that begins in the April 2005 issue entitled "Party Improv" is a great addition.I like that they give big, delicious ideas with little effort... including suggestions for table settings, cocktail concoctions, music, wine and a complete menu for your party!!!They thought of it all!

I highly suggest getting your subscription today so you don't miss out on any future issues! ... Read more

    Editorial Review

Homeowners looking for design ideas will appreciate the wide selection of styles and treatments offered in House Beautiful. From the latest in simplistic style, new takes on Bauhaus-influenced furniture, lighter approaches to Victorian architecture, and a return to the gaudy patterns of 18th-century French room treatments, House Beautiful tends toward no particular school of design. It offers the best of a wide range of ideas, trusting the readers to make decisions of taste on their own. That said, one theme tends to run throughout. People looking for low-cost designs for small homes with simple architecture are more likely to find a sense of direction in these pages than those people of mightier means looking for the full-treatment solutions. --Brian Trinen ... 3-0 out of 5 stars More Ads Than Anything
I just received my first two issues yesterday. This magazine is page after page of advertisements. The thing that really bugs me about that is - companys run the same advertisements in the same magazines again and again so two issues are virtually the magazine since there are very few articles.

For some reason even the articles in this magazine get lost because they have the same look as their ads. One article was suppose to be tips from over 125 top designers - what it really was - 125 designers listed with addresses and phone #s and a couple of tips on each page of that section.

I'm really disappointed. For a GREAT magazine, try Southern Living. For a REALLY GOOD magazine, try Better Homes and Gardens.

1-0 out of 5 stars Mostly ads
This magazine comes with lots of advertisements - 70% or more. Plus, articles (less than 15 articles in every issue) in the magazines are not very useful.I subscribed the magazine because it is inexpensive and it is rated high by other subscribers. Now I realize I made a mistake.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent!
I just received my first order, and I love it!This magazine covers a broad range of topics and includes designer techniques, current trends, period styles and so much more.It has tons of vibrant pictures to illustrate the articles.I think this magazine would be ideal for someone just starting out in design to gain a basic understanding on a wide range of topics, and also for the experienced designer to keep up with current trends and fill in the gaps with knowledgeable tidbits. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars I love this magazine but...
most of the beautiful gardens I see are in Washington or Oregon or back east somewhere.Having lived in Washington, I do enjoy seeing some of the plants that I am missing here in Colorado, but it would be nice to see a more varied selction of gardens becasue we all can't live in the Pacific Northwest.I have a subscription to Sunset so I guess that will have to suffice, but I do wish BH&G would take that into consideration.

Otherwise, I LOVE this magazine.I used to get several magazines, but this was always my favorite. It is chock full of ideas that we can really use.And I love the photography. What sets BH&G apart is that you can see a hint of life in these beautiful houses.Slippers on the floor, newspaper on the table and often the owners of the home are in the pictures too. They are sometimes blurred from movement which is actually nicer than a posed shot.It helps set the feeling that this home is lived in and is attainable.

I would say get this magazine right away.I would have given it 5 stars except for the whole garden thing.

2-0 out of 5 stars AKA...Better Homes and Advertising
I ordered this magazine recently only to cancel my subscription. There is way too much advertising in the magazine and none of the crafts or projects really enticed me to get creative. It's too bad.Go with Martha Stewart Living or Sunset magazines instead, both high quality.
