Editorial Review

John Huston adapted the first 22 chapters of the Book of Genesis in this mostly silly film that takes us from Creation through Noah's Ark through Abraham's near-sacrifice of son Isaac. This is one of Huston's more personally distant projects, à la Annie or Victory; and for the most part you'd barely know there was even a director involved. On the other hand, Huston does provide some of the only liveliness on screen, playing Noah. --Tom Keogh ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Mankind needs a Savior
I watched the movie and compared it to the first twenty-two chapters of Genesis and found the movie is accurate with the Bible. The movie shows man's helpless condition such as the ark that Noah built which is symbolic of Jesus of Nazareth being the Christian's ark of safety.

4-0 out of 5 stars A good retelling of the stories
John Huston's "The Bible" retells the first 22 chapters of the book of Genesis. It is the story of Adam and Eve, Cain and Able, Noah and his arc, of the Tower of Bable, and of Abraham. The movie has been panned by critics far and wide, and I really do not know why."The Bible" is a good movie, with great stories (with as many stories as there are, no one is more than about 45 minutes, even though it's a three hour movie), good production values (loved the Tower and the Arc was immpressive for the mid 1960s.Yes, the acting was a little over the top, but no more so than in any other of it's time in that era.It stared Ava Gardner, Ursula Andress, Peter O' Toole, Michael Parks, and many more.Goerge C. Scott was the stand out for me as Abraham.Yes, John Huston did do a good job as Noah, and that segment was the best of the bunch.I saw a over reaching theme in "The Bible"; obedience to God.Adam and Eve disobayed God, and they (and all of mankind afterward) suffered for it.In successive generations, man obayed God, and was spared (Noah built the boat, and Abraham almost sacrificed his son), or the disobayed and paid the price (Cain's murder and Lot's wife looking back at Sodom's destruction). If there was any problem I had, it was that in showing what was going on in Sodom and Gomorha, it got a little strange about what was going on.Younger children probably will not understand what is going on, and may ask some awkward questions. But other than that I think "The Bible" is highly under rated.

5-0 out of 5 stars What would it have been like to have been there???
John Huston's The Bible...In The Beginning is wonderful movie that captures on film the emotion and drama of the first books of the Bible. From the beautiful images of Adam and Eve in Eden - including the strange shape/figure of the temptor in the Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil - up to Abraham's life everything here rings true.Yes, he doesn't follow the Bible to the letter, but that is a minor criticism since it was the director's intention to tell the story in a realistic and believable manner. One person here said it was "silly" that the temptor of Adam and Eve wasn't in the form of a serpent/snake.Well, I say that it would have been even "sillier" to see a snake moving its jaws and having human speech coming out of its mouth than the presentation in the movie.John Huston's role as Noah is fantastic, being one of the highlights of the film but pay attention to the people playing his sons and daughter in laws and appreciate how well they were.

Though some here say that George C. Scott over acted in his portait of Abraham, I say that you don't have an appreciation of true drama. In fact, those who call the movie slow fail to capture the same thing. This is a dramatic movie, with little in the way of being "exciting."The Ten Commandments is a good movie, but come on!You can't hardly compare the two.Huston went to great lengths to actually present this as if we were viewing the past and to my mind, he succeeded greatly.Yes, John Huston was an atheist but he shows an understanding and deep-seated appreciation for the people and the material that is hard to find in many people who claim to be all about the Bible. It makes me wonder what kind of movie these people would have made had they had the same resources.John Huston was one of the greats and I simply love this movie. If corny, largely ficticious movies are your cup of tea, then stick with the Ten Commandments but if you want intellegent, fine drama you would do very well to give this movie a watch. ... Editorial Review

King Solomon led a grand life, thus rating this epic movie told intwo parts, averaging 86 minutes apiece. Director Roger Young chronicles the king's rise from the weakling mama's boy of Bathsheba to a ruler known forhis wisdom, international alliances, construction of the Jewish temple, and oh yes, those thousand wives--concubines included. Part 1 spends the firsthour tracing the rivalry of Solomon (Ben Cross) with half-brother Adonijah, before and after the death of their father King David (Max Von Sydow in abrief appearance). It then makes a 10-year leap to dramatize hisfamous method of divining the true mother of a contested infant. In Part 2, the filmmakers embrace the legend that Solomon and the Queen of Sheba (Vivica A. Fox) had a romantic as well as political alliance, suggesting thatthey were the star-crossed loves of each other's life and introducing somesoft-focus nudity. With the queen's departure, Solomon descends intomaterialism and idolatry. The performances are strong and the script, penned by Bradley Winter, artfully weaves in background information to give theviewer helpful historical context. --Kimberly Heinrichs ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Fabulous Bible movies
Now I have to say that 3 of these movies are absolutly great, but the genesis one is a stinker! Esther, Jeremiah and Soloman are all dramatisations of the Biblical stories with great actors who put in brilliant performances. Genesis is a bunch of weird looking guys just walking around with a boring narration. And the narration does not even match what is on screen half the time. If Ed Wood did a Biblical epic it would look like Genesis!

Ok, glad I got that off my chest. Buy the box set, use Genesis for a frisbee!

5-0 out of 5 stars God made him strong, women made him weak
A romanticized but quite accurate account of what is written in I Kings and II Chronicles, this made-for-television film is exceptional and boasts a brilliant international cast and fabulous settings.
Filmed in Quarzazate, Morocco, the landscapes are wonderful, and the buildings and set decoration, in warm amber shades, are a visual delight, enhanced by the cinematography of Raffaele Mertes. The terrific score by Patrick Williams also adds much to the atmosphere.

The section devoted to the Queen of Sheba has been embelished, but Viveca A. Fox is ravishing as the queen, and it makes for great drama.
The emphasis on this part is to show Solomon's destructive tendencies; women were his weakness, and the rationalizations for his behavior his undoing. From Adam to modern history, it's a common story, but in the case of Solomon, what he gave up for his weakness was God's mighty blessing, and the inheritance he would leave his heirs.

Ben Cross ("Chariots of Fire") as this complex character is marvelous, and he is surrounded by a superb supporting cast. Though it's hard to take the nordic air from Max von Sydow (who in 1965 played Jesus in "The Greatest Story Ever Told"), he is nevertheless an aging giant of a man as King David, and France's great Anouk Aimee plays Solomon's mother Bathsheba with vigor, as she holds on to the reins of power with tenacity.
Other notable performances come from David Suchet (who was so good in the 1998 "The Perfect Murder") as Joab, Ivan Kaye as Solomon's half-brother Adonijah, and Richard Dillane as the laborer who ultimately rules ten of the twelve tribes, Jeroboam. Even the smallest parts are believable, which reflects on the excellent direction by Roger Young.
This is a Bible epic well worth owning for repeated viewing; some of it is poetic, some of it action-packed, often inspiring and thought provoking, and always fascinating.

5-0 out of 5 stars Accurate
Overall these are very accurate.I would like to point out, that many biblical scholars believe that Solomon did in fact marry the queen of Sheba. This is based on the history of the nation of Sheba (aka Ethiopia) and although the Bible dosen't explicitly say that they were married, there is nothing in Scripture that would contradict it.In fact the people of the Ethiopian nation were followers of the Jewish faith, that is why the Ethiopian enuch in Acts is reading from the Old Testament.According to the history of that country Solomon and the queen had a son and he sent priests and Levites to train him in the faith. This isn't somthing that the films makers made up.

Esther and Jeremiah are also very accurate, but I thought that Genesis was a little slow.It is mainly narative. After the story of the Creation it could have been acted out. ... Read more

I like this tape series, but the DVD scans are VERY POOR quality. They are grainy and almost blurred. The quality of the VHS tapes are much better. There is no reason for this.

You don't have to be a religious scholar to play Bible Trivia, but you probably won't fare very well if you don't have at least a basic familiarity with the Bible and the many stories it contains. 3-0 out of 5 stars Not quite the challenge i was looking for.
Bible Baffle is a real bungle.I've purchased many bible toys over the years, and I was a little disappointed with this one.Bible Baffle didn't pose the challenge worthy of the good book. There were also someblasphemous wrong answers that even a novice Bible Baffler would beembarassed of.I commend the makers of Bible Baffle for their goodintentions, but next time, get it right. And insted of playing games, wemay want to get down to the point, lose the "Baffle" and justspend time with Bible.

5-0 out of 5 stars And on 8th day God created Bible Baffle
I love games and I love Jesus, and let me tell you I love Bible Baffle more than the two combined. My wife loves Bible Baffle, my kids love it, even my pagan neighbor Wally, who I ask you all to pray for as he is not a soldier of Christ, even he loves Bible Baffle.

It's more than a game, it's a way to test your knowledge about Moses, Jerimiah, Peter and Paul and a whole slew of characters that people the Book.I took this tomy church group the other week and we had a load of fun.My family hasgame night where we get pizza and coke and pray and play till the cows comehome. With Bible Baffle, you can too can do this.

When I get to Heaven, you can bet your bottom dollar that I'll be playing Bible Baffle.

Kids vs. parents. The kids had fun keeping score and "kicking our butts" at this game. The kids were able to answer most of the harder adult questions as well. We didn't get through all the questions, but form what i've seen, it looks like a great product. However we are still checking. 4-0 out of 5 stars Amazing Aids.Text has disappointments.
This book is written by Thomas V. Brisco, currently dean of Logsdon Seminary, run by the "Moderate" faction of the Southern Baptist Convention.

The helps in this book are truly spectactular, including maps on almost every single page, some in relief, as well as pictures of various Biblical Archaeology finds relevant to the narrative.Truly all of the stops were pulled out to produce an outstanding and engaging pictoral reference.

While generally from an evangelical perspective, a couple examples of disappointing elements are:
1.Pages 31-35 give an overall framework for world history that clearly comes from secular scholarship rather than Biblical scholarship. It begins with dates as early as 18,000 BC, (Paleolitic "The Stone Age"), which does not easily fit with the Bible's apparent dates of around 4,000 B.C., or the many ancient calendars.
2. Second, whether intentional or not, the description of these ages reflects a more evolutionary worldview of anthropology than Biblical.People are described as making various discoveries during these pre-historic epochs which lead to civilization. Where is the description of Nimrod's Building of the Tower of Babel, or God's destruction of the world by water in Noah's day?Rather than attempt to harmonize these Biblical events with archaeology, they are glossed over or ignored. In general the ancient history section suffers from this approach accross the board. If you are looking for an attempt at harmonization of Biblical data and secular findings, you will not find it here.
3.The description of the of the ancient civilizations lacks a critical moral dimension.Reading the description of Vespasian and Titus, one would almost think of George Washington, not the men who demolished Jerusalem in one of the most horrible slaughters in history. Why also do we lack any dimension of the atrocious nature of the culture of these civilizations?Without this, we do not see the true impact of the Gospel on human history, and God's role in the civilization of nations.

My recommendation if you own this is to use the charts and maps, and some of the Bible background sections, but skip the ancient history section totally. For those such as homeschoolers from a strongly conservative background, you may want to skip this text altogether.

5-0 out of 5 stars If you haven't got it, get one
Hands down, this is one of the best atlases I have seen of the Ancient Near East. And it presents the majority consensus of scholars today in terms of geographical distributions, routes taken, culture and history.Just reading the text alone is worth the price of admission.I must confess, though, that I am a map junkie and would loved to have seen more maps.As it stands, however, this atlas still makes an outstanding resource.I simply can't think of a better way to describe it.If you're a serious Bible student, or even a not so serious one, you should defiantly get one.Put it on your Christmas list or whatever, but pick up a copy.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent maps and photos
The maps are colorful and detailed. The maps also give the viewer a good sense of the elevation changes from the hill areas to the sea-level areas. Different nations are highlighted in different colors, and viewers can see the empires land borders in the different time periods.

There are many photos of the land and archaeology items.

The book also gives detailed descriptions about what life was like in many of the empires, and how the empires were formed and grew.

If you are trying to decide whether to spend the extra dollars for this book: I believe the extras including the map details, land photos, and commentaries on the living conditions and empire developments make this book a much better value than some of the less expensive books, which I like...but the extra details in this book make it more than worth any difference in price. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Fast and Easy Find
This is a handy little tool to find bible passages or just read the bible in KJV or use to compare the KJV to your favorite bible translation. Enter a scripture reference and it will bring you right to the passage. Or enter a word or a phrase and it will bring up the scrip refer one at a time to view the passage it is in. You can choose the font to small, medium or large to display on the screen.
Easy to use, you don't need a vass amount of knowledge to use this it is very simple.

5-0 out of 5 stars much much better than paper media...
The KJV Bookman card adds the text of the KJV Bible to your bookman device; For example, I use mine with the Webster dictionary.

If you read the Bible often, if you find yourself trying to locate a verse or phrase, or if you're participating in a Bible study, the KJV Bible in Bookman card would be a great choice. The card offers much much more than a book printed on paper:

- You can jump to any book, chapter or verse instantly (there's a simple notation for specifying a location in the Bible).

- You can search for words, phrases, use pattern matching, etc. The card lets you determine the approximate distance between words in a given search, which is a great feature -- this will let you narrow down on even complex searches, so you get be at the chapter and verse within seconds.

- The KJV is annotated with notes to clarify difficult words, etc.

- [THIS IS THE BEST] If you come across a verse you want to remember -- just bookmark is with a single keystroke. You can have several bookmarks, and you can jump to any bookmark with a single click.

And, of course, if you're reading somewhere within the Bible and all of a sudden you need to turn your unit off, you can subsequently turn it back on and it will be show the same screen as before you turned it off. This feature is great when in transit -- you can just shut down the unit, get on or off a bus, and then turn it back on when you want to read some more. Another great feature is that you can choose the size of the letters -- if you have a hard time reading a printed version of the Bible, just select the larger size letters and read away.

I like my unit and use it a lot. Together with a Franklin dictionary, this makes a great combination: Read a book or an article or a novel, see a word you don't know, look it up in the dictionary; See something you suspect is a reference to the Bible, just switch to the KJV and search for it.

2-0 out of 5 stars A Major Disappointment
I was very excited to get this module.I remember having had a franklin electronic bible years ago and I was hoping to have that convenience again.Unfortunately, the interface is abominable. There's no real concordance, and when you try to search, you can only do the Old or New Testament, and the presentation of results is lousy, and it always tries to search its topic index first. What a pain.I'll gladly settle for a software solution that takes up a couple of Meg, because this program is so abysmal. There are free solutions out there drastically better than this [$] module.

Editorial Review

Readers who have either found the Bible to be an intimidating proposition or who are so familiar with it that the words have lost their meaning will discover that Eugene Peterson's The Message: The Bible in Contemporary Language is a welcome way to read and reread one of thebest-loved books of all time. It's directly translated from the Greek and Hebrew texts and is intentionally designed to be a reading Bible rather than a study Bible. Each of the 66 books has an introduction by Peterson, and there are no verse numbers to interrupt the flow of the passages.

The vibrant flavor of the text is evident from the opening verses of the book of Genesis: "First this: God created the Heavens and Earth--all you see; all you don't see. Earth was a soup of nothingness, a bottomless emptiness, an inky blackness."

There's renewed vigor in some of Jesus' most well-known words of the New Testament in John 3: "This is how much God loved the world: He gave his Son, his one and only son. And this is why: so that no one need be destroyed; by believing in him, anyone can have a whole and lasting life. God didn't go to all the trouble of sending his Son merely to point an accusing finger, telling the world how bad it was. He came to help, to put the world right again."

Whether it's the poetry of the Psalms, the thundering tirades of the Old Testament prophets, or the ageless words of Jesus, Peterson breaths new life into timeless passages in thisfresh-voiced paraphrase. --Cindy Crosby ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Good version for devotional reading; not serious Bible study
This version of the Bible is, in my opinion, good only for leisurely reading. The lack of verse numbers allows the reader to continue reading and not lose their train of thought. When it says, "contemporary language," that's exactly what you will get. I would rate the readability of "The Message" on an eighth or ninth grade reading level.

This version is a paraphrase; it only puts forth the idea of what the Scripture passage is conveying. But be cautious: like other paraphrases I have read in the past, the thing to remember is that the translator's beliefs and doctrines are usually interjected into the translation.

I would never recommend "The Message" for serious Bible study; NIV, KJV, or even the English Standard Version are better choices for study. But as far as easy reading, "The Message" is a good choice.

5-0 out of 5 stars Refreshing, enjoyable, uplifting!
I have read the Bible in a few other translations and while I was curious about the Message I never considered it a real "Bible" and since my reading time is limited I stuck with more traditional translations.I have finally began reading it (ok so I read NIV alongside) but either way I find it wonderfully refreshing. Some people complain that he takes too much liberality with his metaphors and although not all of them hit the mark some of them are really great. My biggest complaint about other reviewers is that they have given low ratings just because they don't think it counts as an official "Bible" version. Is that really a fair criteria? Was that the author's aim in writing it?Whatever you believe about that issue shouldn't impact your grade of the text. Its a good read and a helpful guide, and for that its worth 5 stars, no matter what you think about the issue of it being a real Bible!

1-0 out of 5 stars I Couldn't Go Lower Than a 1
The Message is a book of Bible stories by Eugene Peterson. It is NOT a Bible. Unfortunately, people believe that it is. It is actually well beyond a paraphrase. It is, unfortunately, now being quoted everywhere one goes, and in books, sermons, etc. I have read that the author himself, Peterson, is somewhat distressed that people are taking it as an actual Bible translation. I think it wise to heed the author's distress. Make a wise choice of a formal equivalent Bible translation in modern English, such as NKJV, NASB, ESV, HCSB. There you will be getting the Scriptures themselves. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars King James Study Bible - Superb, Classy Publication
I was so pleased with the quality of this Bible when I first ordered, I ordered one for our children and husband, mother, and our closest friends. The Bible is more understandable, more user-friendly without changing the exquisite text to modern language. Each book begins with Authorship information. It is cross-referenced throughout, the print is easy to read, the explanations at the bottom of each page make an old and treasured book a new and vibrant friend. This order is a gift for another friend who wanted nothing more than a Bible like my family members use.Hurray Thomas!Your taste is without fault, your presentation beautiful, your goal reached (The Perfect Bible).Aline Strickland

5-0 out of 5 stars Great bible. No matter what version you prefer
I love this Bible. I have had mine since 1997, and I just ordered one for my girlfriend. I have read and studied with many a Bible, and I have yet to find one as well written and easy to comprehend as this one. Baptist, Methodist, whatever denomination you may be, you can enjoy this Bible. As for those not liking the KJV due to the hard to read language, this is a good one for you as well. Many people get a KJV only to follow along with pastors, and be on the same page. Well, this has a ton of footnotes that help you to understand what certain words are also translated as. This is a great study help for whatever type of study you do. Whether it be in depth study or you just want something to help you better understand the scriptures.

Oh, and to the young man looking to convince me into reading about whether Jesus was pagan or not, I will be praying for you. The Bible speaks of the only unpardonable sin. No, it is not suicide. It is blasphemy against the Holy Ghost. You would do well to read this book. I will make you a deal. You buy me a copy of that book, and I will buy you a copy of this Bible. After you are done reading this and I am done reading that one, we will discuss. Until then, God Bless.

5-0 out of 5 stars This is a pleasure to use often
I do not wish to pontificate on the accuracy or not of this translation. It is a KJV, if that's not what you want why are you here. What you need to know is the quality of this particular edition.
I have been using it now for 5 months and I must say that I have never been unhappy with my purchase. The covers are high quality, as is the binding. The in-text maps are superb and the study guides are comprehensive. the book fits beautifully in the hand and the pages stay open where you want them. It is a pleasure to use. I don't necessarily agree with all of the guides, but that is great because it gives me other perspectives and makes me think harder about what I am reading.
More devout and experienced fellow church goers than I have examined this bible and been most impressed with it.
It is a pleasure to read often and is superb value. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Useful and Well Done
Most who are familiar with the Bible are not familiar at all with the content of the major and minor prophets. The emotional impact of hearing the book of Ezekiel--especially in one sitting, which this set makes not only possible but enjoyable--is rather strong. In fact, it got me kicked out of my church, because the prophets give a sense of the extreme condition in which God finds us, and I applied it to Christendom. In this day of "luke-warmness", that did not go over too well : )Having this set on tape gives us opportunities that otherwise simply would not be there for getting the "sense" of what's in the most-admired and least-read book in the world.I'd advise buying it if you're in doubt.

I've used the prophets as an example. My point is that there's no substitute for getting a whole book (especially the large ones) at one time.I've rated it at four stars because many of the... publishers (I don't know about this edition) to save money, cut the books into different tapes, which makes it nigh unto impossible to keep one's place...How would you like to go fast-forward and rewind for 10 minutes trying to find the beginning of Isaiah?...

5-0 out of 5 stars Good way to spend time in the car
This set of tapes has served me well. I listen to them in the car. I read the Bible every day, and I enjoy being able to listen to the Bible as well. I feel that the Bible is God's word, and God is the only One that can provide security and salvation for mankind. God's plan for the earth is in the Bible. The Bible is more than a history book.
Scourby provides a good voice to listen to. I highly recommend this set of tapes for anyone who enjoys listening to books on tape.

5-0 out of 5 stars Always "Gentle on the Ears"
Scourby's voice was made to read the scriptures! His ability to match the tone of each passage is astounding!Without having to rely on dramatization, he is able to transport you to ancient Babylon, where Daniel is about to be thrown into the lions' den, or to Jerusalem, where 12 year-old Jesus discusses law with the priests and doctors. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars David's emotion is too much
In general I like it except for the voice of David in the Psalms. His emotion is not genuine and seems forced, as if he has a sharp object sticking him while reading.I believe it takes something away from the content, which is beautiful on its own.

5-0 out of 5 stars Pure joy to listen to
This set is amazing! It is truly a pleasure to listen to. Professionally recorded with just the slightest hint of music at appropriate intervals. I look forward listening to each CD. If you are looking for audio that's excellent quality---this is it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Unbelievably powerful!!!!
I have been a Christian for many years, but I have often struggled to get up the intellectual fortitude to actually read the Bible.

Let me tell you, I just bought this, and I started listening to Romans. The words of the Apostle Paul were slammed home to me with overwhelming force! I was teary eyed as the message of grace and love overwhelmed me. I love this! Every serious Christian, who wants the word of God to deeply penetrate their heart, should get this. Words can't express the feeling.

Let me tell you. Hearing the Word of God being read to you is so easy, and so wonderful. The message of the Bible has never been so deeply enforced on my heart. I also listened to the gospel of John, and I literally laughed and cried as I listened to almost the whole book in one shift at work.

Highly recommended. You won't be sorry. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Content -- Difficult Format
As a student of Koine Greek, I find this book to be a valuable resource; I use it daily. However, the print is too small for me, even with the use of a good magnifying glass. As soon as the four-volume edition is available, I will purchase it and sell this book on eBay. Other readers might find the print size tolerable, but my eyes are a bit weak.

2-0 out of 5 stars Disappointed
I ordered this interlinear from Amazon and had it shipped to the UK.From reading the reviews I looked forward to receiving it and using it in study. However when it came the quality of the book was very disappointing. The print quality is very poor which makes the Hebrew difficult to read, and the quality of the book construction itself is also very poor. It seems to be manufactured in the cheapest way possible - what should be a delight to own is rendered frustrating.
I decided that I could not live with it and that it would not really be useable - so I have returned it at the cost of £13!!Had it been more readable I might have kept it despite the poor quality - I shall get separate Hebrew and Greek interlinears I think!

5-0 out of 5 stars An Indespensable Resourse
This is an incredible resource for anyone who wants to understand the Holy Bible. The Hebrew and Greek texts, accompanied by the English translation is amazingly insightful and the Amazon.com price is unnbeatable.I searched high and low for this book or an acceptible substitute, and this is by far the highest quality and best price I could find.Highly recommended!!! ... Editorial Review

Isaac Asimov thinks big; readers of his science fiction works are familiar with his grasp and mastery of scale and how the individual stories unfold within the epic work. In Asimov's Guide to the Bible he utilizes this skill to pare down and untangle the many intertwined threads of biblical history and mythology. He views this guide as a way to illuminate the world of the Bible by incorporating the secular aspects of history, biography, and geography into a deeper understanding. Asimov's Guide to the Bible is not a book to be read in continuum but an indispensable companion to any journey through the Bible. Situating the writers of the various books of the Bible in time and space, Asimov gives its writings context and also explains how that context has morphed with time. While some of his conclusions and "qualified speculations" may challenge certain traditional assumptions (for example, there is no reference in the gospels to Mary Magdalene as a prostitute; rather, she was a madwoman whom Jesus cured by casting out seven demons), his aim is not to tear it apart but to flush out some of its mysteries, give it a context that the average Bible reader can understand, and therefore make it more real. --Jodie Buller ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent refernece material.
Asimov provides an excellent backdrop of historical data and literary criticism in this guide to the Bible. The book is fascinating, addictive, easy to read, and fun. I highly recommend it. As for those religious fanatics who slam it for it's heresies, I say unto you, "wake up!" Faith is for fools. Forget all the myths and magic and use this book to explore WHO wrote the Bible and WHY they wrote the things they wrote. God had nothing to do with it! However, in defense of those Bible thumpers, I will say this: whenever I read a "scholarly" academic book like this and discover that there are no footnotes or bibliography, I get very annoyed. Still, it's a good read.

5-0 out of 5 stars Highly Recommended
Mr. Asimov did a wonderful job of researching the contents of the bible with a completely fresh and unbiased perspective. He dispells the myth and fantasy and provides an accurate context for biblical study.

1-0 out of 5 stars The Peoples of the Bible
I recieved this book for Christmas. It was a pleasant surprise because I am a fan of Asimov's spectacular Robot Series. However, when I opened the book and began to read his hypothesis on books such as Daniel, Matthew, Mark, Luke, John, Acts, Genesis, Exodus, etc... I found his opinions to be rather anti-Semitic. Here are some points I have to make against the book:

1. Asimov regards many prophetic books as pure hogwash. I don't down him for this as some do not believe in prophecy. However, he puts forward the conclusion that Daniel and other books were simply political rhetoric of the time disguised ashistorical record. In other words, Daniel and his associates did not exist. They were concocted by some political activist who had a bone to pick with foreign rulers. I found this highly unlikely because Daniel and other books at the time of Christ were held in the highest regard as books and words given directly from God. You don't take a book that was obviously political, wait fifty years and then give it to the public as the Word of God. Either the Jews were incredibly stupid or they were a nation of liars willing to believe that political activists were really Prophets. If anyone truthfully analyzes the kind of mind that would have to take something like Uncle Tom's Cabin and a hundred years later, find it and believe every word was inspired by God, they will see the absurdity of this claim. These books could not have fooled 99% of the Jewish population for hundreds of years. Nations and people groups just don't believe that kind of stuff if its rigged for so long.

2. Christ is portrayed as a conniving politician. Now some don't believe Jesus was perfect or that he resurrected. Thats fine. But I highly doubt that a man like Jesus could have been the kind of person Asimov makes him out to be and then have his disciples change the records and preach a "Gospel" none of them believed. They died horrible and gruesome deaths for this man. Extra biblical sources confirm it. Why would they run off and "capitalize" on a man they revered and who obviously did not rise from the dead. This is the most unlikely psychological scenario possible. Ask anyone who knows the human psyche and they will tell you how unlikely this is.

3. Once again I return to what Asimov belives is false Jewish history. He maintains that the stories of Jewish wandering in the desert, Sinai, Egypt, etc... is all a bunch of myth scrambled with some real history. This might be concievable if not for three facts. 1. The Jewish people kept an unbelievably close record on these stories. They had scribes who spent years copying them to perfection so that the sort of thing Asimov believes happened DID NOT HAPPEN! 2. If Asimov is correct, these stories have been tainted beyond all hope of recovery. The "spectacular" angles of this history are littered throughout. If you throw out the miraculous you throw out nearly everything. 3. These books do not bear any of the marks of "tampering". Once one scribe decided to tamper with something and things became a free for all, it would have resulted in a mixed bag of stuff no one would have believed. As it stands the Bible is very readable and the style of writing for each book maintains itself throughout that book.

There are hundred of copies of the Bible that have been found by archaelogists. Only two copies of Homer's Iliad were ever recovered and that is considered "Bible", pardon the pun, by many historians. And by the way, all those copies of the Bible are virtually identical. They been analyzed in great detail. Therefore, I would wager that Asimov went into this with what I call "a fixed idea" of what he would find. Too bad he missed the mark.

Read the Robot Series. Forget this book unless you already believe everything Isaac Asimov is going to say. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Worth it's weight in gold
I won't rewrite what other reviewers have said about the text.Having all four excellent translations are wonderful.I consider the KJV a classic, which is sometimes more poetic to read than to actuall understand. Then we've got two of the best modern translations available today, the NIV and NASB, which are very similar to one another but each excel in certain areas. For example the NIV translation of the OT is superb, whilst the NASB translation of the NT is equally wonderful. That doesn't mean the NIV does a dodgy job at the NT or the NASB the OT, just these are the strengths of these two translations.Recommended by many in Bible school. Then we have the new contemporary wonder, the NLT, the New Living Translation.I love it.Actually the only thing that could be better than having the NLT would be having "The Message" translation instead. The contemporary language of the NLT is popular with lots of believers who need to hear and read the words in words that are common to them now, and I think that helps.

Having these scriptures in a 4 column layout is wonderful because it brings new meaning to the texts. We can see what some passages are translated as in some translations and see various parts were translators had differing opinions or expressed concern about their chosen translation of word, which is usually footnoted.Seeing contemporary words explaining our popular belief of what some classic scripture meant is just as wonderful.I recommend this Bible to all my friends. The only thing that could make it better is if it was cross referenced and contained a concordance. But I'm also glad it doesn't contain that as well, as I started the bible is worth its weight in gold - and at 2861 pages, that's alot of weight. If you're considering a comparative bible, this is the one to get.

4-0 out of 5 stars Breadth, not depth
I own both the Life Application NIV (1991) and the NKJV Spirit Filled Life Bible (1991), and I bought Today's Parallel Bible (TPB) to give me additional interpretations in an easy-to-access format. While I appreciate the breadth of comparison the TPB affords me, I'm glad I have my other Bibles with their copious explanatory footnotes, essays, maps, in-depth introductions, cross-references, timelines and concordances; by contrast, the TPB is downright Spartan, containing only the text of Scripture with a few alternate words and phrases noted but no maps, no chapter intros and no study notes.

The paper of the hardcover edition also suffers from weaker opacity and exhibits greater bleed-through (ink showing through the backside of each page) than more expensive Bibles. I suspect this is because the paper had to be very lightweight to fit four translations into less than 3,000 pages. But when you couple this bleed-through with the 8 pt. type on tight leading, you have an extremely dense typographic page, and it's definitely harder to read than most single-translation Bibles.

My recommendation is: don't make this your first or only Bible. First buy a study version of the Bible that has lots of supportive material in it. After that, Today's Parallel Bible will make a worthy supplementary Bible for alternate interpretations to deepen your understanding of Scripture.

5-0 out of 5 stars Go Ahead... Get the "Clunker"
I call this, my FAVORITE bible, the "clunker" because it's FAT! Other than the thickness, the bible is normal in size and will fit in a XL bible case-which you will want to purchase because the binding is glued. (YUK!)Also the print is kind of small but if they made it large, this bible would not be comfortable to carry. I love having these translations next to each other because I was raised on the KJV but I like to compare it with the NIV for clarification. When I am just so tired and want the big basic picture, I read the NLT. When I am feeling super studious I read the NASB side. 95% of the time I am so into reading the bible that I read all four translations!! Get this bible! You won't regret it! ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Not the Best
I gave this bible 2 stars because it is the "official" translation used at Mass in the USA.And that's the only reason. The notes definitely are mild historical/critical in nature with no "life application" (How does this verse, passage, book help me to live for God).It is typical of what we receive in our parish homilies - beige. No fire.Academic.After reading the notes one could wonder why the Bible is such a best seller.

I think it was an honest attempt to make the Bible accessible to more people in the parishes.I think the editors would have done far more good had they used thestyle of the "Life Application Bible" series and just 'tweaked' it for the Catholic audience.

If your studying the BIble academically this version may help you a bit.If you are approaching the Bible to have an encounter with God - and your new to Bible Study - perhaps The Life Application Bible would be of greater service.

4-0 out of 5 stars The recommended Catholic Bible
Most church authorities in America recommend the New American for those wishing to study. As with most Catholic bibles it is translated from the Greek rather than the Hebrew, even in the Old Testament. It also contains five apocryphal books that were removed by Martin Luther when he instituted Protestant reform of the Catholic Church. For a practicing Catholic, or someone who is interested in the bible in general it is a good edition, and comes in different sizes and formats. However, it does not match the poetry of the King James Version, or the Jerusalem Bible. (The Jerusalem Bible is the Catholic poetic Bible from Vatican II.) This Bible is an excellent example of scholarship.

4-0 out of 5 stars The Catholic Bible
I am just merely responding to the person who wrote that the Douhay-Reims Bible is no longer available. It is available and in print and a very good bible to read.I cannot truly rate this book as I have not read it, but wanted to correct the information that the person before me erroneously stated.Thank you. ...
