    Editorial Review

The Pregnancy Book is an excellent all-in-one guide to pregnancy from William and Martha Sears, creators of the concept of "attachment parenting." Each of the book's chapters represents a month, and deals with physical and emotional changes, describes the growth of the fetus, and discusses common concerns. The authors also focus on nutrition, exercise, information and support for home births and birthing centers, traveling while pregnant, how to avoid episiotomy, and so on. The approach is gentle, thorough, and includes more information than some month-by-month guides, which makes The Pregnancy Book an excellent choice for pregnant couples. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Ponderous to read and lacking concrete information
I really didn't like this book.I bought this and what to expect when you are expecting.I prefered the other.I found this lacking in concrete developmental info about the fetus. There were too many "write in questions" and personal anicdotes and not enough facts.I will probably sell this book in my yard sale or send it to goodwill as I really didn't find it helpful at all.

5-0 out of 5 stars The best so far!
Aside from the great information, I love the tone of this book.I'm very touchy about how all things feminine tend to be all things inane/dumbed down/sacharine in this world, and thus I'm picky about how the authors address their audience. This book is the only one I've found that contains comprehensive advice with compassion and thinks you have a brain as well as a uterus. My only wish was that there was more on coping with morning sickness.I'll definately buy more from the Sears.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best Pregnancy Book on the Market
If you're looking for practical and thorough information and guidance to help you through pregnancy, this is the book to get. I very much appreciated that this book, based on the language it uses, assumes that the reader is an intelligent woman who wants to be empowered to make the right choices. I also liked that in the month-by-month breakdowns, it covers all the mixed emotions you may be feeling, offers explanantions why, and then reassures you that it's all perfectly normal. This is such a comprehensive book, it's hard to list all that it covers. Some of the areas it covers: what your body will be going through each trimester; how the baby will be developing each month; how to exercise properly; how to negotiate maternity leave; what federal laws exist to protect you; how to care for your hair and skin; the differences between hospital, birth center and home births, and the pros and cons of each; the difference between seeking care from an OB vs. a midwife -- and all that is covered by the time you're reading about the second trimester!
I have to add that people who believe that pregnancy is some sort of illness or disability will not enjoy this book. Neither will those who just want to get to a hospital, be hooked up to medicine and "get it over with." This book treats pregnancy as the natural, exciting occasion that it is, one that should in no way hinder you from leading an active, healthy life. It also goes to great lengths to empower women to dispel a lot of myths about "alternative" options (such as using midwives or home births) and urges them to be active, informed and vigilant stakeholders in their own pregnancies. ... The Unofficial Guide to Having a Baby

    Editorial Review

Like a good obstetrician, The Unofficial Guide to Having a Baby respects the intelligence of the mother-to-be. This mammoth tome is probably the best reference book on the market, giving nonjudgmental and fairly exhaustive information on such hot-button topics as whether to drink coffee during pregnancy and the relative safety of birth centers. The book lays out as much information as possible and leaves the decision-making to the parents--a surprisingly rare gambit in the bossy world of pregnancy books, which all too often insult the mom-to-be with sweeping dicta unsupported by hard science. Also like a good doctor, the book knows its limits, referring to other sources well and often.

The book's tone can be impersonal, which seems natural considering that it was put together by two authors, a team of editors, and a panel of birth experts including a doctor, a nurse, and a nutritionist. For color commentary, 150 new parents were consulted, but their voices are not the book's strong point, offering such pallid advice as, "A good-quality stroller will see you through all your children, whereas a cheapie will cost you again and again." The book's "Unofficial" moniker seems to refer more to the guide's commitment to laying out all the alternatives than to an irreverent stance. (Those looking for in-the-trenches attitude and tried-and-true advice might turn instead to Vicki Iovine's superb The Girlfriends' Guide to Pregnancy or Ariel Gore's The Hip Mama Survival Guide.) While the book's hesitance to pronounce on emotional topics is largely laudable, in some cases it backfires. In 818 pages, the authors devote just a few paragraphs to single-mother and lesbian pregnancies--though, to be fair, a resource directory is offered. Overall, though, this guide fills a much-needed information gap in the pregnancy book market. ... Read more

I must have gotten 10 pregnancy books to read, and this is the one I found myself going to over and over again.I highly recommend it to everyone!

    3-0 out of 5 stars It's okay.
This book is OK.It does contain useful information but I don't like the way it is organized. For example, the put the section on pregnancy symptoms in the chapter on the second month. That may be when many symptoms begin, but it makes the book hard to reference.Check out "The Pregnancy Bible" instead.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful book...
This really is a fabulous book. You really have to take the cosleeping talk and the things you don't necessarily agree on with a grain of salt.Read around those views if you don't believe in them, because the rest of the book is fabulous.Take to heart the instruction and the positive feedback this book provides.I could have NEVER lived without it, and it is already being borrowed for the 5th time!Everyone who has used it, loves it!
    Good luck!

5-0 out of 5 stars Informative, Motivating and Easy-To-Read
The Breastfeeding Book does a great job of relating why it is so important to breastfeed and teaching techniques of getting started and dealing with any problems. It contains much of the same information as The Womanly Art of Breastfeeding, but in a more organized and easy-to-read format (I recommend The Womanly Art as well, though).I have been nursing my baby with great success, and the information from this book has helped me to give my son the best nutritional start in life. The Sears' emphasis on attachment parenting, while off-putting to some, is actually helpful, because one of the most important (but often overlooked) keys to successful breastfeeding is to feed on cue, day and night, rather than on a schedule (and that won't keep you up all night if your baby sleeps near you- after the first few weeks most babies only need one or two nighttime feedings).Feeding on cue is what maintains your milk supply, and it often makes the difference between moms who succeed at breastfeeding and those who "just couldn't do it".

1-0 out of 5 stars Horrible book
I hated this book. I didn't even read the whole thing because it was boring and I did not like the Sears views on mothers who give their babies formula. I read The Everything Breastfeeding Book and I loved it. I was never bored. My baby was in the NICU and her first night she was given bottles. The second day she was given my pumped milk in bottles and formula because my milk was not all the way in yet. My baby would not latch on when we got home so my mom bought me the Medela nipple shields to use and that is how I breast feed my baby. The Sears would call me a horrible mother because I "didn't try hard enough" but I really did all I could it just didn't work so I made it work with soem help from a nipple shield. ... Read more

    Editorial Review

In their excellent (and hefty) resource guide, The Baby Book, attachment parenting specialists William Sears and Martha Sears have provided new parents with their approach to every aspect of baby care basics, from newborns to toddlers. Attachment parenting is a gentle, reasonable approach to parenting that stresses bonding with your baby, responding to her cues, breastfeeding, "wearing" your baby, and sharing sleep with your child. For those parents who worry about negative effects of this attention, the Sears say, "Spoiling is what happens when you leave something (or some person) alone on the shelf--it spoils." ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful book for our family
As a first time mom, I found this book to be extremely helpful. However, one needs to take into consideration that every family is different and every child is different. Dr. Sears takes a very sensitive, natural approach to child rearing; almost old fashioned if you will. This may not be the style or approach that is appropriate for your families needs. It worked for my family though.

Dr. Sears strongly advocates attachment parenting. By this, the parents become very bonded to their child via using slings to carry them around in, co-sleeping, and being sensitive to the child's needs. My husband and I have done all of this and we have the happiest toddler you could ever imagine. People are constantly commenting on how happy and approachable he is. I am so intoned with my son that I hardly ever need to reprimand him; I just need to give him the look and he knows I mean business. My son never went through separation anxiety or stranger anxiety and I think this is because he gets his fill of us so much he doesn't feel that anxiety.

I feel this book encourages a very sensitive approach towards childrearing that just felt right for my husband and I. Several of the other baby books out there like, `What to expect the first year' just took a very cold and calloused approach in my opinion.

As far as a few of the comments I've read stating that this book is very bias towards the mother, I say that is nonsense. The only thing that this book states that the mother can do that the father can't is breast feed. Every single thing in this book can just as easily be done by the mother as well as the father.

Again, every baby is different and every household has different needs. This book worked perfectly for my son's needs and he's a happy, outgoing, smart toddler today because of these methods.

5-0 out of 5 stars Where's the review for the new edition?
I loved one of the previous editions of this book and used it as the main reference for parenting my baby. Now that Dr. and Mrs. Searses two oldest boys are pediatritians and are co-authors (in fact James is listed first) in the newest edition of this book, I would like to hear about that. Even the editorial review offered by Amazon refers to previous editions, yet they picture and give facts for the newest release. Just an observation I would like to see corrected.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Parenting Produces Healthy Adults
Don't listen to those nonsense reviews below. This book was a lifesaver for me when my child was a newborn. It taught me all the things that should have been passed down throughout the generations, but our culture has thrown out the window. My baby had a dairy sensitvity which made him very high-needs.If it hadn't been for The Baby Book I would have lost my mind and not have bonded with my baby so well.

The book gives great suggestions for how mother and father can bond with the baby. Now wonder Dr. Phil HIGHLY RECOMMENDED this book on his show this year and said keep it handy and refer to it often. If only we had more pediatricians like Dr. Sears................. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars My Favorite Baby Name Book
I must have looked at every single baby name book in the big downtown Seattle library. Though I was initially turned off by the name of the book, I am glad I did not judge this book by its cover. Great names, great descriptions. I even found the name for my baby in this book. And one year later, I still like my baby's name and think I'll keep it!

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent for Writers Who want something different!
I'm an amateur writer, and I LOVE Puffy, Xena, Quentin, Uma! This is an excellent book that will help you come up with great, contemporary and hip names for modern characters. No more, should your contemporary characters be stuck with names like Justin, Lance, and Alex. Instead, your characters could be called: Gage, Ozmon, and Lizbet! Each chapter header comes complete with famous 'real people' who are using the names in question. I love it.

My only peeve with this book, is the low quality paper it is printed on. This paper is a very low grade, and seems only a few grades above toilet paper. Don't let this deter you, however. This is a great book. A must buy.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Totally Excellent baby book for us!(not our parents)
I was sitting down thumbing through the pages of another book and getting NOWHERE.I was having about as much fun as one has trying to BBQ in a rainstrom.

I needed a book that would work for me.I saw the title of this book a decided that it might be worth a good chuckle to atleast look at.This is the book!!!I love the way she has organized it.The little "Crib Notes" are a great eye-opener and a good chuckle. It saves you time, thought and the ever-so-friendly opinions from family and friends when you might be considering naming your child Elvira or Shaq.

Having grown up during the same time as her audience, Joal is in tune with the reader. She doesn't bother listing some names that haven't been used in 100 years just so she can have a book of 25,000+ names. She is smart and gives names that you might actually consider naming your child.

If you are looking to enjoy naming your baby, I highly recommend this book.If you are just looking for a name (like for the pet goldfish) then the book on the checkout stand (you know, the one by the National Enquirer) will work just fine. ... Read more

    Editorial Review

Pregnancy calls upon a woman's physical, mental, and emotional resources like no other life experience. Part of the highly touted Yoga Zone exercise series, this prenatal fitness program gives equal time to meeting all three of these demands and delivers an invigorating yoga routine in the process. Yoga master Alan Finger expertly coaches his wife, Greta (seven months pregnant here)--and viewers--through 35 minutes of instruction. He begins with a tremendously helpful and informative lesson on proper breathing and posture, followed by evenly paced segments of stretching, strengthening and balancing, more stretching, and relaxation. While Greta quietly moves into each pose, Alan gently guides viewers through nearly every sensation and benefit to be achieved by following her lead. His narration is constant but never distracting; rather, his reminders about ideal alignment, complete bodily awareness, and focused breathing add to the overall excellence of this tape. Designed to build a sense of power, peace, and strength in the mother, Postures for Pregnancy also strives to bring love, health, and radiance to the growing child. A solid choice for pregnant yoga students of all skill levels who appreciate detailed guidance. --Liane Thomas ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great for Yoga Zone Lovers!
I have been doing Yoga Zone for over a year now. I stopped when I got pregnant, so I switched over to this DVD. Not only do I love the extra postures that I didn't learn in the other tapes, it still incorporates some that I already know, and didn't know I could do them being pregnant! My only critique is that it sort of rushes through some of the postures, I find I have to pause the DVD to finish. But I practice the moves when I'm not watching, so that's OK.

1-0 out of 5 stars Creepy!
The workout on this DVD may be decent, but I just can't get past the creepy husband/host. The setting is cheap looking and it is poorly filmed. For a much better pregnancy workout, I prefer FitMama.

1-0 out of 5 stars Not recommended
I saw good reviews for this video on another site, so I purchased it for my own pregnancy.I was very unsettled by what was contained on the tape. While Finger's descriptions are pretty clear and he does give a good introductory speech about the problems women can encounter with breathing during the later stages of their pregnancy, he includes a number of postures that are contraindicated past the fourth or fifth month.Downward Dog, Standing Forward Bends and Standing Forward Folds are all inversions (which bring your head beneath your waist). Most ob-gyns are adamant that these postures should not be performed once the pregnancy gets too heavy. So I find Finger's claim that this is a routine that can be safely done at all stages of pregnancy hard to swallow.Clearly, his wife Greta, the model here, was able to perform those postures in her seventh month of pregnancy without any visible side effects. That doesn't mean, however, that the same will hold true for all women.

If you have your heart set on this routine, I advise discussing it with your doctor before you begin. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Horrible, biased book.
I found this book spectacularly unhelpful, and ridiculous in the sense that it actually encourages the reader to think that they know more than their experienced, educated medical providers AFTER ONLY READING THIS BOOK!What a crock. It also shows a clear bias against any medical professional and implies that their motives are simply to make your birth as convenient for them as possible.I am considering throwing this book away, which is something I have NEVER done.Waste of money and paper.

    Editorial Review

For centuries the world over, mothers (and fathers) have been cradling, cooing, and crooning to babies and small children with song. There's scarcely a one of us that cannot recall a particularly gentle song a special someone sang for a wee self--to calm, soothe, and aid slumber. This tender music is to the soul what mother's milk is to the body, and we call it the lullaby. Rooted in age-old tradition, Lullaby: A Collection presents an even dozen lullabies from around the globe. Particularly beguiling are the African "Be Still My Child" by Ladysmith Black Mambazo, the traditional Spanish "A La Nanita Nana" as sung by Tish Hinojosa, and Bobby McFerrin's "Common Thread," which you may recognize as the theme from the American documentary Common Threads: Stories from the Quilt. 3-0 out of 5 stars Wakes her up!
This cd does have some pretty songs on it, but the transition between the songs is sort of jolting. As soon as the first song ends and my daughter is just about to drift off, the second song comes on and wakes her up again! The same goes for the fourth song. She does sleep through the rest of it eventually, but I'm looking for a new cd.

5-0 out of 5 stars There's something magical about this CD...
I definately consider myself more right-brained than left-brained, so understand that it is difficult for me to call this CD magical!HOWEVER, this CD consistently lulls my sleep-challenged 18-month-old daughter to sleep in about 15 minutes, where normally, she would fall asleep in sometimes 2 hours! If you're desperate for salvation from marathon bed times, give this CD a whirl -- it just might work for you too!

4-0 out of 5 stars Very impressive
I must not have read the description very closely, because I expected some "tradional-sounding" lullaby music. This CD to me is a cross between New Age and Lullaby music, and it is very relaxing music.I''ve been listening to it even though baby's not born yet.I imagine she can hear some of it too while I listen to it in the car. ... It's called "the Mozart Effect," the notion that exposing youngsters tothe melodies of the maestro can improve verbal ability, spatial intelligence, creativity, and memory. It's a pretty big leap of faith to understand that effect unless you personally see a toddler react to the stimulation. The Baby Einstein folks have a series of tapes (Baby Einstein, Baby Bach) that add visual stimulation to the bouncy recordings (using vibraphone, Rhodes electric piano, and even a glockenspiel). The melodies are heard against colorful imagery of spinning tops, wave machines, soft baby toys, mobiles, and the like. Several parenting groups and magazines have heralded the tapes for children 1 to 36 months, but the Orwellian aspect of introducing babes in arms to the TV screen may cause many to just pick up the CD. --Doug Thomas ... 1-0 out of 5 stars What a waste of money.
This was my first Baby Einstein purchase....and MY LAST !. I found this DVD to be insulting to the intelligence of infants and toddlers.

This was truly a waste of money !

1-0 out of 5 stars In my opinion, another Baby Einstein flop
A lot of the toys shown in the dvd are the same old toys in the other Baby Einstein videos. This, like most Baby Einstien videos, have the typical toys, spinning things, shiny things and puppets. What really is the purpose of this?No words are spoken in this video. There is no live-action when it comes to the pictures of fruits, vegetables, animals, etc. They are just still pictures/photos.I just can't believe some of these Baby Einstein videos! It seems like they just have an idea or two and try to fill up a half hour tape and make tons of money marketing this to parents who think they are doing their children something wonderful, helpful and educational by purchasing them. And yet people will sing praises about it.I just don't get it.I have watched and reviewed 16 Baby Einstein videos and out of them all there are only 4 that I liked. They are Baby Neptune (water), Baby Newton (shapes), Baby Galileo (sky) and Numbers Nursery (1 - 5).The rest are such a waste of money and time, in my opinion.I couldn't even begin to think of letting my child sit and watch all but the four I think are decent. How can this nonsense be good for their little minds??I have written reveiws for them all.

1-0 out of 5 stars What's wrong with real music?
My 14 month old has been listening to orchestral music since before she was born and loves it!! Why can't they use the real music on these DVD's? I can't stand the cheap synthesizer versions of this music. It is actually more educational for them to listen to the WHOLE ORCHESTRA and become familiar with all those sounds. Besides, they have also removed all the "musical" aspects of the actual music - no dynamics, no emotion. I think someone just decided that it would be more cost-effective to make a cheap synthesizer version of these tunes. I think it is mind-numbing. My daughter taps her feet and nods her head just fine to the orchestral versions of these pieces. (expecially Vivaldi's Four Seasons and the Bach Brandenburg Concertos!!) ... Read more

    Editorial Review

Ruth Yaron cares deeply about what your baby is eating--so much so that her bestselling Super Baby Food is encyclopedic in both scope and size. Ounce for hefty ounce, this manual/cookbook/reference guide is worth its weight in formula, packed as it is with detailed information on homemade baby food, nutritional data, feeding schedules, cooking techniques, recipes, and other invaluable feeding tips. Yaron builds her compelling argument for making baby food at home on the simple premise that food profoundly impacts health, especially when an infant's developing digestive tract is involved. Parents will learn why babies should start out on rice porridge, bananas, avocados, and sweet potatoes before advancing to more difficult-to-digest foods such as wheat cereals and milk products. While Yaron's passionate stance and vegetarian bias may turn off some parents, others will be grateful for her strict attention to potentially harmful additives and chemicals. No matter what their eating philosophy, most parents will appreciate the economy and surprising ease of making baby food at home. This is not gourmet cooking; all you have to do is learn how to boil water and operate a blender. For veggies, simply steam some vegetable chunks and blend. For baby porridge, just grind some whole grains in a blender and boil. It's that simple. And when you're feeding your baby, simple is best. --Sumi Hahn ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars A great resource
I agree- Ignore the negative reviews. As with anything (and as suggested by the author), you should always check with your pediatrician...

That said, I have found this book to be a wonderful resource. It has easy-to-follow tables that say when it is safe to introduce which foods and how much to feed at what age. There are comprehensive guides explaining how to prepare each food, how to best store them, etc.

I work full-time, and have found it very easy to make all of my son's foods, especially using some of the short cuts suggested in this book.Yes, it is wordy, and yes there are parts that could have been left out or scaled back, but I read it cover to cover and learned a lot!

2-0 out of 5 stars Don't Go Crazy
This book can definitely make you nuts. If you are already prone to motherly guilt over not doing "what's right" for your child, I suggest you stay away from this book. Besides, her personal stance on the baby food industry, etc, might override the validity of the facts she presents. The reader might leave the book actually feeling scared that they didn't prepare homemade food. The book is packed to the gills with too much information, and I question the accuracy of some the evidence presented in the book. Be wary also of her personal opinions on particular issues that really don't have any baring on child health and development at all. She makes mention of feeling comfortable to bring concerns to the pediatrician--do that rather than buy into her program wholesale.

Ignore the negative reviews. As with anything, you should probably talk to your pediatrician about when to introduce foods such as nuts (as stated by the author!).I have the 2nd Edition, Revised copy and have found it to be a great guide. I feel it's been a great resource book about what foods to introduce when - whether they need to be cooked or eaten raw.Ruth Yaron does state to avoid nuts if there is a family history of allergies, she also mentions that you should not prepare carrots and spinach (and other veggies containing high levels of nitrates)until your baby is older. ... Editorial Review

Despite denied claims that it's about marijuana, "Puff the Magic Dragon" now ranks as one of the finest children's songs in musical history. It's sung around campfires and in nursery schools to this very day (while still occasionally taking a tug at adults' heartstrings as well). So, it only made sense when Peter, Paul & Mary released this "kiddies" LP in 1969, beginning a trend they've returned to throughout their career. Mary Travers had indeed recently become a "mommy," and the trio celebrate here not only with a new version of their classic tune and the traditional "Mockingbird," but clever children's songs from the likes of Tom Paxton, Gilbert & Sullivan, and Shel Silverstein. --Bill Holdship ... 5-0 out of 5 stars "Played Over & Over Again"
Highly recommend this CD. This is a must own for any mother who has small children.I have a one hour commute every day to work and so I put this music on and my two small children (4 & 1) & I laugh, clap and listen to this all the way to work and again in the evening.I just had to buy "Peter, Paul & Mommy Too" and "Around the Campfire" to add more selection!

5-0 out of 5 stars one of the best CDs for Mommies and babies
Not only can you learn songs to sing to your little one (I love knowing the words to "Hush Little Baby") but you also get to sing along with some very fun (even some happy Gilbert and Sullivan) and lovely original songs.

My son is now two and he knows the words to "Marvelous Little Toy" and "Puff the Magic Dragon" by heart.

5-0 out of 5 stars Absolutely the best childrens' CD!
This album is wonderful, sweet, meaningful and even parents will want to listen to it over and over again. My 2.5 year old loves this cd, as I did when I was a child. She knows a lot of the words and loves singing along.Highly recommended! ... Read more

I have watched my video of this concert over 50 times with my kids and I stll cry at 3 of the songs.I want it on DVD so I can give it to every parent I know. Those of you with the CD are missing 1/2 the joy of this show. The footage of comic storytelling through music, fun instruments, and families hugging and singing together is priceless.I would pay three times as much if I could only find it in DVD format.
