5-0 out of 5 stars Really excellent critique of pop culture
This is a great magazine because it's probably one of the only publications that deals exclusively with the way women are portrayed in pop culture. While it may be easy to dismiss the importance of pop culture on the general public's attitude towards women and what the role of women is or should be, the truth is that it affects our expectations a lot, even if it occurs unconsciously. It is so refreshing to read the various pieces in this magazine and realize that I'm not the only person shouting every time I see an ad on TV with a bumbling, overweight husband who's utterly incapable of doing dishes or making his own sandwich and who is married to a size 2 woman that makes everything from scratch, changes all the diapers and never complains because that is her lifelong dream personified.
The writing in the magazine is generally very witty and insightful, and not at all "man-hating"---I have many male friends who find the articles relevant and funny.I don't agree that this magazine tends toward anger or is geared mainly to lesbians.I think this magazine is meant for anyone (male or female) who is interested in critiquing the role of women in TV, film and music--if the reader happens to be a lesbian, straight or bisexual, I think that's utterly irrelevant.Highly recommended!

5-0 out of 5 stars A Magazine for All Feminists
I'm confused by the reviewer who writes that this magazine is mainly geared towards lesbians. While certainly, part of its mission is to be different from the heterosexist majority, it's not a lesbian magazine so much as a Feminist magazine. The two are not the same.

I find Bitch insightful and aware. Not all articles are angry in tone-- many are celebratory. Many are humorous. A lot of the interviews are wonderful. Th focus on particular pockets of sub-culture is enlightening-- I remember one article on Slash Fan Fiction that amused me, another on girl geniuses in college, and another on being female in the world of record collectors. For a while, one contributor waged an ongoing war with the editor of Jane which I found amusing, though a little odd, but I think that's ended now.
At any rate, I recommend this magazine. It's funny, it's quirky, it's political, and it's impassioned. All pluses.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great magazine
Well written, smart, funny feminist commentary. This magazine has something new and important to say - it's feminism updated for the 21st century. It tackles timely topics with intelligent, insightful and, when appropriate, humorous analysis, and, best of all, does it without annoying and distracting bitterness.Recommended reading for anyone looking for a refreshing look at modern cultural issues concerning women. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent magazine for young women
A good friend of mine gave me a subscription to Bust magazine for Christmas. Up until now, I had never heard of Bust to be perfectly honest. I finally received my first issue of Bust today in the mail. I have to say that this puts Jane magazine to shame. Then again anything would put Jane magazine to shame. As a woman, I felt that I could easily relate to the articles in the magazine (which I can't say the same for the garbage that is passed off for articles in Jane magazine). I especially dug the article "Single Minded" by Diane Mapes" in the February/March issue. I don't know why being single is such a curse to some people. As a single woman, I am content and Diane's article on singlehood was spot on. I also enjoyed the articles on Bjork and especially Tori Amos (my favorite artist). What I also dug about Bust is that fashion takes a backseat to more serious issues like sexism (unlike in Jane). Overall great magazine.

4-0 out of 5 stars Ms., this is not!
I'm not going to say that Bust isn't a decent magazine. And if other feminist publications weren't around, I'd probably be reading it cover to cover. The problem is that they seem to assume that everyone who reads their mag is all do-it-yourself-y and artsy. And that they're actually interested in clothing.I'm not.I still appreciate some of the articles -- for example, the article several months ago on the womanly diagnosis of "hysteria" and this latest issue's article about American women converting to Islam.

If you're a knitter, cool.If you're a sorta-kinda feminist, cool.If you just want to read something that isn't telling you to go out and find a husband, like, yesterday, this is a good mag too.But if you're looking for something that is a little more FEMINIST, pick up Bitch magazine.

2-0 out of 5 stars Too risque!!
I'm always on the look-out for new magazines, and when I found out that the author of one of my favorite books (Stitch N'Bitch) was editor of Bust Magazine, I was intrigued.I went to the newstand and bought the Fall edition.I had almost just went ahead and ordered a subscription, but I'm sure glad I didn't!I hate to sound like a "Midwestern Prude", but this is not the kind of magazine I would like my sons to find in my room one day, especially with all the vibrator ads!I'm sure it's great for younger women, who I feel it's more geared to.There's just not a lot that interests me, besides the recipe for "Mead" and a craft project. It just comes off as being very explicit with very little substance.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent magazine for novices and advanced users alike
When I bought PC World at a store, the cover looked appealing. It had an advice on how to surf the Internet trouble free. So I brought it home and started reading it. I was amazed! I have never read a magazine cover to cover before, but I read this one word for word. This mag is filled with tons of reviews of best software and new gadgets. It also has unbiased articles written in a balanced simple English and technical language on computing in general. Perhaps the best part about the magazine is the CD they include with it. iT is filled with PC World recommended software that will make your life much easier.
IF you never heard of PC World, you don't know what you're missing. Go to the nearest store and ask for the copy. You'll be glad you did

4-0 out of 5 stars Informative, useful
After switching from Mac OS to Windows a few years ago, I needed a PC-oriented magazine to get me well versed in the new vernacular.I took a look at PC Magazine and was disgusted by the number of errors and the dearth of useful content; man, I thought, this is why Mac users laugh at PC guys. Then I picked up PC World at the suggestion of a friend and, wow, within minutes I filled out the subscription card and sent for my subscription.

PC World is good because it's informative and useful. It covers things you want to know as a PC user.It does not slant toward hardware (like the modders-only Maximum PC) or software, and it doesn't waste space telling you why you should buy a Mac G5, which, oddly enough, PC Mag tries to do.PC World is a well-balanced, informational magazine for general PC users. If you want more expert-oriented stuff you might want things like Windows Mag or other more specific magazines, but for general computing, PC World is the best. Each issue is packed with stuff you can use, either in your daily computing or to impress your friends at the new year's party.

5-0 out of 5 stars I enjoy it
I've had a subscription to PC World over the past few years (as a gift) and I love it.The articles are very insightful and relevant.I can always find at least one article in each magazine that helps me with a computer issue I'm having at the time or provides me with reviews on electronic devices that I'm looking to buy. ... Editorial Review

People is the most wildly, consistently successful magazine in history (not to mention the most stolen from lunchrooms) and it's avidly read by half the population of America each year. Why? The people at People know what you want to read: the absolute latest, impossible-to-get dish on celebrity scandals (a $3-million-a-year fact-checking department keeps it real); definitive tribute issues; snappy wrap-ups on the whereabouts of yesterday's stars and the current Most Beautiful People; riveting stories of real folks caught up in the day's biggest news, health, and crime stories; and quick picks and pans on what's up in entertainment. And after years of black-and-white drabness, the mag has fully mastered the art of flashy, full-color photography. --Bob Brandeis ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Inspirational
This magazine has had a huge impact on my life. A lot of people get this magazine because they are looking for lite entertainment or escapism, but if you are looking for inspiration, the pages of People Magazine are loaded with it.

For example, a while back I read a story about Julia Cameron in People which inspired me to investigate what she was all about. That led to my buying "The Artist's Way," then I did the 12 week program, and since then have become a professional house painter making twice the salary that I used to make! All because I read about Julia in PEOPLE!

Another great example is Robert Kyosaki -- I read a story about him which talked about his Rich Dad book, which I immediately went out and DEVOURED in one day. Then I got his tapes, I drove around listening to those tapes in my car for months. Just a few months later, I bought my first house! My own personal American Dream story, just because I was reading People Magazine.

Then I read a story about a new system for increasing passion for couples through sexual mastery. I got a copy of the "New Sex Now" dvd right here on amazon, and after watching it one time, suddenly my lovelife went from average to AMAZING! My girlfriend and I experienced intimacy that we had never known before, and passion that was profound. Now, we're married and living a life of unexpected closeness and fulfillment. I connected with the love of my life because of an article I read in People Magazine.

Now I'm not saying that there's not a lot of fun fluff and mental popcorn for people who want that from a magazine, but if you are looking to improve yourself and get more out of life, People Magazine has plenty of grist for the mill, and on every page provides opportunities for everyone to think and dream bigger. Now that is the mark of a truly awesome magazine!

2-0 out of 5 stars Not enough people
To my mind, a magazine called "People" should have more people in it. Since I began my subscription in 1978, I've uncovered a detectable decline in the number of people appearing in the so called "People" magazine. For the most part, the decline has been pretty steady. 1986, however, was a notable year, as the number of pictures of people in People declined by 64%. This same year saw an increase in dog photos by roughly 3%. It was at this point that I wrote to the editors suggesting a name change for the magazine, or else keep the ratio of dogs to people reasonable. Or else feel my wrath. And by wrath I mean cancelled subscription. Much to my chagrin, they called my bluff and cancelled my subscription for me, so it's fortunate that I had another subscription coming to my house under a pseudonym. What is that pseudonym, you ask? Johnny Depp. And that pseudonym is what has gotten me into the annual People Magazine Christmas party every year since. And each year, as I stand on my hind legs next to the punchbowl, talking with a gorgeous starlet, I laugh and laugh, because while the editors of the magazine are all cornered by drunken John Lovitz, I am enjoying every dog and man's dream, and it feels as though the night will never end.

5-0 out of 5 stars Love People magazine
People is the best magazine that I have ever read. I subscribe to it and it comes on time every week, never damaged, like other magazines. I like the stories, pictures and the crossword puzzles. I also like the fact that it's not all about Hollywood. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Edited by 1000 Cooks...and Has No Ads!
I first came across Taste of Home Magazine about 10 years ago. Some friends of mine were quite the experimental couple who loved to try out new recipes. As the recipient of tasty appetizers, dips, and desserts, I asked them for the recipes. It was then that they shared this magazine with me...and I've been a subscriber ever since!

Each magazine features several special features, as well as mainstay departments such as Potluck Pleasers, My Mom's Best Meal, Getting in the Theme of Things, and Super Snacks and Appetizers. Arguably the best part of this magazine is their clip-and-keep section of recipes which feature color photos of the dish. Just cut out the recipe, and ouila! it's ready for your recipe box.

Other information-packed sections include Ask Our Food Editor, Touring Country Kitchens, Ted's Toothpick Contest, Lively Leftovers, and more. Each issue also features a recipe contest to win cold, hard cash.

Some of the great recipes that are in the most recent issue include:

    Swiss-Stuffed Porkchops
    Open-Faced Turkey Tacos
    Spinach Shrimp Fettuccine
    Coffee 'n' Cream Brownies
    Cucumber Potato Salad
    Asparagus Chicken Crepes
    Hearty Jambalaya
    Barvarian Strawberry Pie

and many more. Besides being tasty dishes, one of the great things about the recipes in Taste of Home is that they don't call for some exotic ingredients. Rather, they feature ingredients that can be found in any department store...even if you live in an out-of-the-way rural area!

Some of the recipes aren't exactly "quick", which is why I give it four stars. There are certainly quite a few quick and easy recipes, but there are also some that take quite a bit of prep work. If you're looking for a magazine with mostly quick recipes, try their sister publication, Quick Cooking (I subscribe to that one, as well...and actually like it better.)

Taste of Home has NO ads (amazing!), so it's nice that the magazine is chock full of recipes and information--not fillers and ads. This magazine also is very "country", so if you're looking for something trendy and cosmopolitan, this mag may not be for you. But if you like down-home country cookin', you'll likely love this magazine.

5-0 out of 5 stars Home Cooking with Creative Flair
Imagine making a Beehive Cake or a Honey-Citrus Iced Tea. When looking through this magazine you need a good cup of tea and a pair of scissors. You will be cutting out a lot of recipes! In fact, I'm sitting here cutting out recipes in between typing. There are 16 pages of recipes in a "card" format.

The Favorite Meal section and Cooking for One or Two is always of interest. It shows you how to put an entire meal together and all the recipes are included.

There is also a section where you can view enviable country kitchens. Then you can learn how to make ordinary foods extraordinary. Add curry powder to chicken salad or add brewed coffee to cookie dough.

The "Men Who Run the Range" section is a series featuring men who love to cook and then you can also find out what people are eating in various states across the country. These are ideas and recipes from real cooks across America.

One time I looked in the "Does Anyone Have...?" section and found a note about a woman who was looking for specific items. After sending her a small box, she then reciprocated and sent me the most beautiful framed pressed flowers. It is a fun section where you can read about recipes people are looking for and if you have the recipe, there is an address where you can mail the item. I recently learned how to make rosemary crackers and someone is looking for a recipe for various crackers.

This magazine also has info on cooking schools all over the country. You could also be a Field Editor and share your recipes, cooking tips and other ideas with the home-office staff. You could literally end up in this magazine!

Some of the delicious recipes I've been clipping from this magazine include:

    Grilled Sirloin Steak
    Crispy Fried Chicken
    Herbed Seafood Skewers
    Chicken with Rosemary
    Vegetable Cheese Tortellini
    Grilled Turkey Burgers
    Beehive Cake
    Honey Citrus Iced Tea

Tonight I made a chicken dish with homemade stuffing and a mushroom gravy that my husband really loved. I think this magazine inspires me to cook more and I have never read this magazine without tearing out pages galore. Now I'm dreaming about the Pear Crisp with Lemon Sauce and the Raspberry Cheesecake Pie.

I have received this magazine from it's start and have always found it to be full of great recipies, however, the company that produces this magazine has horrible customer service.I have battled with them for over a year about a billing mistake on their part and they still have yet to make it right.I have cancelled all subscriptions with them and refuse to do business with them any longer. If you subscribe be very cautious about ordering any books from them! ...
