5-0 out of 5 stars Great Magazine
I really enjoyed my subscription to Parents Magazine while I was pregnant and during the first year of our daughter life. I liked the product recalls...found it very helpful. I now buy it at the store when I am wanting a magazine. There is things I think they should change with this magazine but overall it is worth buying.
Great gift if you know a new mommy that isn't already getting this in the mail.

3-0 out of 5 stars Should change its name to 'Mothers'
As is true of most of the mainstream parenting magazines, I find the articles almost exclusively geared toward mothers, rather than (both) parents -- only rarely to fathers. Perhaps this is a little less true of this pub. than of its chief competitor, "Parenting."The voice of the articles often specifically addresses the mother/female half of the parenting team and the features with beauty tips in the "taking care of yourself" vain are pure fluff, more appropriate to 'Vogue' or 'Self' and of course, again, never addressing the male half of the parent team.

I agree with other reviewers who have noted that the general tone of many of the articles seem to be mostly aimed at upper income, traditional families. While we can often find something of interest/use in this mag. As'older' (over 40) parents of a 3-yr. old transculturally adopted daughter, this targetting is makes the magazine less useful than it could be. As the 'father' half of the team, I find it even less helpful, although, if I had to choose between this pub. and "Parenting" I would opt. for this one.

I guess the marketeers believe that fathers don't read magazines about parenting, and saddly maybe this is mostly true, but I would love to see a magazine that is truely devoted to parenthood -- all types and all both halves. This ain't it.

4-0 out of 5 stars Raising Kids in the Modern World
Parents magazine is a very good publication about raising kids to be happy, healthy adults. It offers some good advice about the task of parenthood, illustrating the hard work and rewards that go hand in hand if parents perform their role in the best possible manner.

I like this magazine as a whole, but there are a few things that potential readers need to know about before they pick up a copy to read. First of all, the articles in Parents magazine deal mostly with younger children, below twelve years of age. You won't find much of value in this magazine if you have teenagers. It is intended more for families with youngsters.

Another thing about this magazine that makes it less practical than it otherwise would be is the suggestions for family activities. The ideas presented here are all pretty good, but the problem is that the majority of them involve outlays of cash and/or time that are unrealistic for most families. I can agree, for example, that adding a game room would make a nice addition to one's house and would add tremendously to a family's time spent together. But how many among us can afford a home addition? Parents magazine talks about activities and enhancements like this in an unrealistic way, making them seem much simpler and easier to implement than they really are.

Aside from distractions like that, however, Parents is a very good magazine to read. It's one of the longest magazines you can buy, with 200 to 300 pages per issue. Add to that the low subscription price, a few pages of coupons, and the generally sound parental advice and you have all the makings of a good magazine for young families.

    Editorial Review

What does family fun mean to you? Crafts? Recipes? Party ideas? Travel tips? FamilyFun magazine dishes up these and more boredom-defying activities in over 180 splashy, colorful pages. Geared toward parents with young children, this energetic magazine promises to enrich the lives of families. Offering a "we've been there, we know" sort of comfort to parents, folksyfirst-person articles let parents know they're not alone. A sense of community is expanded further in the "My Great Idea" section--culled from readers' letters--that suggests kid-tested ideas for everything from summer games to rainy-day projects. Homeschoolers will find plenty to ponder as well--a winter issue, for example, describes how a snowflake takes shape, then suggests a paper snowflake-making project. Reviews of digital games, books, videos, and DVDs, written by industry experts, help parents feel up to the minute. FamilyFun is positively inspirational to parents who want to shake up the routine and keep the magic in a family. --Karin Snelson ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The most for your money in a family magazine!
I have been a subscriber to Family Fun for 4+ years and I have always enjoyed the magazine.I don't remember ever being disappointed in an issue.

I usually will read a magazine once just for entertainment value and then go back later and sort out the articles & ideas I want to keep on file for future reference. In most magazines this equates to a few pages to hang on to at the most. With Family Fun I always end up with a huge stack of ideas that I want to hang on to.What is even better is that these are tips and bits of information that I actually use and apply in our everyday lives.Practical, useful and fun are all words I would use to describe this publication.

    My favorite features include:
"My great idea" - submitted by readers
"Family Almanac" - seasonal activities and resources
and the travel ideas. We have discovered many great places that our on our list to visit someday and we have even been able to add some wonderful and educational fun to trips we have already had planned.

Some reviews have complained about the magazine being owned by Disney.I'm not sure why that is such a problem, but I do realize some people don't like Disney. The truth is that some major corporation owns just about everything major magazine out there anyway. At least the Disney company has helped Family Fun gain a bigger audience and provided a fantastic web site as a resource companion to the magazine.I don't find that Disney is overly promoted (a rarity in the world of Disney I know!) in this magazine. There are plenty of reviews and references to very non-Disney products such as the Harry Potter series, Shrek movies, and hundreds of travel ideas that have nothing to do with anything related to a Disney enterprise.

This magazine has definitely earned the 5 star rating.

5-0 out of 5 stars For parents, teachers or anyone who works with children!
I give Family Fun magazine 10 Stars!!! I fell in love with this magazine at least 10 years ago, way before it was owned by Disney.

Every month there are terrific art projects, children's cooking with pictures and each step is broken down that even a pre-teen wouldn't be insulted to cook from. There are terrific holiday ideas, different, but fairly easy Halloween costumes to make, indoor fun & games, ideas from other readers, even some articles for the adults, great family places to visit, reviews on books, music, movies and games geared for Children!

If you've missed seeing this magazine and fall in love with it, Family Fun has books that have sorta the best of the best like FamilyFun Cookbooks, Parties, Birthday Cakes (their cakes rock), Boredom Busters to name a few!

Perfect gift for your child's Kindergarten, 1st, 2nd or 3rd grade teachers, for any family with children or anyone who works with and loves children!

5-0 out of 5 stars Not Only for Those With Kids!
I was introduced to this magazine by a family friend who does have kids. However, I do not have any children and I love it!It gives me great recepie, craft and home ideas.I can use them in my own home or for my students or my Brownie Troop! ... Read more

We had this for my granddaughter when she was little and we sent in one of her pictures, here it is a year and a half later and they are going to use it!If any of you get this it will be in the March April issue.Would you consider sending me that page after your child is through with that issue?I can't find a place where I can order just a couple copies of that issue. If you find an address to send for back issues would you please email me.cindyleet@gci.net

4-0 out of 5 stars Kid's don't fake it. You know if they like it.
My four year old grand daughter likes to spend time with books and magazines. She choses this one frequently from the pile available to her.
Her favorite [...] mothergoosecaboose and this magazine gives it a run for the money.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good short stories and activities
This magazine is expensive, but each issue contains several stories, activities like mazes, finding hidden items, and basic colors and counting. My son does not watch TV (his choice), but he likes the characters in this magazine, who are all friendly and likable to him.

I also recommend subscribing to the mediocre Parenting magazine, only because it includes an issue of Sesame Street magazine with every subscription-issue. Sesame Street magazine is better than Preschool Playroom because it has a much broader selection of information (includes animals, geography, and multi-cultural lessons) presented in a style that preschoolers enjoy. Just leave the Parenting magazine in the waiting room at the pediatrician's office. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars great recipes
Family Circle has great recipes compared to other magazines.Right now, I have subscriptions to Southern Living and Everyday Food.I also frequently purchase Real Simple, and I have to say that compared to these other publications, Family Circle is kitchen-proof.Several recipes from this magazine I have added to my repetoire, one of which is a cake for which I get frequent requests from my husband.

The articles are usually pretty ridiculous (particularly rated-PG ones about how to spice up your love-life), although there occasionally will be something useful, like about some rare disease you've never heard of caused by your hot water heater or something. However, I actually had to cancel my subscription after September 11th because the level of patriotic gore became untenable.Every page of the frigging magazine was red-white-and-blue, and I guarantee that you will never find a single article about, for example, "How to Deal With Domestic Violence when Your Husband Comes Home from Iraq and Starts Drinking Heavily" or "How to Get a Tombstone for Your Soldier AT COST and Save Your Family a Bundle!!!!"

I still like the recipes, but I am still boycotting the magazine.Fortunately, old copies are easy enough to pick up at garage sales and Goodwill.

5-0 out of 5 stars Lots of Good Stuff Inside
Family Circle is aimed at female readers with articles focusing on topics like parenting, marriage, etiquette and beauty and fashion. Each issue also features an article on Women who make a Difference. There is also a Health Report article, fitness articles, and diet tips, including menus and recipes. There are lots of recipes, in fact, including pull out recipe cards that can be filed in your recipe box. There are also articles on gardening, decorating ideas, and craft ideas. A reader's tip column pays readers $50, if their tips are used.

Family Circle is a good magazine for all women.

3-0 out of 5 stars Home Economics 101
Family Circle is a fairly good magazine that features articles on family life, raising kids, travel, personal finance, home improvements, and more. It is primarily directed at the female population, with articles that emphasize the roles that mother's play in household management.

The articles that feature recipes and family life form the bulk of the stories in Family Circle. Less common are the articles involving personal finance and other topics. These financial articles are a nice addition, and I was surprised when I first saw them in this magazine. But potential readers should be forewarned that these articles are not very in- depth. They only skim the surface of finance, talking about such simple matters as balancing a checkbook, refinancing a home, and paying off credit card debt. You aren't going to find a story about purchasing stock options or selecting tech stocks. Family Circle keeps it simple and covers only those financial topics that are relevant to taking care of the home and daily living.

Family Circle is published 15 times per year, with a low subscription cost. It may not cover topics as thoroughly as other, more specific magazines and it can sometimes get a little repetitive from month to month. But it's a pretty good magazine overall, with tips on cooking, cleaning, fashion, raising kids, and taking care of one's home. ... Read more

    4-0 out of 5 stars Refreshing...finally!
I have two toddlers under the age of 3 and have subscribed to Parents since I was pregnant the first time. I then added on Parenting Magazine. This past year I felt really burned out on "parenting magazines," growing tired of the colorful baby toy Top 10's, the schmaltzy articles, etc.. I felt it was all surface material; something to thumb through but never really "get" anything out of. I was especially disappointed with Parenting and actually cancelled my subscription before the year was out because I hated the obligation to look through it when it came each month. I felt it was a waste of time and that it was obvious when they had a blank area on a page to fill, because what they filled it with was extremely boring and seemed like "last minute" filler. I finally looked into Child Magazine after initially brushing it off as a glorified clothing catalog. I have been VERY happy with each issue, saving them for when I really have time to READ. The articles don't speak down to you as a parent, understanding that even though you have a child you might be interested in reading something beyond "fun bath toys for your little one" and might instead enjoy something of substance. I would highly recommend this magazine as a change of pace, especially if you are tired of the other parenting magazines!!

4-0 out of 5 stars The Quality of the Writing Trumps Other Parenting Mags
I rarely write reviews but couldn't believe what I read by the other reviewers, most of whom focused on how ritzy the lifestyles of the parents depicted in the articles are, how "expensive" the clothes are, how pretty the moms (models) are, etc...This is a magazine. Don't we expect some kind of facade?

Other "Parenting" magazines may APPEAR to be more about and for "real" parents, but this is no more than their chosen tactic. As with any publication whose foundational goal is to sell more advertising, they wouldn't be doing this unless they believed it was going to work. They are selling a certain "lifestyle" just like CHILD magazine is.If it's more in accordance with yours, fine. But why trash another just because it's different?

CHILD Magazine isn't perfect. But at least it doesn't pander. Does anyone really want to see what Target's latest attempt at toddler fashion is when they open a magazine? I'd rather just check for myself the next time I'm out buying diapers.

If you value solid writing above all else in a magazine, then CHILD Magazine is for you. (And whether you can afford that $90 pair of toddler shorts on page 28 won't be such an issue.)

1-0 out of 5 stars Great only if you want to spend tons of money
I subscribe to Parents, Parenting and Child magazine and will renew all but the one to Child. It's full of ridiculous fashion spreads (like I'm going to spend $50 on a t-shirt for my 15-month old), useless travel information and near-advertising features on the newest, most expensive items I 'need' for my child. The actual articles are no better or worse than what's in the other mags, and I don't find there's nearly as much information in the magazine as in the others.

As other reviewers have said, it is beautiful. However, it's thoroughly impractical unless you're one of those people who plan to shop at Neiman's for your child...not that there's anything wrong with that. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Sometimes something glitters in the dust
You will go through issue after issue, wondering if it contains anything beyond `cutesy' photo ops and rehashed articles of things you already knew, and then suddenly they will come up with a gem of an article that will actually add to your parenting portfolio, or knowledge.

5-0 out of 5 stars Thanks American Baby!
I can't think of any other company, especially children or parenting magazines that even offers a free subscription like American Baby does although I don't mind paying for mine.I love the articles and the advertising, and I was blessed enough to have my little girl's face in the May issue this year 2004!I haven't seen the actual copy yet so I am extremely excited to get my issue from the mail box!
    Keep up the good work!

1-0 out of 5 stars Not Worth It
This was so not worth it. My parents were able to scrape enough money together to surprise me with a subscription to this when I was pregnant with my first child. SInce I didn't know this, I had applied for the free subscription. Well, lets just say that between both subscriptions I didn't even recieve all of the issues. And the few that I did recieve, I was dissapointed with. There were several wonderful articles but most of it was just fluff. Every time there were baby gear recommendations, it was almost always from the more expensive end of the line. They need to do reviews on everything available so we can make better informed choices. It's as if they assume that all women have thousands of dollars to spend when they start having their children. I had $500 and I was lucky to have that. When there were coupons, it was always for stuff that I didn't or couldn't use. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Helped Foster My Love and Respect for Animals
    (...)

Living in the country as I did, I saw plenty wild animals in my backyard (squirrels, raccoons, possums..), but armed with Ranger Rick, I was able to appreciate and see them up close with out being bit, scratched, mauled, or hauled off to the emergency room for rabies shots!

Besides the wonderful animal features, there were projects, games, and activities to keep me and my brother busy. The concepts put forth in each issue emphasized recycling, kindness to animals, and conservation -- values and beliefs I carry with me almost 30 years after the fact.

So whether you live on a farm, the suburbs, or the city, Ranger Rick would be a wonderful gift for your child. It will help foster a life long love and respect for animals, as well as reinforce key values (conservation, recycling, etc.).A few things have changed over the past 30 years, but Ranger Rick is still consistantly a good magazine.

If you find the sex-and-the-single-girl style of Cosmo less relevant to your current how-do-I-juggle-kids-husband-job-sanity stage of life, then congratulations, you've graduated to Redbook. Don't worry, this isn't your mother's magazine; Redbook is loaded with steamy Cosmo-like articles (in other words, sex, sex, sex), only now they're covered under "Love and Marriage" and deal with helping you keep things together at home (including a monthly Q&A with John Gray called "Passionate Monogamy"). From here, Redbook branches out, with sections on kids and parenting, food, health and fitness, beauty, fashion, celebrity profiles, short fiction, book excerpts, and making time for yourself. --Jenny Brown ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Value!Filled with useable info.
I really like this magazine, even if its a woman's magazine.Often I find these types of magazines filled with advertisements and articles that never seem to fit a real persons every day life. This magazine features a nice cross section of information on fashion, decorating, cooking, and relationships.I always find something interesting to read in here.

    4-0 out of 5 stars Well-rounded!
I really like the fact that the publishers really listen to their readers.Every year (or is it twice a year?) there is a survey included in the magazine for people to give their opinions about articles they enjoy and those they would rather do without.

I've been reading this for the past 2 years at my local bookstore (and finally subscribed earlier this year).I've seen an improvement not only in the magazine's layout, but in the content as well.I really like how there are "sections" on personal well-being, fashion, motherhood, etc.Since I'm not a parent (yet), I can easily skip over the motherhood section.Because of the layout, it's not hard to flip through and find what I'm looking for.

3-0 out of 5 stars Not Mao's Vision!
I subscribed to Redbook to rekindle memories of my glory days. In 1968, at the gates of Berkeley's Sproul Plaza, my fellow White Panthers and I sold copies of Mao's little Redbook.Boy, have times changed!!In the sixties, Mao prescribed hunger and hard work for The People... making them too worn out to question what is best for them -- The Revolution!Today's Redbook wears The People out with capitalist trivia!!Alas, the end result of Mao's Redbook and the current version are similar:The People are led to conformity and full acceptance of their all-knowing leader. But in this reader's humble opinion, Mao's vision reaches further than Dr. Phil or Dr. Atkins!I call upon Redbook to return to its original vision!!Power to the People!!!By the way, the jello salad recipe (May, page 74) is to die for!.... I recommend using the *small* marshmallows:-)Enjoy! ... Read more
