    Editorial Review

Focused on "healthy living" rather than chronic dieting, Cooking Light is geared towards both the veteran cook who wants to "lighten up" and the novice determined to give up prepackaged "diet" meals. Each issue covers a different theme, from "superfast suppers" to "pretty, easy fruit pies," and includes features on food-related health trends; fast, healthy meals; and original recipes from readers. We especially like it when the editors rescue a reader's favorite, albeit fatty, recipe, giving it a healthy makeover, showing before-and-after stats on calories, fat, and cholesterol. The message is clear: you don't have to sacrifice the foods you love once you learn to "eat smart." --Daphne Durham ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Light on the cooking
I just started a subscription to this magazine and when I got my first issue I thought they had sent me the wrong magazine! There were no recipes or cooking articles in the first half of the magazine. There were fitness articles, organizing hints, and style sections, but no cooking until the second half of the magazine. There were a lot of ads- but that I can live with.I was just disappointed not to have more sections that are actually about cooking. The recipes and cooking sections in the second half of the magazine were really interesting and had lots of ideas I'd like to try.I just wish that the whole magazine could be about cooking and recipes rather than trying to be something else. That said, I think the cooking sections are worth the hassle of digging through the other articles- lots of ideas and mostly easy to prepare.

2-0 out of 5 stars Mostly advertising
I just received my first issue and by the time I got to the middle of the magazine there was only 1-2 recipes.I was very disappointed.I was interested in mainly recipes not advertising or articles.

5-0 out of 5 stars A great read
Being a mother of teenagers it is hard to come up with good recipes that can win-out over fast food in their mind. This magazine gives great healthy options that even picky eaters enjoy. ... Read more

The South Beach Diet: The Delicious, Doctor-Designed, Foolproof Plan for Fast and Healthy Weight Loss

    Editorial Review

The verdict is in: those simple carbs we've been living on are killing us. For good health, we've got to get our blood sugar under control and stop the incessant cravings. Or so says Dr. Arthur Agatston, author of The South Beach Diet. The first half of the book details the science behind the diet. Most of the explanations revolve around why things you thought were healthy—-orange juice, wheat toast, carrots—-are actually evil. To avoid blood sugar surges, Agatston created a modified carbohydrate plan, recommending plenty of high-fiber foods, lean proteins, and healthy fats, while cutting bread, rice, pastas, and fruits. Major differences from other diets include a lack of concern over portion size and a serious indifference to exercise. Feeling full while on a diet is a beautiful thing, but it seems odd that a cardiologist buries his exercise recommendations in a solitary sentence.

The last half of the book covers his three-stage plan; daily diets are mixed with recipes, some of which are from South Beach restaurant chefs. The most restrictive period lasts just two weeks, enough time to stabilize your urges and lose a few pounds; stage two adds fruits and a handful of other carbs, while stage three is meant to last the remainder of your life, with occasional lapses for white bread or birthday cake. While the diet is sound, the book could be better organized. The first half mixes scientific study with anecdote in a seemingly random way, while the mix of meal plans and recipes can be confusing. Still, the recipes are varied and tasty, and you'll never feel deprived, unless you currently happen to live by bread alone. --Jill Lightner ... Read more

this book sucked. diets! i mean why dont you just eat healthy and excercise. if you bought this book i think it was a waste of your money.

4-0 out of 5 stars To lose weight, just head South.
This is a diet book whose plan is to get you to lose weight by limiting your carbohydrates- essentially another low-carbohydrate diet. It has 3 phases where your carbohydrates are severely restricted at first, and then re-introduced. These kinds of diets will definitely help you lose weight in the short run, but in the long run, they fare just as well as any regular calorie restricted diet. An easy read, I give it 4 stars. Readers interested in other weight loss books might also want to check out "The No-Beach, No-Zone, No-Nonsense Weight Loss Plan" to see what the published research has to say about losing weight. Happy reading!

4-0 out of 5 stars New Alternative
There must be something about The South Beach Diet that makes it so popular. However, I think that we in North America, while chasing the perfect body, forgot about what really matters - the perfect health.

I am a creature that trusts everybody, but not without a dose of skepticism. Therefore I always make a point of trying new approaches on my own before expressing any opinion. After going trough The South Beach Diet I realized that Agatston is just updated version of old Atkins. Although these two low carb approaches certainly bring good results from the point of loosing weight, I am not really convinced that this is what one need to focus on. First of all, it is a hard diet to follow, and sooner or later one is bound to break some of the rules. Secondly, I find that in a healthy diet we need carbs the same way as we need fats and proteins.

Out of all approaches to losing weight, the one that makes most sense to me is presented by Dr. Tombak in his book "Can We Live 150 Years?" Using simple language he talks abut all aspect of health and longevity. Following some simple food combination guidelines, and not letting your stomach direct your actions are the basic things that one needs to do. As Dr. Tombak advises: "Eat to live instead of living to eat!"

The interesting thing is that once I started following Dr. Tombak's guidelines I lost about 10 pounds within six to seven weeks without ever focusing on losing weight. I was more concerned about proper nutrition and healthy life style more than anything else. Loosing weight was just a pleasant byproduct of my new lifestyle.

But of course that is not all. It turns out that improper diet is only one of a few causes of obesity for many people. Mr. Tombak names other, less known causes of the problem and he also suggests the ways of dealing with them.

4-0 out of 5 stars Worthwhile for diet and nutrition newbies
WW magazine is one of the best for those wanting sound and sensible advice on adopting a healhty lifestyle. The articles are well written and accessible, though at times a bit on the basic side. It's perfect for the clueless or confused and frustrated with all the diet hoopla.

My only complaint is that I do wonder at times if the recipes are actually tested before publication.Sometimes, the technique used is inappropriate and renders an inedible product to my taste.I must admit I'm a foodie, and love to cook and bake, and am probably pickier than most.Be forewarned, and read through recipes before proceeding is my suggestion. You may choose to execute the recipes differently to get a better texture or alter the spices and herbs to add more flavor.

I have lost 43 pounds with the WW meetings program, and have found the magazine helpful, motivational, and inspiring.I'd encourage a subscription for anyone who really wants to learn to change their lifestyle. The magazine will teach you how to do it right on many fronts, from fitness to food shopping to dealing with special ocassions, family and friends, work, you name it.Weight Watchers has a strategy for adapting your new behaviors to every situation. It's all addressed here!

5-0 out of 5 stars Useful for everyone

This months issue on vacations will be really useful for you in thinking about this summer. Even if you are not on wieght watchers and are interested in health living this magazine will be helpful to you.

5-0 out of 5 stars Get WW, If Only for the Receipes
I lost 34 pounds on Weight Watchers and part of that was because of their phenomenal publication. My wife and enjoy every issue, filled with new research, helpful facts, loads of coupons and those recipes.

My wife enjoys cooking from the recipes. What I love about WW is that you can live a normal life and eat the things you want. You'll be surprised at how many calories you can cut out of a regular dish just by substituting certan ingredients. And you don't even taste the difference! Sometimes its even better.

If you're trying to lose weight through WW, you really should have the magazine. It's inexpensive and it will help you along the way. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Is it for you?
If you're into the whole low carb thing (which is fading fast), then this book will help you out a lot. It's chock full of recipes and the author has laid them all out pretty well so you can find things very easily. Readers interested in losing weight might also enjoy "The No-Beach, No-Zone, No-Nonsense Weight Loss Plan, A Pocket Guide To What Works."

5-0 out of 5 stars Very good cook book
This book is great! It has really good recipes that are fairly easy, it also has desserts, salad dressings, salads and really good marinades that are all low carb and healthy! Most of the recipes in this book use spenda as a sugar substitute so if you don't like splenda you could use regular sugar. But this is a great cook book!

5-0 out of 5 stars Helpful information and great recipes
When we embarked on low-carb for weight loss, I feared heaps of red meat and tiny bits of veggies. This cookbook has great general information and wonderful recipes.I have enjoyed every one so much, I passed the recipe on to other low-carbers and recommended this book - something I never do.Very good choice for us. ... Editorial Review

Designed to catapult your body into a state of fat meltdown, Dr. Atkins's diet has taken America by storm. It targets insulin, the hormone that regulates blood sugar levels. The bodies of most overeaters are continually in a state of hyperinsulinism; their bodies are so adept at releasing insulin to help convert excess carbohydrates to fat that there's always too much of the hormone circulating through the body. This puts the body into a bind; it always wants to store fat. Even when people with hyperinsulinism try to lose weight--especially when they cut fat but increase carbohydrate consumption--their efforts will fail. This is why Dr. Atkins refers to insulin as "the fat-producing hormone."

Dr. Atkins's diet is extremely low in carbohydrates, which helps to regulate insulin production and decrease circulating insulin; less insulin soon results in less fat storage and fewer food cravings. The diet is far from torturous, though--those who've tried it attest that hunger is not a part of this plan. Ninety percent of Dr. Atkins's patients--more than 25,000 of them--have experienced dramatic weight loss. The book includes recipes for such luscious, low-carb dishes as lobster soup, zabaglione, sea bass, and blueberry ice cream, and even includes a carbohydrate gram counter and menus. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars 2 1/2 years later and it's still the best thing I've ever
done for myself. I (female) started in Jan 2003 at age 32, 5'11", 254 lbs with a laundry list of ailments (Acid reflux, painful heels & back, headaches, high blood pressure and was pre-diabetic). In my first 6 months all of my aches and pains disappeared and in my first year I lost 71 lbs. Right now I've lost a total of 104 lbs and have NEVER felt better! I'm 16 lbs under my goal weight and maintaining this lifestyle is second nature now. I get all of my carbs from healthy vegetables, fruits, and nuts.

Dr. Atkins literally saved my life and I just wish he was around to thank in person!

I owe everything to the good Dr. A!

2-0 out of 5 stars Tuna eaters beware
I did The Atkin's Diet two years ago. I lost 20 pounds in a month. But after a year things started to go terribly wrong. I begain having horrible syptoms of food allergy. But testing showed I had none. I went to doctor after doctor and they all told me I was crazy. I finally had no choice ,but to do research on my own. I discovered a web site about Mercury Poisoning. I had all the classic syptoms and none of the docotrs I saw had any clue. I found a company that did testing by hair samples. I ordered the test and bingo, I'm posative for higher levels of Mercury. And it was from eating so much canned tuna while on the Atkins Diet. I'm not blaming the diet plan itself, but he does recommend eating tuna. I wouldn't go there if I were you.

5-0 out of 5 stars yOU WILL UNDERSTAND IF YOU READ THE BOOK
There has been such controversy around Dr Atkins and his diet.

I can bet a dollar to a doughnut the people arguing about it have not read the book.

He explains how in the last 50-100 years the diet of average people has changed and how our lifelong diets have affected our bodies.

Many people become hypoglycemic (like me) in later life, and/or develop Type 2 diabetes (like me).

Our diets and genetics are often the culprit. Even those of us with a genetic leaning towards obesity, Dr atkins explains what we can do He goes nto detail for several areas where people may have problems

The difference between this diet and ANY other is KETOSIS! When we are in Ketosis (we have used up our carbs and use our own fat for energy) we have an incredible edge.

I feel great , sleep less, and am not as hungry He explains the truth about fat (why we can have butter, and sour cream and nuts on this diet)

After eating all this fat, my chloresterol went down 90 points and triglycerides?
My doctor was astonished :D) Whenever I hear someone talking about their "HERO", I think of Dr Atkins ... Read more
