Editorial Review

He may be an old standby, but he never lets us down. When in doubt, turn to the story of the cat that transformed a dull, rainy afternoon into a magical and just-messy-enough adventure. There's another, hidden adventure, too: this book really will help children learn to read. With his simple and often single-vowel vocabulary, the good Doctor knew what he was doing: hear it, learn it, read it--laughing all the way. The Cat in the Hat is a must for any child's library. ... Editorial Review

This timeless Dr. Seuss classic was first published in 1960, and has been delighting readers ever since. Sam-I-am is as persistent as a telemarketer, changing as many variables as possible in the hopes of convincing the nameless skeptic that green eggs and ham are a delicacy to be savored. He tries every manner of presentation with this "nouveau cuisine"--in a house, with a mouse, in a box, with a fox, with a goat, on a boat--to no avail. Then finally, finally the doubter caves under the tremendous pressure exerted by the tireless Sam-I-am. And guess what? Well, you probably know what happens, but even after reading Green Eggs and Ham the thousandth time, the climactic realization that green eggs and ham are "so good, so good, you see" is still a rush. As usual, kids will love Dr. Seuss's wacky rhymes and whimsical illustrations--and this time, they might even be so moved as to finally take a taste of their broccoli. (Ages 4 to 8) ... Read more

by Beatrix Potter

Editorial Review

The quintessential cautionary tale, Peter Rabbit warns naughty children about the grave consequences of misbehaving. When Mrs. Rabbit beseeches her four furry children not to go into Mr. McGregor's garden, the impish Peter naturally takes this as an open invitation to create mischief. He quickly gets in over his head, when he is spotted by farmer McGregor himself. Any child with a spark of sass will find Peter's adventures remarkably familiar. And they'll see in Flopsy, Mopsy, and Cotton-tail that bane of their existence: the "good" sibling who always does the right thing. One earns bread and milk and blackberries for supper, while the obstinate folly of the other warrants medicine and an early bedtime.

Beatrix Potter's animal stories have been a joy to generations of young readers. Her warm, playful illustrations in soft colors invite children into the world of words and flights of fancy. Once there, she gently and humorously guides readers along the path of righteousness, leaving just enough room for children to wonder if that incorrigible Peter will be back in McGregor's garden tomorrow. (Ages Baby to Preschool) ... Read more

Puss in Boots (Caldecott Honor Book)

Editorial Review

Charles Perrault first published his collection of classic French folk tales 300 years ago, including "Cinderella," "Sleeping Beauty," and this entertaining story about a most clever feline. In Puss and Boots, a poor miller dies and leaves his youngest son nothing but a cat. The son is none too happy about it, either; " ...once I've eaten my cat and made a muff out of the fur, I'm sure to starve," he says. But what a legacy the bequeathed cat turns out to be! The cat in tall boots creates a new identity for the youngest son--the Marquis of Carabas, complete with fine clothes, fields of wheat, a castle stolen from an ogre, and in the end, the respect of the king and the hand of the king's daughter. The story itself is gracefully and humorously told, and the text, set in large gray type, adds an old-fashioned air to the tale.

Fred Marcellino's illustrations for Puss in Boots--a Caldecott Honor Book--are infused with golden light and summer warmth in the sun-dappled woods and beside the fields of ripe grain. Many of his paintings show a masterful use of perspective; the reader sometimes looks down on a scene as though from a balcony, or from below, at a huge charging lion. Marcellino has also illustrated a version of Hans Christian Andersen's The Steadfast Tin Soldier and two books by Tor Seidler, A Rat's Tale and The Wainscott Weasel. Young listeners won't soon forget this crafty character of a cat, who has a great deal of charm despite his less-than-honest means of helping his master. (Ages 5 to 9) ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great version of a classic
There are so many things I like about THIS version in particular of the classic Little Red Riding Hood.....I like the lessons taught (don't talk to strangers and listen to what Mom says for example) and I like the way the story begins with the Grandmother making the red cape....the detail of Red Riding Hood loving the cape so much she did everything in it- even she slept in it -is SO true for many toddler /preschoolers, my daughter included, who have slept in everything from a Tutu to a Buzz Lightyear costumecuz they couldn't bare to part with it....nice touch....
The illustrations are very nice and I like that the wolf is not drawn in a scary way.....nor is he killed or hurt badly at the end...he falls out the window accidentally, tumbles down a hill and runs away..... I also like how Grandma comes out of the closet at the end (she is not eaten by the wolf) and the story ends with them having a picnic....

My 3 year old, who HAS been scared by wolf illustrations in other books, loved this one! I found it enjoyable to read to her...

5-0 out of 5 stars wonderful story for delayed or autistic kids to reenact
Good rendition of a classic story..perfect if you are looking for stories that your speech delayed or autistic child can learn to "reenact" during floortime. We go to the park now and ask the other kids if they want to play "red riding hood" and they usually all say YES! So the book is really just the beginning of a fun play activity.

5-0 out of 5 stars Classic TaleEmphasizes Family Closeness and Moral Values
This is such a wonderful version of the classic story.

When I was looking for a copy of this classic tale, I wanted to know about the ending.Thankfully, this is NOT the more gruesome ending where the wolf eats Little Red and Grandma and the woodcarvers chop the wolf open.My daughter is only 2, and aside from this not making sense that the victims are still alive after the wolf eats them, it's a little inappropriate for this age group (the part about chopping the wolf open). Instead, the wolf puts grandma in the closet to "save her for later".The best part is that the cape almost seems to represent a super-hero type or magical properties ("She leaped away, light as a leaf in her cherry red cape").

This version has a more elaborate, sweeter beginning than the version I grew up with, which merely jumped right into Little Red Riding Hood leaving for the path to Grandma's house. It begins with Grandma sewing the red cape for Little Red Riding Hood because her Grandma enjoyed her visits with her granddaughter. It then goes on to explain how she wore the cape so often that this is how she got her nickname. This emphasizes the importance of special family relationships.

The illustrations are absolutely gorgeous, yet simple enough for the very young child. One element that I especially enjoyed is that the nightgown the wolf wears (Grandma's nightgown) has sheep print on it.Besides adding humor, this adds the element of foreshadowing (hint, hint!).

Of course, the moral of the story remains the same.Leaving the path will always lead to trouble. ... Read more

Editorial Review

Paul O. Zelinsky, 1998 Caldecott medalist for Rapunzel, also has three Caldecott Honor Books under his belt: Hansel and Gretel, Swamp Angel, and this fine edition of Rumpelstiltskin. Zelinsky's oil paintings are perfectly suited to the strange saga of the little man with the secret name who knows how to spin straw into gold. The golden light infusing the late medieval setting subtly reinforces the theme.

The visual characterization of Rumpelstiltskin is a triumph: an odd elfin man with bulbous eyes, a gigantic, flat black hat, impossibly skinny arms and legs, and long, pointed black shoes. This Rumpelstiltskin is not scary or horrid, but rather mischievous and weird. When the young queen finally guesses his name, and thus is able to keep her baby, he flies off on his huge cooking spoon (with a pout), true to the Grimms's 1819 version of the story. (Zelinsky provides notes on his text in the back of the book, indicating his careful research into various editions of the original Grimm tale.) Zelinsky's retelling is straightforward and smooth, with only a few lines of text on each page to complement the truly magnificent full-page illustrations. A delightful book worth its weight in gold! 5-0 out of 5 stars One Of The Most Beautiful Stories Ever To Be Written
I am Mary Sanders, 14 years old of Cambridge, Massachusetts. When I was in first grade, I remember my teacher reading to us aloud from this book. Even though, as a six-year-old little girl, I understood this tale perfectly, and I was fascinated by it, and have read this book, many times since, the first time the tale of Rumpelstiltskin was written. Well, it's about a poor, and of course, beautiful miller's daughter, who is held in the castle of the king who demands her to spin a certain amount of straw into gold. The girl has no knowledge whatsoever on how to do this, and the King told her if she failed to do as she was told she would die. Weeping terribly a little man comes to her telling her he will spin the straw into gold in exchange for something. She gives him her ring. The little man spins the straw into gold. Then, the king makes her spin it a second time, in exchange, the girl gives the man her necklace. However it happens a third time, and the girl runs out of items. The little man makes her promise she will give him her first child. She agrees, thinking that will never happen, and becomes the king's wife. She brings a boy in the world, and the little man shows up demanding the child. She weeps and out of pity the little man tells her he will give her three days to guess his name, and if she does, she can keep to kid. Well, two days go by and no luck with names. Then a servant of hers discovers the man's name is RUMPELTSTILKSKIN. She tells the little man and she is correct, and in rage he flees. But in this version, the little man flies off on a giant cooking spoon. In the real version he rips himself apart. This is a wonderful tale for children. Read it. It's great.

5-0 out of 5 stars The most technically correct spinning wheel in kiddie lit
A rare book.Zelinsky tells the story of "Rumpelstiltskin", evoking a story most American children will know.Especially impressive is his tiny details.A good example of this is his spinning wheel. Many illustrated Rumpelstiltskin stories show the spinning wheel as something that Rumpelstiltskin throws straw towards, causing golden coins appear. In this edition the spinning wheel is technically correct. The miller's daughter is given empty bobbins, onto which Rumpelstiltskin spins golden threads.Zelinsky's accomplished paintings show the golden bobbins gleaming, one on top of another. The portrayal of Rumpelstiltskin himself was described in one review I read as "Rackhamesque".I don't know if this was the illustrator's intent, but he certain does seem culled from a classic European fairy tale book from the early twentieth (or even nineteenth) century. The oil paintings look Southern European, and though a story with an odd moral (if you can outwit your opponent by cheating, you're in the clear) it is an excellent book for children.Like its companion book, "Rapunzel", this too would be a promising book for storytelling.

5-0 out of 5 stars Beautiful, Complicated Tale with Magnificent Illustrations
As previous reviews have noted, the illustrations are exquisite and quite out of the ordinary; instantly captivating and magical at first glance. My daughter is 3 and 1/2 and is riveted by the book.I feel confused at how strongly some of the readers feel about the book's "message."Yes, many of the characters are "bad" and it is morally ambiguous, but the sheer flight of fancy and imagination captured by the tale has intrigued and fascinated readers and listeners since the early 1800's.It's like a child's version of a scary movie without the macabre details, and even though Rumpelstiltskin himself is ugly and frightening even though he is actually "saving" the queen, the book and story's power coem from the fact that he is such an unusual character; not whether he is good or bad.Furthermore, the additional magical ideas of straw into gold, being locked up in a castle, servants running off in the middle of the night, and a little elfen man riding around on a spoon are bizarre and fanciful and elements like these fill much of the fairy tale genre for centuries.I say, get overthe p.c. messages and concetrate on the fantasy and magic of the story that is so compelling to readers, especially with Zelinsky's magnificent pictures.Life is complicated, and so is the story - it doesn't try to answer all the questions and make everybody good/bad/punished/redeemed.That is not the point of this particular story. If you only want a story with a moral, it's true that this is not the book for you.If creative ideas and concepts that you could never think of yourself are what your looking for in a book, then it is the book for you! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars great, except for some errors..............
The picures are wonderful, stories are great, but the part of The Story of Eloise, they miss judged the spacing and left out the 1st letter of the starting paragraph. Someone didn't proofread it right. You get all 4 book, one great buy with the extras! ( the scrapbook and the story of Eloise) Hopefully they caught the errors for the next printing. A book you can pass down from generation to generation!

5-0 out of 5 stars Finally A Treasury
This is definitely one of the best treasuries I have ever bought. Eloise is such a fun and adorable character. I don't know who couldn't like her.

This treasury contains Eloise in Moscow, Eloise, Eloise in Paris, and Eloise at Christmastime. Not only that, there's a special scrapbook all about the author Kay Thompson featuring pictures and info about the author of this beloved character.

This is a must have book for the holidays, or anytime. So pick up a copy, and charge it please.

I read to my kids a lot, and this is the one series that I completely don't get:I don't see why it's funny or touching or...anything.Neither do my kids.

1-0 out of 5 stars the WORST experience ever with ordering
I ordered two copies of this subscrition to find that I am recieving one and the other is lost in space, even though I have paid for it. the newpaper company amazon order through can't find it and Amazon refuses to deal with it, just saying they have passed the order on. The magazine themselves have never heard of me either; even though I ALREADY PAID for it.
NEVER EVER us this system for ordering magazines it is just not worth it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Get your kids to read!
Iordered this as a birthday gift for my 8yr old nephew who loves to both play and watch sports. Now he grabs the issue as soon as it arrives and runs to his room to read it and get his new trading cards. Each issue also comes with a small poster in the middle that can be hung in their room or locker. It appears to have the same or similar articles as the "adult" version but no swimsuit issue and otherwise edited for the younger set.He has already asked me to renew the subscription for his next birthday. This is a great way to get your kids reading which will also help improve their writing as well as other skills needed in school (and life).
If your child loves sports I highly recommend investing in a subscription - well worth the $20!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great magazine for kids
I've been reading this with my six year old son for several months now. It's a great way to get in some pleasurable reading, and start forming a reading habit, with a child who likes sports.

There are a number of standard sections, and nice short articles in kid-friendly language. Each month they have an insert with some playing cards which he looks forward to.And they'll interview a player about a specific skill -- how to steal a base, how to play defense in basketball, etc.

I recommend it both for the fun/sports content, and also for the educational benefit of starting the reading habit. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Disney Adventures is just one of them...
Seriously, folks, isn't EVERYBODY tired of hearing from the same shows over and over? Yeah, yeah..Kim Possible, That's so Raven. This magizine just tries to reinforce the idea over and over just like the shows. They said in the magizine that Kim Possible is BETTER than Spongebob Squarepants...[Astonished] Look, if you are one of those kids [Or Adults] that just likes to sit in front of the TV on Saturday mornings craving these shows, than this you to hop on the Disney Cruise with this magizine and never come back. But, if you are a kid [Or Adult] like me that is more mature and wants to look at something that isn't quit so bad, I'd reccomend Nick Magizine. Disney needs to go out of business [Which we know is never ever gonna happen because they got money coming out of their butts] because they are just taking over the world. [Think about it, they got their own private island, they got their own state of the art cruise line] They probably make way more money than any other company out there.

The bottom line is just don't buy. Look at the cover and you will see what I mean.

3-0 out of 5 stars Disney Adventures Magazine
Better then Nickelodean, but still not quite there.Too many advertisements, too less of actual reading material.Rather uninteresting comics that I prefer to skip over, and only a few really interesting pages per magazine.Celebrity interviews are nice, but almost every magazine has those.Kind of cheesy activities, and overall, just not my kind of magazine.I prefer American Girl, Highlights For Children, and Discovery Girls. They may not be considered "cool" by some people, but they're definately better quality and worth what you spend on them.

4-0 out of 5 stars A great magazine but....
I like this magazine, but after a year of reading it, um you get older and it get's boring!! Though I like Disney, but there's a lot of advertisement, and it's really not that great. I mean you've already seen advertisement in t.v. or at the store, now magazines!! The comic section, I don't really like because well it's boring!! I hate comics!! I like the fill-out stuff and games. And when it's time for the Radiodisney Awards thingy it's cool. I like that part. But as a 11 year old, this a little bit too young for me. I recommend Popstar Magazine for ages 11 and up. And like other Teen magazines, sometimes they get boring because, there's more about like beauty and mushy gushy stuff, but I think it's okay, I recommend more of music or movie magazines is more interesting, for 11-12 year olds it's perfect. I hope you made a good choice of this magazine, if you like it or not. Check grocery stores, Barnes and Noble, or Borders to get this magazine. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars *Um,I'm 12.It's okay but....*
...It can be weak. About 1\4 of the magazine is ads, and the other is crude humor. I'm mean Ilike jokes and all, but there is way too much! Since I'm getting older, I'm reading GL,Teen,Discovery Girls, and AG. But I like this mag. It has it's uppoints: Celeb Chats, weird facts, a calendar for what's happening that month. It also tells when new nick shows are, which is cool. It's more for 8-11 range but I like it. But I'm probably gonna stop getting it soon.I seriously hoped I helped, and this mag is great for kids. Thanks, and bye!

4-0 out of 5 stars GOOD!

2-0 out of 5 stars Too Much Rude Humor
I recently stopped my subscription. This magazine has a lot of rude humor and is too inmature on my level. Kids 10 and under would enjoy it the most. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Eh...
Cutesy, fluffy, but of no use to girls who actually have problems in life. When girls are at the crucial age of 11, 12, or so, and when they are just starting to discover their interests in boys, when they are just beginning their journeys towards womanhood, it is no time for them to be bombarded with information on how to kiss a boy. That comes much later.
Girls who act so mature, kissing and dating boys when they are so young, are doomed to a life of divorce and unhappiness. THey will think that every cute guy who comes along actually cares about them. Girls that age have more important things to worry about than catching a cute guy. I am very disappointed...I thought this magazine would deal with issues such as grades, building better relationships with your parents, dealing with your raging emotions. But GL is all about cute styles, bikini-worthy bodies, little blonde girls, and boys. Yuck.
That said, it does have some cute quizzes. But again, totally useless entertainment.

5-0 out of 5 stars PERFECT For 12-15 year olds
I think this magazine is perfect for girls who "graduated" from American Girl and\or Discovery Girls, i know i sure have, it really deserves 5 stars! I loooooooooooove Girls Life!!!!!!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars One word-Awesome!
It's a awesome magazine and it's not a superficel magazine but it has too much on guys and how to get them. But there's advice, cool new fashions, and much, much more! At first my mom did't like it but then she liked it when I told her about it and how I was getting older. I bet she's glad that I don't I don't read crap like J-14 and Bop. I love this mag, but Teen is my fav, but this mag comes in second. It's a grown-up version of Discovery Girls and cooler than American Girl! ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Earn a Don't Read Boys' Life Merit Badge
I haven't touched this magazine in over a decade.I used to read it every time I got an issue in my parents' mailbox.Of course, by read, I mean I would skip through the articles that taught me nothing and head over to the comics.Dink and Duff were my favorite, although not laugh-out-loud funny.I recently skimmed through Webelos Woody, The Tracy Twins, Peewee Harris, and the sometimes hilarious Pedro. When I was even younger, I used to spend a *lot* of time perusing the junk pages, where you could order 8 pranks for the price of a dollar or something.

Now, as an alternative, I highly recommend going through the Boy Scout Handbooks with your kids. The Cub Scout handbooks are just as interesting as the Boy Scout ones, and they actually teach you about health, staying fit, learning knots, Fire safety, backpacking/camping tips, etc.

I don't know how the modern Boys' Life compares to the old issues, but it seems like it's fallen for the same virus as every other magazine I've stopped ordering: advertisements.

1-0 out of 5 stars If there was an option for zero stars this would earn it!
This magazine is inundated with advertising. The few articles that do exist are saturated with trend ideals and sparcely include the moral values that the Boy Scout organization is said to imply. I am disappointed that the BS organization is willing to be associated with such junk, and supports yet another venue for exploiting funds from its particpants.

1-0 out of 5 stars Horrible
Boys Life Sucks. I am in Boy scouts and I still get this stupid Magaziene. I thought thay only gave it to Cub Scouts. It is so lame. There is no good articals in it and the comics are for losers. I threw all of them out. I think it should stop. It should be called Girls life. If you are a Boy Scout or Cub Scout I sugest you throw the crappy magizienes out. If you are not a cub scout of boy scout dont get this crap. ... Read more
