5-0 out of 5 stars Discovering Christianity Again
The "Christian-New Age Quarterly" magazine has helped realize I am a Christian even though my beliefs aren't orthodox and I certainly don't interpret the Bible literally.

I couldn't accept many of the Christian messages I was taught as a youth. How could a God of unfathomable love send--or allow any of His children to choose--a fiery hell forever? Designing a plan for his "only Son" to suffer and die so everyone is saved didn't make too much sense to me either. Original sin, only one way to salvation, a literal devil, one lifetime only -- it was all just too bizarre and nonsensical to me.

Over the years, I developed a deep and eclectic spirituality based on Eastern philosophies, native wisdom sources, metaphysics, and contemporary research like near-death experiences. I was very comfortable with this blend but figured I probably didn't qualify as a Christian anymore.

Imagine my surprise and delight when I discovered the "Christian-New Age Quarterly" and many people who had also merged spiritual wisdom with Christ-centered teachings. Reading insightful writing by pastors and theologians with open hearts and minds helped me realize I am a Christian. My own particular mix of New Age, liberal, enlightened, and widely encompassing Christianity makes the most sense to me. I'm grateful that this magazine has provided a wider sense of faith, knowledge, and fellowship.

5-0 out of 5 stars Worth investigating.......
You might try subscribing to this periodical if you have a desire to learn more about herbs, be they medicinal or culinary or for some other human purpose. It's just coincidence of course, but I had a migraine headache this past week and what is the lead article for the Spring 2005 issue?"Chart a course for Migraine Relief".Now how's that for currency? I find various HQ articles are "right on the money" in that respect.

Notice how human use drives human classification schemes in amateur approaches, while botany or science often often takes a different view? I was pleased to see that some of the articles in HQ included scientifically based information such as Latin naming so that I could cross-reference suggested uses. (I read the HQ issues cover to cover, However, I continue to cross-check everything as I don't want to poison myself and/or develop a horrible rash.)

The editors have made a wise decision which is to create a distilled journal with apparently fact-checked information.Rushing into print monthly may cause more than migraine headaches or rashes. Some monthly publications may 'increase' market share because they appear to be more current than a quarterly report, but I am not convinced material hastily prepared will be more useful. You cannot rush solid thinking and distilled knowledge, which some folks still call herbal wisdom.

This journal is full of wisdom.

5-0 out of 5 stars Home Grown
Herb Quarterly has a wonderful home-grown feel that results from the marriage of watercolor and other fine art with all sorts of articles concerning herbs. While there is a quaint look to HQ the articles are up-to-date, thorough and very informative. This magazine will appeal to all types of people interested in herbs, from beginners to more adept herbalists, there is always something of interest.HQ features a diverse approach and coverage of herbs, crossing cultures and various orientations making it open to medicinal herbalists, gardeners, product formulators (handmade soap & other natural products) aromatherapists and magical herbalists.

5-0 out of 5 stars You will want to keep them
Each Issue goes to the nth degree to carry to explore the uses and social history of herbs. The information is laid out in columns with interesting information and pictures in the margins. Most articles have references to where to find associated information of the subject. This is not just a good read; the magazine contains hands-on projects from soap making to Pharmacopoeia. The small amount of advertising is relevant to the world of herbs. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Great Magazine, but they don't deliver
I am currently working as a pastry cook in an upscale hotel and love this magazine. However, I paid for a year's subscription for Pastry Art and Design in January and have received 1 issue since then.I spoke to 2 or 3 other chefs and co-workers concerning this matter and they said the same thing.I even wrote an e-mail 2 months ago asking the magazine distributor why I was not receiving my issues of the magazine and have gotten no reply.Extremely disappointing for such a good magazine.Hopefully they can get it together.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great magazine, make sure it's for you though
Good - This magazine will always show you the latest trends. You will get to know the names of the famous pastry chefs, their philosophies, their dessert likes and dislikes, and what inspires them. You will find out about the latest equipment. The magazine has beautiful photo coverage of world pastry competitions that you don't find elsewhere. You can learn a lot of ideas.

Bad - For the most part, I take ideas from this magazine, but do not use the recipes in the magazine. Most of the recipes seem to be plated desserts. A lot of them are are 'trendy', meaning they use things like chili, saffron, rosemary, and so on.Unless you make a lot of desserts, you may not want to be so experimental. The other thing is that they require lots of parts- a typical recipe might require a tuile, a coulis, two mousses, and a cake.Unless you do this on a production level, it is not worth it.

Overall - This is definitely an advanced magazine, more advanced than 'chocolatier'. If you don't know how much an egg yolk weighs in grams, it may be over your head. This can be both good and bad depending on your skill and enthusiasm for pastry making. I'm a good home pastry chef, but not a professional. So I like to read Pastry Arts and Design as people read fashion magazines - to learn and to enjoy, but not necessarily to do.If you're a professional, you may appreciate it more than me.If you're a beginning home baker, you may barely appreciate it at all.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great for professionals, not practical for the home baker.
I am trained as a pastry chef and I love this magazine because it has a lot of information about the current pastry industry, and lots of ideas for new desserts - flavors and designs and such.It also contains a lot of information about what the trends are, what is "hot" at the moment, etc.I really enjoy the interviews and getting to see other people's work.
If you are a home baker, it might be fun to look through, but all of the recipes that are printed are really not practical unless you are an extremely serious baker. For example, in the November 2002 issue (this is just the issue I grabbed and the page I opened up to, I didn't go searching for a particularly difficult recipe) there is a recipe for a Rose Parfait. There are six different components you have to make before even putting the thing together - vanilla ice cream, raspberry sorbet, sliced almonds in syrup, almond meringue, rose parfait, and raspberry coulis. All together there are 21 different ingredients listed, including glucose powder, trimoline, stabilizer, mono-diglycerides - things the home kitchen does not normally stock. In addition, ingredients are listed only by weight, so you have to be able to weigh out .03 ounces of salt and 2.8 ounces of egg yolks.
However, if you are not interested in actually making these things, if you are very interested in pastry I would still get a subscription if you don't mind the cost. But first, check out a couple issues at the local library or buy them off the newsstand so you can make sure you really want to spend the $... ... 3-0 out of 5 stars It's hard to review a magazine, but...
On the whole, Reptiles magazine is *not* really worth it for more advanced herpers. There's a preponderance of articles that relate primarily to care of animals; this is not bad, but myself, I prefer to read about an animals natural ecology and habitat (and microhabitat) and behaviours, and figure out the care from that information; it works just as well if not better, and allows one to actually learn about animals rather than following cookie cutter information.

Furthermore, there is a focus on easier species. This isn't really a bad thing per se; I'm happy that the novice keeper is bombarded with info on easier species, maybe it'll help keep them from getting in over thier heads with harder species. It's just that I don't really want to read another article over caring for Lampropeltis or Elaphe every month.

That said, sometimes Reptiles has a great article; some time ago they did a multiple issue article over african varanids (focusing savs and whitethroats, but dealing with most species) that was really wonderfull. They've done great articles on jumping vipers, and conservation issues. Also, they have some really fairly interesting stories about people's interaction with herps. It's worth picking up maybe every few months, but I don't subscribe.

2-0 out of 5 stars This Magazine Stinks
This magazine caters to a younger audience. Don't subscribe if you want in-depth, detailed information regarding Reptiles. The layout and design is playful and childish, and the content is thin. It's obvious the editors are hurting for content because they allow even the smallest story to consume an entire page.
Plus, the goofy cartoons and silly "games" are just annoying. Too bad the Vivarium isn't available.

5-0 out of 5 stars comprehensive
This magazine is comprehensive on the topic of breeding reptiles and has equally valuable information concerning recent politics(economic and preservation issues), discoveries, veterinary medicine, and surveys. It always has interesting, informative and in depth articles on specific species.
There are different columns answering questions about breeding, reptile health, and miscelaeneous issues which are prove to be very useful.Reptiles also has comprehensive lists of expos and breeders.
I give this magazine my best recomendation, it's worth much more than I'm paying for it, the information within it is that of the best herpetology experts. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars From the novice to the advanced lister; should appeal to all
This is one of the few magazines I read from cover-to-cover.Bird Watcher's Digest has something for everyone. They offer advice on how to improve feeder systems for individuals who enjoy backyard birdwatching. They provide informative identification tips for those trickier species for people who have just begun their journey into the feathered realm.Additionally, they have great authors & astounding birders, like Kenn Kauffman (who's both), who regularly write short articles for them. These should appeal to everyone at whatever experience level. The size of the magazine makes it easy to tote into the field so you can pull it out & read while waiting for that elusive rarity to show up for you to get a quick glimpse of before it dashes off to parts unknown again.I highly recommend this magazine.Besides, you can't be in the field all of the time & this makes the perfect thing to read on those cold, wet, rainy days when even the birds are smart enough to stay in-doors. ...
