Old School Director: Todd Phillips Average Customer Review: Theatrical Release US | Canada | United Kingdom | Germany | France Editorial Review When three thirtysomething friends with woman troubles (Luke Wilson,Will Ferrell, and Vince Vaughn) decide to form a fraternity, it's supposedly tosave Wilson from losing his house, which the nearby college is trying to claimfor academic purposes. But really, Ferrell and Vaughn are desperate to return tothe reckless, feckless days of beer bongs and hot chicks, and they drag Wilsonalong with them as they throw themselves into gathering frat pledges of allages. Old School could have been just another string of bad jokes hangingon a flimsy plot, but the script and the cast have a jovial energy and justenough grounding in reality--at least, up until the obligatory beat-the-systemending, but by that point you'll forgive the excesses of this silly, cheerful, and frequentlyfunny movie. Featuring Jeremy Piven and Juliette Lewis, with cameos by SnoopDog, Andy Dick, and others. --Bret Fetzer ... Read more Reviews (233)

SpongeBob SquarePants - Sea Stories Director: C.H. Greenblatt, Aaron Springer, Walt Dohrn, Dan Povenmire, Sam Henderson, Paul Tibbett, Sherm Cohen, Jay Lender Average Customer Review: DVD (13 May, 2003) list price: $16.99 -- our price: $15.29 (price subject to change: see help) US | Canada | United Kingdom | Germany | France Editorial Review Nickelodeon's SpongeBob SquarePants has become so popular, it must be considered a phenomenon. The series has a pleasant, predictable, and slightly offbeat humor, and these mini-adventures give viewers what they expect. SpongeBob has to deal with a ghostly pirate, his own insecurities when his skill as a preparer of krabby patties is challenged, and the dangerous pleasures of fisherman's hooks. The voice acting is often amateurish and imitative. Patrick suggests a Homer Simpson-wannabe, while Bubble Bass sounds like the Comic Book Guy. The humor can become gross. In episode No. 2, SpongeBob absorbs a bathtub full of water, then vomits it at Gary, the snail who acts as his dog. But it seems pointless to grumble about these weaknesses. SpongeBob SquarePants has clearly won a place in the hearts of American viewers. (Suitable for ages 8 and older: cartoon violence, minor gross-out humor) --Charles Solomon ... The VHS edition contains five episodes, all of which are insanely funny: While all the episodes contain fairly innocent humor (that parents and everyone alike will laugh to) when compared to other past cartoons (such as "Ren and Stimpy"), I'd advice parents to stick around when your children watch SpongeBob. He can provide you with some valuable tools to get your children to understand certain things, but by the same token, he can twist some things that might later complicate matters (making certain things confusing in their minds), considering the easy way in which the kids connect to the character. All in all, far from a bad influence and very funny. The only aside: just keep an eye on the kids and talk to them about the episodes, if you feel it is appropriate. ... Read more Asin: B00006IJJB |

Meatballs Director: Ivan Reitman Average Customer Review: DVD (23 November, 1999) list price: $14.98 US | Canada | United Kingdom | Germany | France Editorial Review Bill Murray plays a hip camp counselor at a summer facility for geeky kids and assorted losers. Murray's brand of ironic comedy feels grafted onto this banal and sentimental 1979 celebration of misfits. The comedian's frequent director, Ivan Reitman (Ghostbusters), was still finding his sea legs with this one, and he nearly convinced everyone at the time that Murray's film career was never going to happen. --Tom Keogh ... The Nutty Professor Director: Tom Shadyac Average Customer Review: DVD (02 September, 2003) list price: $14.98 -- our price: $13.48 (price subject to change: see help) US | Canada | United Kingdom | Germany | France Editorial Review Lucky for Eddie Murphy he got ahold of the rights to this 1963 Jerry Lewis classic before Jim Carrey did.Murphy had a comeback of sorts with his Jeckyll-and-Hyde-derived fable of awkward chemistry professor Sherman Klump (Murphy), who discovers a potion that transforms him into the suave, cocky lady-killer Buddy Love (also Murphy). The big difference between the two versions is that Murphy's Sherman is not only a nerdy intellectual but is also grossly obese, which provides the opportunity for some hilarious digital transformation effects, as well as some gentle satire of our culture's attitudes toward fat people. As he did in the hit Coming to America, Murphy plays multiple roles, and the scenes at the Klump family dinner table, in which he plays everybody, are brilliantly funny.(Murphy won the National Society of Film Critics' award for best actor of 1996 for these performances.)Lewis based his Buddy Love on the 1960s ideal of cool exemplified by Sinatra and the Rat Pack; Murphy stumbles a bit by playing up the oily phoniness of his latter-day Love a little too soon, but for the most part The Nutty Professor represents a welcome return to form for Eddie Murphy. --Jim Emerson ... Shrek (Two-Disc Special Edition) Director: Vicky Jenson, Andrew Adamson Average Customer Review: DVD (02 November, 2001) list price: $26.99 -- our price: $20.24 (price subject to change: see help) US | Canada | United Kingdom | Germany | France Editorial Review William Steig's delightfully fractured fairy tale is the right stuff for this computer-animated adaptation full of verve and wit. Our title character (voiced by Mike Myers) is an agreeable enough ogre who wants to live his days in peace. When the diminutive Lord Farquaad (John Lithgow) evicts local fairy-tale creatures (including the now-famous Seven Dwarfs, Pinocchio, and the Gingerbread Man), they settle in the ogre's swamp and Shrek wants answers from Farquaad. A quest of sorts starts for Shrek and his new pal, a talking donkey (Eddie Murphy), where battles have to be won and a princess (Cameron Diaz) must be rescued from a dragon lair in a thrilling action sequence. The story is stronger than most animated fare, but it's the humor that makes Shrek a winner. The PG rating is stretched when Murphy and Myers hit their strides. The mild potty humor is fun enough for 10-year-olds but will never embarrass their parents. Shrek is never as warm and inspired as the Toy Story films, but the realistic computer animation and a rollicking soundtrack keep the entertainment in fine form. Produced by DreamWorks, the film also takes several delicious stabs at its crosstown rival, Disney. --Doug Thomas ... Read more Features Reviews (1156)

Onion - National Ed Average Customer Review: Magazine list price: $39.95 -- our price: $54.67 (price subject to change: see help) US | Canada | United Kingdom | Germany | France Features Reviews (3)
But the humor isn't even the largest part of the magazine, just the front. The Onion A.V. Club takes up most of each issue, with in-depth articles on current movies, music, books, personalities, and more.It has a distinctly New York-oriented bent, as given away by things like concert listings for NYC, but most of it is applicable to the avant-garde and the hip-n-happening nationwide. This magazine is an emblem of its age.Get it, read it, study it, and inject it directly into your bloodstream. Then you'll never wonder what's REALLY going on in the world around you again.

There are columns by Will Durst, Jim Hightower, Dave Barry, Andy Borowitz, and cartoons -- Tom the Dancing Bug, Too Much Coffee Man, Ted Rall, The K Chronicles. The only bad thing I can say about Funny Times is that the ink comes off on your fingers, just like a regular newspaper. So keep a bottle of hand sanitizer nearby when you read it.

Liar Liar (Collector's Edition) Director: Tom Shadyac Average Customer Review: DVD (31 May, 2005) list price: $14.98 -- our price: $10.49 (price subject to change: see help) US | Canada | United Kingdom | Germany | France Editorial Review Recovering from the box-office disappointment of The Cable Guy, Jim Carrey gave his fans what they wanted in this good-natured and frequently hilarious 1997 comedy. In a vehicle tailor-made for his verbal and physical antics, Carrey plays a lawyer whose penchant for prevarication is tested when his son makes a birthday wish that his father would tell the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth for 24 hours, so help him God! Without his daily defense of white lies, selfish fibs, and outright deception, the helpless lawyer finds himself blurting uncensored truths with total, and totally outrageous, candor. The script is clever enough to milk the premise for all it's worth, but it's Carrey's energy--particularly in a hilarious bathroom scene where he literally mugs himself to delay a trial--that keeps the movie going to its sappy happy ending. The supporting cast includes Jennifer Tilly, Cary Elwes, and Amanda Donohoe. --Jeff Shannon ... Read more Features Reviews (117)

Big Fat Liar Director: Shawn Levy Average Customer Review: DVD (01 June, 2003) list price: $14.98 -- our price: $13.48 (price subject to change: see help) US | Canada | United Kingdom | Germany | France Editorial Review Pitting kids against grown-ups has always been a reliable source of comedy, and Big Fat Liar indulges the "smart kid vs. dumb adult" fantasy with infectious enthusiasm. In this case it's Frankie Muniz from TV's Malcolm in the Middle, playing a Michigan eighth-grader whose penchant for lying results in parental scorn when he claims that a Hollywood movie mogul (ace character actor Paul Giamatti) has stolen the kid's hastily written English essay and turned it into his upcoming summer blockbuster. The kid only wants to prove his honesty and recruits his girlfriend (spunky TV star Amanda Bynes) to beat the honcho on his Hollywood turf. Elaborate practical jokes and slapstick gags turn this kid stuff (scripted and produced by two former child stars) into an enjoyable send-up of Hollywood absurdity. When combined with Giamatti's mastery of slow-burning megalomania, the show-biz in-jokes and Home Alone-style anarchy make this a harmless diversion for the young and young-at-heart. --Jeff Shannon ...
