    Editorial Review

When three thirtysomething friends with woman troubles (Luke Wilson,Will Ferrell, and Vince Vaughn) decide to form a fraternity, it's supposedly tosave Wilson from losing his house, which the nearby college is trying to claimfor academic purposes. But really, Ferrell and Vaughn are desperate to return tothe reckless, feckless days of beer bongs and hot chicks, and they drag Wilsonalong with them as they throw themselves into gathering frat pledges of allages. Old School could have been just another string of bad jokes hangingon a flimsy plot, but the script and the cast have a jovial energy and justenough grounding in reality--at least, up until the obligatory beat-the-systemending, but by that point you'll forgive the excesses of this silly, cheerful, and frequentlyfunny movie. Featuring Jeremy Piven and Juliette Lewis, with cameos by SnoopDog, Andy Dick, and others. --Bret Fetzer ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The mascot engulfed in flames is worth the whole film...
One of the funniest movies of 2003, Old School is silver screen gold for anyone who lived the life of a college party animal or once inhabited the halls of a beloved fraternity house. In the spirit of Animal House and PCU, Old School brings together a strange amalgam of immature males who wreck havoc on their college campus through wild parties, outrageous pranks, and outright criminal activities. Starring Luke Wilson, Vince Vaughn, and Will Farrell (of Saturday Night Live fame), Old School reads like a great SNL skit. You'll laugh yourself silly over this one.

When Mitch Martin (Luke Wilson) returns home early from a business seminar at his extraordinarily boring job, he finds his girlfriend cheating on him. They break up, and he's forced to move out. Moving into an off-campus dwelling at his old school, Mitch's friends Frank Ricard (Will Farrell) and Bernard "Beanie" Campbell (Vince Vaughn) reminisce about the glory of their fraternity days. The days of all fun and no work... Frank gets married, despite Beanie's attempts to talk him out of it at the altar (during the ceremony), but he quickly grows despondent and longs to enjoy the freedom of his youth once again. Meanwhile, Beanie is a bona fide family man with a successful business, but he too would like to relive the fun of their fraternity days.

Together, the three men decide to turn Mitch's house into a fraternity. They recruit a series of misfit students from around campus - nerds, social rejects, homeless men, and ninety-year-old womanizers. The hazing rituals are beyond description, and the parties are ridiculously outlandish and hilarious. All is going well (for everyone but Frank whose wife catches him running down main street naked) until Dean of Student Affairs Gordon Pritchard (Jeremy Piven), a former estranged classmate of the three men, decides to crack down on the fraternity. When he does, the fraternity must pass a series of tests and obstacles in order to retain their charter (and this, the climatic high-point of the film, is also the funniest of all).

Fun from beginning to end, Old School will not win any awards for dramatic scenes or cinematography. But it will win a lot of points as an outright hilarious comedy. If you haven't seen this film, then you really don't know what you're missing. Old School is a classic cult comedy fulfilling the dreams of countless former college fraternity members who ache to relive the greatest party days of their lives. Because it's so funny, Old School is a definite must-see film. Miss it at your own risk...

    The DVD Report

    1-0 out of 5 stars I wish I could choose 0
I have yet to understand why so many people find this film amusing. Some have said that it was a modern day Animal House, and while I find Animal House uninteresting I think that is a serious dis to Animal House. I don't know it just seems that this movie continuously tries to be funny way to hard and ends up falling into a pile of its own crummy jokes. This movie is like a stitched together hybrid of every other "guy" film out there. I say guy film meaning, "hey lets put some girls chest on the screen and it'll be an instant hit." Well atleast its seems to have a lot of special features, so when you get tired of the film you can watch those instead. This is probably the only bad rating on here for this film but man, I've watched it once and that was more than enough. ... Read more

Ever caught yourself wondering what exactly "Noonan" means? To avoid further embarrassment, every golfer--hack or scratch--must tee it up at Bushwood Country Club for the golf classic Caddyshack. Harold Ramis directs a who's who of 1970s and 1980s stand-up and sketch comedy: Bill Murray, Chevy Chase, and Rodney Dangerfield battle the forces of greed, golf, and gophers in a film that has become a comedy classic.--Richard M. 5-0 out of 5 stars Superb.
In terms of the world's greatest comedies, I would place Caddyshack near the top of the list.In terms of hilarity, I think it's slightly ahead of Stripes and just behind Blazing Saddles and Animal House.Every single line that comes out of Rodney Dangerfield's mouth is absolutely precious. After a little while, you become like Pavlov's dog as you are conditioned to laugh every time that he shows his face.I've seen this movie ten times and I still howl whenever it's on.The lines that Dangerfield says to Ted Knight and his wife are awesome ("hey honey, you must have been something before electricity" and "do you want to make 14 bucks the hard way?").Knight himself is a riot--"I've sentenced boys younger than yourself to the gas chamber."Even the dancing gopher is a great character. On the whole, it's hard to imagine a better cast of characters.Bill Murray is better than he was on most of his SNL skits and you could also say the same thing about Chevy Chase.I'm very envious of Harold Ramis's talent as I don't know how this dialogue was ever created in the first place. The humor is so distilled that it lasts for nearly 100 minutes.Other than some of the Kenny Loggins background music, this film is close to being perfect.

5-0 out of 5 stars Among the Funniest Films Ever Made...
Al: "Let's go, while we're young"
Judge Smails: "Do you mind Sir, I'm trying to tee-off"
Al: "I'll bet ya 50 bucks you slice into the woods"
Judge Smails: "Gambling is illegal at Bushwood and I never slice"
    (Ball Slices into the woods)
    Judge Smails: "DAMN!!!!!!!!!"
Al: "OK, you can owe me"
Judge Smails: "I OWE YOU NOTHING!"

Caddyshack is the funniest film I have ever seen. 25 years after it's theatrical release, I still find myself quoting lines from this film ad nauseum. What Caddyshack boils down to is the right cast and the right script at the right time. The cast is unrivaled. Chevy Chase, Rodney Dangerfield, Bill Murray and Ted Knight give Caddyshack an ensemble feel. Ted Knight's Judge Smails is my personal favorite as the ultra right wing conservative judge. Some of his lines are hilarious:

Danny: "I was hoping to go to college but unfortunately it looks like my parents aren't going to be able to afford to send me"

Judge Smails: "Well, the world needs ditch diggers too"

    OR

Spaulding: "I want a hamburger, no a cheeseburger, I want french fries..."

Judge Smails: "YOU'LL GET NOTHING AND LIKE IT!!!"

Rodney Dangerfield turns in a star-making performance as Al Czervik, a crude, crass construction developer who upsets the balance of power at Bushwood by bringing his blue collar ways with him. Dangerfield is the KING of one-liners:

Al: "Hey honey you must have been something before electricity...How'd you like to make 14 bucks the hard way"

    OR

Al: "Hey Wang, what's with the pictures its a parking lot...Wang, I think this is a restricted club so don't tell 'em you're Jewish."

    OR

Al: "Oh, this is worst looking hat, I've ever seen, I mean you buy a hat like that you ought to get a free bowl of soup with it...(looking at Smails who is wearing the hat)...but it looks good on you"

Chevy Chase and Bill Murray are hilarious. Murray's Carl Spackler may be the most quoted sports movie character of all-time. Chase's Ty Webb has some great one-liners too, but my favorite scene with him is during the final match when Ty puts his arm around Judge Smails and starts blowing in his ear. As you can tell, I could go on and on about this movie it's just that good. The bottom line for Caddyshack is this: BUY IT, WATCH IT (REPEATEDLY) and WORSHIP IT. Highest Recommendation.

    Editorial Review

Nickelodeon's SpongeBob SquarePants has become so popular, it must be considered a phenomenon. The series has a pleasant, predictable, and slightly offbeat humor, and these mini-adventures give viewers what they expect. SpongeBob has to deal with a ghostly pirate, his own insecurities when his skill as a preparer of krabby patties is challenged, and the dangerous pleasures of fisherman's hooks. The voice acting is often amateurish and imitative. Patrick suggests a Homer Simpson-wannabe, while Bubble Bass sounds like the Comic Book Guy. The humor can become gross. In episode No. 2, SpongeBob absorbs a bathtub full of water, then vomits it at Gary, the snail who acts as his dog. But it seems pointless to grumble about these weaknesses. SpongeBob SquarePants has clearly won a place in the hearts of American viewers. (Suitable for ages 8 and older: cartoon violence, minor gross-out humor) --Charles Solomon ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars One thing that i do not like about the DVD
This is my favorite spongebob DVD! i give it 4 stars because of the "Shanghied" Stupidness. There are 3 different endings but you have to watch the entire episiode each time you pick a different ending, that sucks, other than that nice collection of spongebob at his greatest!

4-0 out of 5 stars Editorial disagreement
Charles, mate, can I just correct you on a few things? Thanks...
PREDICTABLE HUMOUR: How can humour simultaneously be "predictable" and "offbeat"? One of the great things about the series as a whole is that unexpected lines often come out- often tailored to the more mature audiences. (hang on, mature? I'm watching a cartoon...oh well)
AMATEURISH VOCAL ACTING: Ok, that's why many of the vocal actors have won awards as well as acclaim for their talents then?! Tom Kenny (Spongebob) also appears in such greats as Johnny Bravo and more.Clancy Brown (Mr. Krabs) even played the fearsome captain in 'The Shawshank Redemption' -hardly an amateur. There are talents too numerous to account for here -check the awards pages for vocal actiong.
GROSS-OUT:? Actually, the creator, Steve Hillenburg studied Marine Studies at uni, so what you might think of as "vomiting" is funnily enough a natural process in actual sponges, being porous and squeezy and all..He sticks to some facts rigidly!
GARY THE DOG: ? Do dogs meow? Cos I thought that was cats. 2ndly, Gary is much more intelligent than Spongebob and often offers advice and guidance to 'Bob's whims.
OVERALLL: Watch it again, Charles, and I'm sure you'll love it as much as the rest if us! Best episode on this DVD is 'Sailor Mouth'!This DVD collation has weaknesses, but that's probably 'cos it's half aimed at kids and half at adults. You're never going to get the ideal, but Spongebob is something I can watch all day if my diary demands nothing else...and enjoy. I can't wait to be the only person under 30 in the cinema in November!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Insanely Funny! (but a word of advice...)
'Sea Stories' is the most popular compilation of episodes of Nickelodeon's cartoon hit, SpongeBob Squarepants.

The VHS edition contains five episodes, all of which are insanely funny:
-"Shanghaied", where SpongeBob and his team deal with the ghost pirate The Flying Dutchman, driving him up the walls of his patience with their nonsense.
-"Gary Takes A Bath", an instant classic that can make many parents feel identified, as SpongeBob goes through lots of hoops in an effort to try to get his pet Gary to take a bath... the best of all the episodes!
-"Hooky" - SpongeBob and Patrick have fun playing with the hooks from fishermen, in somewhat of a "bungee-like" fashion, jumping off of them before they get pulled out of the water, until SpongeBob learns his lesson.
-"Life of Crime" - another very funny episode where SpongeBob and his 'partner in crime' Patrick run away after the ballom they borrowed (because it was "okay to borrow things") pops and they feel they're going to be put into jail for having stolen a baloon.
-"Pickles", a hilarious face-to-face between SpongeBob and Bubble Bath makes him loose his self-confidence as a chef when he's accused of having forgotten to put pickles in his locally "famous" krabby patty.

While all the episodes contain fairly innocent humor (that parents and everyone alike will laugh to) when compared to other past cartoons (such as "Ren and Stimpy"), I'd advice parents to stick around when your children watch SpongeBob. He can provide you with some valuable tools to get your children to understand certain things, but by the same token, he can twist some things that might later complicate matters (making certain things confusing in their minds), considering the easy way in which the kids connect to the character. All in all, far from a bad influence and very funny. The only aside: just keep an eye on the kids and talk to them about the episodes, if you feel it is appropriate. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars CHRISTMAS
A touch of christmas in July a super DVD. This DVD is full of fun episodes!

5-0 out of 5 stars "...And everybody pretends to like the fruitcake...YAWN"
Spongebob Squarepants Christmas lives up to the lofty standards that this show has set for itself. Patchy the pirate introduces the first double length short "Christmas Who?" which is hilarious. The basic premise is that Spongebob and the rest of Bikini Bottom is unaware of the holiday until Sandy clues Spongebob in. Spongebob then spreads holiday joy by encouraging everyone to write a letter to Santa and wait for his impending arrival. Squidward, as always, is skeptical but winds up saving the day in the end. Overall, this is one of Squidward's funniest shorts, he has some classic one-liners such as "Oh, I see a perfect photo-op" or "Yep, I'm insane". You just cannot find a consistently funnier show than this and Spongebob Christmas lives up to the hype. Highly Recommended.

3-0 out of 5 stars 5 star content!3 Stars cause "best ofs" are so yesterday!
The second Holiday to be represented in the collection of "themed" Spongebob DVDs, "Christmas", includes another 10 episodes (one is double the length) of pure aquatic fun!You may ask why I gave it three stars then?Only because there is a better way to obtain Spongebob on DVD and in his entirety - Season Sets!As a stand alone DVD, you can't say much bad about any of the compilation discs of Spongebob, but the fact that the complete season sets are being released makes them less special than they used to be, unecessary really."Christmas", like the previous "Halloween" collection includes only one episode actually set on the holiday, in this case the double length "Christmas Who?" where Santa decides not to show on Christmas in Bikini Bottom. The only other two even closely related are "Snowball Effect" and "Survival of the Idiots" because of snow basically. It doesn't really matter because all the episodes are great.Watch as Spongebob sells candy bars with Patrick, gets lost with Squidward, and annoys everyone (more than usual!) with a pair of very squeaky boots!Like I said the content is first rate and the casual fan won't be disappointed, but if you're feeling extra wiggly and I know you are, go get the Season sets! That way you get all the Spongebob you can handle!

    "Christmas" episodes:
    01. Christmas Who? (2 episode length)
    02. Procrastination
    03. Snowball Effect
    04. Survival of the Idiots

Bill Murray plays a hip camp counselor at a summer facility for geeky kids and assorted losers. Murray's brand of ironic comedy feels grafted onto this banal and sentimental 1979 celebration of misfits. The comedian's frequent director, Ivan Reitman (Ghostbusters), was still finding his sea legs with this one, and he nearly convinced everyone at the time that Murray's film career was never going to happen. --Tom Keogh ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Where's Chris Makepeace now???
I love this movie, and did when I first saw it as a kid.Upon repeated viewings, I miss actors like Chris Makepeace, along with the humanity that Bill Murray's character displays.Though this movie is funny, and fun to watch, what gets to me now is the vibe or the undercurrent of the film.It has a gentle quality (human) that you practically never see in movies of the last 20 years or so.Along with 'My Bodyguard', I think Chris Makepeace (nearly) created a type of character that came and went very quickly, just like his acting career, and yet, to those of us who remember him, left an indelible impression.Although it might sound stupid, nostalgic, and sentimental, I'm glad he (and 'Meatballs') did what he did, the way that he did it.As someone who got picked on a lot as kid, I KNOW just what his characters were feeling, and what it's like to have a Tripper-like father figure to watch out and protect you.For these reasons, this is my favorite Bill Murray movie, and definitely worth owning.

5-0 out of 5 stars Humor and compassion
Murray's interactions with the boy are so good that I used excerpts from the film for a final exam on basic counseling I taught at a graduate school - the students had to identify the techniques used by Tripper and suggest alternatives. This may be a far more educational portrayal of counseling than any of the wierd therapist-involved movies Hollywood has produced over the past decade.

Beyond all that, this is a film of good-natured humor that has sympathy for its characters. Among the very best things that Bill Murray ever did.

And where is Tripper today when we need him?

5-0 out of 5 stars The Strength of this movie is in the Characters.
The combination of Bill Murray, Ivan Reitman, and Harold Ramis is well known among movie fans."Ghostbusters", "Ghostbusters II", and "Stripes" are three well known movies among this combination that featured Murray's acting, Reitman's Directing, and Ramis' writing (as well as acting). However the movie that started it all for them was a low budget, but highly successful Canadian filmed comedy called "Meatballs". This movie basically tells the story of an Sleep-away Camp named Camp North Star and all of the hijinks involving both the Campers and the Counselors.

There are two main plots involving the story of Camp North Star. The first involves the Head Counselor Tripper Harrison's (played by Bill Murray) relationship with a Camper by the name of Rudy Gerner (played by Chris Makepeace).Rudy is ostracized by several of the other campers and finds a friend in Tripper. The two will grow and learn from each other as the summer progresses. The other main plot involves Camp North Star's rivalry with a High Class Elite Camp named Camp Mohawk. These two plots will actually converge when the two Camps meet in a two day Olympiad Competition at the end of the movie.

Revolving around the two main plots are several subplots, hijinks, pranks, and one liners. There are subplots that explore some of the romantic entanglements of the Counselors. The most interesting ones are:Tripper trying to rekindle a relationship with the Head Girls Counselor, Roxanne (played by Kate Lynch); A nerdy Camp Counselor named Spaz (played by Jack Blum) and a Female Jock named Jackie (played by Margot Pinvidic); Two blonde haired Counselors - Crockett (Played by Russ Banham and Candace (played by Sarah Torgov). There are also some interesting events that take place at the camp such as The Olympiad, An Overnight Campout by the Counselors, a Counselors Social a Basketball Camp with Camp Mohawk, and Parents Day.These events do a great job at helping to shape the movie.

However the real strength of this movie is in the characters. These are characters that you can easily relate to.The Counselors almost seem like people you'd hang out with when you were in your late teens.I also think the theme of the "underdog" that is prevalent throughout the movie helps in the audience being able to relate to these characters. Bill Murray is really the only name movie star in this film. Another character who has been seen is Harvey Atkin.Atkin plays Morty, the beleaguered Camp Director, who is victim to multiple pranks and hijinks throughout the movie - providing for some of the funniest moments in "Meatballs". Most people will probably remember Atkin from the TV Series "Cagney and Lacey" in which he played Desk Sergeant Ronald Coleman.Besides Tripper and Morty, the other stars (who aren't well known names do a tremendous job at building their characters throughout the movie. The characters that stand out include:

    - Roxanne - the Headstrong Head Girls Counselor who is a great balance to the goofy Tripper
    - Spaz - a complete geek, but as he gets a chance with a relationship with Jackie - you can't help but root for him to succeed.
    - Larry a.k.a. "Fink" (played by Keith Knight) - the chubby Counselor who has some hilarious moments when his pants are run up the flagpole and when he beats "The Stomach" in the Olympiad Hot Dog Eating Contest;
    - Hardware (played by Matt Craven) - the Counselor who is a whiz at "handyman" stuff - who when hooking up an air conditioner knocks all of the electricity out of Camp North Star.
    - Rudy - The Kid who we all can relate to as. When Rudy runs the marathon in the last event of the big Olympiad, you can't help but root for him.
Also worh mentioning are Crockett, Candace, Jackie, Phil,A.L., Wendy, and Wheels.

The one liners are also a key to this film. There are plenty of times where you are going to want to stop the film and listen to the line again. Some of these highlights include:

    - "Hi Mickey!" - what everyone says to Morty whenever Morty introduces himself.
    - "An Air Conditioner just doesn't pick itself up and walk away" - Morty to Jackie and Tripper when he learns his air conditioner is missing.
    - "I thought you said you had it Meat Ball" - Fink to Spaz while they are playing doubles tennis against Jackie and another girl
    - "Spaz, You're on your Way" - Fink to Spaz after Spaz tells him he held Jackie's hand.
    - "It just doesn't matter!" - Tripper's rally cry at Morty's Olympiad rally.
    - "Spaz! Spaz! Spaz!" - What the North Star teams says to Spaz as he is in the Olympiad Stacking Contest.
    - "Come on Morty! Make up your Mind" - Tripper to Morty when they are trying to decide whether Rudy should run the marathon.

The music is fun in this movie.Three great songs include David Naughton's "Makin' It",the Opening Song "Are You Ready for the Summer?", and Rick Dees' title song "Meatballs". They all fit in perfectly to the film.

Finally, the hijinks are also key to this movie. Some of these highlights include:
    - "Operation Late Night Excitement" - on Morty!
    - The hijaking of Morty's Air Conditioner
    - The final play at the Camp Mohawk Basketball game
    - Spaz and Fink eavesdropping under the Female Counselor's Cabin

I do think all of these factors added up to a real enjoyable film.Even 25 years later, I still enjoy this film as much as when it was in the theaters. There were several sequels that were made to this movie.I would call these sequels "loose sequels" at best.None capture any of the charm that made this movie up.One should note is there is some foul language and sexual references. But ultimately this is a very funny movie - highly recommended. ... Editorial Review

Lucky for Eddie Murphy he got ahold of the rights to this 1963 Jerry Lewis classic before Jim Carrey did.Murphy had a comeback of sorts with his Jeckyll-and-Hyde-derived fable of awkward chemistry professor Sherman Klump (Murphy), who discovers a potion that transforms him into the suave, cocky lady-killer Buddy Love (also Murphy). The big difference between the two versions is that Murphy's Sherman is not only a nerdy intellectual but is also grossly obese, which provides the opportunity for some hilarious digital transformation effects, as well as some gentle satire of our culture's attitudes toward fat people. As he did in the hit Coming to America, Murphy plays multiple roles, and the scenes at the Klump family dinner table, in which he plays everybody, are brilliantly funny.(Murphy won the National Society of Film Critics' award for best actor of 1996 for these performances.)Lewis based his Buddy Love on the 1960s ideal of cool exemplified by Sinatra and the Rat Pack; Murphy stumbles a bit by playing up the oily phoniness of his latter-day Love a little too soon, but for the most part The Nutty Professor represents a welcome return to form for Eddie Murphy. --Jim Emerson ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Ohhhhh Hercules! Hercules!
    This film is hilarious.
A 400 pound man is tired of being overweight, so he decides to create a potion that, when consumed, turns him into a slim, attractive man.
Things get out of control as his new "alter ego" (the slim, attractive guy) tries to take over his body.

Eddie Murphy did a wonderful job playing over 8 roles that he was hired for. If you're ever bored, check this one out.

4-0 out of 5 stars good film.
This is a good movie, the remake of the nutty professor. Lets face it, who wants to see anold black and white film(unless your my grandpa)? This version is much better and funnier. Its about this guy who is a professor/ lab scientist who creates a meaner but much thinner version of himself, to get this girl(Jada Pinkett, which is super hot) to like him, but he soon finds out, that Buddy is a bad guy and stops him forever. Buy it, its pretty good.

4-0 out of 5 stars Eddie at his best
Eddie Murphy is definitely one of the undisputed kings of comedy. He's so hilarious. He's definitely phenomenal. THE NUTTY PROFESSOR really is a good movie. The scene with Dave Chapelle in da club is real hilarious esp when Eddie went back to show him who has been the game for long. ... Read more

    Editorial Review

William Steig's delightfully fractured fairy tale is the right stuff for this computer-animated adaptation full of verve and wit. Our title character (voiced by Mike Myers) is an agreeable enough ogre who wants to live his days in peace. When the diminutive Lord Farquaad (John Lithgow) evicts local fairy-tale creatures (including the now-famous Seven Dwarfs, Pinocchio, and the Gingerbread Man), they settle in the ogre's swamp and Shrek wants answers from Farquaad. A quest of sorts starts for Shrek and his new pal, a talking donkey (Eddie Murphy), where battles have to be won and a princess (Cameron Diaz) must be rescued from a dragon lair in a thrilling action sequence. The story is stronger than most animated fare, but it's the humor that makes Shrek a winner. The PG rating is stretched when Murphy and Myers hit their strides. The mild potty humor is fun enough for 10-year-olds but will never embarrass their parents. Shrek is never as warm and inspired as the Toy Story films, but the realistic computer animation and a rollicking soundtrack keep the entertainment in fine form. Produced by DreamWorks, the film also takes several delicious stabs at its crosstown rival, Disney. --Doug Thomas ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars I know I'm in the minority...
I remember walking into the theatre four years ago to see Shrek. The first time I saw it, I laughed my poor head off.I dubbed it the 'funniest movie ever'.Stupid me swore I was going to see it again someday.

Well, last night, my aunt rented 'Shrek', and popped it into our DVD player.I was sure I was going to be thrilled.Well, then I realized, halfway through the film, that 'Shrek' was one of those gems you see once, but never want to see again.I used to adore 'Shrek', but now, I can see that it was basically nothing but a whole whollop of fart jokes, in-your-face remarks, a predictable plot (I predicted it even before I saw it for the first time)and tasteless humour thrown together, and sent off as a movie.

What is with the 'happily-ever-after' ending?I am so sick of that tongue-in-cheek 'happily-ever-after' ending! Why can't people these days come up with an actually creative, realistic ending?

Well, then, what else must I complain about?Oh, yes, the jokes.I get them. They're just not funny.Like I said, they're tasteless.

And as for Donkey, he's funny, but I think the filmmakers were too lazy to give him a name.Way to show some respect to a beloved character! (sarcasm)

And the greatest fall for DreamWorks: turning Princess Fiona into an ogre.

I have a bite to pick with this.It was 'cute' at first, and it was 'interesting', but only because it was so unique.

What's the problem?Princess Fiona had a spell put on her.According to this spell, she was to become a hideous ogre every night until she found her true love. Then she'd be beautiful all the time. Now, Fiona found true love, with Shrek. How sweet. (Not sarcasm) It would've been great to have the princess and Shrek get married. But not in this case. Why so?Princess Fiona was turned into an ogre. The filmmakers should've kept it that way!

I mean, come on!I'm sure we'd all get the message that it's prefectly fine to be ugly with Princess Fiona and Shrek getting married, and Shrek being kept as an ugly ogre, while the Princess was kept beautiful.BE YOURSELF!If Fiona had originally been an ugly monster, then that would be great. But she was born a beautiful princess, and the filmmakers should've kept her that way: beautiful on the outside, but a lovely ogre on the inside.

And psychologists are telling us that we should appreciate our appearance for what our appearance is, and ourselves for what we are.Perfect.You don't need an appearance that reflects on who you are just to be beautiful.Princess Fiona does not need to look like an ogre to live with one (and to act like one).

Don't get me wrong: it would've been just as bad if Shrek had turned into a handsome prince because he married Fiona.

I will point out in Shrek 2, Shrek became a handsome man, but then was willingly turned back into an ogre. That was good: Shrek kept himself the way he was.He didn't have to 'adapt' to being handsome to make Fiona happy.

For some strange reason, the exact opposite was true for Fiona when she became an ogre. Was it because she is a woman?Or was it because the film was trying to say that it's not okay to beautiful, but okay to be ugly? That's just as wrong as sayingit's wrong to beautful, but not okay to be ugly.'Shrek' is not 'better' than traditional fairy tales: just different. But the basic concept is the same: it's okay to have one appearance, but not the other.

Don't get me wrong: if Shrek had become a handsome prince as a result of marrying Fiona, it would've been just as bad.

And Shrek, I do not know about you, but if villagers hate you because of your appearance, I don't think it helps to eat them.

Of course, this movie has its 'up sides'.I give it two stars for great character development, wonderful animation, and a 'unique' twist from the traditional fairy tales, but I'm afraid I can't be any kinder than that.Sorry.

1-0 out of 5 stars omg
I hated this film I think it should go into the hall of shame. Yes it was funny in some parts but it was very annoying.

the onion is really great. i've never read an issue that didn't crack me up. it's the news with a comical twist. i could always pick up a free copy in nyc but i just subscribe to it because it's totally worth it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Funny and More
The Onion is famous for its current-events and popular culture satires, which are consistently spot-on.The brash sense of humor and subtle insights into the personalities and issues being addressed makes this magazine worth its admittedly hefty subscription rate. The magazine contains more material than the website, so you definitely want to get your hot little hands on the paper edition.

But the humor isn't even the largest part of the magazine, just the front. The Onion A.V. Club takes up most of each issue, with in-depth articles on current movies, music, books, personalities, and more.It has a distinctly New York-oriented bent, as given away by things like concert listings for NYC, but most of it is applicable to the avant-garde and the hip-n-happening nationwide.

This magazine is an emblem of its age.Get it, read it, study it, and inject it directly into your bloodstream. Then you'll never wonder what's REALLY going on in the world around you again.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Best Journalistic Satire Ever Put To Paper
When the satire in MAD Magazine™ ain't quite doin' the trick, I turn to The Onion™'s unbelievably hilarious write-ups that take shots at just about everything & everybody you can imagine. From the complex intricacies of geek culture (Nate Orenstam's Op-Ed "Who Says Java Programmers Don't Have A Sense of Humor?"), "local" stories ("Church Group Offers Homosexual New Life In Closet"), and world events ("India's Top Physicists Develop Plan To Get The Hell Out of India"), no one is safe from the satirical wrath and wit of this weekly publication! Offtimes, just the titles of the articles alone (like "Adam Sandler Fans Disappointed By Intelligent, Nuanced Performance") send me into fits of barely-controllable laughter (My personal fave: "Special Olympics Tee-Ball Stand Pitches Perfect Game")! And funnier still is the fact that some folks and governmental agencies from around the world have read some of these fine little bits of journalistic parody and mistook them for actual news pieces!

If you wish to see a preview of what you can expect from "America's Finest News Source"™, check out the online edition at TheOnion.com. But just so you know, the web site features only part of the content that's available in the corresponding print edition. If you wanna get it all, you're gonna hafta subscribe...

5-0 out of 5 stars Parody Central
There are a few written sources of parody and satire available in the United States; "The Onion," "Cracked" and "National Lampoon" are all sources of both.Of the three, "National Lampoon" is a relatively sophisticated magazine that started with a largely college audience and retains its college focus today, though its movies appeal to a much wider audience."The Onion" is a newspaper type format that tends to be less subtle than "National Lampoon."Both "The Onion" and "National Lampoon" contain graphic art, but are principally article-based.

"Cracked" and "Mad" are both graphic based.Of the two, I have seen descriptions of "Cracked" that included phrases such as "low-budget Mad Magazine."Unfortunately, for a short time "Cracked" even suspended production. On the other hand, "Mad" has been around continuously since the mid-50s, and while its affect on readers is reduced from the days when its views were often seen as at least controversial, its readership remains high along with the magazine's ability to keep a good level of humor.

Original editor William Gaines's desire was that "Mad" not accept any advertising to allow the magazine to satirize anyone without fear of reprisal. The magazine kept this tradition until relatively recently, when it began accepting a limited number of advertisements.About the same time the magazine also started using color in portions. The addition of color was enjoyable. The acceptance of advertisements remains concerning, though I have yet to see any real affect on "Mad's" satires and parodies.

Many of "Mad's" features have existed for decades. The miniature cartoons in the margins have existed as long as I have read "Mad," which is back into the 60s."Spy vs. Spy," the fold-in at the back of the magazine, and "A Look at the Lighter Side of..." have all been long running features.More recently the magazine has added "Monroe," and "The Fundalini Pages," which combines and reduces some previous features along with the addition of new elements, as regular features.

One of the best features of "Mad" remains poking fun at current television shows and movies. While "Mad" is limited to poking fun at one or two movies per month, usually the selected movies were popular either with audiences or the critics and thus likely to be a movie that readers would recognize."Harry Potter," "Star Wars," "Star Trek," and "The Godfather" are just a small sample of the hundreds of movies that have been honored by a "Mad Magazine" parody. There are a few clunkers in the pantheon of parodies portrayed in "Mad," nearly every one has at least a few good one-liners and most can cause at least a good chuckle, if not an outright laugh.Similarly, the most popular television shows get their turn, and the characteristics of each show are satirized to a usually humorous extreme.

The official mascot of "Mad" remains Alfred E. Newman, the perennially freckle-faced "What, me worry?" representative of the general silliness of us, if we only look at ourselves properly. As others in numerous locations have point out, there are a variety of famous people who bear a remarkable likeness to Alfred E. Newman, and more than one of those famous characters depicted in "Mad" have had their features manipulated ever so subtly to enhance that resemblance.I will leave it to the reader to discover who those famous people might be.

"Mad Magazine" is probably the oldest continuous source of parody and satire available."Mad" has inspired artists, writers, and imitators.I found it to be a fun magazine as a teenage boy and to my surprise I found that reading it today nearly 40 years after my first exposure to "Mad" is almost as enjoyable as it was then.As with any magazine of any type, especially a magazine attempting to be humorous, there are jokes that fall flat, and occasionally jokes that are sufficiently obscure to leave some readers wondering what was funny, but most jokes are readily understandable. Some will bring a groan because they are so bad. Some will bring a "ewwwww" because they are "potty humor."But there are real gems among the jokes that will bring a smile to your face, and occasionally a laugh that must be out loud."Mad Magazine" is a wonderful way to put a uniquely graphic and humorous spin on the events occurring around us.I hope that I will always be able to appreciate the humor that the magazine attempts to portray, and that I never take life too seriously.

4-0 out of 5 stars Funny stuff!
I bought an issue of MAD on the newsstand last July. I really liked it but my mum thought the subscription price was too much. They should lower it a bit. It makes me laugh every time I pick it up. However, I reccomend it for the 13 and older crowd because it has some humor that kids won't get a/o their parents wont want them to see.

5-0 out of 5 stars Don't Skip a Single Word
Among the magazines I read (The New Yorker, The Economist, Atlantic Monthly, blah blah blah), Funny Times is the only one I read cover to cover. I start at the beginning and read it straight through, without skipping a word. I don't want to miss anything!

There are columns by Will Durst, Jim Hightower, Dave Barry, Andy Borowitz, and cartoons -- Tom the Dancing Bug, Too Much Coffee Man, Ted Rall, The K Chronicles.

The only bad thing I can say about Funny Times is that the ink comes off on your fingers, just like a regular newspaper. So keep a bottle of hand sanitizer nearby when you read it.

    Editorial Review

Recovering from the box-office disappointment of The Cable Guy, Jim Carrey gave his fans what they wanted in this good-natured and frequently hilarious 1997 comedy. In a vehicle tailor-made for his verbal and physical antics, Carrey plays a lawyer whose penchant for prevarication is tested when his son makes a birthday wish that his father would tell the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth for 24 hours, so help him God! Without his daily defense of white lies, selfish fibs, and outright deception, the helpless lawyer finds himself blurting uncensored truths with total, and totally outrageous, candor. The script is clever enough to milk the premise for all it's worth, but it's Carrey's energy--particularly in a hilarious bathroom scene where he literally mugs himself to delay a trial--that keeps the movie going to its sappy happy ending. The supporting cast includes Jennifer Tilly, Cary Elwes, and Amanda Donohoe. --Jeff Shannon ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars WRONG!!!-THIS IS JIM CARREY'S FUNNIEST MOVIE!
I have NEVER laughed harder than I did, and still do, when I watch(ed) LIAR LIAR.Yes, it's stupid and syrupy at times, and does get hypocritical in regard to being happy without money (as in Jim Carrey makes mucho millions yet plays a character that ends up saying money won't make you happy), but, SO WHAT-IT'S ONLY A MOVIE!There are so many hysterical scenes here that I don't even know where to begin. My dad doesn't care for Jim Carrey, but even he had to admit that this movie made him laugh out loud, repeatedly. There are so many memorable lines and scenes that I feel this is a modern day classic. His timing with this material is perfect throughout. If there is a weakness, its the ending. The courtroom win is great, as well as the scene where he goes to jail for contempt of court ("Yeah, tell that to them when they're adopted-by the Manson Family!!!).But the movie runs out of gas too soon, as the airport scenes feel out of place, not blending smoothly like everything else. The final scene is cute (bringing 'The Claw' back is a nice touch) but there's no chemistry between Maura Tierney and Jim Carrey.I find it impossible to believe they would have been together in the first place, much less have gotten back together in the end.But it doesn't matter. The journey is where this movie earns its 5 stars, and Carrey's performance, along with a solid script and crisp direction, makes LIAR LIAR a comedy classic.

4-0 out of 5 stars SUPER FUNNY!
I saw this movie in the theater when it came out, and everyone
loved it, including me! Easily one of my favorite Jim Carrey
movies. Lawyers will get a kick out of this movie!

1-0 out of 5 stars What's wrong with everyone who gave four star reviews.
I don't see how anyone could give this movie four stars.Carry crossed the line here.his charecter is repulsive, the jokes do not work, and the point that this movie seems to make is not something I will dignify with comment. This movie is tasteless trash and that's it. ... Read more

    Editorial Review

Pitting kids against grown-ups has always been a reliable source of comedy, and Big Fat Liar indulges the "smart kid vs. dumb adult" fantasy with infectious enthusiasm. In this case it's Frankie Muniz from TV's Malcolm in the Middle, playing a Michigan eighth-grader whose penchant for lying results in parental scorn when he claims that a Hollywood movie mogul (ace character actor Paul Giamatti) has stolen the kid's hastily written English essay and turned it into his upcoming summer blockbuster. The kid only wants to prove his honesty and recruits his girlfriend (spunky TV star Amanda Bynes) to beat the honcho on his Hollywood turf. Elaborate practical jokes and slapstick gags turn this kid stuff (scripted and produced by two former child stars) into an enjoyable send-up of Hollywood absurdity. When combined with Giamatti's mastery of slow-burning megalomania, the show-biz in-jokes and Home Alone-style anarchy make this a harmless diversion for the young and young-at-heart. --Jeff Shannon ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Big Fat Liar (2002)
What can I say? I'm not much of a Muniz fan at all.
Besides this film, I'd say his other great film would be My Dog Skip. Skip the rest.

This movie was absolutely hilarious. It was non stop laughs after they set it up. The perfect combination of actors young and old I was very Impressd. For a comedy this is at the top. I could get into the principle the message and a few other things that makes this movie great but I'd rather stick to it being just fun entertainment.

5-0 out of 5 stars Big Fat Liar is Big Fat Fun!
This is (right now) my favorite comedy and it's so good! The plot is unique and interesting, and my two favorite actor and actresses, Frankie Muniz (Agent Cody Banks) and Amanda Bynes (What a Girl Wants) are in it!
The Plot: Jason (Muniz) is a boy who lies a lot. After lying his way out from getting into trouble for not writing an English essay and getting found out, his teacher gives him a change to write his English essay again and pass it out at 6 that evening. If not, he will have to go to summer school.
Jason finishes the paper (which is titled Big Fat Liar) and on the way to school, he accidentally hits into a car. In the car is a famous Hollywood producer, Marty Wolf (Paul Giamatti). Jason gets a ride but then he forgets his paper inside the car. Jason's English teacher thinks he's lying and he has to go to summer school.
Meanwhile, Marty Wolf uses Jason's story's plot for his new movie. Jason sees a preview of it and gets angry. With his best friend Kaylee (Bynes), he goes to Hollywood and plays a couple of pranks on Wolf that make him give back the paper. This is the best part in the movie. ^_^
I'm not saying what happens at the end, but anyway, this movie is really good and funny. A very good family film.

4-0 out of 5 stars Don't Underestimate this Movie!
Okay, I'll admit that before I watched this movie, I thought it was going to be completely stupid and idiotic. Then I watched it and I thought hey this is pretty okay! Most people (especially adults) see a preview for a movie like this and they just say 'ugh, more stupid movies.' But despite the reputations of the main characters, this is pretty good. It's hilarious, don't get me wrong, but this movie really shows the determination of a teenage boy trying to follow his dreams. ... Read more
