5-0 out of 5 stars Good stuff- what we expect from Clay Caldwell.
Good basic one-handed reading. Clay does a very good job at sex scenes. If I have any complaint, it be that the stories are a bit longer and drawn out and don't finish' so soon.... ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars not bad but not great
I'm afraid I don't get all the hype over this book. It was ok but I found it all so predictable right from the start that there wasn't much of a reason to continue to the end. As soon as Burke enters the scene it is obvious he is going to hurt Nathan. How about a twist? Dad does something good? Nathan does something evil? I know, it wasn't that kind of novel but to be spoon fed from page one to page two hundred is a bit much.

5-0 out of 5 stars What a masterpiece
I loved this book!I wanted to live with Roy and Nathan forever - they were beautiful characters in different ways.I cried but then became comforted at the ending.I REALLY needed Nathan to find Roy again (I was so grieved)!!!What a wonderful journey this book was!!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Heartrenching
For me, along with Marilyne Robinson's "Housekeeping," this book is the most beautifully written, heartfelt I have ever read.My reaction was so similar to other reviewers who posted here, I don't know if I have anything new to add. However, I feel so strongly about this book that I am compelled to contribute my opinion anyway.I, too, read "Dream Boy" in one sitting and, upon finishing, felt bereft, devastated for days afterward. The book's power derives not merely from the fairly simple, straightforward story, but from the writing itself which is positively transcendent.Mr. Grimsley works magic, at once exercising incredible brevity while achieving a kind of quiet poetry with his carefully chosen words.A boy's body, arching toward his lover, is described as a "curve of yearning," and at their first touch, the other boy, "...makes one sound, throaty and startled, like an animal giving a single warning." Spare, sensual, erotic, yet strangely disquieting.

Grimsley manages to create an aura of wonderment, joy even, in the boys' sexual discovery while at the same time running an undercurrent of dread through the entire slim volume, foreshadowing the book's heartrenching climax.Interestingly, although I suspect most people misinterpreted or simply missed this, Grimsley provides several clues strongly suggesting that it's jealousy, not homophopia that precipitates the story's inevitable, horrifying tragedy. The final nine chapters, some as brief as half a page, present a spiritual, open ended denouement that offers a whisper of hope for those of us still haunted and despairing.

4-0 out of 5 stars Captures the mood
If you are looking for a trucking book with lots of pictures of trucks, this is not for you, however if you want a photographic pictorial book which captures the mood of truckstops and the variety of patrons who frequent them, this is a worthwhile addition to your library.

5-0 out of 5 stars A great pictorial work
This book truley captures the life of an average truck driver. It shows the experiences of the road and best of all the truck stops. The truck stops are wonderfully photographed. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars not for the squeemish
Anyone who isn't actively involved with (either practicing, getting or wanting) the HEAVY body mod scene definitely shouldn't buy, read or look at this book.

It documents hard modifications such as tongue splitting, 3d/transdermal implants, subincisions, penectomies, glansectomies, scarificaion, etc.

The book has alot of photographs and articles on the subjects listed and is a great book to have for anyone interested, however the articles are seriously lacking perosnal experiences in some cases. The book is definitely not worth the nearly $200 listed above. I got mine from bmeshop.com for $29.99

There is a DVD (that I have) that accompanies this book (also sold at bmevideo.com) that documents hardcore procedures at the actual ModCon.

ModCon2 book also in the works.

5-0 out of 5 stars absolutely incredible...
as the title suggests i thought this book was amazing - i felt that the photography was very raw and well done. the book also helps to dispell some of the ignorance people may have about extreme body modification by actually giving you a look inside some of the people who participate in these activities allowing you to see the passion this community has for its art... i myself am a part of the piercing community so my affinity was only heightened and enlightened by this book.not to take away from amazon.com as i am an avid customer but u can also find this book through its direct source on bmezine.com along with finding more information on body modification.

2-0 out of 5 stars High hopes, grounded.
This book had a lot of potential, but was poorly executed. The book description boasts "containing comprehensive and informative information on the subject," but it's lacking severely in this area. I suppose I purchased this book in hopes that I would find a condensed version of some of BMEZine's articles, which are well thought out and full of information. This book read like a series of poorly pulled together magazine articles and often times, the photos occupying the articles were either misleading, misplaced or lacking any further explanation. What also disappointed me, and someone has touched on this before, any person who identifies themselves as a member of the "body modification community" can easily point out many of subjects in this book. These people are already well publicized and very vocal. Although they are extremely interesting, they no longer command my attention. This book was a letdown. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars I KNOW I SHOULDN'T SAY THIS, BUT...
OK, so I know this is tacky, and an Amazon.com monitor will probably take this post down, but I just left MEN (and FRESHMEN), where I served as Editor, and I wanted to say thanks to everyone who bought the magazine during my tenure. Reading these online reviews really warmed my heart, and made it all worthwhile. I had a blast putting the magazine(s) together each month--hey, I got paid to look at hot, naked guys all day, who could ask for more?

5-0 out of 5 stars Its raining men
I started looking at these mags back when I was in High School. Other reviews seem to compair this to Playgirl.Well I Have vies both for quite a while and think that there are big differences between the two.The photos in Men, seem to have more of a natural look to them. Playgirl does not seem to focus on the art of the male body. They seem to portry them as being way to cold and unfriendly. I would rather buy men magazines then Playgirl any day. Also, people like what they like. I feel that we also have way to many women magazines that are avail. of this nature. The male nude is very much a wonderful sight to see, that people seem very much ashamed of.

I love big penis and this magazine gives it all. I highly advise people to buy this magazine. If your like me and like to rub one off in the bathroom with a good looking man than i would tell you this is the one to buy. As I always say " YOU CAN'T BEAT IT" IF YOU KNOW WHAT IMEAN...........

5-0 out of 5 stars A must buy
I've been a subscriber of this magazine since it first issue back in September 1997, those days the magazine has just changed its name from Advocate Classified and tried to give a style look to the world of all-male erotica, with movies reviews, notices about the adult entertainment, a biweekly serial and great layouts, with time stared giving us more information and articules about everyday life.
In September 2000 the magazine became mothly instead of every two weeks and staring giving more information to combine the style of the gay man and theerotica industry.
To this day this magazine is still of one the best in its field, fantastic reviews, great pictures, personal acounts and insight articules about today hottest places makes it a must-read.

4-0 out of 5 stars Not the "Weekly Reader" of school days!
A subscription to "Unzipped" isn't wasted. Not only does the magazine, the definitive publication of gay news, offer lavish and sexually stimulating photo layouts (solo and couples), it is Playboy-esque in providing interviews with prominent gay leaders and entertainers and mainstream articles with a bend toward whatever the subject and its relationship to life as a gay man. Further, there are features about gay websites and where to get just about anything a gay person (or a daring married traditional couple) could want, from videos to personals to the toys the big boys play with. But the magazine's cornerstone is its pictorials, usually of almost-always great-looking guys with bods that send the libido (and certain body attachments) into overdrive, and both the solo and couple layouts leave nothing to the imagination. Beyond those blistering layouts that seldom (if ever) disappoint, though, the magazine has everything else, and the one-year subscription rate for this monthly publication is well worth it. It makes for a dandy companion on cold (and sweltering hot) lonely nights!

5-0 out of 5 stars Long Time Subscriber
I've been a subscriber since right before the days of Bel Ami. I've never regretted a single issue, nor the investment.

4-0 out of 5 stars Hot!
As a straight female I offer a unique perspective on this magazine.I think it's totally hot.I really like the fiction, and the guys are such cute young hotties! Some of them look a little "mean" for my taste - they look so challengingly at you, instead of invitingly, but then again, a lot of guys in porn look this way to me - this is normal for porn I guess.Very few, if any of them are over-beefed (too muscular), and some of them aren't muscular at all, which means nice variety. The fiction is my favorite of all the gay mags I've looked at - lots of first times, nothing really bizarre or violent.Overall a cool magazine.

5-0 out of 5 stars A good substitute

5-0 out of 5 stars Changes for the better
GENRE has taken a turn for the funny. There is no writing for writing's sake any more. The new team there has given it a hipper, savvier vibe.Plus there are freakin hot guys on the cover and throughout the magazine!

5-0 out of 5 stars GENRE is the best gay magazine in the US
Genre recently changed its logo and its editors. As a result, the magazine has improved 110%! Really interesting celebrity stories, a good mix of CD, movie and book reviews, lots of home product stuff, etc. The covers are HOT too. All in all, this magazine far surpasses OUT or Instinct as the only sophisticated, smart choice for gay male readers.

1-0 out of 5 stars I'm letting my subscription run out
The quality was never that good. It's always been a fluff magazine. Now, it has become worse!Irreverent information and gratuitiously half-dressed young men fill up this magazine. The articles are obviously written by amateurs and cover topics that NO ONE cares about.I'm not being facetious.I'm expressing my feelings on how the quality (or lack of) has decresed even further as the years have progressed. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Twists and Turns....
NAME GAMES is a fascinating and exciting addition to the Mark Manning Mysteries. The plot lines keep getting better and more complex. This particular book is replete with clues for the "wanna-be" slueth in all of us, and a careful reading will provide the reader with all he or she needs to "figure-it-out".Porn, sex, "outing", and murder all add up to a fun read.Don't miss this one.

4-0 out of 5 stars Welcome Back, Mark!
He's back and better than ever. Now firmly ensconsed as publisher a small Wisconsin town's newspaper and as his young cousin's guardian, Mark seems more settled than in past installments, but he's still as perceptive and exciting as ever. With long-time partner, Neil, in town as an architect overseeing the town press's plant, he's more present than ever, and it's nice to see how readily he and Thad (their ward) have formed a relationship, one that Mark's initially a little jealous of.Neil serves as a rock for Mark and Thad.

The town's leading miniature proprieter has organized a combo show-and-tell and seminar, and has lured the best in the business to serve as judge. When said judge is found dead, there is the initial shock, and annoying DA Harvey Kaiser looking for someone to convict, whatever the cost. The prime suspect? The town's sheriff, Doug Pierce, Mark's friend and a closeted gay man who was carrying on a torrid affair with the deceased.

The town's loyalties soon become divided.Add into the mix an upcoming obscenity trial with many political consequences.Craft has done an excellent job fleshing out these characters. You actually understand them, their insecurities and their strengths. He's also delivered a wide array of possible suspects and does good work making the actual villain NOT obvious.Isn't that nice for a change?Highly recommended.

5-0 out of 5 stars Absolutely Wonderful!Michael Craft has another winner here
Name Games is book four in the Mark Manning Series.Mark Manning is a newspaper publisher. He once again had to come to the rescue and solve a murder. This time, there were many suspects, including the Sheriff, the Sheriff's deputy, the DA and a retired physician, just to mention a few.As always, the book read so well, that I felt I was there, and could actually see everything that was described.

The origin of the term Name Games comes out in the story. It is mentioned a couple of times. This book is a winner! You will not regret buying it!Enjoy!

By the way, my name would be Rusty LaRue!Now you will have to read the book to find out what that means! ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars A Good Introduction to Mark Manning
In Michael Craft's first volume in this series, he introduces the reader to Mark Manning, a Chicago newspaper reporter who for almost seven years has been writing about the mysterious disappearance of Helena Carter who apparently has more money than the Catholic Church but not if one priest has anything to do with it. When we first meet Mr. Manning, he has had a few unsatisfatory sexual encounters with women but during the course of the novel finds himself as he attempts to locate Ms. Carter. The male good guys, Mark and Neil, are ruggedly handsome; Roxanne, the attorney who cannot leave gay men alone, finally redeems herself; as a friend of mine says, Mr. Craft writes well about sex; he takes punches at the Religious Right; and the plot has great twists and turns and builds to a believable climax. In short, I want to know what happens to Mark and Neil in the next volume.

One small complaint: I now know more than I ever wanted to know about Abyssinian cats.

3-0 out of 5 stars Slow Starter...Predictable Finisher
This is the first book in the series and it leaves something to be desired. The "mystery" is predictable, save the "twin brother" twist.Mark Manning's coming out is tortured; and what's with the Japanese Vodka?Neil, Mark's "loftmate" is not fully flushed out as a character.I hope the 2nd book in the series has more to offer.

3-0 out of 5 stars A Bit of a Disappointment
Wealthy Chicago widow Helena Carter disappeared six years and nine months ago.In three months, Helena will be declared legally dead and her estate will be divided up amongst the charities listed in her will.Investigative journalist Mark Manning had covered Mrs. Carter's disappearance years ago and was one of the few who still believed that she was alive. He refused to follow the mainstream and make his articles match what every other newspaper was reporting until his editor gave him the ultimatum: either back up his story that Helena Carter was still alive or go find another job.Mark cannot believe that he is being tossed out after years of hard work and popular articles, but he is not going to leave without putting up a fight.

Mark digs up all of his old information about the Helena Carter case and reviews. Then he reinterviews the cast of suspects and begins to find some clues. All of his instincts tell him that Helena left of her own free will and has chosen to remain missing for personal reasons. But why?Mark wishes that he could leave Helena to her new life, wherever it is, but he just can't.His leads will send him to exclusive cat shows, religious cults, televangelists and a host of other wacky characters.Along the way, Mark makes a startling discovery - the reason why he has never been able to commit to a relationship and get married is because he's gay! When Mark's pursuit of the story leads him to Arizona, he meets a friend of a mutual friend and finds himself strongly attracted to architect Neil Waite. But will Neil be able to break down Mark's walls and pursue a relationship with him? Will Mark ruthlessly pursue the truth of Helena Carter regardless of the consequences? And what is up with Mark's strangely erotic dreams about flying naked?

Flight Dreams is the first book in the Mark Manning mystery series and I was not very impressed. The mystery plot had a lot of potential, missing heiress, tons of suspects, a surprise twist to the ending, but it was all presented as a sideline to Mark's personal life and Mark's personal life just wasn't that interesting.I liked Mark as a character at first, but after a while, I kind of lost that because the author takes any and every opportunity to stand up on his soap box about sex, homosexuality, politics, religion, etc. using Mark as his trailer. This led to a lot of long-winded sermons that I just skimmed through as I kept losing interest. On the plus side, the book is well written and the mystery had a lot of potential.I hear that the series gets better as it goes along, so maybe this is a just a rocky start...? ... Editorial Review

Laramie, Wyoming, is a complicated town that has only become more so since the infamous murder of a gay University of Wyoming student named Matt Shepard on a lonely dirt road in October 1998. A university town in the middle of one of the country's most rural, poor, and conservative states, it was unwittingly thrown into the middle of the nation's debates over homosexuality and hate crimes. While "Laramie didn't kill Matt," as University of Wyoming professorBeth Loffreda writes, "It might let us see how the politics of sexuality--perhaps now the most divisive issue in America's 'culture wars'--plays out in a forgotten corner of the country." As an insider and an outsider (she is the straight advisor to the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender Association and a state newcomer clearly in love with her surroundings), Loffreda approaches the complex questions the media, with their pack mentality, overlooked or shied away from using her own local but not provincial perspective. Why did Matt's death, which was one of 33 anti-gay murders that year, grip the nation? Why did none of the seven bias crimes bills proposed in Wyoming after the murder pass? What is the experience of being homosexual in a state with not a single gay gathering place to speak of and most people too afraid to be out? What happens when emotion--rather than action--is the only response to a hate crime? And how should Matt be remembered?

Leaving the media assumptions about the "hate state" in the dust, Loffreda deftly portrays a people deeply affected by what has happened in their midst, replete with the daily contradictions, political clashes, and halting transformations that defy sound bites. She introduces us to those the media never thought to interview--a jaded gay American Indian as well as Mexican American university students with their own stories of bigotry--and those making the real change in Laramie: people like Mike, who came out after Matt's death and has found the courage to become an activist, and the gays and lesbians who dressed as angels during the murderers' trials, blocking defrocked minister Fred Phelps and his virulent anti-gay messages with their enormous wings. Loffreda's nuanced, perceptive, and graceful discussion reminds us that the inheritance of Matt's death is far from settled for any of us. --Lesley Reed ... Read more

Editorial Review

History not only moves quickly--it is, in essence, what happened yesterday--but it is also quickly forgotten. This is especially true when many of the people who made it are gone or dying. Benjamin Heim Shepard's beautifully composed, and wonderfully moving White Nights and Ascending Shadows: An Oral History of the San Francisco AIDS Epidemic is a fine and telling history of how one city faced--and still faces--the endless effects of AIDS.

Based in interviews and oral histories with 30 people with AIDS, Benjamin Shepard manages to piece together more than three decades (1968-1998) of gay male life and culture. The interviews here chart not only the progress of AIDS in the gay community, but document the many manifestations of gay culture that occurred before and in response to the epidemic. Alternatively brave, fragile, furious, and mournful the men interviewed here speak their minds and force their visions and politics upon us in unforgettable ways. As a cultural, political, and medical history, White Nights and Ascending Shadows is an important book, and the men who speak throughout it are determined that we remember who they were and what they did to preserve their lives, their families, and their culture.--Michael Bronski ...
