Retro Ride: Advertising Art of the American Automobile by Collectors Press Average Customer Review: Hardcover (April, 2002) list price: $39.95 -- our price: $25.17 (price subject to change: see help) US | Canada | United Kingdom | Germany | France Reviews (6)
As these ads were doing their best to put a positive spin on owning a particular make, paintings were the ideal medium to create desire and so much easier to exaggerate reality.A whole society of wee folk was created to spend their lives zooming about town or country, permanently smiling and always waving to somebody along the highway. According to these paintings, most cars would easily accommodate four people in the front. The 1948 Hudson ad (page eighty-five) shows a wee person enjoying `...a heaping portion of roominess and comfort...' sitting on a back seat that looks like it could easily hold six. By the mid-sixties photography had replaced illustrations but the exaggeration continued, have a look at `Boulevard Photographic' by Jim Williams, the story of Detroit's leading car photo studio. I found it very interesting that these cars, very precisely painted, were usually placed in a setting that did not require the same amount of accuracy. The more popular makes were shown in everyday situations, pages ninety-four and ninety-five show three super street scenes with everybody looking at the latest model, naturally.Nearly all these ad paintings are anonymous but there are some by well-known artists, Austin Briggs painted the 1956 Chevrolet Bel Air and 1958 Chevrolet Impala, Stan Galli did the 1955 Bel Air and Bernie Fuchs the 1960 Cadillac Coupe De Ville. The ultimate in car art was the work of Art Fitzpatrick (car) and Van Kaufman (background) who created dozens of masterpieces for Pontiac in the fifties and sixties, the book has twenty-two of their ads.Have a look at their web site Fitz-art. Though this is a lovely book of car ads, I was disappointed by the presentation.Collectors Press editorial style is to make each page of their books as busy as possible. All of the spreads in this one have colored backgrounds and (really annoying) many of the ads are angled and overlap each other, several of them are cropped badly too, so that some of the text is unreadable. It is as if the publishers didn't think the material was very interesting and the pages needed some strong graphic presentation to compensate. It does take the edge of a fine book in my view.

Gran Turismo 3: A Spec by Sony Computer Entertainment Average Customer Review: CD-ROM (13 July, 2001) list price: $49.99 -- our price: $19.99 (price subject to change: see help) US | Canada | United Kingdom | Germany | France Editorial Review The PlayStation2 takes the Gran Turismo franchise to new heights in thethird edition of the venerable racing series. The graphics are sure to grabyou--the cars and tracks are awe inspiring, and there are some incredible lightingeffects. This game is much more than eye candy, though. The gameplay in Gran Turismo 3: A-Spec is the same as its predecessors;fans of the previous games will feel right at home, while newcomers will be ableto pick things up easily. There are more than 150 cars from which to choose, andplenty of tracks upon which to race them. Arcade mode works well for a quickfix, while simulation mode provides outstanding replay value. The sound effectsare impressive--each engine has a unique sound, and tire screeches fromdifferent cars sound noticeably different. The soundtrack is a good mix oforiginal compositions and a wide variety of recording artists, including MotleyCrue, Raekwon, Jimi Hendrix, and Snoop Dogg. One minor flaw with the game is its relatively predictable artificialintelligence. Computer-controlled cars follow distinct lines, and you'll be ableto pick up the patterns after a few races. Considering how far the graphics havecome since the original Gran Turismo, it's disappointing that the AIhasn't progressed similarly. Despite this, GT3 remains an outstandinggame. Few games offer its combination of high quality and immense variety.--Raymond M. Padilla Pros:

Open the lidon this fire-engine red metal toolbox, and you'll feel like a kid onChristmas morning. The tools are dropforged and heat-treated to last, and the sockets and wrenches come in SAE as well as metric sizes. Allied 6652561-Piece Ratcheting Screwdriver Set with Window Storage Case by Allied International Average Customer Review: Tools & Hardware list price: $19.99 -- our price: $15.19 (price subject to change: see help) US | Canada | United Kingdom | Germany | France Editorial Review In terms of bang per buck, if a regular screwdriver were a firecracker, this set would easily be a truckload of dynamite. The screwdriver itself is a beefy, well-made tool with a large cushioned grip offering plenty of hold and leverage. The pivoting shank can be locked into straight-out and either 45- or 90-degree-angle positions, offering an easy approach to difficult-to-reach screws or extra leverage for bearing down on a nut with one of the sockets. The kit includes three square-drive bits, seven Phillips-head bits, eight hex bits, two clutch bits, six Torx-drive bits, and four slotted bits, as well as longer nos. 1 and 2 Phillips bits and two longer slotted bits. You get nine standard sockets, from 3/16 to 1/2 inch, and nine metric sockets, from 5 to 13mm, along with two 1/4-inch socket-drive adapters. To complete the fastening cornucopia, Allied has included 2-1/4- and 4-inch bit-holder extensions. We really like the tough carrying case it all comes in, which has a perfect place for everything. This is the most versatile ratcheting-driver set in our store, and considering that the ratchet driver itself is such a durable tool, we don't think you can do better for the money. --Brian Trinen ... I've seriously reefed on this thing with as much force as I could muster (I'm not a small guy) when tightening the valve adjustment nut for the number three cylinder on my 1967 VW Van (which I love) and the thing held up under my best effort.I'm not saying it's unbreakable, because nothing is.I'm sure I could stick this thing in my vise put all my weight on sideways and it would break, but why would I do that.I paid for this thing!I found the bits and sockets to be pretty good.Sure they'll wear out a little faster than a professional quality socket set, and if you're a pro mechanic who goes at it 8 hours a day 5 days a week you probably won't even be looking at this set. I use it for a couple hours every weekend on my old air-cooled car collection (these VWs need a lot of attention, but they're worth it)and it's held up just fine under my abuse. This quickly went from being an impulse buy addition to my already extensive toolset, to being the most regularly usedtool in the box.Unlike my other ratchet sets, this one has a case with a labeled spot for every bit and socket, so they don't all end up floating around my toolbox. Dig it!

American Graffiti (25th Anniversary Edition) by Universal Studios Average Customer Review: VHS Tape (26 December, 2001) list price: $9.98 US | Canada | United Kingdom | Germany | France Editorial Review Here's how critic Roger Ebert described the unique and lasting value of George Lucas's 1973 box-office hit, American Graffiti: "[It's] not only a great movie but a brilliant work of historical fiction; no sociological treatise could duplicate the movie's success in remembering exactly how it was to be alive at that cultural instant." The time to which Ebert and the film refers is the summer of 1962, and American Graffiti captures the look, feel, and sound of that era by chronicling one memorable night in the lives of several young Californians on the cusp of adulthood. (In essence, Lucas was making a semiautobiographical tribute to his own days as a hot-rod cruiser, and the film's phenomenal success paved the way for Star Wars.) The action is propelled by the music of Wolfman Jack's rock & roll radio show--a soundtrack of pop hits that would become as popular as the film itself. As Lucas develops several character subplots, American Graffiti becomes a flawless time capsule of meticulously re-created memory, as authentic as a documentary and vividly realized through innovative use of cinematography and sound. The once-in-a-lifetime ensemble cast members inhabit their roles so fully that they don't seem like actors at all, comprising a who's who of performers--some of whom went on to stellar careers--including Ron Howard, Richard Dreyfuss, Harrison Ford, Cindy Williams, Mackenzie Phillips, Charles Martin Smith, Candy Clark, and Paul Le Mat. A true American classic, the film ranks No. 77 on the American Film Institute's list of all-time greatest American movies. --Jeff Shannon ... Read more Features Reviews (107)

365 Dream Cars Page-A-Day Calendar 2003 by Workman Publishing Average Customer Review: Calendar (01 August, 2002) list price: $11.95 -- our price: $11.95 (price subject to change: see help) US | Canada | United Kingdom | Germany | France Reviews (1)
Each page's big color picture is accompanied by comments or information about the day's car, written by the editors of Car & Driver.Plus, it comes with an online version of the same calendar. What's not to love?Well, this is one of those calendars that feature the cheap 1-page-for-the-weekend deals, rather than allowing Saturday and Sunday to each have their own page.Which is kind of dumb. But, if you keep it at work, like I do, you won't even notice. My advice would be to buy this calendar if you're just a fan of pretty much all cars and love seeing automotive art. ... Read more Isbn: 0761127127 |

The Piranha Club: Power and Influence in Formula One by Virgin Publishing Average Customer Review: Hardcover (01 December, 2001) list price: $25.95 US | Canada | United Kingdom | Germany | France Reviews (1)
Instead of delving on the inner workings of the Piranha Club, the author opts to present a collection of biographies of the more prominent members of the Club. There are some anecdotes on the inner workings interwoven between the life stories of the team principals(e.g. Schumacher's transfer from Jordan to Benetton, poaching of Minardi's chief engineer by Toyota, Frank Williams closeness with Ron Dennis) but they are few and far between. If the author could have made these inner workings of the club as the main thesis of the book then it could have been a far worthwhile read. ... Read more Isbn: 1852279079 |

Winning: The Business of Formula One by W. W. Norton & Company Average Customer Review: Hardcover (November, 2000) list price: $29.95 -- our price: $29.95 (price subject to change: see help) US | Canada | United Kingdom | Germany | France Editorial Review Auto racing is one of the world's top spectator sports, and Russell Hotten's Winning thoroughly examines the larger-than-life personalities, cutting-edge technologies and over-the-top commercial triumphs that mark the stunningly successful British-based Grand Prix circuit. Hotten, financial news editor at London's Mail on Sunday newspaper, notes at the start that an entire March-through-October Formula One racing season actually consumes less time than a single typical work week--although its outsized entertainment and business benefits are ridden full bore year-round. Written from a Brit's global perspective, his book fully explains the sky-high stakes that result when every two-hour race on alternating Sundays is watched by 350 million enthusiasts in over 200 countries. "Only the Olympics and (soccer's) World Cup surpass these viewing figures," Hotten writes, "but they only take place every four years." As such F1 has become an international commercial phenomenon, even if its U.S. appeal is dampened by America's fascination with homegrown NASCAR and Indy racing. Everything is in place for even more growth, though, and Hotten tells all about the "fast cars, wealth, glamour, sex, danger" and controversies (such as the big-money sponsorships by tobacco companies). Race fans worldwide, as well as those interested in the general business of sports, will likely find Winning a winner. --Howard Rothman ... Read more Reviews (3)
Even the layout of the book can get frustrating. The chapters don't flow well and the whole book comes off as being incoherent and repetitive.Hotten should have gathered all his facts and then let someone else write and edit the book for him, probably down to about half its current size.I'm not sure if I can recommend another book for people interested in learning about the F1 business, but I can certainly advise against getting this one.
The book is an easy read and makes watchingFormula One racing more interesting. ... Read more Isbn: 1587990113 |

I just bought Billennium Cars on CD and boy did it help me choose the right vehicle. It's the most powerful and complete analysis tool Ihave ever seen on CD.You can research by make and model or by personalcriteria, read reviews and road tests, go through the spec sheets and mostpopular accessories, check out performance ratings, and do so much more. Oh yes... you can even calculate how much the car of your choice will costyou and give you the resale (trade-in) value on your existing car. Butyou should see the pictures, the videos, 360 degree views, concept cars, 3Dshow, etc.The music is great! The Magazine section is very informativeand entertaining too.
