4-0 out of 5 stars Fluid drive art.
For years car ads must have been the ultimate goal for any slick photorealist style artist though I bet there was actually only a small number who could achieve the high standards required by Detroit. The five hundred ad paintings in this book are the pick of the crop. They run from 1923 thru 1965, from the mid-sixties photos were the dominant graphic in car ads.

As these ads were doing their best to put a positive spin on owning a particular make, paintings were the ideal medium to create desire and so much easier to exaggerate reality.A whole society of wee folk was created to spend their lives zooming about town or country, permanently smiling and always waving to somebody along the highway. According to these paintings, most cars would easily accommodate four people in the front. The 1948 Hudson ad (page eighty-five) shows a wee person enjoying `...a heaping portion of roominess and comfort...' sitting on a back seat that looks like it could easily hold six. By the mid-sixties photography had replaced illustrations but the exaggeration continued, have a look at `Boulevard Photographic' by Jim Williams, the story of Detroit's leading car photo studio.

I found it very interesting that these cars, very precisely painted, were usually placed in a setting that did not require the same amount of accuracy. The more popular makes were shown in everyday situations, pages ninety-four and ninety-five show three super street scenes with everybody looking at the latest model, naturally.Nearly all these ad paintings are anonymous but there are some by well-known artists, Austin Briggs painted the 1956 Chevrolet Bel Air and 1958 Chevrolet Impala, Stan Galli did the 1955 Bel Air and Bernie Fuchs the 1960 Cadillac Coupe De Ville. The ultimate in car art was the work of Art Fitzpatrick (car) and Van Kaufman (background) who created dozens of masterpieces for Pontiac in the fifties and sixties, the book has twenty-two of their ads.Have a look at their web site Fitz-art.

Though this is a lovely book of car ads, I was disappointed by the presentation.Collectors Press editorial style is to make each page of their books as busy as possible. All of the spreads in this one have colored backgrounds and (really annoying) many of the ads are angled and overlap each other, several of them are cropped badly too, so that some of the text is unreadable. It is as if the publishers didn't think the material was very interesting and the pages needed some strong graphic presentation to compensate. It does take the edge of a fine book in my view.

5-0 out of 5 stars Reflects an undeniable nostalgia
Through the reproduction of more than five hundred historical print advertisements in their original form and color, Retro Ride traces the evolution of the automobile and the developing sophistication of the marketing messages that helped to popularize the automobile and forever alter American popular culture. Over a spectrum of five decades ranging from the "Roaring Twenties through the Go-Go Sixties, Retro Ride showcases original print advertizing that provided the consumer public with information and myth with that shaped their perspectives, attitudes and relationships to the automobile. A unique contribution to American popular culture histories, Retro Ride reflects an undeniable nostalgia for those of us who can vividly remember when such cars and such ads offered up automotive visions of affordable paradise and personal fulfillment.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fast Ride Through a Long Century
Previous reviews have addressed the attractions this lovely volume has for car lovers. However, I found it a marvelous mirror of American society through the first 2/3rds of the 20th century. Family values, exploration and the desire for the good life characterized pre-depression advertising. Luxury and escapism dominated pre-WW II graphics. Technology and patriotism surfaced during the war. Family themes and safety emerged during the birth of the baby boomers as full station wagons and back seats filled with kids were portrayed. Increasing disposable income in the 50's prompted a return to the freedom of the road, travel and a new emphasis on performance. By the early sixties, couples in romantic situations had replaced families as cars were portrayed as an accessory to a "sexy" lifestyle. The question that remained was whether advertisers established these trends or took their cues from the mood of the country. ... Read more

    Editorial Review

The PlayStation2 takes the Gran Turismo franchise to new heights in thethird edition of the venerable racing series. The graphics are sure to grabyou--the cars and tracks are awe inspiring, and there are some incredible lightingeffects. This game is much more than eye candy, though.

The gameplay in Gran Turismo 3: A-Spec is the same as its predecessors;fans of the previous games will feel right at home, while newcomers will be ableto pick things up easily. There are more than 150 cars from which to choose, andplenty of tracks upon which to race them. Arcade mode works well for a quickfix, while simulation mode provides outstanding replay value. The sound effectsare impressive--each engine has a unique sound, and tire screeches fromdifferent cars sound noticeably different. The soundtrack is a good mix oforiginal compositions and a wide variety of recording artists, including MotleyCrue, Raekwon, Jimi Hendrix, and Snoop Dogg.

One minor flaw with the game is its relatively predictable artificialintelligence. Computer-controlled cars follow distinct lines, and you'll be ableto pick up the patterns after a few races. Considering how far the graphics havecome since the original Gran Turismo, it's disappointing that the AIhasn't progressed similarly. Despite this, GT3 remains an outstandinggame. Few games offer its combination of high quality and immense variety.--Raymond M. Padilla

    Pros:

    • Incredible graphics
    • Excellent physics and controls
    • Great soundtrack
    Cons:
    • Predictable AI
    • No Porsche or Ferrari licenses

5-0 out of 5 stars Only GT4 is better!!
The only driving simulator that is better is GT4. If your expecting an easy arcade like racer with Lambo's and dressed up import's go try NFS or some other title. Gran Turismo is the measure by which all racing game's are compared to, and justifable too. Realistic graphic's and physic's are great. Expect to take a lot of time learning to drive. This is not a casual racer. Only two comment's/annoyance's are the music and number of car's. 1. Cars: Or should I say lack of car'
    s. I think there were more car's in the original Gran Turismo(not sure I could be wrong). Also I think that more of a variety of car's. After winning the 50th Nissan Skyline(not sold in USA) it get a bit annoying, lol. This is fixed in GT4 so don't worry too much(number of car's). 2.Music: Aside from Lenny Kravitz and Motley Crue the sound is pale in comparison to GT2(The best of Gran turismo soundtracks). This also goes for GT4(apart from Van Halen's-"Panama"). It seem's as if they spent so much time and effort on other area's and music was an afterthought. In the first two (GT and GT2) soundrtack's they were an integril(I know I spelled that wrong, lol)part of the experience. Only serious racer's and car nuts need to apply.

1-0 out of 5 stars I MEAN NO STARS!
    This game has bad graphics.
    It has sucky cars.
It is so hard to play on different tracks.
The cars dosn't even have a driver in it.

5-0 out of 5 stars The King of All Racing Games!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I've been a fan of Gran Turismo ever since it's debut. The game is so addictive that I have played it for 10 hours straight! The graffics are stunning and the courses are well made. My favorite part about the game is that they brought in F1 racers. I smoke the competition every time I use my 900 horsepowered monster! Over all this game is AWESOME! ... Read more

This is a great set for the mechanic--and the aspiringmechanic. We're glad to see that Allied hasaccommodated our silent but frequent wish: Can't somebody include ahandful of cable ties in one of these kits? 5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Tool Kit For The Price!
This is a great tool set for the price. It is not designed for the repair shop mechanic in an everyday use situation, but is great for the casual user. The Companion line at Sears gives you much less for a lot more money. If you plan to use tools everyday at a repair shop, buy something with a lifetime guarantee like the Craftsman line.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great tool
This kit comes with everything you could need for a quick repair on your vehicle, other reviews said the tools were weak? they are incredibly strong and durable, great buy!

5-0 out of 5 stars Our Car Club loves these
I saw this awhile back on Amazon and had to buy it.I also recommended it to my car club on ClubRSX.com.We all bought them up to the point where it was out of stock on Amazon for a few weeks. We had a car meet where we needed these tools to work on our cars to modify them and they worked well. For $ bux, can't go wrong and it's all in one box.Handy and quick.Granted we're not rebuilding engines or some "heavy duty" work, but we were doing some moderate modifications like putting in new gaskets, cold air intakes, new head units, etc. These worked really well. Some of the sockets fall out easily, but that's ok.You get that with most socket sets except for the most expensive Craftsman ones (you get what you paid for).I later saw these in Pep Boys for $, so my car club is quite glad we snatched these up cheap. For $, how can you go wrong? ... Here's the big daddy of home and auto tool sets--everything youcould want for just about any job at home or on the road. Open the lidon this fire-engine red metal toolbox, and you'll feel like a kid onChristmas morning. The tools are dropforged and heat-treated to last, and the sockets and wrenches come in SAE as well as metric sizes. Thescrewdriver bits are, to our delight, in labeled slots in the box, which features a removable tray. There's a great assortment of sockets, including the kind you need for spark plugs, and there's also a niceamount of fasteners. The latches on the tool chest make that satisfying"click" that lets you know they're closed tight. There's even a placeto slip on a padlock if you need to. 2-0 out of 5 stars You get what you pay for!
For the price you are paying, this toolset is a bargain. However the tools themselves and the contruction of the metal box leave little to be desired. My initial impression of the product was satisfactory until I tried to take the tools out its molded plastic holder. The molds were made a little too smallthat when I succeeded pulling any of the tools out, the plastic mold was deformed visibly. Also when the socket wrench was a little tight fitting and when I attempted to pull socket out itended up bending a metal washer inside the rotating portion ofwrench.Bottom line is this. For the price you're paying, you will get exactly what you pay for.Luckily comes with a lifetime warranty so if you break something you can get it replaced. If you're a penny pincher then this maybe a tool set for you but if you're looking for a high quality tool set I would recommend you go with a brand name (Craftman, Stanley, etc.)

4-0 out of 5 stars Pretty good.
I like the tool set and all the items that came with it. I have only one complaint, I've only had it for about two weeks and one of the clips on the front side of the box has broken through the housing of the down bracing lock showing poor manufacturing. I'm not picky about tools but I think anyone thinking about buying this item should know about it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Perfect car toolbox
I ordered this because we needed one for the car.It doesn't have a hammer, but throw in a small one of yours and it's perfect. There is also enough room to add other tools you might feel you need. The size is compact, and it fits almost anywhere. The tools are just enough to carry along.Best of all the drawer won't open unless the lid of the box is up.That's a handy feature for transporting from one place to another. It has come in handy twice already, and we've only had it for a for a few weeks.Definitely a best buy for the price. ... Read more

In terms of bang per buck, if a regular screwdriver were a firecracker, this set would easily be a truckload of dynamite. The screwdriver itself is a beefy, well-made tool with a large cushioned grip offering plenty of hold and leverage. The pivoting shank can be locked into straight-out and either 45- or 90-degree-angle positions, offering an easy approach to difficult-to-reach screws or extra leverage for bearing down on a nut with one of the sockets. The kit includes three square-drive bits, seven Phillips-head bits, eight hex bits, two clutch bits, six Torx-drive bits, and four slotted bits, as well as longer nos. 1 and 2 Phillips bits and two longer slotted bits. You get nine standard sockets, from 3/16 to 1/2 inch, and nine metric sockets, from 5 to 13mm, along with two 1/4-inch socket-drive adapters. To complete the fastening cornucopia, Allied has included 2-1/4- and 4-inch bit-holder extensions. We really like the tough carrying case it all comes in, which has a perfect place for everything. This is the most versatile ratcheting-driver set in our store, and considering that the ratchet driver itself is such a durable tool, we don't think you can do better for the money. --Brian Trinen ... 5-0 out of 5 stars This set Rocks like a Campervan on a Honeymoon!
I've had no problems at all with this set.I've used it numerous times since I received it last month, and I couldn't be happier. What's great about it is the pivoting shank (neck?) on the thing that allows you to get into places other screwdrivers can't.I've used pivoting screwdrivers before, but this one actually locks in at a 45-degree angle, and won't slip in high torque situations the way others will.I've used this on my cars where I can attach the sockets to it and turn nuts in places my regular ratchet can't reach.

I've seriously reefed on this thing with as much force as I could muster (I'm not a small guy) when tightening the valve adjustment nut for the number three cylinder on my 1967 VW Van (which I love) and the thing held up under my best effort.I'm not saying it's unbreakable, because nothing is.I'm sure I could stick this thing in my vise put all my weight on sideways and it would break, but why would I do that.I paid for this thing!I found the bits and sockets to be pretty good.Sure they'll wear out a little faster than a professional quality socket set, and if you're a pro mechanic who goes at it 8 hours a day 5 days a week you probably won't even be looking at this set. I use it for a couple hours every weekend on my old air-cooled car collection (these VWs need a lot of attention, but they're worth it)and it's held up just fine under my abuse. This quickly went from being an impulse buy addition to my already extensive toolset, to being the most regularly usedtool in the box.Unlike my other ratchet sets, this one has a case with a labeled spot for every bit and socket, so they don't all end up floating around my toolbox. Dig it!

1-0 out of 5 stars Didn't last long
The ratchet broke with my wife using it to break loose a torx screw. Not a quality ratchet in the kit. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Every teen should have this book
This isn't much of an auto repair book, as such. For repair, I'd advise those who know what they're doing to grab themselves a Chilton manual specific to their car.

However, I think this book should be read by anyone preparing to enter the world of driving.I personally would have my child read this book before allowing them to own a car.

This book pretty much covers how a car works and simple/routine maintenance.Stuff most people who drive have no clue about.Stuff that is important to know if you're planning on navigating 2 tons of steel in three dimensions at 60mph.

This is a great present for your teen's 16th birthday (place it in the front seat of their new car!), or for anyone who has just gotten a new car (and you know they barely understand how to turn it on).

5-0 out of 5 stars awesome book
i knew nothing about cars when i bought this book.it really helped me a lot.buy it and you'll learn more than you can imagine.

believe me its worth every penny.i was a novice but not anymore.i'm giving credit to where credit is due!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Now I understand! Look out drivers!
I don't own a car, but this book was recommended to me by a friend (OK, my therapist...) to get me ready to "climb into the driver's seat." It helped me greatly. In other words, VROOM VROOM VROOM if you know what I mean! This isn't one of those books that make you want to brush your teeth. Now I feel like I understand how cars work, so I can smell the coffee (that's right!) now as well as the chocolates. I liked the line "No pain - no stain!" 2-0 out of 5 stars No good
The author is an owner and operator of a tutoring center. He is not an expert in auto mechanics. As he points out on the back cover the pictures and the concepts were for teenage boys and the accompanying graphics are of poor quality.

If you actually want to learn anything substative of autos this is a poor poor choice. You are better of visiting the automotive section of www.howstuffworks.com or some similar website to learn more with better graphics and for free.

I bought this book long time ago and finally had the time to look at it and I regret it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent book for a real beginner!
This book was a joy to find and read. I have always wanted to getting started learning about how a car works but never could find a reliable source of information that put the whole picture together. If you already know the basics of how a combustible engine works and how the basic systems of a car work such as steering, brakes, etc, then you don't need this really basic guide. But if you are like me and needed a place to get started at the beginning then this book will be a real enlightening and encouraging experience.

5-0 out of 5 stars If you want an elementary book on how cars work: This is it
For a non-mechanic, this book gives the simplest guide to understanding how cars work with excellent illustrations. The book is broken down into short sections giving you a very basic understanding of the engine to the electrical to all parts of a car. The book covers it all.The language is very simple as it breaks down the various car parts into understandable terminology and by the end if you didn't know what "twin cams" mean, you will now. You won't be able to rebuild a car after but that's not the purpose. For a mechanic it may seem like a comic book but for the uninformed its very enlightening. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Transform yourself to a 'real' car owner
What I like most about this book is the simple, direct, logical presentation style of the author. The explanation method always starts with a simplified reference to a human body, then a direct comparison with the actual car part. So you could analogically grasp how the part works and deduce logically on how to take care of that part or how to deal with the associated problems.
Aside from that this book also explains very well the necessary terms such as tire size/codes, the meaning of 15W40 for the car oil, etc.
With all of that, this book does not make you a car genius, but you would be far from giving your car technician a zero-knowledge customer impression.
The downside: the troubleshooting section at the end of each chapter is probably better off left out as it's very general and of little value. A better approach would be to incorporate them as examples, with logical guidance on solving the problem.
This book is a good starting material for people who has zero background in automobiles (most of us are, including myself), it would not, however, be comprehensive enough for people who has strong interest in cars.
I would love to see a second series by the same author for readers who graduated from her current book.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Great Book for Beginners
This book is great. It covers all the main points with money saving tips. This book has it all and it explains it in a very easy no fuss way with hundreds of diagrams.

5-0 out of 5 stars Exactly what I was looking for.Great book.
When I decided I wanted to learn a little bit more about what makes my car tick, and perhaps find out on my own what that annoying (and fairly bad sounding) whir was, I decided to check online for a few introductive books. This was the best one I found. It explained everything in a very intuitive and helpful manner.I recommend it to anyone curious about what their amazing automobile really is, and why it took so long for them to come about.Yes, they're pretty complicated, but a whole lot of fun when you figure them out. ... Editorial Review

Here's how critic Roger Ebert described the unique and lasting value of George Lucas's 1973 box-office hit, American Graffiti: "[It's] not only a great movie but a brilliant work of historical fiction; no sociological treatise could duplicate the movie's success in remembering exactly how it was to be alive at that cultural instant." The time to which Ebert and the film refers is the summer of 1962, and American Graffiti captures the look, feel, and sound of that era by chronicling one memorable night in the lives of several young Californians on the cusp of adulthood. (In essence, Lucas was making a semiautobiographical tribute to his own days as a hot-rod cruiser, and the film's phenomenal success paved the way for Star Wars.) The action is propelled by the music of Wolfman Jack's rock & roll radio show--a soundtrack of pop hits that would become as popular as the film itself. As Lucas develops several character subplots, American Graffiti becomes a flawless time capsule of meticulously re-created memory, as authentic as a documentary and vividly realized through innovative use of cinematography and sound. The once-in-a-lifetime ensemble cast members inhabit their roles so fully that they don't seem like actors at all, comprising a who's who of performers--some of whom went on to stellar careers--including Ron Howard, Richard Dreyfuss, Harrison Ford, Cindy Williams, Mackenzie Phillips, Charles Martin Smith, Candy Clark, and Paul Le Mat. A true American classic, the film ranks No. 77 on the American Film Institute's list of all-time greatest American movies. --Jeff Shannon ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars BEST MOVIE EVER!! MADE!
Yes, the BEST movie of all time for me and always will be!I had the true pleasure of seeing this film 10 times in the first year of release on the silver screen. This movie was held over for more than a year at the Westport Cine' in St. Louis, MO.I'm sure that has to be a record for any movie ever shown at the same theater without interuption.

This is a real, feel good movie.Great fun and makes me wish I was about eighteen years older and living in that town with George Lucas as a teenager. All the cruisin' and boozin' and teenage pranks and making out and the car-hop and school hop and a gang whose membership involves doing something very wrong. All this and a soundtrack that simply is classic rock of the late 50's and early 60's played for you from the town's own mysterious DJ (played by Wolfman Jack).

No one should pass through life without seeing this one of a kind classic.Don't debate, just buy this! And do it now!

5-0 out of 5 stars A Portal Back To 1962! .... A Winning Film (& DVD To Match)!
I think you'll find that the cash you'll fork over for this DVD Collector's Edition of 1973's "American Graffiti" will be money very wisely spent.Because the outstanding, in-depth, 78-minute documentary feature, "The Making Of American Graffiti", is worth the cost all by itself.

Every single one of the film's major cast members takes part in the documentary program. Director George Lucas and Producer Francis Ford Coppola (plus other members of the production staff and crew) also participate in this fascinating behind-the-scenes "Making Of" feature, which is one of the best documentaries I've ever come across on a DVD.

Mr. Lucas talks openly and extensively about the making of "Graffiti" and guides the viewer, step-by-step, through the many aspects of creating this unique film -- from the difficulty in getting a studio interested in the project, to the movie's filming on the streets of two small California towns, and through to the release of the picture in theaters (the movie opened on August 11, 1973).

Many interesting tidbits of information are revealed in the documentary, including Harrison Ford's recollection of his "cowboy hat". It seems that Harrison was opposed to getting one of those awful '60s-style haircuts (as were others in the cast). So Ford talked Director Lucas into letting him wear a cowboy hat instead. And then there's Charlie Martin Smith ("Toad"), who had some problems parking his motor scooter in the film's very first scene. But Charlie's gaffe was left in the final cut of the movie by Director Lucas. (Which is a good thing too; it's a great moment in the picture.)

Some original actor Screen Tests are also included in the Making-Of documentary. If you keep your eyes peeled on the "clapboards" that are shown in a few of these Screen Test shots, you'll note that the date of filming is "May 26, 1972" (which is 15 months before the movie finally got released into theaters).

"Graffiti" took just four weeks to film, but Mr. Lucas, during the documentary, said that it took him six months after filming was completed to edit the movie down to a manageable size. He tells us that his first cut of "Graffiti" was a mammoth three hours in length. Therefore, much paring was required.

Other bonus features on the DVD include the Original Theatrical Trailer, which I found very good. Plus, a goodly number of "Cast & Crew Bios" to scroll through; as well as some informative Production Notes. All text pages I found most rewarding as well.

Then, of course, the DVD (which was originally released by Universal Home Video on September 15, 1998, to commemorate the movie's 25th anniversary) offers up a nice-looking Anamorphic Widescreen 2.35:1 version of "Graffiti" itself. Colors look rich and saturated and the black levels during the many outdoor night scenes look very sharp as well, with little in the way of video distractions. Some fans of the film will no doubt be disappointed that a Dolby 5.1 re-mix was not included here (just a 2.0 Surround Sound track is employed for this DVD).But I think the Surround track does quite nicely. But a full-fledged 5.1 would also have been nice, to highlight the amazing number of rock-and-roll oldies in the film.

    ------------------------

"American Graffiti", IMO, is in a class by itself. It has the perfect 1960s "feel" to it, that Director George Lucas strives so hard for (and succeeds in portraying). Each time you re-visit this film you are immediately transported back to the Summer of 1962, and to all those great oldies blaring away on the car radio.

5-0 out of 5 stars American Graffiti for the male mind
Set in 1962, this coming of age story for California guys showcases the pop world from a male perspective. In dusk-to-dawn fashion, they guys face their respective turning points in their lives -- where boys turn into "men". The goils exist as foils or fantasy fluff for male consumption.A classic example of Inez Hedge's central thesis in "Breaking the Frame" where she explores film language and the experience of limits. Film viewers are rarely shown what is going on inside the minds of the women's characters.Females exist as subjects within a frame that assumes the male perspective.Women's passive positioning in film language is reinforced by two directorial tactics:1)most point-of-view shots are from a male perspective;2) males originate most of the action. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars So Cool!
Anyone who buys this calendar has to love cars. That's a given.OK, so, what's in this calendar? It focuses primarily on a lot of concept and production sports cars, luxury automobiles, and even a few racing models. It features technical highlights of cool automotive innovations currently in use once in a while, too, for those with technical interests.

Each page's big color picture is accompanied by comments or information about the day's car, written by the editors of Car & Driver.Plus, it comes with an online version of the same calendar. What's not to love?Well, this is one of those calendars that feature the cheap 1-page-for-the-weekend deals, rather than allowing Saturday and Sunday to each have their own page.Which is kind of dumb. But, if you keep it at work, like I do, you won't even notice.

My advice would be to buy this calendar if you're just a fan of pretty much all cars and love seeing automotive art. ... Read more

I see hre that is $28.00 This book has about 3 pages for each car that has colour pictures, it gives all of the technical data onthe cars, tells how many are in the world, Everything you want to knowexcept the price of them. I has a whole article on each car telling you alot of information about it. It includes most of the exotic cars new andold such as the Ferrari Dino, Lamborghini Mura, Countach, and Diablo SV,McLaren F1, Lotus Esprite, Astin Martin DB1, BD6, and the DB7. Ect. 5-0 out of 5 stars car lover's dream book
For most of us the cars Frankel show us we will only see in books such as this or our dreams. The 51 models shown here represent slightly less than 200,000 cars produced with 10 models representing 90% of that. Only a thirdof the cars are still in production - the others range up to 92 years (andstill running - the original Rolls Royce Silver Ghost). The vast majorityof these particular carsare plated in Britain so we won't see them onNorth American roads although many of their breathern may be found inEurope or over here. I have ridden in one of the models shown (an E Type)and have lusted over the few others I have seen. This truly is a car loversdream book. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars What a gem!
This has to be a one of a kind book! This book to takes you to various race circuits around the world.Although there are several obvious omissions the book is still superb.Colour photos, factual information, diagrams, etc ,make this book a great value and a bargain.

Most motor racing fans will enjoy this book.

4-0 out of 5 stars So where's the Glen?
This is a fabulous book. I wanted to say that so my only nit-pik can be taken in proper context. How, I repeat HOW, can the Watkins Glen circuit in upstate New York have possibly been left out of this book? It's probably because I attended the Grand Prix several times in the late 60's, that I am flabbergasted by this omission. Other than that glaring omission, I loved the book.

5-0 out of 5 stars This is One Book to Keep on the Coffee Table!
This one is a "no-brainer," for me. If you love auto racing, this book is a MUST HAVE! It doesn't matter what kind of racing circuit you enjoy: NASCAR, Formula One, IRL, CART, it doesn't matter. This book shows the tracks, detailed descriptions of each turn, including highlights of famous races on each course. For circuits that have changed over the years, it even shows the evolution of the changes. With stunning color photos of famous drivers, famous racing moments, and several track perspectives, and even the famous 14 mile Nurburgring circuit from days gone by. This is a book all racing fans should have sitting close by to refer to at a moment's notice.

NOTE: (added 5/19/02) The book only goes up to the 1999 season, so it will not reflect the changes made to Hockenheim, Germany's circuit in the 2002 season. This is a MUST HAVE book if you have an interest in remembering the older, longer Hockenheimring that is now a thing of the past. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars More anecdotes please...
This book chronicles the different life stories of the prominent personalities of the F1 paddock - Bernie Ecclestone, Max Mosley, Frank Williams, Ron Dennis as well as some of the old members like Enzo Ferrari, Walker, Cooper and Chapman. Also chronicles the rise of Paul Stoddart, the owner of the Minardi Team.

Instead of delving on the inner workings of the Piranha Club, the author opts to present a collection of biographies of the more prominent members of the Club. There are some anecdotes on the inner workings interwoven between the life stories of the team principals(e.g. Schumacher's transfer from Jordan to Benetton, poaching of Minardi's chief engineer by Toyota, Frank Williams closeness with Ron Dennis) but they are few and far between.

If the author could have made these inner workings of the club as the main thesis of the book then it could have been a far worthwhile read. ... Read more

    Editorial Review

Auto racing is one of the world's top spectator sports, and Russell Hotten's Winning thoroughly examines the larger-than-life personalities, cutting-edge technologies and over-the-top commercial triumphs that mark the stunningly successful British-based Grand Prix circuit. Hotten, financial news editor at London's Mail on Sunday newspaper, notes at the start that an entire March-through-October Formula One racing season actually consumes less time than a single typical work week--although its outsized entertainment and business benefits are ridden full bore year-round. Written from a Brit's global perspective, his book fully explains the sky-high stakes that result when every two-hour race on alternating Sundays is watched by 350 million enthusiasts in over 200 countries. "Only the Olympics and (soccer's) World Cup surpass these viewing figures," Hotten writes, "but they only take place every four years." As such F1 has become an international commercial phenomenon, even if its U.S. appeal is dampened by America's fascination with homegrown NASCAR and Indy racing. Everything is in place for even more growth, though, and Hotten tells all about the "fast cars, wealth, glamour, sex, danger" and controversies (such as the big-money sponsorships by tobacco companies). Race fans worldwide, as well as those interested in the general business of sports, will likely find Winning a winner. --Howard Rothman ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Boring
This is a really boring book.As you read it, you're always waiting to get to the interesting part that never really arrives.Hotten's writing style is very dry and the book reads like a textbook. He also constantly repeats the same things over and over again - yes, I already know that F1 is very expensive, Ferrari is passionate and Williams has great engineering.

Even the layout of the book can get frustrating. The chapters don't flow well and the whole book comes off as being incoherent and repetitive.Hotten should have gathered all his facts and then let someone else write and edit the book for him, probably down to about half its current size.I'm not sure if I can recommend another book for people interested in learning about the F1 business, but I can certainly advise against getting this one.

4-0 out of 5 stars There is alot more to F1 than the racing
This book examines the sport outside of the actual racing. The cost of the series, the sponsorship, and the politics. It also examines the history of the sport to show how the sport evolved into what it is today. It highlights a few teams as examples of the way the teams approach the f1 environment. It is an interesting sport where Michael Schmaucher makes more in a year than the total budget of some of the less competative teams (i.e. Arrows). Don't be fooled by the Nov 2000 publication date. This is a book that was written in 1998 and then published for the US market in 2000. There is a final chapter that I am sure was supposed to be substituted for the original final chapter (It is in large part a cut and paste of the original final chapter), but due to poor editing both chapters are included in the book. Overall I enjoyed the book and found that it really helped my understanding of the sport. Before this book, I could never understand how the underfunded teams survived.

4-0 out of 5 stars Aninformative behind the scenes look at Formula One
A well written book covering the various players (the teams, FIA, advertising, sponsors and the media) that make up Formula One today. The book traces the origins of the sport and how it has evolved into the mediaevent that it is today.

The book is an easy read and makes watchingFormula One racing more interesting. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The Definitive Review
I have a number of autocourses and I still feel that they are getting better with every passing year. If you have an interest in Formula 1 then you should have this book. It gives an overview of each team in the championship and really gets a great insight as to how their performances stacked up and what their expectations really were or should have been. The race guides are an indespensible piece of information for the serious fan, although they do occasionally miss outstanding performances from the middle or rear of the field, due to the majority of the focus being on the battle at the front, however most details are covered and in very good detail. The summary of the other racing series (F3000, F3, CART, NASCAR, etc) is a very worthwhile addition as it gives a good reference point without having to purchase other literature. Then there is the top 10 driver lists, they may not always be the rankings you expect, or agree with!, but they certainly are a good talking point, and quite well justified in most cases.
Overall the most complete annual book about Formula 1 and a complete necessity to any real fan.

    5-0 out of 5 stars 51st Edition - Ferrari & Schumacher Again
This is the latest edition of the Autocourse F1 Grand Prix Annual. As usual, it is packed with details of the teams, drivers and the races with many many beautiful pictures of the 2001 F1 Grand Prix Season. It is always enjoyable to read and to recap the excitement of the season. This edition is even more special if you are a Schumacher or Ferrari fan.Shumi won his forth title and has broken several records while the Ferrari F1 Team has made it two in a roll.

Although DVD or VCD on the 2001 Grand Prix Season will be published soon, I still find reading the Autocourse more enjoyable.

5-0 out of 5 stars THE book of F1

5-0 out of 5 stars F1 at its finest!
This book is one of the best books that I've ever read. It does not concentrate on the stats or indeed particularly on the winners of the World Championship. It takes a personal look at the people, races and years that have shaped F1 from it's very begining. It is a great read for any F1 fan as Roebuck succeeds in not only jogging our memory of the past but also telling untold behind the scenes stories in detail not to mention a tinge of humour. I trully love this book, in fact I think I've read it cover to cover at least 3 times if not more.

5-0 out of 5 stars A collection of brilliant portraits
Nigel Roebuck, one of the finest journalists to cover motorsport in general and Formula One in particular, presents in this booka wonderful series of sharp vignettes covering the entire period of the modern World Championship. Roebuck begins at Imola in 1994, when, as he puts it aptly, "everything changed" with the tragic death of Ayrton Senna and the introduction of knee-jerk "safety" improvements which have led only to boring racing and have not, as we learned earlier this season, prevented what are, given the nature of the sport, inevitable tragedies. Hard as it is to believe, the "turbo years" of the late 70s and 80s are beginning to look suspiciously like a final golden age, which they certainly weren't at the time, but, given the emasculation of tracks, over-dominance by a few teams, and drivers who do not understand the history of the sport and drive like they're the only man on the track, they're beginning to look pretty good in retrospect. But I digress. Between the covers of this book you'll find incisive portraits of several great drivers (among them Phil Hill, Piers Courage, James Hunt, Ayrton Senna, and Jochen Rindt), car owners (the great Rob Walker, who long after his car-owning days were over wrote wonderful F1 journalism for Road & Track when R&T was still a great magazine), and others associated with the F1 scene (journalist Denis Jenkinson, F1's official doctor Professor Sid Watkins, and current F1 boss Bernie Ecclestone). He also writes of several races - the great slipstreaming duel at Monza in 1971, the first win for Renault in 1979, Dallas 1984 which ended with Nigel Mansell trying to push his car over the finish line in the blazing heat. As an added incentive, there are sections of black and white and color photographs. More and more nonfiction books seem to be doing away with illustrations, and with F1 being the visual spectacle that it is, we can be glad that Roebuck and his publisher resisted this new and unfortunate trend. Turn to the section of color plates and feast your eyes on the first photograph - Fangio in the Maserati 250F at Monaco in 1957. The greatest driver, the greatest car, the greatest race; one picture says it all. Highly recommended to anyone interested in Formula One.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fascinating stuff!
When I first saw this book's title, I nearly gave it a pass, thinking it was just one more in an already well-covered niche. But Nigel Roebuck's name was enough for me to chance it.(If you've read his columns you know he's always interesting.)This book is really unique.Despite the title, it's not an attempt to condense a history of 50 years of racing. It's more like a collection of essays about people and events that are not well covered elsewhere.I've read a LOT of books about F1 (cars, teams, drivers, ...) but each chapter of this book had new and intriguing things to say.It was a really enjoyable read, as well. ... memories, but I learned more about those races than I knew then

Let me be clear: this is simply the best racing driver biography ever written. It's complete, well written, touching and objective at the same time, respectful to the dead. It's an amazing book. No doubt the writer is a big Villeneuve fan, but he managed to avoid being totally partial.

5-0 out of 5 stars What a great tool!
To those of you who are thinking about buying a new car consider this...

I just bought Billennium Cars on CD and boy did it help me choose the right vehicle. It's the most powerful and complete analysis tool Ihave ever seen on CD.You can research by make and model or by personalcriteria, read reviews and road tests, go through the spec sheets and mostpopular accessories, check out performance ratings, and do so much more. Oh yes... you can even calculate how much the car of your choice will costyou and give you the resale (trade-in) value on your existing car.

Butyou should see the pictures, the videos, 360 degree views, concept cars, 3Dshow, etc.The music is great! The Magazine section is very informativeand entertaining too.

Last but not the least, they have a 2001 SneakPreview corner complete with pictures, spec sheets and a brief outline oneach vehicle to be introduced in upcoming months.

I recommend it... it'sa great product! ... Read more
