5-0 out of 5 stars Great for beginners...perhaps for more experienced, too
I am new to the world of machine embroidery, altho' I've been sewing for 35 yrs.I was hesitant to begin, knowing there were lots of variables that needed to come together to make successful designs, and I didn't want to ruin anything. This is a great book if you are just starting out, and probably a great reference even if you are not.All the information you could want regarding types of materials, tools, and techniques is here.I was even having trouble when I was practicing a design I had downloaded, and this book helped me figure out what I needed to do to make it work.

5-0 out of 5 stars "Bible" for beginners!
I work in a store and teach embroidery & digitizing, this is absolutely THE BEST primer for people just starting out in machine embroidery, and it's a great reference manual for everyone else. It is not machine-specific, so no matter what you've got, you will find information in here to help you out. This is THE book I always recommend to newbies!

2-0 out of 5 stars Not what I expected.
I bought the book because I have a new Bernina emboidery machine, although this book has excellent photos, and step by step projects, it only shows designs and examples from most machine but Berninas. If you are trying to but a book as a reference for projects, this book is great. I will have to keep looking for something that shows at least one example on a Bernina machine, and more information on how to get designs from a computer, internet, and the use of the magic box. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Great book
I loved this book and my Grand daughter loved it too as soon as we got it home and read a bit, we were trying out some of the great designs. It really is a fun book even if you have been embroidering for a while. There is always something new to learn.

5-0 out of 5 stars Another great book
A great follow-up to Embroidery Machine Essentials. Clearly written and easy-to-follow instructions. If you know the basics and want to progress, this is a great project-driven book to invest in to work on your techniques.

4-0 out of 5 stars A super book, just not for a brand new beginner
I got this book to get me started in embroidery because in the title it said, "Basic Techniques".Really, her first book (which I got *AFTER* I got this one) is better for that. That said, it is a super book. There are super pictures, and she explains all the techniques very well. This book goes into more detail of how to do specialized embroidery projects. At first I was disappointed, because it was so thin. But it is filled with information. There is not too much repetition from her first book.If you have to choose only one of her books, then get the first one.If you are ready to do more advanced work, then move onto this one.It will put more umph into your embroidery.

The book also has a CD with a bunch of designs on it.I like the varity of the designs. She also explains very well how to tweak the designs and combine them to totally change the looks. So you really are getting a lot of information and designs for your money.Overall, I would recommend this book. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars The Art of Fabric Manipulation and Embellishment
The title of this book is misleading; a more apt title would have been - "The Art of Fabric Manipulation: using Machine Embroidery as Embellishment"

What this book offers is a wonderful view into the techniques of fine artists specializing in fiber/textile arts. Each page is richly illustrated with the artists' craft incorporating fine art techniques such as encaustics (paint, crayon), plastics, polymer clay on to fabric and lace. Most or all of the creations featured are one-of-a-kind pieces or benefit as exhibition pieces. If you consider yourself a fine artist with fabric, you will appreciate what this book has to offer in the way of fabric manipulation through sewing machine embroidery and fine art medium. The specific aspects of this book leads me to view this textbook as a professional monograph.

If you are looking for machine embroidery techniques to use with your computerized embroidery machine (Bernina, Pffaff, Brother etc), then I suggest you look into Embroidery Machine Essentials by Twigg and Goodall.

2-0 out of 5 stars Not what I expected!
I was dissapointed in the contents and projects in this book.Although beautiful, I think most were impractical.I also felt the book would be giving help and ideas for embroidery machines, not just embroidering on a standard sewing machine. While I would like to embellish cloth with embroidery, this book seemed beyond a beginner in scope and terminology.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent for both Beginners & Experts!
This is well planned and laid out book. It takes you through the basics and onwards to more advanced and interesting projects which will suit more adventurous stitchers, especially those involved in City & Guilds.Theauthor is concise and to the point in her instructions and the book is alsowell illustrated. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Great design ideas
This is a fabulous magazine!Every issue I enjoy the vast number of designs and techniques within each magazine. The directions are always clear, concise, and correct. Each issue always has a great variety of patterns.I gave this magazine only 4 stars (it probably deserves 4.5) because I enjoy reading about the individual quilters, how they came up with the designs, and how they chose the fabric.Qulter Magazine only gives each pattern a very brief, 1 or 2 sentence glimpse about the quilt.I think I would enjoy it more if the magazine gave more background information. It is a wonderful magazine nonetheless. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Great ideas for all levels
From the first time I picked this magazine up until now, I have been impressed with it.This magazine, unlike others, has great articles about quilters, techniques, fabrics, and everything else you can imagine that has anything to do with quilting. This magazine also showcases, in every issue, different quilting events that take place around the world. As a quilter, I've found that it is really great to see what other quilters have done to fabric. When it comes to the designs within the magazine, what I like best is that there are always a great variety of designs and techniques. Some magazines focus on the beginner level and throw in a couple of intermediate designs from time to time.I keep all of my magazines to use in the future, it is always my hope that I will, in the future, no longer be a beginner.I want those more challenging designs available to me--QNM does just this.

QNM is a wonderful magazine which is able to encompass all aspects of quilting, from beginners to more expert/challenging designs.

5-0 out of 5 stars Something I look forward to reading
I, too, have been subscribing to QNM for several years. I look forward to finding an issue in my mailbox. The magazine is a good mix of patterns, techniques, and products, and always a bunch of readers' quilts, too.

4-0 out of 5 stars Inspiring Quilters
I have been subscribing to QNM for several years now and am
always inspired by every issue. I especially like "Photo Finish"
(picture of an exquisite quilt on the last page). Each issue
also has a featured artist and pictures of some of their
creations which is very inspiring. I sometimes wish artists would
include some information on how they actually construct their
quilts, so I could try them too.
All in all, this magazine is well worth its subscription price. ... Read more
