I've looked for this "original" the treehouse book by david stiles, and can't find it....
    please help.

5-0 out of 5 stars WHO SAYS TREEHOUSES ARE JUST FOR CHILDREN!
What a delightful book filled with mystical wonder and beautiful photography. We generally associate treehouses with children and the exuberance of youth, but....I want one! My own space, a private place to recapture lost youth, a place to dream, recollect thoughts, be at one with the stars and the universe - how magical life could be. There is no question my talented husband could build one; though not a professional, he truly is talented at that sort of thing as a hobby. But, there is a chance I would appear in the backyard on a bright summer's morn, only to hear him exclaim, "Treehouse? You wanted a treehouse? I thought you said "birdhouse," and then I do have a problem because how would I ever fit through that that tiny little round hole in the centre? Even if he did get the plans right, there is also the off-chance my family would insist on building a safety net around the treehouse, just in case dear old granny fell OUT of her tree! Possibly, they would insist the resident counsellor also have her own "branches checked out," just in case she was missing a few twigs off the upper branch.

Well, whether you are simply dreaming or actually making a treehouse a reality, this is a wonderful book filled with beautiful photography and treehouses galore of every description. The authors have put extensive research into this intriguing and attractive book, so if you are fascinated by treehouses, this is a book you are sure to enjoy.

5-0 out of 5 stars Magical Craftsmanship and Time to Dream
I have read every one of Peter Nelson's books, and he is not only a beautiful writer, but also a gifted craftsman. If you want to dream about living in the trees or even make it a reality...each of these books will give you a wonder-filled ride through the pages as well as technical information and all the motivation you might need to build your own. The stories and photographs are breath taking and alive. I have been lucky enough to witness Peter Nelson's craftsmanship in person, but it also comes alive through the pages of all three of his books. Go buy each one of the books right away and see for yourself the wonder of "living out on a limb". Fantastic! ... Read more

    Editorial Review

One of the most winning and intelligent romantic comedies of the '90s, Shakespeare in Love is filled with such good will, sunny romance, snappy one-liners, and devilish cleverness that it's absolutely irresistible. At the 1999 Academy Awards, this dark-horse costume comedy sneaked off with sevenOscars, besting the highly favored Saving Private Ryan for Best Picture. With tongue placed firmly in cheek, at its outset the film tracks young Will Shakespeare's overwrought battle with writer's block and the efforts of theater owner Philip Henslowe (Geoffrey Rush, in rare form) to stage Will's latest comedy, Romeo and Ethel, the Pirate's Daughter. Most of the jokes in the first one-third of the film are along these lines: Will's anachronistic therapist session, a mug inscribed "A Souvenir from Stratford-Upon-Avon," Henslowe's battles to pay off his debts, and the backstage high jinks of pre-production. However, once Will sets his eyes on the beautiful Viola De Lesseps (Gwyneth Paltrow), joking takes a backseat to ravishing romance. Well, almost--turns out Viola wants to break into the world of male-only theater, and disguises herself as a young man to wangle herself an audition. She wins the part of Romeo and, after much misunderstanding, the playwright's heart. Soon enough, Will's pirate comedy becomes a beautiful, tragic romance, and Ethel is shoved aside for a woman named Juliet. Will and Viola's romance, however, is equal parts comedy and tragedy--he's married, and she's betrothed to the slimy Lord Wessex (Colin Firth), and it doesn't take an English major to figure out that it's not all's well that ends well.

Like Shakespeare's work itself, the film is instantly accessible to everyone, from the raucous groundlings looking for low comedy to the aesthetes hankering for some intellectual bite behind their entertainment. The way that Oscar-winning screenwriters Marc Norman and Tom Stoppard enfold their story within the parameters of Romeo and Juliet (and even Twelfth Night) is nothing short of brilliant--it would take a Shakespearean scholar to dissect the innumerable parallels, oft-quoted lines, plot developments, and thematic borrowings. And most amazingly, Norman and Stoppard haven't forgotten to entertain their audience in addition to riding a Shakespearean roller coaster. Director John Madden(Mrs. Brown) reigns in his huge ensemble with a rollicking energythat keeps the film's momentum going at top speed for its entire two hours. Along the way there are small gems to be found: Ben Affleck's riotous egotistical actor, Imelda Staunton's nimble nurse, and of course Judi Dench's eight-minute,Oscar-winning turn as a truly regal Queen Elizabeth. However, the key element of Shakespeare in Love's success rests on the milky-white shoulders of its two stars. Fiennes, inexplicably overlooked at Oscar time, is a dashing Will as we might expect him at the early stage of his career, bundled full of comedy and tragedy but unsure of how to harness his talent. And as for Best Actress winner Paltrow... well, nothing she'd done before could have prepared viewers for how amazing she is here. Breathtakingly beautiful, fiercely intelligent, strong-willed, and lovestruck--it's a performance worthy of Shakespeare in more ways than one. Bythe film's end, you'll be thoroughly won over--and brushing up your Shakespeare with newfound ardor. --Mark Englehart ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Shakespeare In Love
Shakespeare In Love is flawless. It is witty, funny, romantic, fast moving and very entertaining. The cast, acting, directing, editing, costumes, set direction, etc., could NOT have been any better than they already are in this film. The writers Marc Norman and Tom Stoppard are brilliant; and John Madden's directing made it all come together to create this masterpiece, which won seven Academy Awards including Best Picture. Joseph Fiennes and Gwyneth Paltrow's onscreen chemistry was believable. Miss Paltrow was well-deserving of her Oscar for her role as Lady Viola. This is still her best performance ever. Judy Dench, and Geoffrey Rush made their characters come alive by their talented portrayals; and everyone else in the cast played a character that made the film full of diversity. The story of Romeo and Juliet is told in a new perspective. We see the play from start to finish through the characters' eyes, as they rehearse and perform it; and it is Shakespeare's writing of this play that moves the story along. If you don't think you like Shakespeare, don't let the title of the film keep you from seeing it. You are sure to enjoy this film, and films this fantastic don't come around very often. Enjoy the movie!

5-0 out of 5 stars Now I understand the oscar.
At Oscar time I couldn't understand why Private Ryan didn't win - now I do. I watched this movie four times in a row, went out and bought it as soon as it became available. The costumes are divine and the music is wonderful but the stars and the script truly make this come alive. Tom Stoppard and Marc Norman are gods. The story unveils itself with perfect timing and wonderful lyricism. Lines and scenes from numerous Shakespeare plays are beautifully interspersed to bring the movie to it's wonderful, sad conclusion. Gwyneth Paltrow is dazzling and luminescent and wonderfully complemented by Joseph Fiennes - I wish I new he existed before this. Imelda Staunton as Violas personal maid is divine, Geoffrey Rush is a treasure. Even Ben Affleck shows a new, meladramatic side (it really suits him). Everybody is wonderful. I really loved this film. As to that special something which makes it all work so well - "It's a mystery".

5-0 out of 5 stars Hollywood Takes On Shakespeare
This won the Oscar for Best Picture in 1998. Stars Joseph Fiennes and Gwyneth Paltrow as the romantic partners William Shakespeare and his Muse, with Dame Judi Dench as Queen Elizabeth I. This is a lush film to look at in many respects. The authentic period costumes is a nice touch. The film is mostly set in the theatre of Shakespeare's day. At this time, there were no female actresses. Only men were involved in theatre. Men played the role of women. Nowadays, it's twisted to think the first Romeo and Juliet were two men. The movie has no accuracy or truth to actual historic account. William Shakespeare was never romantically linked to the character Gwyneth Paltrow plays.

The whole thing is a fictionalized, dramatic melodrama that never took place. William Shakespeare was married to Anne Hathaway but there is evidence he was unfaithful and loved the Jewish keyboard player "Dark Lady" of whom he writes about in his sonnets. The movie is merely Hollywood taking on Shakespeare and it has since been used in English courses throughout the US. Shakespeare is enacted by Joseph Fiennes who is doing a terrific job. However, I don't much care for Gwyneth Paltrow's performance, no matter how much Oscar appeal she was said to circulate. She comes off as pretty wooden and the typical romantic heroine straight out of a bodice ripper, romantic novel. All she does is fall in love for Shakespeare and even goes to the lengths of dressing as a man to be near him during production of Romeo and Juliet. Judi Dench, a sublime actress though she is, does not LOOK anything like the real Queen Elizabeth. They could have cast an actress who looked the part more truthfully. Judi Dench did a better job as England's Queen Victoria in the movie "Mrs. Brown". She looked exactly like her and her fastidious, overly refined manners were distinctly Victorian. And one last thing, Ben Affleck had no place in this film. Did he think he would win an Oscar too or some form of recognition ? Ben Affleck is not right for this movie, no matter how small the role. It just seemed out of place and I would have preferred to see a true Shakespearean legend in this movie like Sir Ian McKellen. But it's a movie that has a unique charm. The music is also very beautiful. Be sure and get the soundtrack if you really liked the music for this movie. ... Read more

    Editorial Review

Hollywood's legendary "woman's director," George Cukor (The Women, The Philadelphia Story), transformed Audrey Hepburn into street-urchin-turned-proper-lady Eliza Doolittle in this film version of the Lerner and Loewe musical. Based on George Bernard Shaw's play Pygmalion, My Fair Lady stars Rex Harrison as linguist Henry Higgins (Harrison also played the role, opposite Julie Andrews, on stage), who draws Eliza into a social experiment that works almost too well. The letterbox edition of this film on video certainly pays tribute to the pageantry of Cukor's set, but it also underscores a certain visual stiffness that can slow viewer enthusiasm just a tad. But it's really star wattage that keeps this film exciting, that and such great songs as "On the Street Where You Live" and "I Could Have Danced All Night." Actor Jeremy Brett, who gained a huge following later in life portraying Sherlock Holmes, is quite electric as Eliza's determined suitor. --Tom Keogh ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A musical masterpiece
"My Fair Lady" is the legendary director George Cukor's crowning achievement. Every element of this movie works, from its sumptuous photography by veteran cameraman Harry Stradling, to the glorious costumes and sets created by Cecil Beaton. The music is incomparable. Frederick Loewe's melodies are lovely and infectious and Alan Jay Lerner's lyrics are every bit as witty and touching as the dialogue originally written by playwright George Bernard Shaw for "Pygmalion". "My Fair Lady" is the musical version of "Pygmalion".

The transformation of the illiterate, unwashed Eliza Doolittle into the breathtaking "Fair Lady" of the film's title is inspiring to see. This is one of Audrey Hepburn's best roles, and she is perfection as Eliza Doolittle. She is thoroughly convincing as the Cockney flower girl who transcends her humble roots to end up dancing with a prince at an embassy ball. Hepburn expertly translates Eliza's tenacity, vulnerbility, intelligence, and grace into a beautiful and timeless performance.

Yes, it's true that Julie Andrews (who created the original Eliza on Broadway) was bypassed for this role. However, this was purely a business decision made by studio head Jack Warner. He did not want to risk such a lavish, expensive production on a relative newcomer such as Andrews was at the time. So he went with the safe bet, Hepburn, as Eliza Doolittle. Audrey was an established star with a great track record.

But Andrews soon recovered from this disappointment to make two blockbusters of her own, "Mary Poppins" and "Sound of Music". Not a bad trade-off I'd say.

Anyway, I enthusiastically recommend that you buy "My Fair Lady" on DVD or VHS. It is one of the best musicals ever written for stage or screen. You'll see what I mean.

5-0 out of 5 stars Audrey Hepburn Was Probably The Best Choice.
MY FAIR LADY is a musical adaptation of Bernard Shaw's play PYGMALION.

It enjoyed a long and successful run on Broadway with Julie Andrews starring as Eliza Doolittle. Julie was replaced by Audrey Hepburn for the movie. This was of course a major change which was met with much skepticism. Audrey turned in a superlative performance although her singing voice was provided by Marni Nixon. Rex Harrison in the role of Professor Higgins proved to be as good in the film as he was on the stage. Stanley Holloway was superb as Alfred P. Doolittle.

The movie walked off with most of the Academy Awards in 1964 winning Oscars for Best Picture, Best Actor (Rex Harrison), Best Director (George Cukor), Color Cinematography, Color Art Direction, Sound, Adapted Musical Scoring and Color Costume Design. Nominations were also received for Best Supporting Actor (Stanley Holloway), Best Supporting Actress (Gladys Cooper), Adapted Screenplay and Editing. Ironically Julie Andrews won the Oscar for Best Actress in that same year for her appearance in MARY POPPINS.

Some of the more interesting DVD features are the commentary by Marni Nixon and the alternative versions of two songs using Audrey Hepburn's own voice.

2-0 out of 5 stars 2-disc or not two discs
WARNING: All the five stars refer to the movie itself, and does not address the issue of whether paying for the second disc is a rip-off. Five stars for the single disc version was richly deserved. I had half expected the 2 disc version to have DTS since they shifted virtually all the extra features from disc 1 to disc two. The only thing left on disc 1 was the movie, same commentary, same subtitles and audio track. For some inexplicable reason, the single disc version was among the Amazon top 100 discs in 2002 for some time, although it has been
out since the mid-1990s. Amazon's editor was correct when he said the main attraction of the 2nd disc was the 58 minute Documentary hosted by Jeremy Brett. That is about all, folks, and it was a pretty boring documentary. A concise version of this documentary would be "The Fairest Fair Lady" which is already in the single disc version.
You already have the AUDREY HEPBURN VOCALS in the single disc version. The rest of the stuff in disc 2 is usually given away FREE, like in Gladiator, Last Samurai, Master and Commander, where one viewing of the stills is more than enough.
Now, the sellers of disc 2 have actually REMOVED the CAST AND CREW section from the one disc version. This Cast and Crew with filmographies and biographies contain a huge chunk of valuable information including the fact that Audrey's given name was Edda, not Audrey. Do not throw away your one disc version. If you bought the 2 disc version, you might want to buy the single- disc version to find out where Audrey Hepburn was born, won the Oscar and got nominated. What were the other actors like Wilfred Hyde-White doing other than My Fair Lady.
I tell you what I like about the 2 Disc version:
    1. the interviews with Audrey Hepburn and Rex Harrison at the 1963 production Kickoff Dinner, with a couple of jokes from Mr Warner.
    2. George Cukor directing Baroness Rothschild: a Henry Higgins coaching Eliza Doolitle parody. The audio track ran for only a few minutes, and I had a new found respect for Directors. Even a Baroness needs lessons in elocution. When I watch the movie again, I will imagine George Cukor speaking using the actors and actresses as his instrument. So that is how Cukor's actresses got their Oscars.
    3. The Los Angeles Premiere in B&W is a few minutes of interesting distraction.

The rest of Disc 2 is really scraping the floor of the store-room. For those who already own the single disc edition, and do not have disposable income to burn, get the 2 disc edition of the TEN COMMANDMENTS instead. For the price of 5 commandments (about half the price of the 2 disc My Fair Lady), you will get more than double the info, making it look like "the TWENTY COMMANDMENTS". That is where a second disc is not a money making exercise: thou shalt not steal from gullible dvd buyers.

Rex Harrison Golden Globe Acceptance is a clip from the Andy William's show, where he apologised for not being at the real event, so he accepted it on AW's show. Shame.

Academy Awards Cermony Highlights: just one minute or less of Mr Warner accepting the oscar for best picture.

So two stars for the additional info on disc two. I would buy anything remotely related to my favourite musical, but if I were to search my heart for value added, I would say two extra stars is very very generous. Now, if ever they come out with a DTS version, we will have to throw the whole TWENTY COMMANDMENTS at this bunch of crooks.
Do you really need Martin Scorsese and Andrew Lloyd Weber's comments to supplement your own? ... Read more

    Editorial Review

Michael Caine was robbed of an Oscar. He gives his finest performance ina decade as big-talking small-time agent Ray Say, a paunchy, pale life of the party hiding his desperation under gold chains and cool bravura. When he hears the almost magical voice of Jane Horrocks's meek little LV (short for Little Voice) fill her bedroom with the rich voice of Judy Garland, he sees his ticket to the big time. Little Voice is ostensibly LV's story, and in fact the original play was written for Horrocks, whose amazing vocal impressions of Garland, Shirley Bassey, and Marilyn Monroe (among others) form the centerpiece performance of the film. But as directed by Mark Herman (Brassed Off), the story of this mousy girl who shuts herself in from a bellowing world is just as overwhelmed by the bombastic characters as LV herself. Brenda Blethyn babbles a blue streak as LV's overbearing mother, Mari, an aging widow who escapes her unhappiness in carousing and becomes almost pathologically jealous when Ray's attentions turn from her to LV. As Ray puts his dreams on the line for LV's showcase, he reveals his true self: a venal man who spits and barks out his bottled-up anger in an astoundingly bile-filled delivery of Roy Orbison's "It's Over." The showstopping moment once again overwhelms LV's tale, but Caine's performance is so astounding it seems a fair trade. --Sean Axmaker ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars An emotional masterpiece!
Astounding performances lift this movie and make it soar! Michael Caine portrays perhaps the most vile character of his career with a range of nuance and expression that would challenge even the most adept actors. It might well be his best work ever! But his sleazy Ray Say would be just another manipulative has-been were it not for the work of Jane Horrocks' Little Voice. Ms. Horrocks doesn't just recreate the voices of Judy Garland, Marlilyn Monroe and numerous other singers, she practically channels them in one of the most unique performances I've ever seen.

Little Voice or LV for short is a severely withdrawn young woman whose response to an earlier trauma has rendered her mute but for an ability to sing in the voice of past stars. Her mother, Brenda Blethyn, is accepting of this until linking up with Caine's struggling agent, Ray. The two seek to exploit LV, albeit for differing reasons; Mom wants her to succeed at something, while Ray sees nothing but profit in a client with more potential than his current stable of strippers and hack comics.

Ewan McGregor appears as an equally shy telephone repair man, with Jim Broadbent as a club owner that is every bit as low brow as his clientele. Beyond the marvelous characterizations, the film's setting in a northern England city makes for a setting of pathos and futility that has you rooting for LV to escape not only her emotional prison but the physical one of her family and environment. Horrocks will have your heart within the first five minutes and she never lets go.

5-0 out of 5 stars A REMARKABLE FILM...
Michael Caine, Brenda Blethyn, Ewan McGregor, and Jane Horrocks give absolutely stellar performances in this wonderfully quirky film. The title of the film refers to Jane Horrocks' character who is called "Little Voice" or LV, for short.

LV is a mousy, meek, painfully shy and reclusive little thing with an itty bitty speaking voice. She is totally overwhelmed by her brazen and [common] mother, Mari (Brenda Blethyn), who treats LV with scarcely concealed contempt. Part of that contempt is fueled by LV's devotion to her late father's memory and her fondness for old time musical stars. She has a collection of records by those long ago stars, that she plays over and over, a collection that she apparently inherited from her beloved father.

Her passion for this music drives her mother crazy, as it seems to remind Mari of her late husband, whom she apparently held in the same regard in which she holds LV. Only Billy (Ewan MCGregor), the local telephone repairman, a sensitive, young man who trains and raises pigeons as a hobby, seems to talk to LV as if she were a sentient being.

Mari begins dating Ray Say (Michael Caine), an over the hill, has been talent scout. Mari is pathetic, as she tries desperately to hang on to whatever vestiges of her youth remain. Ray, a sleazy opportunist, who thinks that he is God's gift to women, does not exactly reciprocate Mari's lavish affections. I cannot, however, think of two people who deserve each other more.

One day, LV is in her room singing, and Ray overhears her, but what he hears is "Judy Garland". It seems that LV can sing and sound exactly like those old time musical stars. Ray is in seventh heaven with his discovery. You can almost see the dollar signs in his eyes. He will do whatever it takes to get LV on stage, though his unctiousness towards her only serves to fuel Mari's jealousy of Ray's attention to her daughter.

Ultimately, Mari and Ray band together, however, as LV is their meal ticket to fame and fortune, if they can only get her to overcome her shyness and reclusiveness. They do not, however, understand why she sings. It is this lack of perception that that will, in the end, be their undoing.

Nonetheless, LV goes on to give one of the most show stopping performances ever to grace center stage. The transformation is incredible. Jane Horrocks gives a performance to be remembered! The only question is whether Ray and Mari can get LV to sing more than once. See the movie and find out for yourself. This is, without a doubt, an exceptional film.

3-0 out of 5 stars Jane Horrocks is remarkable
Jane Horrocks is a British comedian who amongst her many talents is a great mimic of female vocal artists. This film was originally a stage play based around her.

The plot of the film is simple. Jane plays Little Voice a young woman who lacks self confidence and whose life has been destroyed by an overbearing and grotesque mother. The mother continually belittles her daughter who is so lacking in any social sills that she sits in her room each night playing old 50's and 60's records owned by her father. It would seem that the father was also destroyed by the mother. She sings along to these records and is able to mimic such greats as Billie Holiday, Judy Garland and Marilyn Munro. (Okay Marilyn Munro was not a great but you know what I mean)

Michael Caine plays a seedy music entrepreneur who is limping along in obscurity heading career wise somewhere worse than obscurity. He has a brief drunken fling with Little Voice's mother and hears her voice coming from her room. He immediately sees her as an unexploited talent that might just bring him back into the game.

The film centres on a concert organised by Caine and its aftermath. Broadly the film is a morality tale in which the mother and Caine get what is coming to them and Little Voice is able to achieve something more than fame and that is normality.

The film is both good and bad. Horrocks at its centre is brilliant and it is her talent that is responsible for everything good about it. Her performance scenes are breathtaking made more remarkable by the use of her own voice. It is the other characters and the rest of the film that is the drag. The morality tale is rather telescoped and the character of the mother a repellent and grotesque rather than being real. The end a little bit of an anti-climax. One would imagine that this stems from the difficulty of converting the play to a film.

Never the less the performance of Horrocks is so strong and the premise so clever that the film is worth looking at despite its faults. ... Read more

Ordinarily, it pays to be wary of collections such as these, which often promise a lot but deliver a mishmash of disconnected excerpts. This disc, however, is something of an exception: you really do get just about all of Puccini's best arias, which is possible, because he didn't write so many operas that choosing the best moments becomes a matter of the producer's personal taste. Also, Puccini's operas are so popular that every major label has excellent complete recordings of all of them, so in making this compilation it was possible to cast from strength: all the singers here are fine. In fact, the only proviso that needs to be made before you rush out and add this disc to your collection is that it's wrong to assume that all of Puccini's best tunes lie in his arias. The opening 10 minutes of any one of his operas will tell you that's not true. So by all means enjoy this disc--then start sampling the operas complete. --David Hurwitz ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Only London Records could do it...
I'd have to say that London Records has the best opera recordings overall, and it's no wonder why they were able to form such a magnificent compilation of Puccini's most listened to arias on this CD. I recommend it to any opera fan, whether novice or expert, because what London did is use the best singers for each aria.

Your favorite singers might be Luciano Pavarotti, Renata Tebaldi, or Franco Corelli, and you might have complete operas sung by them, but this CD makes less-popular singers known, such as Pilar Lorengar, and demonstrate how well each singer sings the aria that they sing the best. For example, the song "Un bel dì vedremo" from Madama Butterfly has been sung by just about every famous soprano out there (Maria Callas, Renata Scotto, Renata Tebaldi, etc.) but one soprano whom I've never heard of sings this aria in the most enchanting way i've ever heard.

More examples include Pilar Lorengar singing "Ch'il bel sogno di Doretta" from La Rondine, and Gianna D'Angelo singing "Musetta's Waltz" from La Boheme. And don't worry, the big stars sing their best arias, too: Luciano Pavarotti blows you away his "Nessun Dorma" from Turandot and Jussi Björling makes you want to cry with his "Ch'ella mi creda libero e lontano" from La Fanciulla del West.

Finally, I just have to say that this CD is a must. London Records carefully chose each singer with their best arias to perform and this CD, and most importantly, EVERYONE is in their prime here. There isn't anything bad to say about this CD except that I wish there was more on here, but what can you expect from one CD? I also wish that a little bit of Maria Callas was on here, but then again, she is only on EMI CD's and this is a London Recording, oh well, just buy all of her recordings anyway :-)

I hope this helped whoever is reading this. I'd also like to hear your comments, so email me.

4-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful Performance but Average Recording Quality
I love opera! I love Puccini! Not only is the vocalism important to me, but the quality of the recording as well. I enjoy my hi-tech sound system. I like to feel as if I am sitting in the front row of the first balcony when I listen to opera. This CD is excellent! The vocalists were well chosen. The technical performances are eloquent and emotional, as Puccini should be. However, the quality of the recording is not very good. No matter how you adjust your sound system, the recording is a bit tinny and as a result, the emotional high points of the arias are not as vibrant as they could be if the recording were of better quality. I would recommend this CD to anyone who loves Puccini and who is not as finicky as I!

    Editorial Review

A collection of vignettes, loosely based on the book by Dr. DavidRueben, written and directed by Woody Allen, Everything contains some very funny moments. It's easy to forget that the cerebral Allen excelled at the type of broad, Catskill, dirty jokes and visual gags that run amok here. It's also remarkable how dirty this 1972 movie really was--bestiality, exposure, perversion, and S&M get their moments to shine. The Woody Allen here, who appears in many of the sketches, is a portent of the seedy old Allen of Deconstructing Harry. Although the final bit, which takes place inside a man's body during a very hot date, is hilarious, most of Everything feels like the screen adaptation of a '70s bathroom joke book. Still, a must for Allen fans. --Keith Simanton ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Some incredibly memorable funny scenes
This movie is a series of short films, which makes it mostly good and partly bad. Who can say they ever expected to see Woody Allen dressed up as a giant sperm? However, the first film set in medieval times is classic Woody Allen stand-up type humor, Woody at his best. My other favorite short film is the one about the sheep. Gene Wilder does an amazing job of acting so serious and puzzled when the man says "I am in love with a sheep" and he says "...O-hhh...." I LOVE it!

3-0 out of 5 stars CONSUMER ALERT--DVD TRANSFER IS DEFECTIVE!!!!
This message applies to ONLY the DVD version of the movie "Everything You've Always Wanted To Know About Sex".

This Woody Allen movie is a classic. It's from a time that was far less politically correct than these times so the humor will definitely seem crude. It consists of 4 or 5 vignettes each proceeded by a title. The vignette about transvestites is not very funny whereas the final vignette with Tony Randall & Burt Reynolds is a classic!!

NOW THEN--> There is one vignette about Woody & a girl who can only achieve orgasm in public. It's very funny.

    BUT

The vignette is in Italian and is a parody of a Fellini movie. THE ONLY WAY THE PIECE MAKES SENSE IS IF YOU READ THE SUBTITLES AT THE BOTTOM OF THE FILM..BUT...

THE DVD VERSION DOES NOT CONTAIN THE SUBTITLES!!!!!!!!!

I don't know how this happened, but on my DVD, it was all spoken in Italian with NO subtitles!!! And there was no way to access English subtitles in the DVD menu! It makes absolutely no sense and the humor is totally missed without the subtitles! This inexcusable error destroys the enjoyability of the entire DVD!!

If you have the VHS version, stick with it.

DON'T BUY THIS DVD!!!!!!!!!!!! And write to United Artists or whoever put out this flawed DVD and tell them to fix it.

4-0 out of 5 stars just a silly funny move
Don't listen to Adi's review, calling the film "juvenile"
Adi should watch some of today's teen exploits to find a true juvenile movie.
This film was far beyond its time, and is a SPOOF, like many comedies. If you don't believe most of the reviews, just rent it first........have a few drinks, and you'll laugh hard......

    Editorial Review

Sometimes it's fun to take the albums of latter-day rockers and play spot-the-influence, and on Mama Said, it's like shooting fish in a barrel. "Always on the Run," with its punchy horns and emphatic vocals, is cribbed from Sly Stone. "What Goes Around Comes Around," with its understated arrangement and Kravitz's falsetto, is straight out of Superfly-era Curtis Mayfield. "Stand By My Woman" and "All I Ever Wanted," meanwhile, are so directly copped from John Lennon--lyrically, sonically, attitudinally--that it ought to be actionable. Younger fans might not care about any of this, of course, because in and of themselves, Kravitz's songs are tuneful, and they do rock. --Daniel Durchholz ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars The beginning of a darker Lenny Kravitz emerging
Lenny Kravitz's 1989 debut LET LOVE RULE was the ultimate in playing spot-the-influence & that was how his early music sounded. With time, he'd internalize his inspirations, but with his first few albums he hadn't learned that yet. Following up the great-but-no-masterpiece affair that was LET LOVE RULE wasn't going to be easy for Lenny & but he managed to do it one better with 1991's MAMA SAID.

Probably realizing his fixation with the '60s on LET LOVE RULE was a little much, Lenny decided to update himself a bit with some early 1970s soul on MAMA SAID. It was that change that would finally give Lenny some long-overdue commercial success.

"It Ain't Over 'Til It's Over" I'm sure shocked even Lenny with it peaking at #2 on the pop charts in 1991. The use of analog recording equipment no doubt contributed to this sounding like something you'd hear from your local oldies radio station than modern top 40. The novelty must have been quite inviting for listeners who weren't yet bombarded by the coming grunge storm from Seattle. The old-school sound is furthered on "More Than Anything In This World", "Stand By My Woman" & "All I Ever Wanted". Making these songs more interesting is the fact that Lenny's marriage to actress Lisa Bonet was crumbling at the time MAMA SAID was recorded.

The rock-tinged sound of the follow-up ARE YOU GONNA GO MY WAY (1993) is hinted on "Always On The Run" (which could have been on the soundtrack for any blaxploitation film), "Difference Is Why", "Stop Draggin' Around" & "What The [...] Are We Saying?". This also foreshadows the angry, darker soundscape of 1995's CIRCUS.

While the influences still continue to control Lenny a bit on MAMA SAID, the only real snags are those songs that sound like LET LOVE RULE outtakes. "Fields Of Joy", its mid-album reprise, "Butterfly" & "Flowers For Zoe" (written as a lullaby for Lenny's daughter) are somewhat enjoyable, but a bit out of place on an album that was supposed to be about slowly bring Lenny away from his hippie identity.

Some have called MAMA SAID Lenny Kravitz's divorce record, but it isn't all the way through. Of course, his marriage falling apart contributed to the darker tone of the record, but to say all of it is about Lenny trying to patch things up would be overestimating it. Granted, he is still trying to iron out the rough spots in his sound, but Lenny seems a bit more sure of himself than he did on LET LOVE RULE. Who knew that Lenny would finally blossom on his next album?

5-0 out of 5 stars Mama Is Right
Lenny Kravitz followed up his retro-rocking debut with another slice of retro-rock, Mama Said. The sounds are even more diverse on Mama Said as Mr. Kravitz plays some heavily r&b influenced songs. "It Ain't Over Till It's Over" is pure Philly Soul with its soaring strings and lush orchestration with Mr. Kravitz singing in a high falsetto. The song became his first top ten single peaking at number two. "Always On The Run" has a chunky guitar riff, blazing horns and a guitar solo courtesy of Slash from Guns 'N' Roses. "Fields Of Joy" starts out as a slow acoustic number before exploding with ringing guitar blasts. "Flowers For Zoe" is a pretty ode to his then baby daughter while "Stop Dragging Around" has a thumping bass and pulsating guitar. Mama Said continued and enhanced Lenny Kravitz's chameleon like ability to slide effortless in and out of music styles.

4-0 out of 5 stars My favorite of his.
As much as I really loved his debut, and really every album since, this is easily the one I like most. Front to back it's just excellent, and includes a good split between the hard rockers, and the soft ballads. The hits from this were "Always On The Run" and "It Ain't Over 'Til It's Over", but I like some of the others just as much. "Difference Is Why" has a cool guitar effect, and "What The F*** Are We Saying" is completely sweet as well. I also like the last track "Butterfly", which is a short love song, and one that I've put on many mixed-tapes. Though I think Lenny could do it, I think this one will be hard for him to top. ... 2-0 out of 5 stars The roses wilt
Although the umbrella looks stylish, I gave it to my wife for Christmas, we have had alot of rain. The Umbrella was soaking wet when we arrived at the restaurant, it started to drip on my wife's clothing, she was wearing winter white; eventually with pink stains from the dye of the roses coming off. It ruined her outfit. Caveat Emptor.

4-0 out of 5 stars This is an "Attention Getter" in More Ways than One
I love anything with roses on it, so when I saw this umbrella, I was overjoyed! It was more than enough to brighten up my rainy days. When I received my work of art, I was very pleased, the beauty is only enhanced by its closing. The first time it rained, I took it to work. Now, I am a pretty fancy dresser, and I have to say that I got jealous of my umbrella, it got more compliments than I did! However, as the day went on, the rain got heavier, and of course, the umbrella got soaked...it's wide enough to keep the rain off of me, but the roses left me with some pretty unflattering stains on my clothing. I would advise hosing it down before use, or wear dark clothing.(sshhhh...I still love my umbrella though)

5-0 out of 5 stars Great umbrella! Just soak it first
This is wonderful umbrella with a lovely wooden handle. The trick is to soak it in a bath first to remove excess dye before using it. I had no problems with it after this. ... Read more

    Editorial Review

While gardeners often start out with hybrid tea roses, they most often end up growing the healthier and supremely fragrant old roses. Who can resist their crumpled petals in soft watercolor shades and their penetrating fragrance of baby powder and cold cream, let alone their lengthy and flamboyant histories?100 Old Roses for the American Garden has pulled together a selected hundred of the best, with stunning color photographs and cultural information.

And the names--who could resist 'Alister Stella Gray' (a golden rambler), or 'Enfant de France' (a rose-pink hybrid perpetual dating from 1860)? You might want to track down 'Sydonie,' a shell-pink damask described as having deep, pervasive perfume and generous rebloom. This task will be made easier by the appendices at the back of the book listing mail-order sources for old roses, and public gardens that display them.

One reason so many gardeners end up enamored with old roses is that they don't need to be grown in a "rose ghetto" as do hybrid teas, but rather enjoy being mixed into borders with other plants. A chapter on companion plantings suggests perennials that work well as skirting for old roses, enabling the gardener to mix roses seamlessly into the garden picture. --Valerie Easton ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars 100 Old Roses For the American Garden
This book is fabulous. I am a beginner and it covers each rose in depth. At the front of the book is fascinating history on roses. Especially how roses were such a commodity in the 1600-1700 & 1800's. They even stopped a ship blockade to let the roses in.

5-0 out of 5 stars I keep grabbing this book
Although this book isn't all-inclusive (after all, the title is 100 old roses), this is the book I reach for first. It's great when I'm trying to find out more information on a rose in a catalog, or looking for an old rose for a specific spot. First of all, I can't resist the pictures (but they may be slightly misleading as in the case of Blanc Double de Coubert which I've never seen growing with the great cutting stem as shown). Second, the text makes for amusing reading. It's oppinionated, and I like that. Third, there's the handy Index of Old Garden Roses by Color in the back. It's actually a little summary: flower style, plant type, and class e.g. Madame Isaac Pereire: cupped, tall, Bourbon. Very handy. The only thing that would make this better is if it had scratch and sniff (unfortunately not realistic)...since scent is such a subjective thing (I was so hot for Louise Odier until I smelled her and was surprised to find that I didn't like the fragrance).

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent resource for gardeners
If you are interested in growing roses and want to try some that are not just your basic Hybrid Teas, this is a wonderful book to get. You will drool over the pictures and the text is excellent. The pictures take one page and are a gorgeous shots of the bloom with a long stem and leaves. On the opposite page is text which goes into great detail about the rose characteristics, growth patterns, habits, vigor, etc. It is an invaluable book when trying to decide what old garden roses to introduce to your garden.

This format is so beautful and so useful, that I have purchased all of the gardening books in this "series" by this publisher. It is rare to get such excellent photos in combination with such useful text.

I started growing roses about five years ago and became frustrated with Hybrid Teas because of blackspot and their generally fussy behavior and stiff, formal flowers. This book and Liz Druitt's book were instrumental in getting me to try old garden roses, and am I glad I did! I would highly recommend this to both beginning gardeners and experienced, alike. ... 1-0 out of 5 stars disappointing magazine
My son is interested in cooking - he thinks he'd like to be a pastry chef. He loves chocolate, so we ordered this magazine. After several months, the first issue arrived, along with the news that they were switching to a 4 issue/year format. At that rate, the subscription costs more than buying off the shelf. On the positive side, some of the recipes look interesting, though we haven't tried any yet.

1-0 out of 5 stars Poor delivery, poor material.
I agree with the other reviewer who says that the delivery is entirely unpredictable. I waited nearly a year after ordering to receive my first issue.

However, my big complaint is that I feel like I'm reading one big advertisement. There are very few recipes for the amount the magazine costs. Half of the magazine is filled with "new from..." or "useful new..." or "you should try new...". I personally don't find most of those gagets or chocolates or whatever interesting. I buy magazines for recipes. I got the subscription on the recommendation of a friend, but I was foolish to not preview a newsstand copy first.

One could spend the same amount of money on a good chocolate dessert cookbook and be occupied for much, much longer.

4-0 out of 5 stars something for everyone who enjoys preparing sweets, perhaps
Chocolatier is useful because, unlike conventional cookbooks, it's showcases current trends in desserts as well as traditional favorites. Its illustrations are beautiful and representative of the final product; its recipes are concise and have obviously been tested.

I personally appreciate the first few pages that highlight new cookware and supplements such as organic ingredients, new kitchen tools, cookbooks, and blurbs on restaurants and chefs.

Occasionally, however, I find that the issue is a little elementary (such as baking with pre-packaged mixes, ice cream, broken up candy bars, etc). I don't find this particularly challenging, and I don't like the idea of finding commercially identifiable items in my creations, but I'm sure that less accomplished cooks appreciate the short-cuts. Also, I can see how this type of issue could be useful to cook with a child or someone who is just starting out and might feel more secure with a "complete" and already purchased ingredient.

Because the issues arrive every second month, their arrival can be something less than timely -- and it is the kind of magazine that one anticipates, so this can be frustrating. However, mind have always arrived, eventually. ... Read more

    Editorial Review

Jane Austen's classic novel of 1813, Pride and Prejudice, still winsthe hearts of countless schoolgirls with its romantic story of Elizabeth Bennet and her Mr. Darcy. Now, the 1996 BBC miniseries is winning over adults, with its faithful adaptation, gorgeous scenery, and superb acting.

The essence of the story is the antagonism between Mr. Darcy, a wealthy single man who believes Elizabeth to be beneath him, and Elizabeth, who upon being insulted at a dance by the aloof Darcy refuses to associate with him in any manner. Austen evokes incredible tension with the wit and flirtation of the two characters, and director Simon Langton (who also directed Upstairs Downstairs) successfully translates the repartee and conflict in this six-hour miniseries. Dialogue, for the most part, is painstakingly replicated, except when fleshing out and smoothing for modern sensibilities was necessary. Darcy, for instance, is drawn out, giving his personality significantly more depth. The acting sweeps you away to Regency England: Jennifer Ehle (of Wilde) is convincing as the obstinate Elizabeth, who, despite her mother's attempts to marry her off, spurs the attentions of Darcy. And Colin Firth (of The English Patient) will have women everywhere longing for a Mr. Darcy of their own.

For those who have been on an Austen binge--enjoying such excellent adaptations as Sense and Sensibility and Persuasion--this miniseries will round out the ultimate Austen video library. For those new to these romantic period pieces, this version of Pride and Prejudice will have you hooked and longing for more. One caveat, however: plan to watch it in an entire day, because very few have the self-control to not watch all six hours in a single sitting. --Jenny Brown ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A marvelous adaptation of one of the great novels.
This A&E/BBC miniseries is a true masterpiece, bringing Jane Austen's most popular novel to life in a near perfect production. It has everything: authentic Regency Period atmosphere, costumes, settings, a beautiful musical score, excellent performances by a well-chosen cast. Andrew Davis's script does full justice to Austen's original. Colin Firth is excellent as Mr. Darcy, but Jennifer Ehle just takes my breath away with her magnificent performance, which catches every nuance of Elizabeth Bennet's character exactly right in every scene. It is a pleasure to watch all 4 1/2 hours straight through again and again. As a longtime devoted admirer of Jane Austen's works, I am very critical of any movies based upon her novels, but this has to be one of the very best adaptations of any major literary work.

5-0 out of 5 stars AMAZING!!
Wow!! This is just a fabulous adaption of Pride and Prejiduce! The length is a little daunting when you first start out but you come to realize that the length is what makes it great. Unlike other films that have to skip or shorten scenes to fit the 2 hour format this movie doesn't cut any corners. This movie rarely strays from Jane Austen's book. And that is how it should be. The witty talented Austen knew what she was doing. And it is wonderful to see a movie that acknowledges that. The characters both the main and the supporting are perfectly cast. Jennifer Ehle is the most fantastic Lizzy there could ever be. And colin firth is rather dashing as the misunderstood Mr. Darcy. Lizzy's parents and sisters are well represented as are the Bingleys and Mr. Colins absolutely steals the scene whenever he appears with his his ignorant humor. To top it all off the scenery is gorgeous (espacially Pemberly) and the sets seem to come right out of the book. It is best to watch the whole thing at once if you could set aside a Sunday afternoon. You won't be disappointed. As with the book itself I wish I could give this movie 1000 stars.

5-0 out of 5 stars I'M SO GLAD I WAITED FOR THIS DVD VERSION!
I've owned the two tape VHS set of this finely made BBC miniseries for several years and had practically worn it out with repeated viewings. I held off converting to the DVD version mainly due to the high cost, and am I ever glad that I did! This newly released 2 disc set is a vast improvement over the previous one if for no other reason than it is letterboxed in 1:85/1 format which really brings the story and characters into much sharper focus. One of the features I love best about DVD is the ability to review old favorite films with a clarity of image and sound which makes the entire experiance new and rewarding, and this beautiful version of PRIDE AND PREJUDICE is a great example. Jennifer Ehle and Colin Firth seem born to assay thier roles, leading a sterling cast of great British character actors in a spirited romp through the magnificent English countryside. Like Emma Thompson's award winning adaption of SENSE AND SENSIBILITY, this film really breathes life into Jane Austin's tale. It was well worth waiting to see it in this DVD transfer. ... Read more

Did you know that painted ladies (the butterflies, that is) taste with their feet and have 10,000 eyes? You and your kids will be fascinated by all you learn about these beautiful creatures with the Butterfly Garden from Insect Lore. The kit comes with a relatively easy-to-assemble observation chamber; supplies for feeding the butterflies (you provide only sugar and water); an informative booklet of clear instructions and butterfly facts; and a certificate for three to five free painted lady caterpillars. The metamorphosis from larva to butterfly takes about three weeks from when you receive the caterpillar larvae (which arrive in a small container with all the nutrients they need). Your children can watch the larvae increase dramatically in size, form chrysalides, and finally emerge into full-fledged painted ladies (it's suggested that they release the butterflies after a few days of observation). This would make a wonderfulactivity for families with kids of any age, but younger children will need help assembling the observationchamber and reading the instruction booklet. 5-0 out of 5 stars "Mom, can we get some more caterpillars, please?"
My son received the butterfly garden as a birthday gift. We were going out of town, so asked to have the caterpillars delivered at a later date. They came on the exact date requested! The caterpillars were very small the first day, but grew so quickly that I wondered if we could actually watch them grow before our eyes (it certainly seemed that way)! It took only one week for the chrysalides to form, and only one more week for the butterflies to hatch. There is no feeding required for the caterpillars (they arrive in a container with their entire food supply)--all the kids need to do is watch them! My son and daughter both woke up each morning and would come running to tell me how big the caterpillars were. Then they watched them form into chrysalides, and still watched them each day until they hatched. The day we released the butterflies, my son looked at me and said "I sure am going to miss my beautiful butterflies!...Mom, can we get some more?"

5-0 out of 5 stars Fun, educational, and really cool, too!
I bought this kit for my 5-year-old, but my 3-year-old wound up loving it every bit as much as the older one. The caterpillars arrive in a sealed container with everything they need--all you have to do is observe them. After a week, we placed the cocoons in the habitat, and out hatched five gorgeous butterflies. What's more, they began laying eggs within a few days, and before you know it, we had DOZENS of teeny-tiny baby caterpillars! Of course, we set them free outside (I'm no bug farmer), and we enjoyed painted lady butterflies throughout the rest of the summer. This kit provided my children with a wonderful, exciting learning experience that they will never forget!

    WOW! This thing is cool!
I recieved my Butterfly Garden yesterday and boy, was I excited! The pop-up mesh butterfly habita is so neat. I've always wanted one! I sent away for my caterpillars today. If you want to give something or get something GREAT, the Butterfly Garden is a good idea! :) ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful, informative book
I checked out several books from the library to complete my research on a butterfly garden for my backyard. This one book was the best, most informative, easiest instructions I found. I had a small area to work with, and 2 years later my butterfly garden is a beautiful sight to behold, and my personal treasure to work in and with. It's design follows Mr. Mikula's basic instructions, and to date we have had several different types of butterflies visit our garden. What a joy. Thank you, Mr. Mikula!!

3-0 out of 5 stars Beautiful book but misleading title
The photos are superb and the text interesting; if the title were "Common Garden Butterflies of the United States" I'd give it 5 stars. The existing title is very misleading, however. Only the most common U.S. butterflies are included and coverage of Canada is neglible.

    Editorial Review

Perhaps the most charming movie of all time, Amélie is certainly one of the top 10. The title character (the bashful and impish AudreyTautou) is a single waitress who decides to help other lonely people fix their lives. Her widowed father yearns to travel but won't, so to inspire the old man she sends his garden gnome on a tour of the world; with whispered gossip, she brings together two cranky regulars at her café; she reverses the doorknobs and reprograms the speed dial of a grocer who's mean to his assistant. Gradually she realizes her own life needs fixing, and a chance meeting leads to her most elaborate stratagem of all. This is a deeply wonderful movie, an illuminating mix of magic and pragmatism. Fans of the director's previous films (Delicatessen, The City of Lost Children) will not be disappointed; newcomers will be delighted. --Bret Fetzer ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Au-dela des mots!!!
Although I have studied French @ University to PhD Level & have therefore been influenced by French cinema, I can objectively say that Amelie is a movie that can inspire & mesmerise the most hardened anglophone. Perhaps one of great cultural changes of recent times has been Hollywood's embrace of more & more foreign language movies (Life Is Beautiful, Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon, Ring, Audition to name but a few). Amelie's appearance is therefore as timely & strategic as it is wonderful. The film embarks on a magical journey of a young & naive girl who works as a waitress in Montmartre & the quirks of her everyday life & the people with whom she encounters. Amusing & touching, & perfectly shot, the tight script & gripping colours & cinematography render this oeuvre a captivating watch which shall mesmerise again & again. Audrey Tatou plays the ingenue with such wit & charm (as the cheeky cover alone suggests) as a woman who influences others more than she wishes her own life to be influenced. Some of the most captivating scenes are Tatou dashing pebbles across the water (it's ony about 15 seconds long but majestically shot) & the character introductions at the beginning (her parents are wickedly hilarious) & the evil greengrocer & Amelie's revenge on him. If there's one movie you should consider purchasing it is definitely this. Perhaps my favourite French movie now (along with Les Visiteurs, Manon Des Sources & Cyrano de Bergerac), it shall get repeated plays on my DVD player. Great extra features too!

5-0 out of 5 stars Deliciously Irresistible Treat
Amelie is a delectable little French pastry that, I imagine, only the most hardboiled of cynics could totally dismiss. A treat for the mind, soul, eyes, & ears: delicious interiors drenched in lush colors (mostly reds and greens), a spirited soundtrack (lots of zesty accordion - but don't let you that put you off), an amusing cast of quirky characters, enchanted - and some rather disenchanted - romance, and a dash of intriguing mystery.

Young Amelie is a shy doe-like creature, the hapless offspring of two human oddities. One day she is struck with a revelation when she discovers a little boy's long lost box of treasures hidden in a secret compartment in her bathroom. Once she anonymously returns the item to the boy, who by now is middle-aged, and witnesses from afar his joy, she sets out on a quest to right the wrongs of her fellow human beings (even imagining herself as Zorro in one scene).

Along the way, Amelie stumbles across her soul mate who devotes much of his time scavenging for discarded strips of photos from photo booths and saving them in a scrapbook. Hmmmm, interesting hobby, oui? But will Amelie ever muster up the courage to actually encounter him face to face?

Ah, and what does Princess Diana's death have to do with any of these shenanigans? And who is the Glass Man and why does he paint the same thing over and over again? Who is the bald man in the red sneakers who seems obsessed with having his photo taken yet never keeps any of them? Will the nitwit with the tape recorder ever stop stalking Gina? Can anything cure Georgette's many maladies? Why would Suzanne rather eat human flesh than horse flesh? What happened to papa's garden gnome? And what on earth is hidden beneath the artichoke?

Watch this movie, folks, and find out the answers to these captivating enigmas and more. So so much more. I truly don't believe you'll be sorry.

5-0 out of 5 stars you must watch this!!
An uplifting, feel good love story with a message. Great acting and the camera work is incredible. This is one of those movies you could watch numerous times and never get sick of it. A definite must have for your DVD collection. ... Read more

Introduce a little outdoor tranquility indoors and enjoy the sights, sounds, and smells of thiscandle fountain. The elegant design includes everything you need to build your own calming light fountain, including a metallic poly fountain dish, polished river rocks, a wax tiered candleholder, twelvearomatherapy vanilla-scented tea candles, and a water pump with variable flow control. It only took us afew minutes to set it all up, and soon we were basking in a stress-free utopia, the sounds of the streetforgotten. The soft candlelight and soothing sounds of water are deliciously calming, while the fountainacts as a natural humidifier. The unique tea-light design ensures long-lasting use: simply change the tealights when they burn low. Our only caution is that the fountain should not be used in excessively hotrooms, since the wax tiers could melt. The fountain takes up a mere 8 by 9 inches of space on a desktop ortable, making it an ideal gift for those who want to integrate art and nature into their home. --ArielMeadow Stallings ... 3-0 out of 5 stars It's OK
Bought this for my mother for Christmas. I was a bit disappointed that the sound of the water spalshing was not as load as I thought it should be. This was initially. However, over time while visiting my mom, I noticed it sounds a bit louder now. I think more rocks are needed with the set. It looks very nice though.

4-0 out of 5 stars Calming and lovely, you can't go wrong with this candle
I received the candle fountain for christmas and had it set up and going in about 10min. Lovely vanilla tea-lites are great, with more than enough provided(most other companies only give one burn cycles worth)
I personally don't like water splashing out of the bowl or listening to a raging torrent of water...the pump for this product is blissfully quiet, and even on the middle setting the water trickles and tinkles gently back down to the stones...try creating "dams" and pockets with the stones to create different waterflows and sounds...
I agree with others, this is not a unit to light it and leave... I had it burning for at least 3 hours and noticed the "melting smell" too... I thought the pump might have heated up but realized the tea-lights had burned down and the metal cup was heating up the pillars...so YES-one must ALWAYS be attentive to candles when they are lit...
But overall..one of my most favorite gifts!!!

2-0 out of 5 stars Boring
This fountain could use a larger water pump to provide for a better cascading water effect. The water trickles out in small veins down the side of the stairs, but the water flow isn't very steady. I was sort of disappointed by this fountain.

On the plus side: The candle fountain comes with plenty of tea-lite candles in a vanilla scent. (For those having problems with the plastic tea-lite containers melting...try the metal-lined tea-lite candles. You can find these at any candle store. ... ... Read more
