Canon PowerShot S400 4MP Digital Camera w/ 3x Optical Zoom
    by Canon Cameras US
Average Customer Review: 4.0 out of 5 stars
    Electronics
    list price: $449.99

    Editorial Review

Canon's PowerShot range of cameras has always been strong, and the PowerShot 400 continues that tradition. The 4 Megapixel Canon PowerShot S400 digital camera is capable of taking still images at 2,272 x 1,704 pixels--enough for a good quality A4 print. Resolutions go down to 640 x 480 for images you might only want to look at digitally. You can also capture video at 320 x 240 and 160 x 120 pixels.

The camera is very small indeed--smaller than earlier PowerShot models, and is easily pocket sized. There is what at first might seem a bewildering array of buttons around the casing, but in fact these provide excellent one-button-press access to most of the most used features, such as the 3x optical zoom which goes up to 11x when combined with digital zoom features, the macro mode, settings for the flash and self timer. For more advanced features like changing the shutter speed, which it is great to be able to do on a digital camera; you do need to delve into the LED a little further, though.

Images are stored on CompactFlash card--the largest image can be a couple of MB in size so you'll need to think big when it comes to CF card size with this camera. The battery is removable, and a spare to carry in the pocket might be a good idea.

Canon supplies a range of desktop software for viewing, editing and making use of your digital images. As with previous PowerShot cameras, one of the tools works with the Stitch Assist mode on the camera itself in the production of panorama shots. Digital cameras get more advanced all the time, but we dare to say that the PowerShot S400 is probably the best pocket sized digital camera we've seen. --Sandra Vogel, Amazon.co.uk ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Stay Away from Canon PowerShot S400
I have had this camera for about a year and a half. The first problem occurred about 6 months after purchase. The connection on the camera was no longer in good shape. The only way that I could download was to use a card reader.Next, after another couple of months, a screw on the tele-photo switch broke causing difficulty in using the tele-phone switch at all.I had to hold down the switch every time I used it.Then, it started burning out batteries.I ended up having to buy three additional batteries. One burnt out the second time charging it.Next, after about a year and a half from the time of purchase, the card error problem occurred. It destroyed several 256 cards and it was no longer working as a camera at all.For $500 plus another $300 in extra cards and batteries, the camera is completely dead.Canon has not been responsive. It is obviously a "dog" as so many customers have complained about the same problems, especially the problem with fouling the memory cards. This is a complete failure in quality control on the part of the manufacturer (Canon)and a complete failure on Canon's part to back it up.For as reputable a company as Canon, it is a complete breakdown of confidence. They should be ashame of themselves for making this, for selling this and for not backing it up.So many have lost millions of pictures.

1-0 out of 5 stars Memory Card Error
My camera has died because of the memory card error too!I read back through the reviews and most were positive until Summer of 2004 when the memory card issues started popping up.It seems a bit suspicious when everybodies camera works so well at first and then dies immediately without warning???Seems like a Canon problem to me too.Programmed to stop functioning at 18 months after first use?

1-0 out of 5 stars Memory Card Errors
Do a little research on this and its successor, the S410 before you buy.My first year with my S400 was great.A little after that, Istarted to get Memory Card Error problems. At first, I tried reformatting the CF card using the camera, which sometimes worked.I then replaced the CF card, and that worked for about 2 weeks.I Googled Canon S400 memory card error and found lots of other S400 owners with the same problem. The fix I hear about most is using a USB card reader to reformat the card in FAT format.I've tried that, but the CF card still needs reformatting every now and then.So as it stands now, I can get the camera to work if I reformat the CF card, but I just can't tell when it's going do deal me another Memory Card Error.Totally unreliable. ... 2-0 out of 5 stars Not What It Used To Be
I've been reading Runner's World for several years now but I am going to stop.Month after month I'll look at the cover and get excited about an "article" they say is included in the issue, only to locate the "article" and find it is no more than either a fluff piece of information that must be targeted toward someone who has never ran so much as a city block in their life, or it is a three sentence answer to a reader's question that was sent in.Do these actually count as in depth pieces that warrant advertisement on the cover?

Furthermore, every issue is the same. There will be an article on losing five lbs. by the holidays/summer/race season - whatever month the issue happens to come out. There will be a shoe review (blah!).There will be a "Fifty Ways To Stay Motivated" piece - which is always the same commonsensical tips. And there will be a "Special Woman's Section" - which, when it shows up every single month, makes me wonder just how "special" it could really be.

Once in a while there will be a good recipe, or a decent (but way too short) article on a runner. However, you could save alot of money by only purchasing one issue of this magazine because, except for the pictures and graphics, all the articles will be pretty much the same month after month.

3-0 out of 5 stars Only one issue's experience
I bought the issue because I was told there was an article about beginning runners training for their first half marathon. The article was mentioned on the cover. It turned out to be a fluff piece giving reasons why it was better to run a half marathon than a full one for your first long race.I didn't find a lot more depth.Motivational, some general ideas, but I didn't come away with a lot of technical information.

5-0 out of 5 stars Your Best Friend
Sometimes you need a friend to help you out the door and to motivate you to start your running program. This magazine did exactly that for me.Along with its thorough web-site, runnersworld.com, I started a running program that took me from running two minutes at a time to running a 5K (3miles) in twenty-two minutes in only fifteen weeks.Unlike many other magazines, this one does not over burden you with excessive advertisements and random space fillers. All articles are helpful and cover a broad spectrum of practical and entertaining subjects. The best magazine I have ever encountered, you won't be able to put it down! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars BEST BASKETBALL MAGAZINE OUT!!!!
To any basketball fan reading this--you need to subscribe to this magazine or atleast buy it monthly, if not you are missing out on the best coverage of professional basketball.About 80% of this magazine is NBA, about 20% high school, college, and womens basketball. The writers in this magazine do a great job on giving you stories on and off the court of the athletes.

Sports Illustrated doesnt even come close to what this magazine has and The Inside Stuff is more on a pre-teen level.

Every issue of Slam has an article with an Old School Player which they interview, the cover story usually interviews the athlete, there are about 2 to 3 more full sized articles along with the "Punks" section which features high school b-ball players or schools.Plus much more.

Every once in a while they will release a special issue that isn't included in the subscription.... They have had a Streetball Issue, (another is on the way), they have released 3 KICKS ISSUES (all about shoes), They have also released the 50 GREATEST DUNKERS ISSUE, along with the 50 Greatest Players Issue.
Oh, the 10th anniversary issue just came out a couple of months ago and a couple of years ago they released the 50th issue in which they had 3 special covers of Jordan dunking from the freethrow line.(These are now framed and on my wall!!!)

Slam covers every aspect of the sport of basketball, if you are lookin for a good basketball magazine to subscribe to this is the one.The pictures in here are also the best, no one can compete with this mag!!!!

2-0 out of 5 stars its a pretty good magazine
ok so there are to much advertisments but the pictures rock some of the best ive seen.and the articles rock as well.

    GO JAZZ

4-0 out of 5 stars Everything hoops
I read a lot of the different sports magazines, especially anything about basketall, and this is basically the only one that really tells me what I want to know about the game and keeps me entertained at the same time. Slam has a lot of features on different players, and not just NBA, but college and even high school players. Slam is the first place that I read about LeBron James and most of the other high school players who came into the NBA. If you love basketball, you'd definite love Slam. ... Read more

    Editorial Review

Long known as the "bible of baseball," The Sporting News remains a weekly treasure trove of information for the voracious sports fan. In-depth articles are balanced with easily digestible sidebars and columns, and team-by-team capsules (contributed by local writers) include wrap-ups of the week's action and plenty of stats for fantasy addicts. MLB, NBA, and NFL team capsules are maintained through the off-season. The emphasis, of course, is on the big three--baseball, basketball, and football--but hockey and NASCAR receive their due as well. Special preseason issues are published for many sports. --David Horiuchi ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars good general coverage sports mag
TSN is an excellent sports magazine for the general sports fan.
It covers nearly all the sports in and out of season, including NASCAR autoracing.A sports fan will find something of interest in every issue.I was able to find a free subscription which makes it ever better!I would recommend it to any sportsfan who wants to read about his favorite teams or sport.

3-0 out of 5 stars Magazine Good, Cust Service poor
The magazine itself is quite good. Unlike SI, Sporting News does not cater to perosnalities and have horrible bias. SI is really bad that way. But SN has problems with Cust Service. I had 3-4 issue difference in what I had and what I should have had, but it never got corrected. So I did not review

4-0 out of 5 stars Nice mag
The Sporting News focuses on MLB, NFL, NBA, NHL, and men's collegiate football and basketball, with the occasional odd article or bit on golf. Even the major general articles (Best SportsTown, for instance) focuses on these sports.

In addition, the mag offers a good dose of stats and breaks down each sport by team, so you can read up on your fav or dig out the fantasy info you need.

Also, TSN highlights most major sporting events during the year, such as the NCAA hoop tourney, Super Bowl, Spring Training, etc., and includes additional material during their regular issues.

This is the best all-purpose sports weekly in my opinion. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Golf's Best Magazine Publication
Golfers share many things in common and one of these is an often fanatical love for the game. For these types, nothing can take the place of heading to the nearest golf course, but Golf Digest comes very close. This magazine contains over 200 pages each month, dedicated exclusively to the sport of golf.

The things that set Golf Digest apart from the competition are the numerous articles about learning and improving your game and the personal stories and interviews. Other golfing publications attempt to help you learn, but they often get too mechanical. Golf Digest shows you how to improve your game with tips from professionals, including some of the star- studded members of the golfing elite like Tiger Woods.

Besides all the tips and tricks, Golf Digest also shows the personal side of the sport with interviews and more intimate stories about the many colorful personalities in the game. This personal dimension adds greatly to the magazine's overall appeal, providing great reading material to complement the more instructional side of the magazine.

Golfing Digest may not be as great as a day spent on your favorite golf course, but it comes close. I consider it the best publication of its kind and I recommend it to anyone with an interest in the game.

5-0 out of 5 stars 5 stars from a subsrciber of over 20 years
Over the many years that I have subscribed to Golf Digest, I've come across extremely useful information from world class teachers and the top players that has improved my game. In addition to appreciating the superb teaching article, I always look forward to the new product editions. Equally informative and entertaining are the various feature article and interviews. Golf Digest is simply the best golf magazine!

2-0 out of 5 stars All around
Golf Digest is the quintessential all around golf magazine. They write about lessons, travel, equipment and golf news. They seem to be a little biased recently with the acquisition of many of today's top golf stars, by not writing anything negative about them or their sponsors, i.e. Tiger and Nike. They are usually right on with their reviews of places to play and I enjoy how they pick one location and focus on it.I.e. Cape Cod, the courses that you can play and other activities that are around the vicinity.I wish they would choose some more exotic locales such as South Africa, New Zealand, Australia and South America though. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Okay only if you're a serious gearhead
In my opinion Road & Track is just okay. While they test the
newest cars and always have the lastest news on the auto industry, the magazine entirely lacks humor and is plain boring. By itself its okay but not when compared to its rivals such as Motor Trend and its sister magazine Car & Driver- which is in my opinion the best by far. Also, Road & Track probably doesn't test half as many cars a year as Car & Driver does and they don't test SUVs, minivans or pickup trucks as does its rivals. Road & Track's writing style can also tend to get boring with not an ounce of humor talking strictly about 'technical' stuff. The editors are also seem to be afraid to criticise poor performing cars, giving instead praise to every car they test.
If the traits of Road & Track forementioned above don't bother you in the slightest, then feel free to subscribe- but make sure you purchase a newsstand copy first just to make sure you like it- otherwise buy Car & Driver or at least Motor Trend.

5-0 out of 5 stars Automotive Journalism at its best
I'm a subscriber to Road & Track, Car and Driver, and Motor Trend. Simply put, R&T is the one I look forward to the most each month.

If you're looking for a well-rounded auto magazine, this is it. In R&T you'll find:
    -Road Tests and First Drives.
-An excellent "Ampersand" monthly feature with all the latest info on future cars and prototypes.
-News about the latest races and drivers.
    -Top-notch photography and art.
-Witty columnists. (see Side Glances by Peter Egan)
    -The occasional technology-related feature.
-Classic cars, classic drivers, classic tracks. The best historical content in the business.
-Very little content on SUVs. (a positive in my book)

    The competitors:
Car and Driver has substantially more road tests and previews, and some good specialty features on a pretty regular basis, but hardly anything on racing and history.

Frankly, Motor Trend isn't anything to write home about. The articles are shorter and less captivating, they can't seem to settle on a design theme, and they also have a lack of racing and historical content.

If I had to pick just one, Road & Track would definitely be my choice.

3-0 out of 5 stars Maybe I'll like it more when I'm older
I'm under 30 and don't remember all the old cars that some of the journalists have such fond memories of.Also, this is a very serious magazine.I can see how the articles and their serious, "just the facts" style can appeal to some people, but I like the lighthearted and funny style of C&D.R&T sometimes seems very dry to me.MT tries to be funny, but it never works.MT writers remind me of people with really bad senses of humor that think they are funny. They wind up just being annoying.I would place this magazine as a middle of the road magazine.Sportscar international and C&D are #1, R&T is in the middle, Automobile slightly lower and MT is the bottom of the barrel ... 2-0 out of 5 stars Image vs. Content
I'm not sure who's at the helm of this operation but I'd be willing to bet they don't get Outside too often. Not to be too cynical about it, but I just don't find this mag to be as USEFUL as it was before. If you like LOTS of articles on who the coolest extreme sports stars are, how they got their abs, and what gear they're wearing, subscribe NOW. The magazine looks amazing, the photography is top notch and they still manage to come up with a thorny article on the environment periodically. But for my money, it just feels like the editorial staff has been plucked from New York image mags that do one thing really well - SELL. I read National Geographic Adventure, and unlike Outside, I USE IT for information because it has CONTENT.

5-0 out of 5 stars Informative Mag for the Adventurous
I've been a subscriber to Outside magazine for several years, and it seems to go through its ups and downs in terms of the strength of its editorial content, especially regarding the political side of environmentalism. It is still easily the most informative magazine out there for lovers of the outdoors, but just note that the focus is on active, not armchair, appreciation of nature. Beyond the occasionally great and always heavily knowledgeable product reviews, the key strength of this magazine is the well-written and strongly researched articles on outdoor issues of concern, not just in America but around the world. An outstanding recent example, among many, concerns the economics of environmentalism in the conservative Western U.S. This is the type of strong conservationist reporting that can usually only be found otherwise in books. Other more whimsical articles are just fun to read for those with off-kilter interests, such as recent pieces on urban rock climbing or sauna fanatics in Finland.

Many other articles could be classified more as travel/tourism than adventure, but the accompanying photography is always top-notch, and the editors have a knack for finding out-of-the-way hidden treasures around the world that are ripe for discovery by the adventurous. (But on the other hand, the magazine could be faulted for contributing to the recent trend of hyping previously unknown outdoor paradises that have since become crowded, such as Molly Sods Wilderness in West Virginia.)Personally, I would like to see a little less focus on expensive vacations that extreme sports fanatics can take in hard-to-reach nations, and more on what folks with more realistic means (and amounts of free time) can do in humble parks and forests near home. But despite its habit of losing its focus at times, I will continue to be a fan of Outside for years to come, and might just travel to some of those hyped exotic adventure locations. [~doomsdayer520~]

4-0 out of 5 stars It serves its purpose!
For the guy that loves the outdoors and all the wonders that it provides, "Outside" is the magazine for him.Filled with straightforward info on travel, workout and health tips, and those little gadgets that make outdoor activities easier to tackle, this publication hits the nail on the head.

I would've never discovered it if it hadn't been offered as a one of the perks for renewing my subscription with a magazine readers' service, and for that, I am grateful. ... Read more

If you want updates on last week's games -- read SI or USA Today. If you want slick writing and glossy photos, read SI. It is the thinking person's baseball magazine, filled with bios of legends, new slants on stats and trends and interviews with today's stars.

5-0 out of 5 stars A GREAT ASSET FOR BASEBALL FANS !

I enjoy a lot reading my BD magazine and you'll do !

5-0 out of 5 stars The Perfect Gift For The Baseball Fan
If you have a friend, relative or other love who just adores baseball and wants to keep up with what's happening in the leagues, here is a great digest sized magazine to get. It's packed to the gills with nothing but pure baseball news and stats. What I like about baseball digest is that it often lists oddball stats, things like "batters who hit over 400 homeruns but also had a high percentage rate of strikeouts", and it keeps up with the more common stats like "All Time Hit's Leaders", "All ERA Leaders", etc. In other words, its a magazine that the majority of baseball fans will enjoy reading. I use to have a subscription and I may just take Amazon up on this offer. I love Baseball and I love this magazine. I use it to help me make decisions on who to invest in when it comes to baseball cards, and it has paid off tremendously!!! So not only can you enjoy keeping up with what's happening in America's Favorite Pastime, but you can find out which pitcher is averaging those 150 strikeouts a year, or who is averaging those 35 homers a year, and if you or someone you know collects baseball cards, you'll know who to buy ahead of time. Now if you do collect cards, please allow me to recommend Beckett Baseball Card Monthly, which, by the way, Amazon.com also has a cool subscription deal on. ... Read more

    Editorial Review

Like the industry leader in sports television that created it, ESPN the Magazine is big, bold, and brash, using its oversize format to show off striking full-page images and splashy sidebars. It's not all flash, though: the magazine also gets contributions from familiar on-air talent such as Dan Patrick, Chris Berman, Stuart Scott, Peter Gammons, and John Clayton as well as the athletes themselves. The biweekly format doesn't allow for the minutiae that The Sporting News handles, so you'll get broader features--playoff previews, personality profiles, photo spreads--with an emphasis on basketball, football, baseball, hockey, and some extreme sports, though off-season coverage tends to be limited to a page or two.--David Horiuchi ... 2-0 out of 5 stars ESPN: Stick with the Network, Ditch the Magazine
Sports publications seem like a dime a dozen, and in the case of ESPN magazine, this fact is true almost in the literal sense. This magazine is one of the least expensive on the market and this fact alone might make it seem tempting to purchase.

Before you act too quickly, however, you should know that ESPN magazine is not one of the better sports publications available. For starters, the magazine's dimensions are a little too large, making it seem more like a newspaper than a magazine. Second, the paper quality is poor. It is similar to a newspaper, but maybe one step above, which isn't saying much. The binding of this magazine is bad, too, with three staples holding each issue together.

These physical characteristics are annoying, but what's even worse with ESPN magazine is the articles themselves. There is little cohesiveness among the different sections of this magazine and the articles themselves are usually simplistic in nature and don't really offer any form of intellectual discussion. They point out a few facts about a popular sports personality, make a casual mention about his/her family and goals, along with a few other bits of fluff, and then end right there. There is nothing stimulating at all to the majority of the articles.

ESPN is a good network, and I watch its programming with a good degree of loyalty. But the people at ESPN really need to make some improvements to this magazine. It's the type of magazine that you toss aside after skimming through a few pages. There just isn't enough here to keep one's interest for very long.
