    Editorial Review

What does family fun mean to you? Crafts? Recipes? Party ideas? Travel tips? FamilyFun magazine dishes up these and more boredom-defying activities in over 180 splashy, colorful pages. Geared toward parents with young children, this energetic magazine promises to enrich the lives of families. Offering a "we've been there, we know" sort of comfort to parents, folksyfirst-person articles let parents know they're not alone. A sense of community is expanded further in the "My Great Idea" section--culled from readers' letters--that suggests kid-tested ideas for everything from summer games to rainy-day projects. Homeschoolers will find plenty to ponder as well--a winter issue, for example, describes how a snowflake takes shape, then suggests a paper snowflake-making project. Reviews of digital games, books, videos, and DVDs, written by industry experts, help parents feel up to the minute. FamilyFun is positively inspirational to parents who want to shake up the routine and keep the magic in a family. --Karin Snelson ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The most for your money in a family magazine!
I have been a subscriber to Family Fun for 4+ years and I have always enjoyed the magazine.I don't remember ever being disappointed in an issue.

I usually will read a magazine once just for entertainment value and then go back later and sort out the articles & ideas I want to keep on file for future reference. In most magazines this equates to a few pages to hang on to at the most. With Family Fun I always end up with a huge stack of ideas that I want to hang on to.What is even better is that these are tips and bits of information that I actually use and apply in our everyday lives.Practical, useful and fun are all words I would use to describe this publication.

    My favorite features include:
"My great idea" - submitted by readers
"Family Almanac" - seasonal activities and resources
and the travel ideas. We have discovered many great places that our on our list to visit someday and we have even been able to add some wonderful and educational fun to trips we have already had planned.

Some reviews have complained about the magazine being owned by Disney.I'm not sure why that is such a problem, but I do realize some people don't like Disney. The truth is that some major corporation owns just about everything major magazine out there anyway. At least the Disney company has helped Family Fun gain a bigger audience and provided a fantastic web site as a resource companion to the magazine.I don't find that Disney is overly promoted (a rarity in the world of Disney I know!) in this magazine. There are plenty of reviews and references to very non-Disney products such as the Harry Potter series, Shrek movies, and hundreds of travel ideas that have nothing to do with anything related to a Disney enterprise.

This magazine has definitely earned the 5 star rating.

5-0 out of 5 stars For parents, teachers or anyone who works with children!
I give Family Fun magazine 10 Stars!!! I fell in love with this magazine at least 10 years ago, way before it was owned by Disney.

Every month there are terrific art projects, children's cooking with pictures and each step is broken down that even a pre-teen wouldn't be insulted to cook from. There are terrific holiday ideas, different, but fairly easy Halloween costumes to make, indoor fun & games, ideas from other readers, even some articles for the adults, great family places to visit, reviews on books, music, movies and games geared for Children!

If you've missed seeing this magazine and fall in love with it, Family Fun has books that have sorta the best of the best like FamilyFun Cookbooks, Parties, Birthday Cakes (their cakes rock), Boredom Busters to name a few!

Perfect gift for your child's Kindergarten, 1st, 2nd or 3rd grade teachers, for any family with children or anyone who works with and loves children!

5-0 out of 5 stars Not Only for Those With Kids!
I was introduced to this magazine by a family friend who does have kids. However, I do not have any children and I love it!It gives me great recepie, craft and home ideas.I can use them in my own home or for my students or my Brownie Troop! ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars horrible
this book only has about 20 crafts and almost all oif them use thread or pipe cleaners. They should have all of the supplies in the book but they make you go to the store and buy it.The crafts arenot interesting and very boring.I suggest you don't buy this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Family Fun is Great
I have bought Family Fun magazine for years just for their craft section. They have great crafts for all ages, many made of inexpensive and easily available materials. I have not only used the crafts with my grandkids but also use them with my Sunday School class, with an age range of 4-13 years old. Many of their crafts make easy and attractive gifts for children to give at Christmas, etc., and they have a collection of things to make for school parties.I highly recommend this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great fun for beginners and more advanced
I work at a shelter for domestic violence victims including children. Many of these children have never had the opportunity to do crafts with a parent figure or go to school.Every time (and I mean every time), there was a craft class scheduled and we used something from this book in conjuction with a school lesson, the kids had a great time and learned something. They had, for the first time, something to give to their mothers for Christmas or Mother's Day.

The book is very easy to follow and I love the way it is divided up.If children who are learning challenged can do this, anyone can. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A very well thought out book
This book is amazing. It's beautifully designed and it is extremely well organized. I can instantly find the kind of activity that I am looking for (backyard activity, craft to do at the kitchen table, etc.) It's also easy to zero in on age-appropriate ideas, too. I have purchased a lot of activity books over the years, but this is definitely one of the very best.

5-0 out of 5 stars The BEST Family/Kids activity book ever!
This book is worth its weight in gold! There are activities, games, ideas, etc. suitable for any occasion. I have a son and a daughter, am a boy scout and a girl scout leader, entertain numerous neighborhood children and bring crafts into my children's classrooms often.A great deal of the activities I do comes from this book alone. I have a full time career also, so I don't always have a lot of time to plan and this book makes it possible.Even if I don't follow an idea exactly, I receive inspiration for other activities/crafts and always find a use for any type of container, paper roll, rocks, pinecones, etc.So if you want a book that not only has great craft ideas but also ideas for groups, games, things to keep your kids entertained while they're waiting for dinner; then this is your book! Have fun and enjoy!

5-0 out of 5 stars I love this book!
I bought this book, as well as the FamilyFun Craft book.It is a great book with great ideas for a wide range of ages. There are so many good ideas, its hard to know which to do first!I also liked that it is spiral-bound, it makes it easier to look at the projects. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Halloween fun for the family
There are a number of Halloween books out on the market for decorating, baking and costume making, but this is one of the few that actually hassomething new in it!

The crafts are clever, but actually look doable wtih things you might already have on hand. The costumes ideas are fun and innovative, the food ideas are also really cute, but not overly-complicated.While some classic ideas never die, this book puts a nice twist on things like "body parts" games.

Of course, the ideas come from the monthly magazine that Disney produces, Family Fun, and if you get the magazine, you'll have already seen alot of these things in print or on their website. Still, the book is nicely layed-out, easy to flip through and a good resource of party and costume ideas for both kids and their grown-ups.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very Pleased
This book is an awesome resource for make-at-home costumes and decorations. The ideas are so cute, easy to follow, and where else can you find a recipe for slime?

2-0 out of 5 stars SADLY DISAPPOINTED

4-0 out of 5 stars Great ideas for the younger set
This is a great party book for folks with kids 10 and under. There are some games that can be adapted for older kids as well, but the crafts and themes would not work for most kids over the age of 11. Parent participation is a big part of making these partys work, so be plan your event accordingly. There are ideas here for block partys, olympics, and all kinds of holiday events.

5-0 out of 5 stars Bring back the backyard parties!
I love this book.I borrowed this book from a friend and did not want to give it back--so I had to buy my own.I used the barnyard bash and everyone there thought I was so creative. I am very limited in time, being a working mom, and I pulled this party off the night before.Great book, creative ideas, highly motivational pictures.Great book altogether--backyard parties are now new and different!!

4-0 out of 5 stars great ideas for creative kids parties
This book is great. There are lots of fun theme party ideas
for kids of all ages. There is a nice selection of recipes from
"junk food " to healthier selections that are still appealing to kids. I hosted the tea party for my 3 year old,s birthday .It went smoothly and was loads of fun! ... Read more

    Editorial Review

This bright, colorful cookie book is as much fun to look at as it is to bake from. Glossy photos of Sweet Sugar Plums, Candy Cane Twists, and many other sugary delights will make your taste buds tingle. These recipes are ideal for kids and parents to make together--and many call for icing on top. This messy but creative task is bound to be the best part of the whole cookie process (aside from eating them, of course!). Since Christmas is the main focus of the book, there are several seasonal novelties to create. A cookie advent calendar is sure to make December extra exciting, and a holiday garland will be gobbled up in no time. Every recipe could quite happily be given as a holiday present, so the authors offer terrific advice for wrapping and mailing these fragile gifts. Finally, don't forget to leave some cookies out for Santa--but not too many! --Naomi Gesinger ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A Book with Cookie Recipes and Great Ideas for Kids!!!
I bought this book November 1998 when my youngest daughter at the time was in the 4th grade and had a school project to do. So I took her to the book store looking through children's books for ideas and a project she could do. With all the books of ideas we found this is the book we chose and it caught my eye because it was up front of the store with all the Christmas displays and because the book had the words "Family & Kids" on it.As soon as we saw the "Holiday Garland" on page 22, that was what she wanted to do.

I bought the book, we made the "Best-ever Sugar Cookies on page 7 (which was very easy) to make the "Holiday Garland". We made the words "Noel", "Merry Christmas" and "Feliz Navidad" by following the directions and used their suggested ideas. My daughter presented her project to the class, she received a good grade on it and the children enjoyed eating the cookies.

In the past we also did the "Tasty Gift Ideas" on page 50, which everyone thought was cute and made the "Peanut Butter Sealed with a Kiss" cookies, which was good and fun to do. Just recently my niece borrowed my book for her christmas cookies that she's been making for years every Christmas. I would recommend this book to anyone, especially with kids, the cookie recipes are good, the creative gift giving ideas are good, along with the creative ideas to entertain kids with cookies are fun and not only Christmas.

3-0 out of 5 stars Not too impressed
I found that the cookies in this book that are actually fun and creative, are by far outnumbered by the usual, standard recipes that can be found in any cookie book.
I expected more inspiration from this book!

5-0 out of 5 stars A good cookie book

5-0 out of 5 stars Cool Cakes & cupcakes foryour child's birthday or party!
Family Fun Magazine is awesome and here is sorta the best of the best of their ideas for the most creative and cool looking cakes that will make the supermarket pre-bought cakes look blah! Don't get me wrong, in a pinch or if you don't have the time, they are OK. These cakes are not that hard to make and will give your children the "wow, that's cool" and other parents and adults - "Who made this? Wow you made it, I gotta have the receipe for my.....!"

What is also nice is that some of the cakes have matching themed cupcakes, there are also ideas from other parents, and ideas for what you can also do themed wise for your party. Each cake has a very nice color photo, how you need to cut the cakes to make a certain shape, easy instructions.

There are cakes & cupcakes for both girls & boys from pre-school age to teen years. For boys there is a Dump Truck, a Bowlingpin & ball, Volcano, and Pirate Ship cake. For girls - Pink Pony head, Garden cake with flower cupcakes, and for teens and adults the hawaiian Beach Cake, Pizza, Burger & Hot dog cake & cupcakes just to name a few. My God-daughter had her friends over for the night and they made the Sleepover cake. It was a huge hit, the girls had lots of fun making it, took lots of photos with the cake and enjoyed every bite!

You just can't go wrong with this or any other book by FamilyFun book or for monthly children's ideas subscribe to FamilyFun's monthly magazine! You'll love it and your children will also enjoy it!

5-0 out of 5 stars Fabulous..and a must have cookbook
This book is terrific. It has wonderful cakes to make for
children's parties. I already had several basic cake
decorating books but this one had ideas that I had never seen before and which were easy but didn't look it. I made the under the sea cake for my daughters 6th birthday and it was a huge hit. It is my number one go to book when I am about to make a cake for a child's party. A definite must have for every family with children. ... Read more

My two year old loves this book. We've already had many special afternoons together baking homemade scones. She is so proud when company arrives and she can serve them something she helped make! The recipes in this book are wonderful, we all love the turkey meatball subs and the pb &j muffins!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Cooking With Kids!
Originally I picked up this cookbook to cook with my young sons, but quickly realized that there were wonderful grown-up recipes available in this book too.Hardcover, with a binding that lies flat on the counter, this book offers colorful graphics and pictures of the majority of the recipes presented. It is arranged in the following categories:Getting Ready, Breakfast:Rise & Shine, Lunch Specials, After-School Snacks, Soup's On, Breads we Love, Dinner's Ready, Side Dishes & Salads, Can I have Dessert, and Home for the Holidays.

Some of my family's favorite dishes include:Banana Split Waffles, PB & J Surprise Muffins, Strawberry Butter, Hummus, Falafel Flying Saucers, Nuke-able Nachos, Sneak-It-to-Em Broccoli Soup, Potato Chip Chicken Fingers, Baked Sweet Potatoes with Orange Sauce, Rock Candy, Leaning Tower of Oreos, Blueberry Fool, and Red, White, & Blueberry Freeze Pops. Also nicely included are some recipes for Play Doughs, with ideas on how to even make your own scented dough!

This was an excellent addition to my cookbook collection and my family has fun selecting and trying new recipes out of this extensive cookbook. If you want to teach your kids to cook, or want to find recipes sure to please even the finicky eater, then you should try this cookbook.Enjoy!

4-0 out of 5 stars A great gift for a family new to the area!
I've lived in the Chicago area for 20 years, and there were a few things in here that I didn't know about, such as the American Girls Shop/ play in Chicago. But by and large, most of the Chicago area stuff I knew about. Where it really comes in handy is that many of the areas featured are within a few hours drive. Great if you're going to visit family and need something for the kids. We found all kinds of neat stuff about one of our favorite vacation spots in Door County, Wisconsin that we otherwise would have missed. One area that could stand to be improved - they have Chicago, then Northwestern Illinois (Galena etc). What about the 'burbs? There's a few little things here and there, but otherwise the whole Chicagoland area outside of the city limits is missed. I would also like to see more on restaurants. Chicago has a TON of restaurants, including the upscale but very cool Chicago Firehouse (actually built into a firehouse, complete with pole - saw Mayor Daley there!)and there are only 7 mentioned. All in all though, a good buy, and as I said, would make a great gift for a family with kids new to the area. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Nothing but great from Family Fun!
I loved the book (we got the southeast one). It covers all of the southeast, not just FL and the big mouse! We live in GA so this book is awesome for us as we are central to all of the states it covers. If you are only buying one book, this should be it!! It rates must do's, costs, ages and also includes hotels and local eateries which most travel guides don't. I was very impressed. The above reviewer is reviewing the CA book so don't ket her review persuade you not to buy. You will not be disapointed!

This book needs some help. I am a big Family Fun Fan, and take the mag. and have all their books and was so excited to find that they had finally put a travel book together.
I loved the begining part about ways to travel with kids, all their tips and side notes. I liked that I could find kid friendly hotels and resturaunts.
But I was so dissapointed that alot of the states that I would be traveling in the book only talked about a few areas in that state. California should of had been one book and talked about northern and southern Calif., not just a few citties.
Family Fun has always had out of the way and unusal places to travel in their mag. why didn't they do this for their travel book.
If you are looking to see places all over the southwest in this book, you might be dissapointed like me. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Great book!
I bought this book because are planning a trip to Cape Cod.It was very informative and answered all of my questions.I highly recommend it if you have children because it offered hints and tips about traveling with children, price ranges for each activity and things you should not miss while in each vacation spot. The only reason I gave it 4 stars instead of 5 is the format.Sometimes a "hint" or description of a place would start in the middle of a page that was describing something else.It was a bit confusing at first.Otherwise it was well written and informative.I feel prepared to leave for Cape Cod (or any New England spot) today!! ...
