Editorial Review

This warm romantic comedy by newcomer Maria Maggenti is a gay coming-of-age story framed by Walt Whitman's Leaves of Grass. Randy (Laurel Hillman) is a stoner, lesbian teenager who happens to be failing math and dating a married woman. One day, fellow student Evie (Nicole Parker) drives up to Randy's gas station in a Range Rover and flips her world upside down. Evie is privileged and popular. Randy is poor, impulsive, and according to the other students, a freak. Opposites attract when the two girls kick off their friendship in detention. The flirtation blossoms after Evie introduces tomboyish Randy to the joys of Whitman and opera. Randy returns the favor by acquainting the sheltered Evie with the problems and delights of mature, taboo love. There is a beautiful scene where the two consummate their courtship on Evie's birthday while Mom is out of town. The true test of their relationship occurs during the hilarious climax when angry families and friends chase the troubled girls into hiding. --Margaret Griffis ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Title better than the movie
I've watched a lot of lesbian films and this one just didn't cut it for me. The acting seemed very strained. The girls played highschoolers, but you couldn't believe that.

The whole movie just seemed off to me.

If you are into lesbian flicks, I recommend watching this movie so you can form your own opinion.

"The Incredibly True Adventures of Two Girls in Love" is like coffee, you either love it or hate it.

2-0 out of 5 stars Eh!
Not the best lesbian film I have ever seen, it was a little too unrealistic for me.

5-0 out of 5 stars Awesome!
I didn't buy this book looking for erotic content, so that may be why I appreciated it more than others.

I bought it for insight into lesbians (past and present) and their shared experiences. Now, while I can see why some would mistake this for erotica, I would suggest that if you're looking for Erotica, you read On Our Backs: The Best Erotic Fiction (Volumes 1 and 2) or one of the many other Lesbian Erotica books out there.

I read Early Embrace's in a matter of I think two days. I could not put it down, and when I did, it was to laugh with pleasure or dry tears of reflection.

As soon as I finished, I went online to instant message my ex girlfriend/best friend and told her to buy the book.

I truly feel that this book should be required reading for all "babydykes". I felt such a surge of connection and feeling while reading this book, it was just awesome.

If I could give this book 10 stars, I would. It was, in my opinion, that good.

I can't wait to get volumes 2 & 3

4-0 out of 5 stars discovery
I bought this book because I thought I might be a lesbian and was desperate to explore material on the issue. This book was just what I needed! Not only did it help me confirm my belief that I was a lesbian, it also gave me an idea of what to expect, sexually. My reactions to this book helped me learn about myself. I would certainly recommend it for any questioning women, especially young ones.

2-0 out of 5 stars Absolutly Horrible!
There was definitely nothing erotic about this book. If anything it took the magic away from how amazing this experience can really be. It did have some eliment of sentiment but other than that it bored me, and I found it hard to get threw many of the stories, and eventually gave up. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A Story About Human Strength and Courage
This book is absolutely hilarious and witty! I love the main character, Molly Brown. Even though it's classified as a gay and lesbian book it doesn't focus on that, which is what I most admire about this book. It focuses more, to me, on Molly's ability and strength to do what she has to do, regardless of her financial situation and what other people think. This book is a story about having the strength, will, and courage; to do what you wish and be who you want to be, all of which Molly has little bproblem obtaining and keeping.

5-0 out of 5 stars Growing up is never easy.....
I first read this book in the mid '80s at UMCP in an American Studies class. I remember that I commented in class that the book was unbelievable because the main character seemed to meet lesbians every place that she went. Surely there weren't that many gay women in the world! So, lesson one for me was that I had been living a (very) sheltered existence.

The other lesson turned out to be that we all have our own "coming of age" story.Almost no one gets to adulthood without bumps and bruises. We are driven to explore who and why we are.Our evolution is tumultuous and inexorable.Growing up is filled with joy and pain despite orientation - or any of the other descriptive details of life. Brown makes this point beautifully in this novel.

This novel is instructive and enthralling.HIGHLY recommended!

4-0 out of 5 stars Molly Bolt -- a hero for the ages
I'm surprised it took me as long as it did to get to this book. When I was home over the holidays I went through my closet of books and found this novel, which I'd bought years ago. I started reading it and within an hour, I was completely hooked. Molly is so independent and smart, and Brown's writing keeps the story light even during some of the darker moments.

I would love to see whatever became of Molly (whom I suspect was at least partly informed by Brown's own life), but until a sequel appears, I am glad to have known Molly Bolt for the brief time we had together. ... Read more

Editorial Review

HBO caused a stir when it aired If These Walls Could Talk, a portrait of three women from three generations (all who occupied the same house at various times) who had unwanted pregnancies. HBO utilizes the same gimmick in the sequel, this time telling the story of women who love women.

The three stories of If These Walls Could Talk 2 are uneven. Far and away the most powerful and moving story is the first, taking place in 1961, starring Vanessa Redgrave as a woman "widowed" when her partner of 50 years suddenly dies. Redgrave is phenomenal, and her piece alone makes this sequel worth watching. The 1972 portion stars Michelle Williams, who finds dealing with the sexual politics of the gay community increasingly more complex when she falls in love with a boyish woman (played by Chloë Sevigny). The most modern piece, taking place in 2000, portrays a contemporary lesbian couple (Sharon Stone and Ellen DeGeneres) determined to have a baby. The light nature of the story detracts from the more serious issues of the earlier segments. Despite the mixed fare, HBO once again proves itself on the cutting edge of moviemaking, with this rather daring film that will both provoke and entertain. --Jenny Brown ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Touching, wonderful work
I first saw this movie on HBO and I absolutely fell in love with it. It's touching, funny, eye-opening.. Oh it's just Great! The acting is perfect, they make you feel all the emotions you're supposed to feel in different scenes. Its 3 short stories that all have a different meaning/struggle within lesbianism. The first one is about and elderly lesbian couple and how they had to hide all their life even after one of themwas gone. The remaining "wife" was left with no one else in the world. The second one takes place around the hippie era when feminist activists were at large. It shows how the butch type lesbians were looked down upon. The last one stars Ellen and Sharon Stone as a lesbian couple in the 20th century trying to have children and how difficult it can be. I hope I didnt give away too much but its just hard to explain the plots without giving it away! I really do recommend this to everyone. I say everyone not just gay people because I think its something that even straight people need to be aware of. It just takes you through different times in the 1900's and some pretty rough situations for the lesbians in those certain days. It's just honest. And wonderful. A must have for your lesbian collection!

4-0 out of 5 stars First!

Relax ... It's Just Sex
Director: P.J. Castellaneta
Average Customer Review: 4.5 out of 5 stars
DVD (25 January, 2000)
list price: $19.98

Editorial Review

The title suggests some God-awful, trying-too-hard sex farce, but Relax... It's Just Sex! is a surprisingly layered comedy that takes some serious and compelling emotional turns. Jennifer Tilly (Bound, Bullets over Broadway) plays Tara, a straight woman who's something of a den mother to a circle of friends, most of whom are gay or lesbian. While she tries to get pregnant with her new boyfriend, her friend Vincey (Mitchell Anderson) finally meets a guy he likes, an artist named Buzz (T.C. Carson), only to bring him to a dinner party where Buzz hooks up with Javi (Eddie Garcia), who has recently discovered that he's HIV positive. Meanwhile, Sarina (Cynda Williams from One False Move) has just learned that her lover, Megan, has slept with a man and runs into the arms of Robin (Lori Petty, Tank Girl, A League of Their Own). The movie takes story lines that could have been soap-opera clichés and rescues them with clever but realistic dialogue and strong, surprising performances. Over the course of the film the characters grow increasingly genuine, giving some of the twists in their lives an unexpected emotional impact. Relax... It's Just Sex! didn't get much of a release in theaters, perhaps because it's a sympathetic, realistic portrayal of gay men and lesbians, including some graphic sex. The transfer from film to video has marred the cinematography, giving the film a somewhat fuzzy image, but don't let that put you off from this refreshing, funny, and moving film. --Bret Fetzer ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Awsome gem
This is one of my favorite movies ever. It's hillaroius with lots of heart. It's one of those films where you acually laugh and cry during it. All of the actors ( Jennifer Tilly, Mitchel Anderson, Lori Petty, "T.C", Cynda Williams, and Serena Scott Thomas in particualar) turn in great performances. The movie is about a group of friends ( who just happen to mostly be gay and lesbian) try to deal with life, death, and hard ships. I f you want more indepth descrption of it go to the other dvd edition's reviews. But I deffinetly recomend you buy this edition. Other then a great movie there is a witty, funny commentary track by Lori Petty, Jennifer Tilly and the producer Steven Wolf. I was laughing out loud with some stories and comments they had about the making of the film and there experiences in sundance. Plus I believe the two of them were the standouts of the cast so it was even more enjoyable. There are also some deleted scenes and some bloopers ( very scarce) but better then nothing. Overall it's a very good dvd and I'd buy it anyway just for the greatness of the movie. For movie with a 250,000 budget ( seriously) it deserves top honorr. Good for everyone.

5-0 out of 5 stars MADE IN AMERICA
What a pleasant surprise!Honestly, I have had the feeling for many years that a move like "Relax, It's just Sex" would never be made here in America. This movie is about a group of very intriguing good friends comprising of both gay and straight characters where, for once being gay is NOT the problem. It is not a "coming out" or a "is he or is she gay?" film; everyone is very comfortable with his or her sexuality to the point that they are able to be very supportive of each other no matter what is going on in a particular person's life at any particular moment.

There are many very funny moments intermingled with "real life" serious situations, which are dealt with--including love, HIV infection, commitments, a miss-carriage, and a "gay bashing".The "gay bashing" for me, really hit home. For once, in this movie, the "victim" had opportunity to get immediate revenge and did so to the shock and horror of his friends who had problems dealing with his anger and his execution of revenge on one of the bashers.(In all honestly if given the opportunity to get revenge on a "gay bashing" punk, I think that I would take advantage of that opportunity as the character, in the film, did!)

All of the actors in the film are great with Jennifer Tilly giving, to me, an Oscar winning performance-she's hysterically funny at one moment and "heart breaking" the next moment.I just wish I had a group of friends as portrayed in this movie.

If you are into good films, buy this DVD

5-0 out of 5 stars Incredible Movie
I ran into this movie while channel-surfing on TV.The introduction drew me in -- I couldn't figure out what they were doing with the people on a rotating stage in black and white and the corny 60's sounding announcer -- then suddenly the storyline went full-throttle into what could be some modern-day relationships in America. The movie not only focussed on intimate relationships between lovers but the strong bond between friends.I laughed and cried, was shocked and amazed, and thoroughly immersed throughout the entire movie.I saw the movie a few more times on cable, then have rented it a few times to show other friends who have never heard of it.Everyone loves it so I'm going to add it to my DVD collection to save having to rent it again!I highly recommend it to anyone who has an open mind, who loves great dialogue, and who actually enjoys a good story in their movie. ...
