1-0 out of 5 stars Watch the advertisement
My 5 year old son brought a copy of this magazine home from his after school program and wanted to show me a really cool page the kids were looking at. It was a Sketchers ad with scantly clothed voluptuous women holding bull whips. It even had a vampires feeding off prey scene. This add would not be appropriate for my 12 year old. Buyer beware!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Magazine
I've only had 2 magazines come so far and I already love it.It has great articles, cool photos, and a whole lot of other stuff.I would recomend this magazine to anyone who is an NBA fan.

    Editorial Review

Like the industry leader in sports television that created it, ESPN the Magazine is big, bold, and brash, using its oversize format to show off striking full-page images and splashy sidebars. It's not all flash, though: the magazine also gets contributions from familiar on-air talent such as Dan Patrick, Chris Berman, Stuart Scott, Peter Gammons, and John Clayton as well as the athletes themselves. The biweekly format doesn't allow for the minutiae that The Sporting News handles, so you'll get broader features--playoff previews, personality profiles, photo spreads--with an emphasis on basketball, football, baseball, hockey, and some extreme sports, though off-season coverage tends to be limited to a page or two.--David Horiuchi ... 1-0 out of 5 stars Not Impressed

Just waiting for my subscription to run out on this thing.
Each week I glance through all it's ads and "flashy" pictures
looking for some substance, but really never find much. Most
of the time it gets tossed in the trash the same day I receive it.
As soon as my subscription runs out,I will never bother
with looking at it again. If you want a true Sports magazine
with real substance get "The Sporting News".I prefer this over
"Sports Illustrated" and "Espn the magazine".I'd rate them
    1.The Sporting News
    2.Sports Illustrated
    3.Espn the Magazine

2-0 out of 5 stars ESPN: Stick with the Network, Ditch the Magazine
Sports publications seem like a dime a dozen, and in the case of ESPN magazine, this fact is true almost in the literal sense. This magazine is one of the least expensive on the market and this fact alone might make it seem tempting to purchase.

Before you act too quickly, however, you should know that ESPN magazine is not one of the better sports publications available. For starters, the magazine's dimensions are a little too large, making it seem more like a newspaper than a magazine. Second, the paper quality is poor. It is similar to a newspaper, but maybe one step above, which isn't saying much. The binding of this magazine is bad, too, with three staples holding each issue together.

These physical characteristics are annoying, but what's even worse with ESPN magazine is the articles themselves. There is little cohesiveness among the different sections of this magazine and the articles themselves are usually simplistic in nature and don't really offer any form of intellectual discussion. They point out a few facts about a popular sports personality, make a casual mention about his/her family and goals, along with a few other bits of fluff, and then end right there. There is nothing stimulating at all to the majority of the articles.

ESPN is a good network, and I watch its programming with a good degree of loyalty. But the people at ESPN really need to make some improvements to this magazine. It's the type of magazine that you toss aside after skimming through a few pages. There just isn't enough here to keep one's interest for very long.

3-0 out of 5 stars Disappointed with this magazine
I subscribed to ESPN THE MAGAZINE for a year and did not renew.Subscription rates are low which makes the magazine attractive but I found a lack of substance. It is basically a couple of athlete interviews or profiles and then a lot of disjointed information thrown throughout the magazine.

It is flashy and colorful. Its not bad for the price but there are better. The writing is a little on the edgy side which doesnt appeal to me.It seems to be aimed at teens and young adults.I ended up not reading most issues I got or just glancing through them. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars REAL Baseball magazine
If you want updates on last week's games -- read SI or USA Today. If you want slick writing and glossy photos, read SI. If you want to immerse yourself in the culture and history of the game, get this. It is the thinking person's baseball magazine, filled with bios of legends, new slants on stats and trends and interviews with today's stars.

5-0 out of 5 stars A GREAT ASSET FOR BASEBALL FANS !
A great great asset for a real baseball fan. Very interesting reviews of the past, great games, players, statistics, interviewsand such as things you really love it. I got the subscription and I recommended a lot because they're a serious company behind this marvelous magazine.
I enjoy a lot reading my BD magazine and you'll do !
Let's read it and say PLAY BALL !

5-0 out of 5 stars The Perfect Gift For The Baseball Fan
If you have a friend, relative or other love who just adores baseball and wants to keep up with what's happening in the leagues, here is a great digest sized magazine to get. It's packed to the gills with nothing but pure baseball news and stats. What I like about baseball digest is that it often lists oddball stats, things like "batters who hit over 400 homeruns but also had a high percentage rate of strikeouts", and it keeps up with the more common stats like "All Time Hit's Leaders", "All ERA Leaders", etc. In other words, its a magazine that the majority of baseball fans will enjoy reading. I use to have a subscription and I may just take Amazon up on this offer. I love Baseball and I love this magazine. I use it to help me make decisions on who to invest in when it comes to baseball cards, and it has paid off tremendously!!! So not only can you enjoy keeping up with what's happening in America's Favorite Pastime, but you can find out which pitcher is averaging those 150 strikeouts a year, or who is averaging those 35 homers a year, and if you or someone you know collects baseball cards, you'll know who to buy ahead of time. Now if you do collect cards, please allow me to recommend Beckett Baseball Card Monthly, which, by the way, Amazon.com also has a cool subscription deal on. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Not What It Used To Be
I've been reading Runner's World for several years now but I am going to stop.Month after month I'll look at the cover and get excited about an "article" they say is included in the issue, only to locate the "article" and find it is no more than either a fluff piece of information that must be targeted toward someone who has never ran so much as a city block in their life, or it is a three sentence answer to a reader's question that was sent in.Do these actually count as in depth pieces that warrant advertisement on the cover?

Furthermore, every issue is the same. There will be an article on losing five lbs. by the holidays/summer/race season - whatever month the issue happens to come out. There will be a shoe review (blah!).There will be a "Fifty Ways To Stay Motivated" piece - which is always the same commonsensical tips. And there will be a "Special Woman's Section" - which, when it shows up every single month, makes me wonder just how "special" it could really be.

Once in a while there will be a good recipe, or a decent (but way too short) article on a runner. However, you could save alot of money by only purchasing one issue of this magazine because, except for the pictures and graphics, all the articles will be pretty much the same month after month.

3-0 out of 5 stars Only one issue's experience
I bought the issue because I was told there was an article about beginning runners training for their first half marathon. The article was mentioned on the cover. It turned out to be a fluff piece giving reasons why it was better to run a half marathon than a full one for your first long race.I didn't find a lot more depth.Motivational, some general ideas, but I didn't come away with a lot of technical information.

5-0 out of 5 stars Your Best Friend
Sometimes you need a friend to help you out the door and to motivate you to start your running program. This magazine did exactly that for me.Along with its thorough web-site, runnersworld.com, I started a running program that took me from running two minutes at a time to running a 5K (3miles) in twenty-two minutes in only fifteen weeks.Unlike many other magazines, this one does not over burden you with excessive advertisements and random space fillers. All articles are helpful and cover a broad spectrum of practical and entertaining subjects. The best magazine I have ever encountered, you won't be able to put it down! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Golf's Best Magazine Publication
Golfers share many things in common and one of these is an often fanatical love for the game. For these types, nothing can take the place of heading to the nearest golf course, but Golf Digest comes very close. This magazine contains over 200 pages each month, dedicated exclusively to the sport of golf.

The things that set Golf Digest apart from the competition are the numerous articles about learning and improving your game and the personal stories and interviews. Other golfing publications attempt to help you learn, but they often get too mechanical. Golf Digest shows you how to improve your game with tips from professionals, including some of the star- studded members of the golfing elite like Tiger Woods.

Besides all the tips and tricks, Golf Digest also shows the personal side of the sport with interviews and more intimate stories about the many colorful personalities in the game. This personal dimension adds greatly to the magazine's overall appeal, providing great reading material to complement the more instructional side of the magazine.

Golfing Digest may not be as great as a day spent on your favorite golf course, but it comes close. I consider it the best publication of its kind and I recommend it to anyone with an interest in the game.

5-0 out of 5 stars 5 stars from a subsrciber of over 20 years
Over the many years that I have subscribed to Golf Digest, I've come across extremely useful information from world class teachers and the top players that has improved my game. In addition to appreciating the superb teaching article, I always look forward to the new product editions. Equally informative and entertaining are the various feature article and interviews. Golf Digest is simply the best golf magazine!

2-0 out of 5 stars All around
Golf Digest is the quintessential all around golf magazine. They write about lessons, travel, equipment and golf news. They seem to be a little biased recently with the acquisition of many of today's top golf stars, by not writing anything negative about them or their sponsors, i.e. Tiger and Nike. They are usually right on with their reviews of places to play and I enjoy how they pick one location and focus on it.I.e. Cape Cod, the courses that you can play and other activities that are around the vicinity.I wish they would choose some more exotic locales such as South Africa, New Zealand, Australia and South America though. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Very good magazine, interesting.
This magazine has good articles about golf and on golf instruction. The pictures on golf instruction are always very clear and not hard to follow.I think there are too many ads at times which I sometimes get tired of reading...

I recommend the following books on golf instruction that I found to be highly beneficial.
The first one is "Zen Golf", which shows the mental side of the game and makes playing golf easier in this aspect.

The second book I recommend on the physical aspect of golf is "The Ultimate Golf Instruction Guide: Key Techniques for Becoming a Zero Handicap Golfer or Better." This book really has some amazing and unique stuff about the golf swing.I finallyscored below 80 because of this book.

Golf Magazine is definitely my favorite magazine on golf.I also love their issue every year on new golf equipment. This issue I find the best.It shows you how golfers with different handicaps perform with different clubs. It even shows clubhead speeds and measured driving distance of each person who is testing the clubs.I find this very interesting.

2-0 out of 5 stars Nice illustrations for lessons
I really enjoy how they illustrate and break down their lessons into different playing abilities.Even though they break down the lessons into breaking 80, 90, 100, straight hitter looking for power or power hitter looking for accuracy, they are all very helpful. No matter what your playing ability, I think any golfer can take away a little bit of advice from the playing lessons. Unfortunately, Golf Magazine seems to be a little weak on their travel side lately though; not really focusing on that perhaps due to the downturn in travel in recent months.I wish they would focus on that a little more like some other magazines such as T&L golf or The Golfer.

5-0 out of 5 stars The best of a big field
I've spent the last couple of months plowing through every golf magazine I could get my hands on, including Golf, Golf Illustrated, Golf Tips, and Stroke Savers to name a few.Golf Magazine, which has been around since 1959 and comes out monthly, is by far the best in terms of quality, content and presentation. While they all feature tips and lessons, Golf's photos are the most helpful to me, for instance showing stance, grip and frame-by-frame swing photos in separate boxes.I also find their paper quality and photos to be better, and their non-instructional articles to be more interesting.Add to that the fact that the magazine is published monthly, rather than a few times a year, and I believe it's the best deal for the money, especially as inexpensive as it is.

As an added bonus, many resorts and equipment companies offer special deals exclusively to Golf Magazine readers, which you can take advantage of via a special section on those offers each month. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars For the serious golfer
Golf tips magazine is one of the most aptly titled magazines available today. It is chock full of heavily-illustrated exercises and other tips for serious golfers to improve their games.

There are a number of golf magazines on the newstand today. Most of them rely on a lifestyle format relying more heavily on lifestyle-type stories about today's hot golfers and the courses they play. Most of them include a brief game tip or two but seem aimed at the casual duffer.

Golf Tips, on the other hand, features almost nothing but heavily illustrated tips on improving one's swing, eliminating mistakes and putting better. It also is heavily loaded with features on the latest equipment technology. Each issue also seems to feature an article on the technical aspects of a selected major golf course. The articles are written with terminology that serious golfers will understand but that may confuse the weekend player. Judging by the amount of advertising in its early issues, this magazine also appears to be financially healthy.

If a reader wants to read about the PGA Tour's superstars, this magazine is not for him/her. But if s/he plans to be one of those superstars, Golf Tips is a good match.

5-0 out of 5 stars Short and sweet

    1-0 out of 5 stars Over-rated
Where's the content in this magazine.ADs...ads...ads.They try and make themselves out to be a great golf travel magazine, but I have seen much better in other publications.I agree with the woman from England...Links loads up on these inserts.I like to read a magazine like The Golfer, where they travel all over the world and review spectacular courses from the Carribbean to New Zealand.

4-0 out of 5 stars Very Serious Golf Magazine but a bit high on the Snob-factor
The Good: Links is for players who take golf very seriously. It usually contains one or two excellent journalistic articles. They have an immense appreciation for golf course architecture. It contains articles on 'classic courses', 'modern classics' (which usually reads a bit like a sales pitch for a private course), as well as 'great courses' in the UK & the Republic of Ireland (which is why I subscribe). The photography is always first-rate, and it occassionally includes some of the most visually stunning photo's of the some of the greatest courses on the planet (e.g. Cypress Point).

The Bad: Links includes a small section on golf clothing and equipment, but it seems they usually water-down any critical comments, which makes me a bit suspicious that they're afraid to offend any potential advertisers, so what's the point? Also, Links doesn't contain any articles on the technical/mechanical aspects of the swing (e.g. how to hit the ball further and straighter); they leave that to Golf Digest & Golf Magazine.

The Ugly: Links magazine is clearly aimed at the high-end, upper crust, elitist, fat-cat end of the market i.e. it's very high in snob-appeal. It's absolutely overloaded with advertisements (as well as those incredibly annoying inserts) for very exclusive, ultra-private country club estates that offer courses designed by Jack, Tom, or Arnie and include equestrian/polo facilities, spa's, marinas for your yacht, etc., not to mention the luxury homes at > $2MM. If your preferred drink is light beer, your golf attire includes muscle shirts, or perhaps you have a hat that says 'old fart' on it, then this magazine is definitely NOT for you.

I've been a subscriber for > five years, and although I find the 'ugly' part a bit annoying, I simply ignore it and find that the good outweighs it. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Good News - But Lacks other information
Golf World is a very good source for your every day/weekly golf news, industry news, tournament news and player news. However, it lacks everything else. There aren't any articles or special features on golf travel, clubs and other lifestyle related items that are also essential to the avid golfer.I actually enjoy Golfweek a little more, as they occasionally write about places to play and have a great "club test" piece, where they take a slew of different amateur players, with different handicaps and review new clubs by having different scenarios.

5-0 out of 5 stars Your best source for the sport of golf
Okay, first things first: if you want a magazine that is going to show you how to 'Break 90 Consistently!' or 'Hit It Lke Tiger!!' etc...well, GolfWorld is *not* going to be your cup of tea.

But if you're like me and you want the inside scoop on what happened on the various tours (PGA, Champions, LPGA, Nationwide, European, Japanese, NCAA and much, much more) over the previous week, then GolfWorld *is exactly* what you're looking for. It's the bible.Period.

For example, there's a great section each week that tells you what the winners of the three major tours were carrying in their bags. Then they drill down one level further and examine one of the components in greater detail. For example, only GolfWorld told me that PGA winner Rich Beem uses graphite shafts on his irons. In fact, Beemer was one of only three (regular) tour golfers in 2002 that used them. The article when on to explain the bias against graphite irons at the pro level and Beem's reasoning against that bias.If you appreciate detail and nunace like that (and I do), then GolfWorld will fascinate you week in and week out.

GolfWorld also keeps you informed about the greater issues that consistently swirl about the game.No one has reported the R&A v. USGA v. Callaway (and others) COR battle better, and they've not shied away from commenting about the current Masters controversy either.

This week's edition (December 13, 2002) is a prime example of what makes GolfWorld such a great read.Q-School just concluded, and in most newspapers it got relegated to the agate type...even though this tournament - more than any other week of the year - can make or break men's careers (lives, maybe).By contrast, GolfWorld dedicates its *entire issue* - 52 pages! - to what it calls "golf's hardest week."Exactly what the event deserves.

This magazine is worth every penny. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Weeks and Weeks of Golf
I know many people who are confirmed addicts to the game of golf and one publication they like to read is Golfweek. This magazine is the only golf publication I know about that is issued with this level of frequency, making it an ideal choice for those who can't seem to get enough golf.

Since this magazine is published every week, some of the information contained within might seem a little bit boring to certain readers. There isn't always enough going on in the world of golf to fill a magazine from one week to the next. But the editors of Golfweek manage to find enough to complete each issue. They do so by stressing any news, minor or major, about golf and by including recent scores and worldwide rankings of golfing professionals and even of college golf teams.

Golfweek doesn't dedicate as much space as other golf magazines to the area of learning, and this could disappoint some readers who want to learn some new tips. Statistics, scores, and breaking news seem to be foremost in importance with this magazine. This is nice, but I would like to see a little more advice from the pros on how to reduce my handicap and improve my golfing game.

Golfweek is still a good publication for those who are fanatical about the game of golf. It doesn't offer many personal stories about the different personalities of golf and it doesn't offer many learning tips. But those who are addicted to golf will love it nonetheless. It brings the world of golf to your mailbox every week, with updates on scores, tournaments, and news.

5-0 out of 5 stars ALL the Tour News, College Golf & Club Level News - Weekly!
Why should you get this magazine? If you are lacking in news regarding ALL of the tours (literally): PGA, LPGA, Senior, European, Asian tours, Buy.com and the mini circuits - they cover every tour event every week.

If you want rankings of every player worldwide, the money list and the weekly top finishers of every professional golf event from the televised tour events to the Greater Podunk Open with a top prize of $1,500 dollars, it's listed here. This is the only place that covers the college golf season in great detail.

While it's technically not a trade magazine, they cover new equipment announcements in a trade magazine manner - cost, distribution and advertising plans.

If you combined "Fortune" with "The Sporting News" - that's basically GolfWeek. They basically approach it as "the business of golf."

Which might sound like faint praise but it is actually a high compliment - they approach everything with a objective distance even when they are doing feature stories on golfers. They are sometimes harsh but always honest & fair. While some golf writers dance around an issue of a Sunday collapse, they are honest and forthright enough to address the issue without getting personal or vindictive. This is not the magazine on trying to knock 2 strokes off your game, that's what the other magazines are for.

Just like "Fortune" for golf, it's on the business of golf: the people, the tours, the equipment and what's going on. It is a lot of info, news, analyses and statistics.
