I rated it one star because one can't rate something ZERO stars. If you think you liked the stories in this ... thing, track down the original versions -- I'm sure you'll like them more!(I find it interesting that the editors of this volume didn't include info on exactly what magazine and issue each story came from -- probably didn't WANT people going back and making comparisons...)
Wow, I have not encountered a more expertly assembled collection of erotic bear tales elsewhere. At the end of it all, you the reader will surely want to hug and squeeze the editors and authors for their stellar efforts. There is not a single stiff dud here at all. From the opening tale to the last, it seems they have sequenced these engaging stories carefully to achieve a culmulative pseudo-orgasmic effect on the reader as he progresses through the series. There is an almost tangible sense of onward thrust and boiling urgency which really compels the reader to keep his nose firmly between the stitched reams of this glorious book; even forgetting all about air as he heads for the end. Also, singularly running from the top through to the bottom tale is a magnificently thick, rich vein of naughty humor. The authors all seem to share a similar evil sense of humor, and they have made it very evident in their own stories. That probably accounts for why I'd reckoned this is the best assemblage of bear erotica. This shared sense of humor really acts as a unifying force. Those scenes of mud-baths, sofa-cleanings, Olympian wrestling, Santa's presents etc., they truly sparkle with a deliciously evil humor. Lastly, the accompanying G-rated pics skilfully inserted at various stoppage points in the book add to the overall sensual atmosphere, and with the exception of one or two woeful Hairy Mary choices, almost all of the subjects fit the mould of the bear-prototype. This is evidence that the editors have actually done research in their field of specialization. This really is a well put together tome of erotic thrillers - well suited to be taken in neat and straight, or as a companion tabletop diversion whilst you are going through your stock portfolios. Bravo! Bring on the sequel please! ... Read more Isbn: 189083436X |

Very stimulating reading, though I did not find the cover model very titillating. Of course, as the person who whines about classical CDs with skinny hairless men on the cover to trick us gays into buying them, I may want to have my panda-shaped cake and eat it tooâ¦

The Bear Book : Readings in the History and Evolution of a Gay Male Subculture by Average Customer Review: Paperback (01 June, 1997) list price: $24.95 -- our price: $24.95 (price subject to change: see help) US | Canada | United Kingdom | Germany | France Editorial Review From Michelangelo's David to Calvin Klein's hunks in briefs, the cult of the beautiful male body has been at the heart of much of gay culture. But there is more to gay life than buffed pecs and rippled abs. Les Wright's The Bear Book is a surprising collection of sociological and literary essays about gay bears: hefty, bearded men who look for the same attributes in their partners. The gay bear phenomenon started more than a decade ago--in response to AIDS, some commentators note here--and has become a defining identity for many gay men. The Bear Book examines the range of bear culture--bear magazines, bear clubs, bear Web sites--and in doing so explores how gay male culture evolves in response to the needs of its members and to the broader culture. ... The portions on the history of bears are mostly San Francisco scene name-dropping, and there's no serious attempt to examine the origin of the bear "movement" by taking a look at its roots in the leather community or in Girth and Mirth. Instead, we're told that bears came about because HIV-positive San Francisco men looked at extra weight as a sign of health in the mid-to-late eighties. No proof, just assertions. Do yourself a favour and skip this book. You can spend your money better elsewhere.

Dirty Pictures : Tom of Finland, Masculinity, and Homosexuality by Average Customer Review: Hardcover (16 March, 2000) list price: $27.95 -- our price: $17.61 (price subject to change: see help) US | Canada | United Kingdom | Germany | France Editorial Review In a gay heaven, the choir robes would be designed by Gautier after drawings by Tom of Finland. Even on Earth, utopia must be approaching when the musclebound torsos and bulging baskets of Tom's manly men attract a full-length critical study. Art historian Micha Ramakers, who previously edited a monograph of Tom of Finland's drawings, argues persuasively for the influence of these hyper-masculine figures on gay culture since the mid-1950s, when the artist's renderings of fantasy men first began to appear in American beefcake magazines. Although the consistency of Tom of Finland's technique and themes over the four decades of his working life doesn't leave Ramakers much room to discuss the development of his subject's talents, he makes ample use of his few opportunities (like the introduction of more black figures in the mid-1980s, after the artist spent six months in the U.S.). More rewardingly, he uses the pornographer's work as a lens for examining the evolution of gay masculinity since the 1950s. --Regina Marler ... Read more Reviews (3)

Tom of Finland : His Life and Times (Stonewall Inn Editions) by Average Customer Review: Paperback (15 September, 1994) list price: $14.95 -- our price: $10.17 (price subject to change: see help) US | Canada | United Kingdom | Germany | France Editorial Review Perhaps no one has had a greater influence on gay male fashion than illustrator-cartoonist Tom of Finland. In this volume his unusual and triumphant life story is told in words and pictures. The pictures, of course, steal the show, as Tom's bubble-bottomed macho men fight, love, and punish each other. There's still much to be said about Tom's impact on American and European gay culture, but this book provides a good starting point not only for Tom's fans who want to learn about the man behind the leather-clad images, but also for the uninitiated who've always wondered where the leather-cap-and-chaps look origintated. Sadly, with Tom's death the flow of testosterone-packed pictures has stopped, but volumes like this show that there is still life in his legend. ... Read more Reviews (2)

The Master's Manual: A Handbook of Erotic Dominance by Average Customer Review: Paperback (01 August, 1994) list price: $15.95 -- our price: $13.56 (price subject to change: see help) US | Canada | United Kingdom | Germany | France Editorial Review This is an essential read for anyone wanting to understand how S/M can be primal, when leather can be spiritual, why someone could be proud of being a sadist, or how to find joy and wholeness in our dark sides. Rinella notes that "attitude makes the difference between being a master and a top," and The Master's Manual is unequaled in its discussion of the attitude of power and the soul of a master. This is the second book any novice dominant or submissive should read. While the basic how-to of Sensuous Magic or Screw the Roses, Send Me the Thorns is essential, The Master's Manual builds on that knowledge with things such as "Rinella's Six Attributes Every Master Needs" (like self-confidence, trustworthiness, and acceptance of self), the strength and courage of submissives, the application of discipline, and suggestions on the training of submissives. It's a peerless resource for anyone who wants to be, or wants to understand, a master. While much of the wisdom in The Master's Manual is gleaned from the gay leather scene, Rinella's honest and nonjudgmental writing is appropriate for people of any orientation who seek to learn more about the empowerment and ecstasy that can be found in leathersex. Each of the 40 pieces was written to stand alone, and they cover topics from how to become a master, why someone would want to, fiction and nonfiction leather classics and classics-to-be, contracts and commitments, how to deal with a scene gone wrong, and more. Taken together, they combine to form a picture of a world where "we can live our fantasies and face our fears. The real self can emerge from behind the mask of culture." --Cheryl Trooskin ... The book is definately written from a gay male perspective. While his introduction acknowledges the lesbian, bi, and het participants in the scene, and there is the occasional reference in the text, for the most part he speaks in gay leathermen's terms. If you find "Screw the Roses" or "The Loving Dominant" too het for your liking, this book might be a more comfortable introduction to the scene (although i think those other two provide a more thorough grounding, and are better organised). There's nothing wrong with that--for the most part the practical advice is the same regardless of gender and orientation. But there are exceptions. For instance, he recommends using lubricants with Nonoxynol-9 (a spermicide which has killed the AIDS virus in lab experiments). This may or may not be good advice for men, i don't know, but it is definately bad advice for women. Most women are allergic to N-9, and the resulting irritation and swelling can make them MORE likely to contract an STD. In the end i can't bring myself to recommend this book. If you're looking for a good intro to the scene, there are better books out there. From my own experience, "Screw the Roses" wins hands down for both practical information and fun, and Warren's "The Loving Dominant" covers roughly the same ground as Rinella, in more depth and with better organisation. For those looking for an intro written specifically from a gay men's perspective i can't make a recommendation from my own experience, but the guys i know in the NLA often recommend Joseph Bean and Larry Townsend--and so does Rinella, for that matter. The bottom line is, Rinella's "The Master's Manual" just doesn't add anything new to the body of literature that already exists.
