4-0 out of 5 stars ice cube is the best on this album
ice cube is one of the best rappers in music. the best are 2pac, ll cool j and snoop dogg! cube's songs are very good and the peace disc-album is fantastic! dr.dre songs "keep theyr heads ringin'" and "let me ride" are one of the best rap songs of all time. the mc ren song is allright, and i like eazy-e, so all of his songs are great. listen to tha dogg pound album, it's a good one! "bow down" is a very cool song from westside connection. the cd should have remixes fron the n.w.a. songs and not from cube's, eazy's and snoop's songs. oh, and "doggystyle" is better than "the chronic"!

Editorial Review

A lone voice sneers "You are about to witness the strength of street knowledge," and with that warning the greatest-ever gangsta album begins. Then these Niggas with Attitude--wicked rhymes by Ice Cube, Easy E, and MC Ren; soulful production courtesy Dr. Dre; beats provided by DJ Yella--come barreling into your face, just daring you to ignore the streets of Compton (or any American city) even one day longer. From the anti-police brutality anthem "F__k Tha Police" to the angry, unflinching realism of "Gangsta Gangsta," to the pro-free speech "Express Yourself," this is slammin' and ruthless.--David Cantwell ... 5-0 out of 5 stars The one that started and ended it all....
This was the album. The one that started the "gangsta rap" genre that, depending on how you looked at it, revolutionized hip hop or killed it. That's why I love and loathe this release at the same time. When this hit big time back in the late 80's, everybody jumped on the gangsta bandwagon trying to cash in on NWA's success by "keepin' it real". Unfortunately, this meant old-school rappers who avoided the gangsta-gravy train(Eric B & Rakim, Big Daddy Kane, Boogie Down Productions, etc) all got eventually lost in the shuffle to the more flashy, media-hyped gangsta rappers. Too bad, cause those other rappers were waaaay better than the flood of NWA copycats. If you want the other release in the late 80's that changed the face of rap, go see the reviews for PE's It Takes A Nation of Millions...

Anyway, having said all that, I still enjoy this release. From the hard-core funky beats, the political/message-driven lyrics, and the old-school "multiple alternating mc's" rap style of delivery, this is a great cd to have in your rap collection. The new re-mastered version supposedly has 4 bonus tracks too so it's worth a purchase. Favorite tracks: Staight Outta Compton(the definitive song of its sub-genre), **** tha Police(absolutely brutal and angry), and Compton's N tha House(inadvertently amusing because the "f" word is used so many times!). Overall, a great rap album I've enjoyed listening to through the years, but hope others don't just make this their stopping point as the 80's had many other great rap artists that did so much for this maligned genre.

5-0 out of 5 stars The First Classic Gangsta Rap CD
Ok well, you might ask yourself, who is the NWA? They ain't just some fools from Compton, they compose of six of the most lethal rappers who ever touched a mic, and one of the most creative DJ's who is known to create chaos on the wheels of steel (Technics 1200 turntable). You got people like Dr Dre, Ice Cube, and Eazy-E providing lyrics that cross the line of explict by a mile. If that isn't enough you have MC Ren, The D.O.C. and Arabian Prince (Brother Rab) in the backseat also spitting madness on the album. The whole CD in general has its highs, and lows. Also it provides a variety of styles. "COMPTON'S N THE HOUSE (REMIX)" is Dre and MC Ren rapping live on stage with cutting by Yella. "STRAIGHT OUTTA COMPTON" is a classic gangsta rap track with really dope bass and beat production by Dr Dre. Eazy-E's "8-BALL (REMIX)" is a story about him and his beer which sounds very familar for its 1988 setting. If you want to hear the explict lyrics I was talking about listen to "GANGSTA GANGSTA" AND "F--- THA POLICE" with heavy influence from Ice Cube. My personal favorite is when the NWA combines some of its electro beats with hip-hop flavor when Arabian Prince and the rest of the NWA on the track "SOMETHING TO DANCE TO". Also upcoming star The D.O.C. who was famous for his song "IT'S FUNKY ENOUGH" which was released a year later, appears on "PARENTAL DISCRETION IS ADVISED". The ONLY "clean" tracks on the album are "SOMETHING TO DANCE TO", "QUIET ON THA SET", and "EXPRESS YOURSELF". But don't let this album get to your head. When you listen to it, remember that these guys told everyone in interviews that they aren't gangbangers, they just use that image to make money. For example, Ice Cube isn't really from the "hood". He went to the classy San Fernando Valley High School and took drafting classes at a university in Arizona. Dr Dre and Yella both were part of the famous World Class Wreckin Cru who performed songs wearing sequins, make-up, lip gloss, and more. You might know Ice Cube, Eazy-E, Dr Dre, and MC Ren for their solo CDs, but you haven't really been a fan of them until you peep this album first. This is NWA's second album and went gold when it orginally released in 1988. Enjoy the album when you get it though, this is really a classic in any old skool or gangsta rap collection.

5-0 out of 5 stars The First, and Best, Gangsta CD
Let me start by saying, I love all kinds of music. I am a fan of punk, ska, reggae, classic rock, hop-hop, gangsta, and even a little country music (Johnny Cash). That said, this is the best rap CD ever, bar-none. Straight out of Compton is an energetic opener, and contains one of the phattest beats ever. From the first couple rhymes, to the last, this CD represents what gangsta rap should, and could, have been in modern day. Dr. Dre sounds great on this CD. If you like this, check out Notorious Big. If you are a hip-hop fan, buy some Biz Markie CDs. And while I really don't care for his music, I geuss Tupac Shakur would be another good artist to add to your collection. NWA has inspired these guys (With the exception of Biz), and they are in some circles just as great. GET THIS ALBUM! ... Read more

Editorial Review

1989's Straight Outta Compton, by Dre's previous outfit N.W.A., may have shined the public spotlight on the genre, but The Chronic legitimized it. That is not to say that Snoop Doggy Dogg (The Chronic marks his debut) and Dre's raps are for everyone; the subject matter is the sex, drugs, violence, and politics of South Central Los Angeles, and the phrasing is explicit, to say the least. But The Chronic's real genius is the music. By breeding hip-hop, jazz (studio instrumentation includes saxophones and flutes), funk, and soul (sampled artists include Parliament, Donny Hathaway, and Isaac Hayes), Dre creates downright intoxicating grooves. If you can't feel The Chronic pulsating through your veins, maybe your heart's not pumping. --Bill Crandall ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars nuthin but a classic
"The Chronic" is definately one of the best rap albums ever made. It's so perfect because it brought the West Coast beats back alive and every track is tight as, which is what I really look for in rap music. Every time I see an album with Dr. Dre's name on it, I know it's gonna be a tight album because Dr. Dre is simply rap's finest producer ever and his beats are unbelievable and magnificent. All 16 tracks proves this point and to other rappers (except for 2PAC and BIGGIE), it just shows that the other rappers are like ants to Dre. Expect guest appearances from RBX, Daz, Nate Dogg, Kurupt, Lady of Rage and Snoop Dogg.

'Nuthin But a "G" Thang' is simply the best song on the CD and to make things better, it was voted 2nd best rap song made. It's quite chilling and kind of a relaxing song to listen to when you've just had mary-jane. "F*ckin Wit Dre Day" is a diss song aimed at Eazy-E. It's quite sad that these 2 became enemies because they were a fine team around their N.W.A years. Other classics on the CD are "Lil' Ghetto Boy" which outlines a young, black youth's life but the real gem of the CD is without a doubt, "Stranded on Death Row". This is simply one of the BEST songs I'VE EVER HEARD but the sad thing is that Dre isn't on the track. Such a dark but wicked as beat, he should have released this song.

Every album with Dre's name on it, you know that the album is going to be tight. For those that don't like Dre, think again. Dre is one of the most producers of rap music and will continue to be a genius.
One love

5-0 out of 5 stars Definitely A Favorite Of Mine!
This is one of those unique albums you never get enough of. The album is classic from beginning to the end. Dr. Dre and his then fellow label makers hit you with gangsta shhh, straigth up! This introduced the infamous Snoop Doggy Dogg to the rap game together with Tha Dogg Pound, Nate Dogg, The Lady of Rage and RBX (all members of Death Row back in the day). This was realesed in the golden era of Death Row Records (92-96). I wont mention favorite songs 'cause the pretty much all hot. You can chill to this, have an old school party or sit back and smoke a fat ass joint. As Dre says himself. It's The Chronic goddammit! If you're callin yourself a rap fan without this one, get it as fast as possible! Classic!

4-0 out of 5 stars Took a while to get used to...
but once I did, I started listening to it every day. I had been listening to a lot of newer hip hop so it was hard to tune into this, but after I did I realized how great the album really was. I'd recommend this to anyone who likes hip hop. ... Read more

Editorial Review

Chuck D of Public Enemy once prophesized that if artists didn't own their masters (tapes), the masters will own the artists. Well, hip-hop's fave gangster CEO Suge Knight owns most of his former high-profile label mates' master tapes and continues to issue collections of dated works by Tha Dogg Pound, Dr. Dre, and now Snoop. Originally entitled Dead Man Walking to scare the willies out of Snoop, this release comes with a big fat greasy caveat emptor. Sure, this is a ghetto fab collection of the Doggfather's finest pre-No Limit and Doggystyle Records moments dating back to his brilliant cover of Biz Markie's "Vapors" on Tha Doggfather album. That said, Snoop wants nothing to do with this release because he won't receive any proceeds from it and has urged his fans not to buy it. Contractual shenanigans aside, this release is off the hook and contains most of Snoop's finest career headbangers, from "Gin and Juice" to "Who Am I (What's My Name)." A great purchase if you can live with your conscience. --Dalton Higgins ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Worth it If you don't own "DoggyStyle"
Suge Knight strikes again. That is to make money out of his former artists. This album has 16 tracks, 8 of those are unreleased. This album is actually a good release, with these classic hits as "Gin & Juice", "Ain't No Fun", "Doggy Dogg World", "Murder Was the Case", "Who Am I". But all those songs are coming from "Doggystyle. Any Snoop fan have already heard most of the songs from this album. I will just rate the unreleased tracks.

1.Head Doctor - (4/5) by Snoop and Swoop G. This song is actually from the album "Dead Man Walking", which have all but one unreleased tracks on it. This song is pretty good. Classic Snoop.
2.Eastside Party - (4/5) by Snoop and Nate. A good song to chill to. Nate's chorus isn't as good like he usually do. Again Snoop is great here.
3.Midnight Love - (4.5/5) by Snoop, Raphael Saadiq, and Daz. Takes a while to grow on me but an excellent song. Snoop lays two excellent verses while Daz drops an excellent verse. The chorus is cool.
4.DoggFather(Remix) - (1/5) Don't even bother listening to this. I don't like Timbaland's beat.
5. EASTSIDE - (4.5/5) by Snoop, Daz, Tray Dee. Cool Song. These rappers traded excellent verses on a nice beat. Great chorus.
6.Too High (Poly High) - (4.5/5) by Snoop, Daz, and Big Pimpin'. Great song. Good song to chill to. Daz really shines on here.
7.Usual Suspects - (2/5) by Snoop and Threat. Not really feeling this. The beat is lame.
8.Keep it Real - (3/5) by Snoop, Mack 10, Bad Azz, Techniec, Threat and Kurupt. Good song. Not the best though.
9.Snoop Bounce - (1/5) by Snoop and Rage Against the Machine. The song is one of the worst I have ever heard. Get this out of here.

Overall, this a good release. If you don't own "Doggystyle", then get this one. It's definitely worth every cent to spend on it. But any true Snoop fan already heard half of the songs on the album. I suggest that you just the download the good unreleased ones (Head Doctor, Eastside Party, Midnight Love, EASTSIDE, Too High).
[!] PEACE [!]

4-0 out of 5 stars 5 for snoop, 4 cos of your conscience
Snoop's lyrics are very sexist and violent, but you can't help fallin in love with his music.
1.Nuthin But A G Thang- Absolute classic, even though it's really Dre's song.
2.Head Doctor- Snoop's voice is weird in this song and i like it. Otherwise average.
3.Gin And Juice- Very good track about what Snoop does when his momma ain't home.
4.Eastside Party- One of many tracks on this album good to chill to.
5.Murder Was The Case Remix- Not as good as the original, but only just. Still a classic.
6.Ain't No Fun (If The Homies Can't Have None)- Very sexist but a head bopper.
7.Doggfather Remix-I don't know what the original was like, but this is my least favorite on the cd.
8.Midnight Love- Another great track to chill to.
9.Eastside- A pretty good track.
10.Who Am I (What's My Name?)- One of my favorite songs of all time. You can't help but dance to it.

11.Doggy Dogg World- Hard to describe, but good to chill to. 11-15 are all good to chill to.
12.Too High- Average.
13.Vapors- I like this one. It's about how they all got to where they're now.
14.Usual Suspects-Nothing special
15.Keep It Real- An East Coast dis. Similar to Eastside.
16.Snoop Bounce (Roc And Roll Remix)- My second to least favorite, but it's definetly different. One of the first rap rock songs, before they knew how to do it.
Buy this if it's cheaper than doggystyle or if you don't care who you're paying money to.

4-0 out of 5 stars A Strange Death Row Release
Do not be fooled when you read the title of this cd. It may say: Snoop Doggy Dogg's Greatest Hits, but it also says "Death Row's" Snoop Doggy Dogg's Greatest hits. Snoop was only with Death Row long enough to make two records, Doggystyle, and Tha Doggfather. Back then, Snoop Dogg had more talent and was still called Snoop Doggy Dogg. This album did not need to be released. All of the good songs on this album are from Snoop's debut-Doggystyle. Death Row also put on a song from Dr. Dre's "The Chronic", "Nuthin' But a 'G' Thang". Another strange thing about this record is that more than half the songs are unreleased. There is only one song from Tha Doggfather. Nonetheless, all of the songs from "Doggystyle", make this a good cd. Pick up "Doggystyle" instead. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Got this CD for one reason only
This instrumental to "House Wife" is the phatest track I've heard in awhile. I first heard it on underground mix show (big up 88.5 FM) with Amel Larrieux's I.N.I. mix over it.....the hottest mix I've heard this year. For those who question why some people buy instrumental? My answer to them is: Some people have a love for music that goes deeper than what an artist is singing or rhyming about. The DJ, the producer, the band in a good artist are what really moves me to buy music. A great artist want sell without good tracks...ie.. Cannibus, Rakims last 2 CDs, PRU and many others. Dre is well known for bringing "melody" to the hip-hop game and this CD is full of it. Favorite Instrumentals: House Wife, The Message, Xxplosive, B!tch Ni@@as and Ackrite.

5-0 out of 5 stars You don't need the rapping to make a good Hip-Hop Album
Remember folks, rapping is just another piece of the Hip-Hop puzzle. Emcees wouldn't even be called rappers if it wasn't for Sugar Hill Gang! In my opinion, this album is better than the regular version, I know, I own both. When you cut away all the (mostly) mediocre rappers, you get the the true soul of Dr. Dre, master producer. The wailing horns, the intricate piano, the heavy rolling bass-lines, the fading african drums, and his perfected synthesizer, all beautiful. Especially with that annoying over-the-hill rapper Snoop, you don't really get to enjoy the music with the regular version. A major plus is that excellent beats make it very easy to kick some raps yourself. A must-have!

5-0 out of 5 stars Dr. Dre: Pure Musical Genius.. .. ..
The Chronic is a professionally produced album from start to finish: seamless. The Chronic became a part of my collection in 1992 and now in 2000 it remains close to my cassette decks and CD players. The entire cast on this album has given their best and it reflects in every track. Dr. Dre is shining on the album, so is Snoop Dogg, The D.O.C., Kurupt, Jewell, Daz, Rage, RBX and everyone else who contributed to this project. Much Love to all the Death Row Inmates. This album defines an era when genuine rap was rushing like honey from a hive. The Chronic is a definite must-have for everyone. The beats and rhymes are in a class of their own. If you look at your collection of music and you dont see The Chronic, go buy 2 copies. Play one and keep one sealed and stored safely. Peace and One Love.

5-0 out of 5 stars THE ALBUM THAT MADE GANGSTA-RAP LUCRATIVE
True, Dr. Dre was partly responsible for the seminal N.W.A.'s debut album STRAIGHT OUTTA COMPTON. But one listen to THE CHRONIC will suggest that Dre was saving his best beats for himself. With a fusion of brilliant studio instrumentation and light funk-laden sampling, whoever argues that Dre's Death Row-era masterpiece THE CHRONIC is NOT the finest produced album in hip-hop history might most likely have his/her claim refuted. Although Dre is far from a spectacular rapper, he has guests like the Dogg Pound, Nate Dogg, and The Lady Of Rage contribute their memorable vocals. But the lyrical star is obviously Snoop Doggy Dogg, who makes his remarkable debut with his trademark laid-back flow on songs like "Nuthin' But A 'G' Thang", "Lil' Ghetto Boy" and "Dre Day". To all future listeners: no fast-forward button is required. You might wear out the rewind button, though.

5-0 out of 5 stars Dr.Dre/Chronic
This is one of the greatest hip hop albums of a time! It must be a classic with cuts like: Nuthin' But A "G" Thang, Let Me Ride, Dre Day, and Lyrical Gangbang. The only thing I didn't like about this album, was the number of skits there were. There was only a few songs that didn't have a long skit in the beginning of it. But besides that. this is a must have album. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Life After Death Row... Results Are Varied.
This was not one of 1996's biggest hitters even with Dr Dre's name on it. This is an album's worth of artists on and associated with Dre's then newly formed Aftermath Records. Although not a terrible effort, it was more of a public setting of a new landmark in Dre's music career to show people (perhaps the infamous Death Row Records too) that it was the case that they needed him more then he needed them as implied on Dre's own track 'Been There Done That'. Still, there are some highlights on '... The Aftermath' but very few artists really get to shine. RBX's 'Blunt Time' and King T's 'Str-8 Gone' are the album's only worth while listeners apart from Dre's solo track.

Either his heart or his head were not really in this album as the majority of production held by the Doctor is not up to scratch compared with his debut 'The Chronic' or various other produced tracks on ex-labelmates albums, Snoop Doggy Dogg - (Gin & Juice) and Tupac Shakur - (California Love). '... The Aftermath' is more of a declaration of independance rather then a wannabe platinum album as I believe Dre could easily have invested just a little more time into this album by adding a hit track or two, however the album fails to kickstart anywhere from the beginning through to the end. For hardcore fans only.

2-0 out of 5 stars So Poor, So Bad...
I bought this album simply because I owned The Chronic and 2001 and I loved them both... But this.. Well, this can't be considered a Dr. Dre CD.
First of all, just one of the sixteen songs in this CD is Dre's. So Dre is presenting something (his label), but it doesn't mean he's presenting himself, if you know what I mean.
This album has a lot of gangsta raps like Been There Done That (by Dr, Dre), but also "soul" raps (calm raps) like Choices (by Kim Summerson).
But what you must really be asking yourself is: is this CD worth my money? The answer is no, unless you're a total hardcore Dre fan and you want to own every CD with his name on it. Well, because, in my opinion, he's just a mere guest in this CD.
So if you're looking for a good Dr. Dre CD, look elsewhere for The Chronic or 2001. If you're looking for quality rap, look elsewhere too.

1-0 out of 5 stars AFTERMATH OF A HORRIBLE CD!!!
This is dr dre's worst album ever.It seems it was rushed and made in a day.All the songs are boring and the production sucks.I will try and forget that dre ever made this cd.DO NOT BUY THIS GARBAGE!!! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The best coverage of hip hop and dance music.
Most of Urb's readers are rabid "underground" dance/hip hop fans who get outraged at any hint that the magazine is selling out. The fact that this magazine attracts these sort of people is a very good sign.

The pages are always packed with reviews and articles about artists and albums that are new to me. Their year-end lists are some of the best around. Their articles tell what the artists' music sounds like, instead of what celebrities they are dating/how they'd spend $848(*COUGH* Blender! *COUGH*)/what their childhoods were like/etc.

$ is more than most other music magazines, but if you are truly interested in dance and hip hop it's well worth the money.

5-0 out of 5 stars REAL HIP-HOP!!!
This magazine is the real deal Holyfield! They tell you somethings you can't find anywhere else. They'll tell you about up and coming artists and underground artists that are still hungry and at the top of their game, not about these commercial cats that lost love for the art. ... Read more

Editorial Review

Slicker and more uptown than competitors The Source and XXL, Vibe covers hip-hop culture in its many forms. The primary focus, of course, is music, but urban fashion also receives lavish treatment, and each issue contains a least a dash of movies, technology, sports, and politics. Celebrities tend to dominate its well-photographed and well-designed pages, but there's also room for more substantive fare (such as a touching report on "chickenheads"--rap-world groupies--who deserve better than they get from their often-abusive lovers). Covering a culture that is frequently misogynistic and homophobic, Vibe is both women- and gay-friendly, and surprisingly broad in its interpretation of who's cool enough for hip-hop: Elton John (for his Grammy duet with Eminem), maverick senator Jim Jeffords, and Seattle Mariners baseball star Ichiro Suzuki. --Keith Moerer ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Highly entertaining!!
Vibe is the reason I read magazines! I have been a fan of Vibe since the first issue in 1993 and have been hooked ever since. It's insightful, refreshing, exciting and interesting all wrapped into one. In one article, Outkast's {who is one of my favorite rap groups}album was described as "more crunk with funk than 50 skunks in a trunk"! With interviews with top celebrities in fashion, music, and movies, Vibe is your one stop shop for all your latest entertainment needs. I love the often humor-filled, reader-written "20 Questions" along with the a spotlight on the up and coming acts. I even bought the tribute book by Vibe on Tupac Shakur. I highly recommend this magazine for anyone who loves any and every genre of music.

4-0 out of 5 stars A decent staple of urban culture.
Within its few years since inception, Vibe magazine has grown to be a staple in urban/hip-hop culture. To its credit, Vibe covers considerable ground: r&b, neo soul, hip hop and reggae. Its focus is music, but it also reaches out to cinema, current events, sports, and television. Apparently, Vibe isn't afraid to push the envelope and tackle non-mainstream issues: they even did an article on hip hop culture in the Black gay community, which ended up being one of the very best articles the magazine has published. While Vibe is often guilty of hyping "hot" artists that are of dubious quality (Ashanti, Destiny's Child, etc), they also feature articles on talented artists that have yet to make it big. Overall, this magazine comes with my stamp of approval.
