4-0 out of 5 stars The Mens Room
Esquire magazine covers a wide range of subjects for the modern male in today's America. It's much more sophisticated then other mens fare, like Maxim, Stuff and Playboy--not that there's anything wrong with those publications mind you. Esquire has no problem profiling a beautiful leading lady every now and then, it just does so much less in your face or obvious. I have also found that the stories are much more in depth. It also is a good place to read solid fiction from time to time-from some of today's popular writers. Politics Entertaiment, World Events, Sports and Fashion are all given their due. But at the same time it also has enough room for the fluff stuff as well.

Rcommended read and well worth the cost.

3-0 out of 5 stars Better than the competition
I use to enjoy Playboy, yet it has devolved into another typical guy mag (i.e. FHM). I gave Esquire a shot given the positive reviews & exceptional price. While it's not bad, on average I have found the magazine mediocre. Some issues are better than others, sometimes there is interesting commentary, interviews, stories, etc. Unfortunately, there seems to be a fair bit of the fluff that you also find in the other mags as well. In addition, much of the writing is generally a bit weak IMHO. Overall it's not bad; although, I gave an extra star for the price. Worth a look for 8$.

5-0 out of 5 stars What Men Need to Know
This is the ultimate magazine for sophisticated men.
    =
It deals with every issue of concern to masters of the
Universe -- money, clothes, cars, life-style, and of
course, women. The only thing is that this magazine
handles these topics in a much more elegant manner than
    Maxim, Playboy, GQ, what-have-you.

For example, there have been tremendously enlightening
articles about cutting edge books, music, even a vocal
instruction cd called "Voice Lessons to Go" and a sex
instruction dvd which was awesome called "New Sex Now"
have been brought to my attention through this
    excellent monthly.

    =
I read this magazine carefully, especially the annual
lists of things men need to know about. It's not something
to read on the subway -- rather, take it to the cabin
in the country and ponder every word in your favorite
    chair with a single-malt. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Magazine
I really enjoyed my subscription to Parents Magazine while I was pregnant and during the first year of our daughter life. I liked the product recalls...found it very helpful. I now buy it at the store when I am wanting a magazine. There is things I think they should change with this magazine but overall it is worth buying.
Great gift if you know a new mommy that isn't already getting this in the mail.

3-0 out of 5 stars Should change its name to 'Mothers'
As is true of most of the mainstream parenting magazines, I find the articles almost exclusively geared toward mothers, rather than (both) parents -- only rarely to fathers. Perhaps this is a little less true of this pub. than of its chief competitor, "Parenting."The voice of the articles often specifically addresses the mother/female half of the parenting team and the features with beauty tips in the "taking care of yourself" vain are pure fluff, more appropriate to 'Vogue' or 'Self' and of course, again, never addressing the male half of the parent team.

I agree with other reviewers who have noted that the general tone of many of the articles seem to be mostly aimed at upper income, traditional families. While we can often find something of interest/use in this mag. As'older' (over 40) parents of a 3-yr. old transculturally adopted daughter, this targetting is makes the magazine less useful than it could be. As the 'father' half of the team, I find it even less helpful, although, if I had to choose between this pub. and "Parenting" I would opt. for this one.

I guess the marketeers believe that fathers don't read magazines about parenting, and saddly maybe this is mostly true, but I would love to see a magazine that is truely devoted to parenthood -- all types and all both halves. This ain't it.

4-0 out of 5 stars Raising Kids in the Modern World
Parents magazine is a very good publication about raising kids to be happy, healthy adults. It offers some good advice about the task of parenthood, illustrating the hard work and rewards that go hand in hand if parents perform their role in the best possible manner.

I like this magazine as a whole, but there are a few things that potential readers need to know about before they pick up a copy to read. First of all, the articles in Parents magazine deal mostly with younger children, below twelve years of age. You won't find much of value in this magazine if you have teenagers. It is intended more for families with youngsters.

Another thing about this magazine that makes it less practical than it otherwise would be is the suggestions for family activities. The ideas presented here are all pretty good, but the problem is that the majority of them involve outlays of cash and/or time that are unrealistic for most families. I can agree, for example, that adding a game room would make a nice addition to one's house and would add tremendously to a family's time spent together. But how many among us can afford a home addition? Parents magazine talks about activities and enhancements like this in an unrealistic way, making them seem much simpler and easier to implement than they really are.

Aside from distractions like that, however, Parents is a very good magazine to read. It's one of the longest magazines you can buy, with 200 to 300 pages per issue. Add to that the low subscription price, a few pages of coupons, and the generally sound parental advice and you have all the makings of a good magazine for young families.

    Editorial Review

New York magazine operates under the widely (if locally) held belief that New York City is the center of the universe. Savvy, sophisticated, and bursting with East Coast attitude, New York is a stylish source for quick, easy-to-digest weekly entertainment aimed at your inner New Yorker. The focus is on the celebrity scene, dining out, fashion, arts and nightlife, and city news and politics, along with thorough weekly event listings. Cover stories are very city-centric, but they really get rolling when a scandal blows into town--New York has covered them all, from the "Preppy Murder" trial to the Woody Allen/Soon-Yi Previn affair. --Brad Thomas Parsons ... it would be nice if i were writing about the magazine CONTENT here but since i never received a single copy of my subscription.all i can say is their customer serviceSUCKS !!!! after repeated attempts to correct the delivery address or find out what happened the issue still hasn't been resolved.

NOTE;i've had a number of delivery problems when ordering magazineson amazon (there might be some glitch) .however the other magazines have quickly correctedthe problem soon after contact.

2-0 out of 5 stars UES
Great magazine, that is if you are rich and live on the Upper East Side.

4-0 out of 5 stars Mixed bag...
Some plusses and minuses with this magazine..First I just LOVE the crossword puzzle. Its alot of fun, usually has a twist of irony but still makes you think but is do-able for most people...unlike say the Times..which I have alot of difficulty with. I love that it is a weekly magazine..When so many magazines have gone to 10, or even 6 issues a year...its just plain nice to get one this often... The topics are current and timly. Some are downright fun in an escapist way... I enjoy the resturant reviews quite a bit.

That said...The products are petty much out of my reach. It is definately for an upscale audience with a high income.I like reading about these things sometimes but I do get a bit weary of reading about a new designer renovating a brownstone, yet again...or what a socailite serves for lunch.I don't feel this is the general focus of the magazine (say like town&country) so I do keep reading it on a semi-regular basis.

Interestingly the times I have subscribed on a more regular basis generally were times I lived away from the area.Nostalgia, I guess.I can't really see the appeal for this magazine to an audience outside the metropolitan are.It seems to me that its a more local, albeit not small, magazine... ... 1-0 out of 5 stars Promoting another Racist
Not again, Details Mag has another Racist thing going again, this time they are promoting Mark Wahlberg, who was arrested for beating and assaulting Asian people. What is up with Details magazine???. Promoting racist ideasmakes stupid people like Mark Wahlberg do stupid things. It adds up to tax payers' money, we the smart people have to keep losers like Mark Wahlberg in jail. Details sucks ass. Read something else people! The magazine has been discounted so much-it means the magazine is bad, the publisher is trying to get more readers to read this junk. They lost customers.

Lighthearted perspectives give way to hard-hitting articles on industry trends, while historic references pay homage to some of the world's all-time-great business leaders. 4-0 out of 5 stars Uneven
If you're going to publish a business magazine, then you should publish articles that are useful to people in business. Business 2.0 does this, but only with every second or so issue. In between, they publish a lot of vapid, unfocused material that is unworthy of publication anywhere.

The good articles are worth enough to me that I'll continue to subscribe, but I wish they'd get their act together.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good for keeping on top of a lot of business topics
I have been a subscriber for some time. It's a business publication that does not focus solely on Wall Street financials - they are there to a lesser degree but this is not the publication if that is what you are looking for. Think entrepreneur or general business topics and that's Business 2.0. It does not focus on one topic or industry but covers all to some degree - think `oddball' as well. Monthly sections include `What's Next', `What Works', `What's Cool'. The articles are cutting edge in some cases, well researched and well written with an informal slant. They cover tech, marketing, product development, product design, ideas, new products and services, M&A's and a wide range of general business topics. You will find out about new things before most of your coworkers, giving you interesting conversation fodder for the water cooler, happy-hour settings. To go even further in figuring out their demographics and target market/s, the ads include autos like Camry, Land Rover LR3, Mini Cooper and even the Porsche Boxster, Laptops, Business Productivity Software like Office 2003, Business Products like copiers and printers, Mobile calling plans, HP, Credit Cards and even Lufthansa airline. So if you are not in this demographic, maybe they're not targeting your demographic. Why Buy: You are an up and coming business major or business professional in your `building your career foundation' of your career. You are entrepreneurial minded. You want to keep on top of a wide range of business topics and even some that are not yet making the news. As a gift for someone with these interests.

2-0 out of 5 stars amazon is incredibly overpriced on this
amazon sells a one year subscription for $14 which includes a $5 amazon certificate that you get later.

in the actual magazine, the subscription card is 6.99 for one year or 2 years for $10.00

so use the card, save some money and also dont have to wait for your $5 back and then find something at amazon that you can use the $5 certificate on.

4-0 out of 5 stars Finally, Women I Find Attractive
Keep your Maxims.Keep your Blenders.Keep your Stuffs.Keep Your FHMs.Hell, keep any magazine with frail and sickly looking women on them.To quote a verse from Sir Mix A Lot's "Baby Got Back": "To the beanpole dames in the magazines, you ain't it Ms. Thing."This magazine is all I've ever asked for and then some. The women on the cover are women that I actually find attractive, not the skinny chicks that are nothing more than pretty faces (and sometimes they aren't even that).I won't get into color and all that, but we all know who those other magazines are made for and I guess that's why the chicks that could use a meal or two always make the cover. To be honest with you, I still don't understand the logic behind that.I also fail to see the attraction to women that have their entire rib cage showing, but hey, to each his own I guess.King Magazine contains everything I've ever wanted in a men's magazine: stunning women of ALL colors, music reviews, fashion tips and articles to read after you're done drooling at the women.I highly reccomend this to everyone.

5-0 out of 5 stars The women are smoking...
I don't know why it took so long for a magazine to come out with women models with meat/curves on their bodies.I agree with the previous reviewer that I just don't "get off" on the thin girls in Maxim, FHM, etc.I am a male hispanic and I just subscribed to this magazine not only for the hot curvacious women but they got some pretty cool articles and interviews.About time!

3-0 out of 5 stars It's What Men Like to Read
Men's Journal is a decent magazine full of varied topics of interest to men. This magazine covers areas like sports, adventure travel, fashion and style, cars and trucks, career issues, etc. This publication directs all of its articles toward men, with an emphasis on what is most appealing to males throughout a typical week in their lives.

One thing about Men's Journal that is a little different from other men's magazines is that it doesn't flaunt women to sell its issues. In fact, there are practically no pictures of women at all in this publication- something that will be considered an asset to some, and a liability to others. This magazine refuses to play the female card and instead focuses its articles on topics that men like to read about.

Men's Journal is often obsessed with lists, and I think this is especially true in the last few years. Take a look at the cover of most issues and you will see a large, boldface advertisement for some sort of list. In one issue, it might be a ranking of the best cities for entry level jobs. In another issue, it might be a listing of the best places for young entrepreneurs. Whatever it might be, Men's Journal seems to have an infatuation with lists, probably because men like lists and it helps increase sales.

This magazine can be counted on to produce some fairly good reading, but I must warn that many of the articles are a little too simplistic, with little emphasis on intellectualism. Even the articles about politics and business are often riddled with obvious statements that most anyone would know. But overall, I still think Men's Journal is a good magazine. It is varied enough that most anyone will find something interesting to read and the price is very low.

5-0 out of 5 stars Longtime Reader and Subscriber
I've been reading Men's Journal since the first issue. I've always enjoyed its mix of content. MJ interviews a wide range of interesting individuals. Over the years I've incorporated some of the workout tips from MJ's fitness pages into my workout routine. I especially enjoy reading the product reviews. The travel recommendations are always well written, if not sometimes beyond the budget of most readers (myself included!). Overall, Men's Journal offers a great mix of well written content.

4-0 out of 5 stars Interesting
The main articles are pretty interesting.I wish the rest of the articles would have more detail though.I like this magazine, it covers many subjects and is fun to read.I think it has more room to grow covering many more guys stuff like home repair and hunting.I look forward to continuing with my subscription. ... Harper's is the best if you enjoy high fashion.Yes, most of the items featured are completely unaffordable for the average person. However, by looking at the featured designer items and the gorgeous photo layouts, you can get an idea of what's fashionable or will be fashionable in about 2 months. If you want to stay ahead of the trends, this is a must-have.

Don't worry, this isn't your mother's magazine; Redbook is loaded with steamy Cosmo-like articles (in other words, sex, sex, sex), only now they're covered under "Love and Marriage" and deal with helping you keep things together at home (including a monthly Q&A with John Gray called "Passionate Monogamy"). From here, Redbook branches out, with sections on kids and parenting, food, health and fitness, beauty, fashion, celebrity profiles, short fiction, book excerpts, and making time for yourself. --Jenny Brown ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Value!Filled with useable info.
I really like this magazine, even if its a woman's magazine.Often I find these types of magazines filled with advertisements and articles that never seem to fit a real persons every day life. This magazine features a nice cross section of information on fashion, decorating, cooking, and relationships.I always find something interesting to read in here.

    4-0 out of 5 stars Well-rounded!
I really like the fact that the publishers really listen to their readers.Every year (or is it twice a year?) there is a survey included in the magazine for people to give their opinions about articles they enjoy and those they would rather do without.

I've been reading this for the past 2 years at my local bookstore (and finally subscribed earlier this year).I've seen an improvement not only in the magazine's layout, but in the content as well.I really like how there are "sections" on personal well-being, fashion, motherhood, etc.Since I'm not a parent (yet), I can easily skip over the motherhood section.Because of the layout, it's not hard to flip through and find what I'm looking for.

3-0 out of 5 stars Not Mao's Vision!
I subscribed to Redbook to rekindle memories of my glory days. In 1968, at the gates of Berkeley's Sproul Plaza, my fellow White Panthers and I sold copies of Mao's little Redbook.Boy, have times changed!!In the sixties, Mao prescribed hunger and hard work for The People... making them too worn out to question what is best for them -- The Revolution!Today's Redbook wears The People out with capitalist trivia!!Alas, the end result of Mao's Redbook and the current version are similar:The People are led to conformity and full acceptance of their all-knowing leader. But in this reader's humble opinion, Mao's vision reaches further than Dr. Phil or Dr. Atkins!I call upon Redbook to return to its original vision!!Power to the People!!!By the way, the jello salad recipe (May, page 74) is to die for!.... I recommend using the *small* marshmallows:-)Enjoy! ... Read more
