The New York City Ballet Workout Average Customer Review: VHS Tape (27 March, 2001) list price: $14.99 -- our price: $13.49 (price subject to change: see help) US | Canada | United Kingdom | Germany | France Editorial Review Do you envy ballet dancers their long, lean bodies and graceful, elegant movements? This beautifully produced exercise video was developed by Peter Martins and the New York City Ballet with the New York Sports Club. First you watch the rippling muscles of four gorgeous ballet dancers (two men and two women) performing warm-up moves to classical ballet music. Martins uses ballet terminology in his cuing and no technique is taught, so it's look-and-follow if you have no previous ballet training. Next you get down on a mat for slow lower-body stretches. A difficult abdominal series is next, followed by "floor barre" exercises to tone the thighs and buttocks while still using the abdominals. After introducing moves to strengthen the back and upper body, Martins runs through a series of standing exercise segments using various ballet movements to strengthen the legs and postural muscles. The workout is divided into 17 short sections, which may give it a disjointed feeling if you're used to more continuity. At the end is a bonus sequence with profiles of the four performers, all dancers with the New York City Ballet. We get to watch them performing, practicing, and eating. One dancer makes the point that ballet is very athletic, but because it's supposed to look ethereal, the hard work stays hidden from the audience. If you love ballet (even just watching it), you'll enjoy this workout. (By the way, Sarah Jessica Parker introduces the video but does not have any other role in it.) --Joan Price ... The Ballet Workout Average Customer Review: VHS Tape (14 November, 1989) list price: $19.95 -- our price: $18.95 (price subject to change: see help) US | Canada | United Kingdom | Germany | France Editorial Review The title is somewhat a misnomer: this 83-minute video isn't a "workout" so much as a ballet class. If you've taken ballet in the past--or if you've always wanted to--pull on your tights and leg warmers and enjoy this video. Melissa Lowe, a former soloist and principal dancer with several ballet companies, leads two levels of workout. Level 1 is for those with little or no ballet training; ballet experience is helpful for level 2. Each level has three segments: floor work (stretches to warm up the muscles), barre work (standing exercises and positions done holding onto a barre or chair), and center work (more intense conditioning with balance, traveling, and some jumping). If you're not already flexible, you'll find the stretches daunting, even at level 1. This is a 1984 video and doesn't have the production quality you find in more current videos, but ballet is timeless. The music is solo piano--just like in ballet class. The lithe, willowy instructor doesn't smile or try to engage the audience, but she sure knows ballet, and her flexibility and grace are awe inspiring. --Joan Price ... Read more Features Reviews (28)
The only drawback I see (and I agree with other reviewers) is that I wish she had explained more of the moves as you do them. She never really explains them and then expects you to figure them out as you dance (while your eyes are down at the floor or following your hand)?!!You have to watch and memorize the tape before you can do the moves, frankly -- which if you have prior ballet experience is somewhat easy to pick up on, but frustrating, none the less, at least at first!I love the music she chooses, but the exercises are a bit short.I wish she had done them twice on each leg or made them a bit longer like many of the classes that I have taken.Still, I am happy and look forward to my "class" every day I do them.I recommend the second workout in her series for a more advanced dancer.Personally, I am still working on the first (even though I have enough "knowledge" to keep up with the second) simply b/c I need to get back in shape again.Enjoy your workout! Oh, and Miss Lowe is a typical "dancer," so I didn't expect to be "entertained" during her explanations. Her dancing makes up plenty for others' comments about her "dryness" of personality in reaching out to the video audience.I thought she was splendid, and is a beautiful dancer and example to follow! My understanding of dancing, and what I need to do to be a good dancer, is enhanced and strengthened by simply watching her . . .

American Ballet Theatre Now: Highlights from the ABT Repertoire Director: Judy Kinberg, Thomas Grimm Average Customer Review: VHS Tape (13 May, 1998) list price: $29.95 -- our price: $28.45 (price subject to change: see help) US | Canada | United Kingdom | Germany | France Editorial Review This is a dazzling display of choreographic and dancingvirtuosity, presenting nearly 20 soloists and an excellentprecise corps in traditional and modern ballet highlights. The American Ballet Theatre is a thoroughly internationalcompany, "bringing together," as Natalia Makarova says in an introduction, "the best dancers and choreographersfrom all over the world." That ambitious claim is fully justified by brilliant performances, ranging from Sleeping Beauty and Swan Lake tothe world premiere of Nacho Duato's postmodern Remansofor three rather athletic male dancers, Anthony Tudor's exquisiteThe Leaves Are Fading, the sentimental Cruel Worldof James Kudelka, and the dreamlike Balcony Scene from Sir KennethMacMillan's (and Prokofiev's) Romeo and Juliet. Most of thenumbers are pas de deux; women are spotlighted (notably Susan Jaffe,Amanda McKerrow, and Julie Kent), but men get in some impressivesteps besides doing the heavy lifting.--Joe McLellan ... Apart from the goofy look and feel, my main criticism is that while this workout would be great to do in a real ballet studio, it's hard to do in your living room; the floor work requires a lot of space, and you really need a barre for the barre work. For a better workout I'd probably turn to the NY City Ballet Workout. Not only is is more attractive (the music and staging is better and the dancers are completely gorgeous), but it's a lot easier to follow. Also, it's more ideally suited to the home video format than Lowe's bizarro home ballet class. And no fuschia leotards! ... Read more Asin: 6302870305 |

This video teaches your muscles to work the way a dancer's muscles should, so when you go to class, you will be able to receive the full effect of teaching instruction.I live 45 minutes away from the ballet studio, so I like this video because I can practice as often as I should to keep my body ready to dance. There is something fascinating here foreveryone:for dancers, a chance to compare training methods and styles;for balletomanes, scenes of past, present and future great dancers; and forpeople new to ballet, an illuminating look at the hard work it takes tobecome a great dancer. For a sense of continuity, also see "Childrenof Theatre Street," a 1978 documentary about students at the Kirov(there's a very brief shot of Asylmuratova as a student, sitting at a desk, then looking at the camera), and "The Leningrad Legend," adocumentary about Makarova's first return to the Kirov after her defectionmany years before (Asylmuratova has become the Kirov's prima ballerina, andseveral of her former classmates are also rising stars of the company).

The Turning Point Director: Herbert Ross Average Customer Review: VHS Tape (03 February, 1998) list price: $9.98 US | Canada | United Kingdom | Germany | France Editorial Review Mikhail Baryshnikov made his film debut in this lightweight but entertaining drama about the relationship between a renowned ballerina (Anne Bancroft) and the woman (Shirley MacLaine) who had trained with her but had given up dance to become a wife, mother, and teacher. Between MacLaine's envy over her friend's career and the attention her own ballerina daughter (Leslie Browne) is getting, MacLaine's character goes through a complicated crisis. The two actresses carry the story very well and probably camouflage its thinness; they even make a somewhat condescending climax involving a catfight seem like a good idea. A subplot involving a developing romance between the virginal Browne and Baryshnikov's womanizer makes for pretty window dressing. More memorable are dance sequences featuring each in splendid performance. Baryshnikov's leaps are something to behold. --Tom Keogh ... Read more Features Reviews (30)

Center Stage Director: Nicholas Hytner Average Customer Review: VHS Tape (27 February, 2001) list price: $14.95 -- our price: $12.99 (price subject to change: see help) US | Canada | United Kingdom | Germany | France Editorial Review The primary appeal of dance movies is the dancing, with some added emphasis on the romance the art expresses. Center Stage wins on these counts, despite its reveling in overly familiar characters and formula plotting. Or maybe this reveling is responsible for what goofy fun this film is. The arduous task of becoming a professional ballet dancer is incarnated by many good-looking teens, all stock dance-film characters affectionately portrayed mostly by newcomers. But center stage holds Jody Sawyer (Amanda Schull), who may never be a great ballerina, but she's certainly one sexy jazz dancer. Then there's the arrogant genius (Ethan Stiefel), the dictatorial impresario (Peter Gallagher), the demanding instructor, the bulimic, the stage mother, etc. As we follow these characters, the message develops that one should let go and do what feels good. Jody may not be ballet material, but she scorches the stage when she's uninhibited. And that's really the fun of this movie, which is never seriously interested in ballet to begin with. One ludicrous scene depicts one of the dancers quitting because she realizes she never wanted to be a dancer to begin with but was pushed into it by her overbearing mother. She stands up to mom in the lobby of the auditorium where she's supposed to be performing, the music of her piece providing a syrupy backdrop to her little drama. When she's finished talking, she walks off to the audience's unwitting applause. The scene is so ham-handed you can't help but laugh at its audacity, if that's what it is. The rest of the film is not so overdone, but it's all fun. --Jim Gay ... Read more Features Reviews (212)

Save the Last Dance (Special Edition) Director: Thomas Carter (II) Average Customer Review: VHS Tape (06 November, 2001) list price: $9.95 -- our price: $9.45 (price subject to change: see help) US | Canada | United Kingdom | Germany | France Editorial Review Save the Last Dance enjoyed a profitable release in early 2001, with box-office earnings that exceeded anyone's expectations. Its performance illustrates the staying power of a formulaic movie that avoids the pitfalls and clichés that would otherwise render it forgettable. Since there's nothing new here, you'll appreciate the original quirks in a character-based plot that's just around the corner from Flashdance, and just as familiar. Sara (Julia Stiles) gave up a promising ballet career when her mother was killed while rushing to attend her daughter's crucial audition to Juilliard; Sara blames herself for the accident, and at her new, mostly African American high school in Chicago, she's uncertain of her future. Derek (Sean Patrick Thomas) has no such doubts; his own future is bright, and his attraction to Sara is immediate; they connect (predictably), and Sara's dormant funk emerges, with Derek's coaching, as she learns hip-hop dancing in a local club. Obligatory subplots are equally routine: Derek's sister (Kerry Washington) is a single mom struggling with her child's absentee father; Derek's best friend (Fredro Starr) feels trapped in his gangsta lifestyle; and Sara's once-estranged father (Terry Kinney) is doing his best to correct past mistakes. Within the confines of this standard follow-your-dream drama, director Thomas Carter capitalizes on a script that allows these characters to be real, intelligent, and thoughtful about their lives and their futures. It's obvious that Stiles's dancing was intercut with that of a professional double, but that illusion hardly matters when the rest of the movie's so earnestly positive and genuine. --Jeff Shannon ... Once a Dancer by Average Customer Review: Paperback (01 June, 1998) list price: $19.95 -- our price: $13.57 (price subject to change: see help) US | Canada | United Kingdom | Germany | France Editorial Review This unusual, fascinating, and at times almost surreal autobiography chronicles the life of Allegra Kent, one of the most famous--and notorious--of Balanchine's prima ballerinas. The most blatantly erotic of Balanchine ballets were written for her pliant and chilly dance method. This book has it all: art, dance, infidelity, sexual intrigue, histrionics, eccentric outbursts, nose jobs, philosophy, and Krishnamurti. Entirely entertaining and intriguing for both dance enthusiasts and those who don't know a plié from a jeté. ... Read more Reviews (13)
