This magazine is so so.I like it because of it's size.It fits into the elliptical when I work out.The magazine also available in large print for those with bad eyes.The articles are okay.I mostly read this magazine for the humor sections.And the cartoon satire at the back.

Harasses subscribers and their families even after death
My grandmother died seven months ago, and we still get postings marked "BILL" that are requests for renewal. Even after numerous notifications of her death and requests for the mailings to stop, we still receive these fraudulent and offensive "bills."Their customer service representatives patronized and ridiculed my mother, who was significantly ill when she called them to request that they stop sending these mailings.It's tragic, debased, and offensive when Readers Digest preys on senior citizens.

Conservative Family Magazine
"Reader's Digest" has been my favorite general interest magazine for decades. The articles cover a wide array of topics and are either condensed from an original article in another magazine or are written in a condensed form specifically for the magazine. Each issue carries a portion of a non-fiction book written in such a way as to be an article or story and yet give you a flavor of the book itself.

The variety of articles is impressive. Generally there are articles monthly on health and family. Within health are articles on medicine and medical advances, including articles about medical risks. The magazine now has several monthly portions devoted to families and marriage. There are also articles on finances and the economy, international affairs, travel, ecology, science, and a goodly portion of humor.

In more recent years the magazine has added a letters to the editor section and an "Ask Laskas" section where you may ask questions regarding a large variety of subjects.

"Reader's Digest" excels in two areas that are almost opposite to each other. "Reader's Digest" frequently has articles pointing out the incredible behavior of people and the government in articles such as "That's Outrageous." Articles have detailed judges who have behaved in an inappropriate manner, including actions that appear to a lay person to be incompetent, people who deliberately manipulate programs such as Medicare, and contractors who mis-bill for their services or products. These articles have the potential to stun you with the arrogance of some people's behavior. On the opposite end of the spectrum, "Reader's Digest" also focuses on "Everyday Heroes." In this section you may read about people doing the right thing in a variety of circumstances, from saving lives to just making someone's life better. Beyond the regular "Everyday Heroes" section of the magazine are often other articles and stories that highlight people who help others in a variety of ways, often ways that you would never hear from other sources.

Moving into the modern age, "Reader's Digest" also has its own web site, www.rd.com that expands the offerings of the magazine. The web site offers nearly as much value as the magazine itself.

"Reader's Digest" has always several sections of humor, including "Life in these United States," "All in a Day's Work," and "Humor in Uniform." The jokes are generally family friendly, and while many of them will only provoke a smile, a few approach hilarity. Sprinkled throughout the magazine are other jokes at the end of articles. Some are fact based, such as announcements from a variety of organizational bulletins or advertisements that say something other than was originally intended.

The magazine balances its humor portions with mind-challenging puzzles. Each month the magazine provides words to see whether you know their definition in "Word Power." Usually the magazine will also have at least one other word puzzle elsewhere to stretch your mind.

As a magazine for general interest with a focus on family, "Reader's Digest" is an excellent fit. Because of its focus on the family and relatively traditional family values, the magazine reads as a conservative magazine. This magazine rarely, if ever, endorses a controversial position economically or politically, keeping to the right of the middle-of-the-road.

If you find your time to read is limited, and yet want exposure to a variety of subjects and issues, "Reader's Digest" is an excellent magazine. It makes an excellent springboard into a search for more information on a variety of subjects, including other viewpoints to contrast with that of the magazine. Because "Reader's Digest's" articles are brief, expect that for areas of particular interest you will want to seek additional information from other sources. ... Read more

No other weekly like it
This is, plainly put, the best news periodical out there.Sure, others can "report" what's happening in the world, but The Economist includes analysis and puts events in proper perspective to provide the much sought after "why?".Upon hearing of the magazine, the title seemed to suggest a dry, tough read about finance and economics.Not so at all.It's sort of like an international, intelligent version of Time or Newsweek, with a more objective and rational feel.It's a surprisingly easy read as well, with a great informal British style, infused with wit throughout yet always smart and informative.Well worth the price.

If you're going to read only one news periodical . . .
The Economist should be it.It is the most thorough single news periodical out there, period.Enjoy.

It Really Is That Good
Read one Economist article, and you'll know why it's considered in a league of its own, and why everyone from business leaders to Prime Ministers to regular people like you and me love it so much.

One of the best attributes the Economist possesses is its ability to present news and analysis on an unsurpassed intellectual level, while at the same time being very much down to earth, at times even getting comical commentary in. I have never once read an article where I sensed bias. I'm very good at detecting bias, and even when it perhaps is bias I'm inclined with, it ruins the legitimacy for me. You'll notice they do not attribute articles to specific authors. This is because the magazine wants each article to represent the Economist as a whole, and not a particular person. It's a refreshing formula, in an age where some writers feel the need to be long winded and rush to grab individual attention at every turn.

The Economist has been around for 150+ years for good reason. It holds incredible integrity, and it doesn't cater to anyone.

For international news and perspective in particular, I have yet to find a weekly publication on the Economist's level for the mere reason there are none. I'm a student in International Affairs, and the insight and rationality found in the pages devoted to the world, 1/3 of each issue in fact, is the crowning jewel of the magazine. That's in addition to its coverage on business, finance, technology, arts and books. It's truly a complete package.

You probably couldn't do anything better to improve your mind and worldview with a little over $100 than to buy an Economist subscription. ... Read more

Substance as well as style
For my money, "Marie Claire" is the best of the women's fashion magazines.Other reviewers have compared it to "Cosmo," but "Marie Claire" has got a lot more depth to it.Yeah, the fashion spreads and fun articles are there, but this magazine goes beyond the usual fashion mag drivel to actually talk about real issues that affect women all over the world--things like forced arranged marriages, the international trade in sex slaves, how caste affects women in India, etc. etc.Even the fluff pieces are written witha certain amount of insight.The bottom line is that "Marie Claire" actually treats its readers as intelligent beings rather than just consumers of trendy fashion items.
