5-0 out of 5 stars Remember the lemon issue?
I discovered this mag after spending a few months in Britain in the early '90's.I bought every mag I could get my hands on when I was over there (and there are many!); this one is one of the best ones in terms of prose and pics. Most every picture is a work of art.The words are good, no punches are pulled even when such reviews as the Lemon issue would have cost the magazine its life here in the US.
The Lemon issue was done back inApril 1994 when they put a lemon on the front cover with a VW badge on it.Inside, the review started with the VW in the background of a dark alley, a driver's body walking out of the alley tossing the keys to the car in the trash. The review was unforgiving of the reliability of the car.I laughed increduously that they could print it.Several months ago they revisited the review and the reaction it got inside VW.They didn't apologize for doing it, VW didn't yank their advertising(!), and they claim they are as honest today as they were then and at any other time in their history.
    Pretty cool.
The only downside is the price, but the quality is very good. You just need more time to read it than I usually have.Unlike AutoWeek, which is a very easy read even though it is a weekly, I seldom can get through an issue of CAR.If I had hours of free time (as I did in Britain back then) I could get through it but I spend much of my time now keeping current with software and system administration.

5-0 out of 5 stars Cheaper at the newstand...
Here are the facts: this is the best English-language general-interest car magazine in the world. This is a British magazine and you will fall in love with some random car that will never be sold in the states. And this is an expensive magazine. It's actually cheaper to buy on the newstand---try any medium-sized chain bookstore---than by subscription.

Other thoughts...if you like the racy end of the European cars, also check out Evo magazine.

5-0 out of 5 stars for the real automotive enthusiast
The prose, the art direction, the wit -- no other english-language car magazine comes close to this level of perfection. Year-after-year, I feel like a kid unwrapping a gift when I get my monthly issue in the mailbox. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Best weekly car rag
I currently subscribe to three car magazines: Grassroots Motorsports for my bi-monthly amateur motorsports/project car fix, Road & Track for my monthly car comparison and vintage car fix, and Autoweek for my weekly new-car-news-first fix.No other printed publication can touch Autoweek for being the first to press with the latest and greatest car news and racing coverage. And they always do it with beautiful photography, informative and entertaining writing, and an easy-to-read format.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best for news!
While this magazine may be the good for racing and car reviews I keep getting because it gives real NEWS. All the other car magazines have lead times of months or more. Autoweek can tell you what happened last week in the automotive world. Where this appeals to me most is finding out what new cars are coming. If you are someone that wants to know that the new Mini-Cooper is coming this Spring then you could have read it in Autoweek two years ago, with pictures! Learn week by week that the new BMW M3 is delayed, things like that. They often have driving impression reviews months before other car magazines. Another sometimes great part of this magazine is the last page called BWTM for 'But Wait There's More...'. Here they make fun of the automotive news. Other than those sections the full car reviews are average at best, not as good as Car & Driver. The racing coverage of Nascar, F1, Cart and sometimes IRL is good but you only get about 2 pages of each per issue. Not much coverage of other racing. The editorial columns are 2nd rate and not as good as Car & Driver. Buy it for the news, that's my review!

5-0 out of 5 stars Best for racing coverage
Many of the columnists, writers, etc. (Leon Mandel, Rich Ceppos) "graduated" from other, monthly car magazines.Overall, this magazine covers racing much more thoroughly than the monthlies (not surprising, considering that a weekly can cover individual races), yet still extends to individual car reviews and to other aspects of the automotive world (Keith Martin's classic car auction reviews are an example) and industry news events much more quickly, again because AutoWeek can cover those issues almost immediately, as they happen.Still, if you want coverage of Formula One, CART, IRL, and NASCAR, among the major magazines, this is your only choice. ... 1-0 out of 5 stars Test some cars for the "Average" buyer
This magazine is not for the average car buyer. They might as well call this the Robb Report. They only test highend cars and the "best" ones are the ones that go 0-60mph the quickest, not ride nice or get good mpg.

5-0 out of 5 stars Pound by pound the best
In USA, you can't find a better magazine. These is the magazine if you want to know the technical details on a simple but professional way, and at the same time, has great humor. Just check that the other magazines are loaded with C&D former talents.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Best General Interest Car Mag Out There
I subscribe to all of the mainstream North American auto publications, plus several European ones. There are several magazines which drip of advertiser influences. Their car of the year and/or reviews are obviously slanted toward the makers who advertise the most. Wouldn't want to upset the profit apple cart, you know.

Car & Driver, like its sister publication, Road & Track, are both top flight reads, written by engineers and former car industry hacks, who know how to keep it interesting even for those who are less mechanically inclined. The information is complete, the tests are consistent, the photography is top-notch. There is even good humor to be found (John Phillips is a must read).

I've read this magazine for decades, dating back deep into the David E. Davis (now of Automobile Magazine fame), then through the William Jeanes era and now Csaba Csere (pronounced Chubba Chedda). It has been consistently the best overall car writing available for a reasonable price.

If you like Car & Driver, you'll also enjoy Road & Track, Automobile and the weekly AutoWeek. Each are interesting, although reading all of these will get you some overlapping coverage. If your budget and time allows only one subscription, make it C&D or R/T. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Okay only if you're a serious gearhead
In my opinion Road & Track is just okay. While they test the
newest cars and always have the lastest news on the auto industry, the magazine entirely lacks humor and is plain boring. By itself its okay but not when compared to its rivals such as Motor Trend and its sister magazine Car & Driver- which is in my opinion the best by far. Also, Road & Track probably doesn't test half as many cars a year as Car & Driver does and they don't test SUVs, minivans or pickup trucks as does its rivals. Road & Track's writing style can also tend to get boring with not an ounce of humor talking strictly about 'technical' stuff. The editors are also seem to be afraid to criticise poor performing cars, giving instead praise to every car they test.
If the traits of Road & Track forementioned above don't bother you in the slightest, then feel free to subscribe- but make sure you purchase a newsstand copy first just to make sure you like it- otherwise buy Car & Driver or at least Motor Trend.

5-0 out of 5 stars Automotive Journalism at its best
I'm a subscriber to Road & Track, Car and Driver, and Motor Trend. Simply put, R&T is the one I look forward to the most each month.

If you're looking for a well-rounded auto magazine, this is it. In R&T you'll find:
    -Road Tests and First Drives.
-An excellent "Ampersand" monthly feature with all the latest info on future cars and prototypes.
-News about the latest races and drivers.
    -Top-notch photography and art.
-Witty columnists. (see Side Glances by Peter Egan)
    -The occasional technology-related feature.
-Classic cars, classic drivers, classic tracks. The best historical content in the business.
-Very little content on SUVs. (a positive in my book)

    The competitors:
Car and Driver has substantially more road tests and previews, and some good specialty features on a pretty regular basis, but hardly anything on racing and history.

Frankly, Motor Trend isn't anything to write home about. The articles are shorter and less captivating, they can't seem to settle on a design theme, and they also have a lack of racing and historical content.

If I had to pick just one, Road & Track would definitely be my choice.

3-0 out of 5 stars Maybe I'll like it more when I'm older
I'm under 30 and don't remember all the old cars that some of the journalists have such fond memories of.Also, this is a very serious magazine.I can see how the articles and their serious, "just the facts" style can appeal to some people, but I like the lighthearted and funny style of C&D.R&T sometimes seems very dry to me.MT tries to be funny, but it never works.MT writers remind me of people with really bad senses of humor that think they are funny. They wind up just being annoying.I would place this magazine as a middle of the road magazine.Sportscar international and C&D are #1, R&T is in the middle, Automobile slightly lower and MT is the bottom of the barrel ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Worth every dime of the $2.50 per issue subscription.
Well I echo what all the other reviews have said about this magazine.

Subscibing to this magazine is making sure that unbiased articles can still exist for all makes and models of sports cars. You see there are extremely few ads in this magazine and so even though the mag is a bit smaller than say a Car and Driver magazine it is loaded front to back with reviews. One after another. The photography is fantastic and just looking at the pictures makes you wonder what some of the other mainstream magazines could be like if they could just try to put out a better quality product.Even the cardstock of the paper is first rate.It makes the Car and Driver mag feel so cheap in comparison. Both come to my address and I honestly can say that I look forward to both but for different reasons.I first stumbled upon this magazine at an airport 6 years ago and I am so glad that I did.I would love to see more articles with affordable sports car alternatives as they print at the end of each issue.I remember an article about what used sports cars you could buy with certain dollar amounts and this was to me (a man on a budget) a rather nice look at the market as a whole that year. Also we are not all 16 year olds out there subscirbing to this magazine so it would be nice to see Road tests on at least one moderatly priced non exotic each issue.Thank you for putting together such a high quality magazine for your readers to enjoy.

5-0 out of 5 stars Terrific Magazine for Driving Enthusiasts
This is a great magazine for people who like to drive for the fun of it.Rather than try to cover the entire automotive industry like some of the other magazines, Sports Car International focuses on cars that are fun to drive. The articles are interesting and well written. The authors aren't afraid to point out a car's flaws, and the reviews and impressions seem quite balanced.
Most importantly, this magazine is written from the perspective of the driving enthusiast. The authors focus on the things that make a car fun to drive, not stuff like cupholders.
If you're into fun cars, both new and old, this really is a must-have magazine.

5-0 out of 5 stars One of the best sports car magazines
This U.S.-based magazine is easily among the best for sports car enthusiasts.Excellent photography, driving impressions from amateur racers, styling impressions from professional car designers, and thoughtful, very descriptive reviews from all over the world make it my favorite. It easily compares with the best from Europe and the U.S. and is soley focussed on sports cars.No trucks, no SUVs, no minivans.Just excellent sports car reviews and photography.Highly recommended.

SCI would be worth a subscription alone to get access to Peter Brock's articles and photography.Brock is the designer of the Shelby Daytona Coupe and other race and street cars. He's a sculptor and Art Center trained car designer, an engineer, winning race car driver and team manager, excellent photographer and all-around solid sports car guy.He does it all because he loves cars.Same with the other writers and staff of SCI.Love and knowledge of the subject makes Sports Car International great. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Great Sport compact magazine
This magazine is packed full with great down to earth writting and tons and tons of project cars, and with the project cars they tell you EVERYTHING! If you dont like the sport compact cars this might not be the magazine for you but if you do this is the one. Every issue is almost like a book it has so much stuff inside. Get this if you r into and type of sport compact car or just need to fix some stuff on your own!

5-0 out of 5 stars The sports compact scene without the lifestyle BS
This magazine isn't a fashion show about the new youth culture and it doesn't pander to people like some of the car shows on TNN.It stays focused on the cars and doesn't stray to the "lifestyle" aspect of the sport. This is a real magazine for real car guys.I was impressed by the detailed technical sections and by the understandable explanations about how various parts do (and more importantly don't) help your car perform better in the real world. The head to head tests are excellent. There are lots of pictures and features about cool cars, but they haven't pushed the substantive sections of the magazine out - its a very nice combination.

5-0 out of 5 stars Well Written, Informative, and not Boy Racer Friendly
I am a loyal subscriber to SCC, and I must say that it is by far the most well written and technologically informative and up to date automotive magazine in print. One of the things that impresses me about the mag is the fact that they use real horsepower ratings. They measure the amount the car actually puts out to the wheels and not to the flywheel. They also actually know what they are talking about in terms of suspension dynamics and well thought out engine mods. The fact that they focus on more than just the Honda "scene" is also a breath of fresh air.SCC, as its title emphsizes, does cover a niche market, but they are always accurate in their reviews of new cars. These guys are hardcore, and they could care less if the newest import to hit the market has cup holders or not.All they care about is how the car performs, which frankly, is what a technically minded, all go, no show guy or gals wants anyway. The only other mag that can hold a candle to SCC is perhaps Grassroots Motorsports. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars The best
This is the best car magazine for serious car enthusiasts except no substitutes.

4-0 out of 5 stars $15 per issue is a rip.
You can easily pick this up at most major book stores for $5-8 dollars per issue.

3-0 out of 5 stars Pretty good but not $15/issue
For those who love cars and would like to see how the other half lives, this is a great magazine.Highly focused on it's native British market, it makes for interesting and often amusing reading. If we had half the cars currently available in Europe/Great Britain, the big 3 would be gone.

However, a subscription price of nearly $15 per issue is flatly absurd. You can reliably pick this up each month at large book stores. It simply isn't worth that price. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Only for Euro cars sold in USA
Great magazine lots of good tips and nice product reviews. Very entertaining. The only downside it only has info on European cars sold in the US Market, so if you want info on the latest Alfa Romeo or tips on how to improved the performance of your Peugeot 307 this is not the place. On the other hand if you have a VW Gti or a BMW you will love it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Superb auto magazine...
Outstanding magazine for German auto enthusiasts! New car reviews and project cars, some of which go back to the 1970s.

4-0 out of 5 stars The Best European Tuner Magazine I've Read
European Car features a wide variety of new, old, and upcoming European made automobiles. You'll find everything from a hopped up '89 VW GTI, to the lastest masterpiece of Pininfarina. They test creations from every European performance tuner out there, as well as a few vehicles that are completely unadulterated and right from the manufacturer.

If you are looking for a magazine that will review the latest Peugot and tell you trunk space, the number of cup holders, and whether or not it has power windows, this is NOT the magazine for you.

If you are looking for a magazine that gives you a feeling for a customized Euro creation, keeps you updated on their magazine project cars, and is abundant with racing news, I'm sure you'll find what you're looking for. If you're a numbers person, however, you should know that it typically will not give acceleration, quarter mile, or skidpade numbers.
I gave it 4 stars because it accomplishes being what it tries to be as well as, or better than almost every other car magazine out there, and definitely every other import tuner magazine. It's an excellent balance of aftermarket accessories, racing news, new car reviews, and just talkin' cars. ... Read more
