5-0 out of 5 stars Though Modern Painters has fallen off a bit, it still is one of the two best art magazines out there
Along with Parkett, Modern Painters remains one of the two 'must read' art magazines of the day. It has undergone two vast transformations over the last five years. Back in around 2001 it turned into a quarterly magazine and for the next four years it produced exceptional content. Just about every article was thoughtful and full of insights. On top of that they had a first rate callaber of gallery reviewers who highlighted the best shows of the quarter.
1-0 out of 5 stars Beware!
I only recieved 4 out of 6 issues from my subsciption... inquiries to publisher go un-answered... ummm... except for mailings asking me to "renew now!" Gee guys, No Thanks! BEWARE!

2-0 out of 5 stars Sad Decline
I bought this magazine faithfully every month. Then it changed and was a different product altogether. Poorly printed on dull paper, and unexciting with much less information. It was very disappointing change. An not worth the money it costs. I hardly ever buy it any more. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars best general photo trade mag out there
Photo District News is the best general photography trade magazine currently being published. I like how they feature the work of up and coming photographers as well as interviewing key players in the advertising and design communities. It gives a wide view of the industry, outside of the usual technical reviews of equipment, which I find refreshing. The staff hasn't changed much over the years so I do wonder how fresh of a perspective the Sr. Staff has of the industry - but they have added some new columns to the magazine recently which gives me hope that the editorial team is not getting stale. 5-0 out of 5 stars Idea Candy for Experienced and Inexperienced Designers
This magazine is often said to be intended for graphic design newbies. While it is true that if you are inexperienced to graphic design principles and software, this is the magazine for you --it is also true that pros can get a lot of useful ideas from Dynamic Graphics. As an experienced designer, it sometimes helps me to re-visit basic techniques, color use, schemes and read reviews of new design software just hitting the market (they aren't ALL good). Even graphics pros get 'design blocked' from time-to-time.

2-0 out of 5 stars Beware Higher Prices on Amazon Site
This magazine, Artforum International and Art in America are all higher on the amazon.com site than on their respective web sites. Super-natural coincidence, or profit-taking?
1-0 out of 5 stars out of order
I am a practicing artist and would give this magazine 3 stars if I was ever sent one on time. When i subscribed to ArtNews last March, i received the February issue, followed in the next two weeks by the April and March (in that order). huh? So I called customer service and asked for a refund, since it's important for me to have current information on the art world. The lady offers a refund (but only on the issues i hadn't received). Two months later, in july, i got the june issue. again, huh? After cancelling my subscription, I signed up for a new one for Art In America in September. I've called them twice and I still haven't received an issue... and it's three days before xmas. Stick to ArtForum or ArtPapers.

4-0 out of 5 stars And then there is ARTNews
ARTnews takes its hits from readers: paper is not high quality, the inks smear after a couple of readings, there is a lot of `outsider art' in the ads and a lot of competitions, schools, prizes etc most of which seem to stress entrance fees over artistic interest, and the reporting seems weighted to out of focus art shows. But there must be some reason it is still around, despite the competition.ARTnews is a quick read, lots of things happemn between its coevers, and it seems to be of more interest to working artsts than to the big gun collectors and museums. That is fine: the art world is bizarre enough in its diffuse goals (when there are some evident!), and this journal seems to satisfy the casual magazine collector. The writing by contributing editors is definitely improving and some of the critiques are very eloquent.A good bargain art periodical

5-0 out of 5 stars Australian Patchwork & Quilting is the Best
I am an experienced quilter and am familiar with many of the quilting publications currently on the market. In my opinion this is certainly one of the very best.Beautiful quilts for all skill levels and excellent instructions. Exciting patterns and outstanding use of color. Very inspiring. 5-0 out of 5 stars I love the magazine

4-0 out of 5 stars Its definitely a must read
I have to admit I enjoy reading about woodworking almost as much as doing it - just remember I did say "almost"!
4-0 out of 5 stars Popular Wood Reading
It's very easy to write off Popular Woodworking without even reading it.One tends to assume that it is going to be the Readers Digest of woodworking. One imagines countless overly simplified articles on how to build bookcases or select the right shop vacuum.Actually, this couldn't be further from the truth.
4-0 out of 5 stars One of the Best
This magazine surprises me.It looks like just another mass media pulp magazine, but it's really solid on the inside. These guys actually go to the shop and do woodworking. They are enthusiastic, thorough, honest, and funny. The articles seem to aim toward the moderately experienced amateur, but there's plenty of stuff for beginners. And the price can't be beat. This and Fine Woodworking are my favorites - put them together and you have everything you need. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars All about money/collecting
This is without a doubt one of the best magazine/newspapers that you can find to keep up with the coin collecting craze. The only problem I have with it is that sometimes, the paper tries to get in to politics and not coin collecting. The problems that the ANA is/was having has been beaten to death. If you are serious about coin collecting, this is for you. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars I love this magazine
What a great magazine - its like receiving a small book of knitting patterns every few months - most of which are totally wearable. I really feel this mag. rides the line between fashionable and practical. I have gotten 4 issues so far and have knit 1 or more items out of each issue. The directions could use a bit more description - sometimes the designers think you can read their minds, but nothing a trip to the geniuses at the yarn store won't fix. There are also interesting articles about things like merino sheep - something you wouldn't think was interesting, but then you start reading it and can't put it down.
5-0 out of 5 stars One of the best
I learned to knit as a young girl and then life interfered and I dropped out of the craft. About 10 years ago, I picked up a copy of VK and got hooked all over again. The styles in this publication are chic, stylish, and adaptable. Most are for clothing and accessories without the ubiquitous afghan designs. The directions are clear and only once have I encountered an error. The articles are interesting, informative, and often inspire creativity and exploration. As soon as the latest issue hits the mailbox, I'm into it from cover to cover. There are 10 years of issues catalogued in my bookshelf and I refer to them often. A great resource for any knitter.

4-0 out of 5 stars Love the patterns
This is what I use when I want to knit something for myself. The patterns are hip and young and they always feature the latest greatest designers. This is also much more about fashion than any other knitting magazine out there- lots of runway pictures and rail-thin models posing knitwear in exotic locations.I find that each issue has a good mix of projects of varying skill levels.I have knitted several and I'm happy with the instructions and I've never run across any major pattern mistakes.I find that the exact yarns, however, can be hard to find. They usually give you enough information about the yarn and desired effect so that you can easily substitute. While I'm careful not to pick patterns that won't be embarrasing to wear next year, they do have a lot of hyper-trendy patterns. It would be a pity to waste all that time and money on something that would be decidedly "out" by the time you finsih it. ... If you are open minded and passionate.Flaunt is for you. The most amazing photoshoots, with a vision that only a freak can relate too (in a good way).the creativity is always has a unique flavor with a new twist monthly.

5-0 out of 5 stars Such a cool magazine!!!
GREAT photos! Cool little articles, though i would really only get this magazine for the excellent photography because it doesn't really focus on mass-media current events that you'd find in, say, a People or an Us Weekly. It has an upscale feel to it, and you can tell that there is a true vision behind this product. Anyone that is into the arts, particularly coiture, modeling, and photography would love this magazine for its visual energy and eccentricity.

4-0 out of 5 stars Strange, but refreshing
I saw this magazine while browsing a local bookstore and it was a magazine that stood out for some reason...I picked it up and flipped through a few pages and came across an article on Maggie Gyllanhall.I had recently watched "Secretary," and I liked her, so I bought it.I'm not much for fashion magazines but this is much different from others like Vogue. After buying my first Flaunt magazine, I wanted to buy more, but needless to say, the bookstore has not gotten any in for a long time...:(This magazine will be great for readers who are bored with the same crap churned out in every other magazine out there... ... 1-0 out of 5 stars Subscriptions...
After reading a review here mentioning subscription issues I went directly to American Artists web site and ordered a subscription. That was November 23, 2005 and now Feb. 10, 2006 still no magazine. When I finally complained I got a request to send my credit info again to vnu@espcomp.com. Can't say from looking at that address that I have confidence I was communicating with American Artist or a magazine publisher. Would you send your credit info...I think not. I'd say don't blame Amazon as a previous reviewer did.Hey, the magazine is good if you can get a subscription.

5-0 out of 5 stars american artist magazine
I ordered this magazine on February 25, 2005. It is now June 30 and I have not received a single copy. When I try to track this order, which WAS PAID FOR, Amazon tells me I have the wrong order number; this is not so; I have the correct number, Amazon doesn't know how to maintain quality control on subscriptions.
1-0 out of 5 stars They did not honor my suscription
I was pleased with the magazine but even though I renewed my suscription for the third year (and I was charged!) I never got any more magazines. Upon requesting Amazon what had happened, they answered that they would not accept my renewal (no reason whatsoever) that they'd return my money (not yet, after 6 months) and that they would send 2 or 3 issues at no cost for my trouble...(I haven't gotten anything). I don't trust suscriptions throu Amazon anymore. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars pcphoto
A great magazine for digital camera users from beginner to expert. Has great tips and information.

4-0 out of 5 stars Pleasantly surprised
I got a subscription to this magazine as a gift and at first glance, thought it was going to be nothing but lightweight glossy fluff mainly meant to push new products. To be fair, there are plenty of lightweight reviews of new products in each issue, but there are also a surprising number of very useful, practical how-to articles-- mainly geared to novice or intermediate digital photographers (like me!).Yes, I've purchased big thick books on Photoshop before, but somehow, I never gotten to far in actually reading those books (maybe too much info for a hobbiest who doesn't need/won't use 1/2 the features in the product?).I recently switched from using Photoshop to using Photoshop Elements, and this magazine seems to be a nice compliment to that software package. In recent issues, I've learned when and how to effectively use RAW vs JPG, how to take better advantage of graduated ND filters, how to use Levels correctly, etc.The contributing editors are all top-rate as are the photographs and examples.I highly recommend anyone with a new digital SLR and/or new PC image software such as PS Elements, to get this magazine. It's well worth the subscription!

3-0 out of 5 stars Sigh..........................
This use to be a swell magazine for the amateur digital photographer. However, for some reason, this year it has gone more "pro"...which means such things as much more talk of Photoshop; more reviews of really expensive cameras and equipment the amateur would never consider buying; and more ads, ads, ads.Even the price has gone up.Last year, I paid $11.97 using an enclosed subscription card in a magazine. This year the cards show $14.97 for a year's subscription. And I received a renewal letter today from the publisher saying I could have a year for $16.97!Gee, thanks. But no thanks.I'm not interested in a "pro" type of photo magazine. There's already enough of them anyway.

5-0 out of 5 stars What I think of Mary Engelbreit's Home Companion magazine
This is a very interesting publication. It shows different styles of decorating how to incorporate them into your home spaces. It takes you to different areas and reccomends places of interest, shares some recipes, shows some of Marys artwork and gives a page you can frame, if you choose.Mary has different artists work featured and gives you insight as to how they came to do what they do.
5-0 out of 5 stars The only one left.
I had only one non-professional magazine subscription (I'm a graphic designer) up until about two years ago, because that one magazine covered all my periodical interests, and was incredibly beautiful (so much so that I often used its photos as subject matter for my art projects). That magazine was Victoria. I was pretty much at a loss when it stopped coming.
5-0 out of 5 stars surprisingly un-sugary
I've sampled about every home-decor mag out there, and Mary Engelbreit's Home Companion is now on my short list of staples (Elle Decor, Met Home, House & Garden being the others). My taste runs to Hollywood Retro--a little bit sexy, citified and uncluttered, with a dash of humor--and makes use of a lot of thrift-store finds I've customized to the space. Like an earlier reviewer, I'm an unlikely candidate for ME paraphenelia, but her magazine is loaded with clever inspiration, and you won't suffer an overdose of sweetness. I especially like her concentration on the homes and work of independent artists ... and attention to animal causes, which are close to my heart. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Clear, Colorful, Concise, and Comprehensive
Interweave Knits (IK) magazine is, by far, the best knitting magazine on the newsstand.Over the years, I have checked out all of them and there are several reasons why this publication is a "keeper" everytime it arrives. Each issue provides a bountiful assortment of projects. Also, there are clear, well-written instructions for each project and a primer on some aspect of the craft.Every issue includes the basics including a glossary and stitch illustrations. The projects are well written, well illustrated and down to earth.Unlike another high-profile knitting magazine which focuses on haute couture, IK's projects are personable and "user-friendly."

There's a lot I could say about IK, but I don't want to write one of those long winded reviews. Here's the short list of why IK is worth every single penny.

Knits is the standard to which I hold all other knitting and crocheting, and for that matter, all crafts and DIY magazines. It's that well done: thoughtful, clarified, and styley. ... Read more

I am trying to find a pattern and article for Heart Raggedy Quilt. It was in the March 04 issue of either McCalls Quilter or Fons & Potters. Does anyone remember and can you advise?
5-0 out of 5 stars Great all around
This is a great magazine in all aspects of what a quilting magazine should be.There are always a great variety of designs, techniques, and articles describing different quilters and some historical aspects of quilting. This is a 'good read' even if you're not planning to make a quilt.

5-0 out of 5 stars Lots of Variety in Quiltmaker Magazine
This magazine has lots of different types of quilts for the quilter who likes variety. I've been buying it off the newsstands for a while and have found it to be one of my favorite magazines. It has tons of quilts in every issue. Everything from tradtional, and scrap quilts to kids and foundation piecing. If you quilt for children you'll love the great ideas that come with every issue. The magazine is in full color with clear and easy instructions. many patterns also include instructions for different sizes. Lots and lots of fun and original ideas. This is not your run-of-the-mill quilt magazine. If you're looking for creative quilt patterns and the latest on notions and tools, this is the magazine for you.
