Now I know what happened to Magic Crochet AND Decorative Crochet!
From the beginning I started collecting both issue #1 of Magic Crochet & Decorative Crochet. I was drawn first by the diagrams which helped me thru some of the more elabrate worded patterns then found I loved them. Once I moved in the late 1980's I couldn't find either issue for several years. I really missed both not just for the diagrams but they have some of the best patterns and the photograghy was some of the best!
unsatisfactory service
I sent in a subscription to Magic Crochet (which is now Crochet Monthly) over a year ago and received only one magazine. The magazine itself is great but, trying to deal with the company is a nightmare!I never received any response to any of my correspondences sent to the company.I felt very ripped off as, this magazine is on the expensive side. It's better to buy them at a book or retail store; that way at least you know you'll have it!

WARNING - STEER CLEAR OF A SUBSCRIPTION
When this magazine operated under the name Magic Crochet it was a good magazine - if you could get them to send it to you after you paid for your subscription! I received only 3 magazines in a year and no one from the company will even respond to emails or correspondence about why I'm not receiving my issues that are already paid for.Do yourself a favor and if you want copies of Magic Crochet, get them as back issues on EBay.I only gave this magazine 1 star because that's the lowest it went.In truth, it's not the magazine itself that's so bad, it's the company and its lack of customer service. (although the content was better before it became Crochet Monthly too) ... Read more

Bead Beading Magazine out there!!
I find it heard to believe that she never recieved her magazine or even a call back from the company..I know for a fact they are very good about getting orders out promptly, and that if there is a problem they will even compensate you with a comp. issue..The company who publishes this magazines also has several other wonderful publications i.e Step by Step Wire(very popular), Lapidary Jounal, Colored Stone & many more.They also host the biggest beading events in this country..Beadfest Philadelphia, Atlanta & the one in Nashville are a really the best bead shows in this country..If you call 610-232-5710, This person will be sure to take care of the problem you have been having.

INVARIABLY I CAN ALWAYS FIND MORE THAN A FEW PERTINENT DESIGNS.THE DIRECTIONS ARE LAID OUT VERY COMPREHESIVELY.IT IS TRUE, HOWEVER, THAT THE BIGGEST USE I CAN DRAW FROM THIS MAGAZINE IS THE INSPIRATION AND VARIATIONS YOU CAN MAKE ON ANY ONE PIECE.SOME ISSUES ARE SUPERB WHILE OTHERS ARE JUST GOOD.A VARIETY OF MEDIUMS ARE USED (WEAVING, WIRE, POLYMER CLAY, ET.AL) AND I USUALLY WILL ADAPT THE DESIGNS OR ELABORATE UPON THEM.I STILL GO OVER PAST ISSUES FOR HELP AND INSPIRATION.

A good all around choice
As a library administrator I get to see and read an awful lot of woodworking books and magazines.I have been a personal subscriber to Woodworker's Journal for a year now, and an off and on reader of the magazine for about 5 years.In that time I have grown to appreciate this as a very good woodworking magazine.Is it my favorite?No, but I still like it well enough to recommend it to others.I also regularly read Fine Woodworking, Workbench, Wood, Popular Woodworking, etc. and like all of those, this magazine has its strengths.I find that WJ is very into power tools, tool reviews (theirs are among my favorites), and shop projects.Having said all of that, I also must confess that the best piece of furniture I ever built came from a plan in WJ magazine (an arts & crafts style wine storage table), so don't pigeon-hole it too much.
Just the Right Approach
There are two good ways to tell what audience at which a woodworking magazine is aimed.The first is the type of advertising, and the second is how much skill do the projects expect you to have.It is pretty clear right away that Woodworker's journal server home woodworkers who are already of moderate skill.The advertised 'big toys' run in the 500 to 1500 dollar range, although there are a couple of high end combination machines in the adds as well.

Woodworkers Journal has attracted some of my favorite woodworking experts from the other magazines. Michael Dresdner, Ellis Wallentine, Shondor Nagaslaski are all great tool and woodworking experts and give me the information that I need to advance my skills and keep working in the shop interesting. I can hardly wait for the next issue to arrive. It will have shop tips, jigs, finishing tips and projects. No other magazine has this well rounded approach to woodworking. ... Read more

Great design ideas
This is a fabulous magazine!Every issue I enjoy the vast number of designs and techniques within each magazine.The directions are always clear, concise, and correct.Each issue always has a great variety of patterns.I gave this magazine only 4 stars (it probably deserves 4.5) because I enjoy reading about the individual quilters, how they came up with the designs, and how they chose the fabric.Qulter Magazine only gives each pattern a very brief, 1 or 2 sentence glimpse about the quilt.I think I would enjoy it more if the magazine gave more background information.It is a wonderful magazine nonetheless. ... The Most Useful Magazine
The Burda magazine is one of the most rare magazines I have ever seen. If someone is interested in design, sewing and fashion then, this is difinatly a must to have.

Its just a catalog
It is a good magazine, but not a pattern magazine as Burda, it is a catalog of all the vogue patterns, same that you can find at the web site [...] but you must buy each one if you are interested sewing something (they are expensive). Good advertisment that you can use to surf the web.

Modern knitting mag
Creative Knitting is relatively new to the knitting market, a welcome addition. While I haven't subscribed yet, I pick up copies at the newstand and have generally found the quality of the patterns, styles, and articles to be pretty good. The directions for the garments that I've made have been accurate and error free. Except for things like bikinis (who at any agewould wear a hand-knitted bikini?) and slacks (?!), most of the designs are modern and adaptable. With 20 or more projects in each issue, CK is a bargain. Hope these editors and designers keep up the good work. ... Read more

Snappy British Style
I love this magazine! It's fresh and young with modern twists and interesting color combos.There are always plenty of easy to execute projects and features about British artisans.It's also fun to read a magazine completely void of the cliched American country styles.I usually purchase it at a newstandfor $8 or $9 an issue, but they're usually a month or two behind.For instance today they are displaying a Christmas issue when everyone else is on February. ... Very fun magazine
I consider myself still a beginner scrapbooker after purchasing supplies for 3 years now.I just don't have as much time to scrapbook as I would like, but this magazine has great ideas, themes, and advertisements.Lots of ads in this particular magazine have coupons and free items for online purchases, so that has been tons of fun to just see what all I can get at a discount price that I otherwise wouldn't have gotten.I mainly look at the pictures, but the few articles I have read are pretty good, but the pictures are always the best.I love getting magazines that are full of so much helpful information!I think this is a great magazine for the money.

I find this magazine full of ideas and thought provoking. I save them all and have friends that will say they have a need for scrapping ideas and I can go back and look up something for them to use.

Great Magazine: Don't buy through Amazon.
I've purchased this magazine in grocery stores and liked it, so I subscribed through Amazon.The company actually responsible for seeing the subscription is filled is FW PUBLICATIONS.I ordered in March of 2003.September rolled around and I still hadn't seen and issue.After several phone calls to FW Publications, I finally received an issue.I've received four issues total.Here it is, March 2004, and they've stopped sending magazines.Apparently they think my subscription is finished after I've received half the magazines I've paid for.It would have been cheaper for me to buy them from the grocery store.Go ahead and subscribe to this magazine, just don't do it through Amazon.Their partner company is VERY UNRELIABLE. ... Unbelievable!
I bought this magazine on a whim because it had an article about portfolios - and it was worth every penny of the $8 I spent on it!As a recent design graduate I wish I would have come across this magazine while I was still in school as it offers examples of student work that has been judged by the best in the business right now.It is also good for those who are trying to find a reputable design school.I have just bought a subscription for a family member of mine that is about to begin design school in the fall and I know it will be a great inspiration!
