5-0 out of 5 stars The Best Magazine -- period.
I will always subscribe to this fabulous magazine. There is so much variety in each issue.I am amazed at how this magazine always get me interested in things that I have never even thought about before. And the way the articles are written, I feel like I am being entertained while I am being informed -- it's awesome! The mix is not just heavy subjects either -- there are always ighter-weight articles too, so I can pick up this magazine on any occasion when I'm in any mood and I can always find something that I want to read about.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent
This is an excellent magazine. There are very few magazines that I choose to read cover to cover. This is one of the few.
5-0 out of 5 stars Literate, authoritative history in a nutshell.
Smithsonian says it like it was, albeit short and sweet.Without sprinkling complex grammar and cute expressions that are the hallmark of so many publications, Smithsonian provides the latest meaningful scholarship, especially if it departs from traditional concepts.Their photos are always profoundly informative and fresh, without cut and paste from the time-honored sources.Their article on Gavrilo Princip, the assassin of Archduke Francis Ferdinand, shook me to the core. Thanks Smithsonian. ... 1-0 out of 5 stars Still have not received this magazine.
I ordered HOW for a graphic designer friend's birthday in January and it is near the end of March and she still has not received anything...
3-0 out of 5 stars The business of design... not design of design.
This would be a great magazine for someone who either owns thier own design business, a pro freelancer or an art director who is high up on the food chain in an agency. Not very good for an entry-level design student such as myself. This magazine is first and foremost about the business of graphic design: how to promote your business, attract and retain clients, how to deal with a team of designers.
3-0 out of 5 stars It maybe designers-must-have... but

2-0 out of 5 stars Not what I was hoping for
I was so excited to receive my first issue of Art In America, and I was severly disappointed to see that it is mostly full-page ads for galleries in Europe. There are very few articles or artist Bios. The photos are beautiful, but don't get this if you were hoping to learn anything about American artists or galleries.

4-0 out of 5 stars The Leader in Art Periodicals
ART IN AMERICA seems to have won the vote for most popular periodical on the arts. The quality of reporting of world events, the informed writers who critique and investigate, and the style of referencing used in the articles makes this magazine immensely readable. This is not the most sophisticated journal of art (MODERN PAINTERS and some of the other European magazines win there), but the balance between coverage of reviews in America as well as the international scene is very fine. Ads are well designed and reproduced - even if there are a few too many for 'vanity spaces'. The constant for all of the available art magazines that can stand as a complaint is the overemphasis on New York gallery reviews: New York is not the hub it once was and the importance of Los Angeles, San Francisco, Chicago, etc is not recognized by the writers/editors.The exhibitions reviewed are solid in reportage, if unduly weighted to the edgy installation and quirky art. But for the August Issues of the Gallery Guide this magazine has them all topped!
4-0 out of 5 stars informative & interesting
A subscription to Art in America is a good way to keep up with what's going on in the "art scene", mostly in the USA, but there are quite a few articles and reports that deal with art worldwide. As an example, the February 2002 issue has "Journey to China", showing the extraordinary work of Ah Xian, a Beijing-born artist who has lived in Australia since 1990. His porcelain portrait busts are inspired and unique, and this one article alone is worth buying the issue for.Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Solid and interesting artists publication
Whether you are a novice or a pro, this magazine is a must. It is not overly technical and it features a variety of media. I am a faithful reader and I frequently commend it to others. My only gripe is the inconsistency of writing. Some articles are little more than glorified captions for a few photographs of an artist's work. Other articles do an excellent job of explaining what the artist did to get the wonderful effect displayed in the photographs of the artwork. I'm more interested in technique than the artist's background and training. All in all, though, buy it you'll like it.
1-0 out of 5 stars hotel art
this is great if you're a hobbyist.or a maker of hotel..no motel paintings.
5-0 out of 5 stars a must for students and teachers of all levels
The Artist's Magazine is full of advice and ideas for anyone studying or teaching art; from its first monthly department, "Dialogue", which is a question and answer column from readers, to the final page "Master Class", which gives the history and analysis of a famous work, you will get articles that cover many techniques and media, as well as guidelines on the business side of art.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Though Modern Painters has fallen off a bit, it still is one of the two best art magazines out there
Along with Parkett, Modern Painters remains one of the two 'must read' art magazines of the day. It has undergone two vast transformations over the last five years. Back in around 2001 it turned into a quarterly magazine and for the next four years it produced exceptional content. Just about every article was thoughtful and full of insights. On top of that they had a first rate callaber of gallery reviewers who highlighted the best shows of the quarter.
1-0 out of 5 stars Beware!
I only recieved 4 out of 6 issues from my subsciption... inquiries to publisher go un-answered... ummm... except for mailings asking me to "renew now!" Gee guys, No Thanks! BEWARE!

2-0 out of 5 stars Sad Decline
I bought this magazine faithfully every month. Then it changed and was a different product altogether. Poorly printed on dull paper, and unexciting with much less information. It was very disappointing change. An not worth the money it costs. I hardly ever buy it any more. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Beware Higher Prices on Amazon Site
This magazine, Artforum International and Art in America are all higher on the amazon.com site than on their respective web sites. Super-natural coincidence, or profit-taking?
1-0 out of 5 stars out of order
I am a practicing artist and would give this magazine 3 stars if I was ever sent one on time. When i subscribed to ArtNews last March, i received the February issue, followed in the next two weeks by the April and March (in that order). huh? So I called customer service and asked for a refund, since it's important for me to have current information on the art world. The lady offers a refund (but only on the issues i hadn't received). Two months later, in july, i got the june issue. again, huh? After cancelling my subscription, I signed up for a new one for Art In America in September. I've called them twice and I still haven't received an issue... and it's three days before xmas. Stick to ArtForum or ArtPapers.

4-0 out of 5 stars And then there is ARTNews
ARTnews takes its hits from readers: paper is not high quality, the inks smear after a couple of readings, there is a lot of `outsider art' in the ads and a lot of competitions, schools, prizes etc most of which seem to stress entrance fees over artistic interest, and the reporting seems weighted to out of focus art shows. But there must be some reason it is still around, despite the competition.ARTnews is a quick read, lots of things happemn between its coevers, and it seems to be of more interest to working artsts than to the big gun collectors and museums. That is fine: the art world is bizarre enough in its diffuse goals (when there are some evident!), and this journal seems to satisfy the casual magazine collector. The writing by contributing editors is definitely improving and some of the critiques are very eloquent.A good bargain art periodical

If you are open minded and passionate.Flaunt is for you. The most amazing photoshoots, with a vision that only a freak can relate too (in a good way).the creativity is always has a unique flavor with a new twist monthly.

5-0 out of 5 stars Such a cool magazine!!!
GREAT photos! Cool little articles, though i would really only get this magazine for the excellent photography because it doesn't really focus on mass-media current events that you'd find in, say, a People or an Us Weekly. It has an upscale feel to it, and you can tell that there is a true vision behind this product. Anyone that is into the arts, particularly coiture, modeling, and photography would love this magazine for its visual energy and eccentricity.

4-0 out of 5 stars Strange, but refreshing
I saw this magazine while browsing a local bookstore and it was a magazine that stood out for some reason...I picked it up and flipped through a few pages and came across an article on Maggie Gyllanhall.I had recently watched "Secretary," and I liked her, so I bought it.I'm not much for fashion magazines but this is much different from others like Vogue. After buying my first Flaunt magazine, I wanted to buy more, but needless to say, the bookstore has not gotten any in for a long time...:(This magazine will be great for readers who are bored with the same crap churned out in every other magazine out there... ... 1-0 out of 5 stars Subscriptions...
After reading a review here mentioning subscription issues I went directly to American Artists web site and ordered a subscription. That was November 23, 2005 and now Feb. 10, 2006 still no magazine. When I finally complained I got a request to send my credit info again to vnu@espcomp.com. Can't say from looking at that address that I have confidence I was communicating with American Artist or a magazine publisher. Would you send your credit info...I think not. I'd say don't blame Amazon as a previous reviewer did.Hey, the magazine is good if you can get a subscription.

5-0 out of 5 stars american artist magazine
I ordered this magazine on February 25, 2005. It is now June 30 and I have not received a single copy. When I try to track this order, which WAS PAID FOR, Amazon tells me I have the wrong order number; this is not so; I have the correct number, Amazon doesn't know how to maintain quality control on subscriptions.
1-0 out of 5 stars They did not honor my suscription
I was pleased with the magazine but even though I renewed my suscription for the third year (and I was charged!) I never got any more magazines. Upon requesting Amazon what had happened, they answered that they would not accept my renewal (no reason whatsoever) that they'd return my money (not yet, after 6 months) and that they would send 2 or 3 issues at no cost for my trouble...(I haven't gotten anything). I don't trust suscriptions throu Amazon anymore. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Best of the watercolor quarterlies
The quarterly magazine "Watercolor Magic" features well-known artists such as George Gibson, Carolyn Lord, Stephen Quiller, and Janet Fish, who share their inspiration and techniques with the readers. There's always something in each issue for both beginning and advanced watercolorists. The magazine is packed with color photographs--even the advertisements are interesting.I only wish it were published more than four times a year.Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Something has happened...
I once subscribed to this magazine for several years through regular mail and loved it, but got extremely frustrated after switching to the E-mail subscription...regular mail just took too long (many deadlines passed by the time it got there) and the E-mail subscription was cheaper. But on E-mail, issues did not come through regularly - I have absolutely no problem with any other on-line services (and never did - I do not have a kick-back/kick-out function under my E-mail system).Sometimes I had to contact them and it would come through quickly, other times it just did not make it...
5-0 out of 5 stars Building your art resume? Here's a terrific resource.
This is my favorite - most helpful - resource for finding out about reputable art shows, grants, calls for art proposals, artist residencies, and more. And yes, there are even articles on marketing and promoting your artwork.
1-0 out of 5 stars Buyer Beware!
As a long time subscriber to this magazine, I have enjoyed and used it quite a bit. However, since changing to an on-line subscription this year, I have not received the past few issues. After repeatedly contacting them I finally was told they were 'busy' since the company is being sold. I requested that my subscription be changed back to regular mail - no response. Neither have I received any issues. Non-responsive with a bad customer attitude. Too bad - this was once a good thing. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Of Excellent Quality
I have kept editions from 1985; they are still in excellent condition.Having not revisited them for many years, I am blown away by the quality of the paper, the photography, the color, and the articles inside.I was so happy when I found out that FMR is still being made and available in the U.S.

5-0 out of 5 stars Art work unto itself
I was introduced to this magazine by a friend who had purchased old copies at a flea market. The paper and printing is of the highest quality and stood the test of time. Copies from 1990 were magnificent. The interior photographs of the art works were amazing and showed incredible detail. And the articles were very well written. Yes, you are introduced to artists and works lesser known to us in America, which is only our loss. I was so happy to find it available at Amazon. It is truly a work of art unto itself.

5-0 out of 5 stars Don't call yourself an art enthusiast until you subscribe
This is a stunning art publication for mainstream readers and art afficianados alike. Its quality and the detail are unmatched. It will be wildly fascinating to those that find pleasure in beauty ---- not just in the famous classics ---- but those artists that never quite made it into the spotlight. Not avilable on newsstands.(I can't believe I lived this long without discovering it.)Kudos to this publisher with such fine, signature work in an age of media consolidation. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars The International Artists Magazine
It's a joy to see this publication in the mail box. There is some article of interest for every artist no matter their choice of medium. Great colorful pages of art & interviews by artists all over the world. If I could choose only one, International Artist would be "it".

2-0 out of 5 stars NOT ENOUGH TECHNIQUE DETAIL
The pantings are nice and colorful and mostly in oil but not enough technique shown to really be of help.

1-0 out of 5 stars mixes editorial content and commerce
I bought a copy of this magazine and initially enjoyed a great deal of it, but ultimately found it distasteful. It was graphically hyperactive, which became distracting and irritating, and there was something else that didn't seem quite right, though at first I couldn't identify just what that was.Eventually I realized that it wasn't making a clear distinction between the editorial content and commerce (items offered by companies advertizing in the magazine, workshops sponsored by the magazine, books sold by the publisher of the magazine).Eventually I figured out that the publisher was Australian. If Rupert Murdoch is any guide, then this magazine is coming from a tradition that doesn't respect boundaries between journalism and financial gain.I ended up putting this magazine aside in distaste. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars NYC life at its best!
I absolutely love this magazine! BlackBook has the latest on everything culture, art and fashion related. The GetLit page is the first place I look when I'm trying to find somewhere new and trendy to go.I recommend this mag to all of my friends, and they love it as much as I do!The BlackList is jam-packed with all the best places to go.I will never miss an issue!

5-0 out of 5 stars One of the best magazines out there for mod culture
Perhaps it is because my view is very NYC-centric but I find this magazine to be a great means of keeping abreast in the progressive culture scene despite my uptown address. The photography is fantastic. Working in headline fashion, this magazine is a great resource for up and coming designers and new things to keep watching. Before something is classifiable as "hip" anywhere else, its here.

3-0 out of 5 stars Cool to look at, but when it comes to reading...
... I don't know.I guess my major complaint is that, if you aren't already privy to the latest in fashion, music, etc (like the other reviewer said, and he's quite right, this is a very hip magazine), then you'll probably feel pretty lowbrow. They don't really try to familiarize you with what's cool like GQ or DETAILS does; you're either in or you're not. However, it's definitely better than FLAUNT, which seems to be trying to imitate BLACK BOOK, in that the photography isn't as pretentious and the articles have a little more substance.Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Great magazine
I buy this magazine on the newsstand whenever I come across it, and I've rarely been disappointed. The magazine focuses squarely on contemporary sculpture and installation art - which means lots of minimalism, abstraction, and innovative use of materials. 5-0 out of 5 stars Fear No Art!!
I discovered this journal recently and couldn't be more thrilled. I realized that I,too,am an "outsider" artist, untrained, 'naive,' and finally, after all these years of being an RN, unafraid to pursue my own art. If you love art and yearn to break the boundaries and confines which we've been taught in the west about art, then you'll love this journal, too. It's raw and it is indeed, visionary and inspiring for those that truly love art for art's sake! ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars A Magazine that is Growing in Importance
SOUTHWEST ART has been around for a long time, a journal that focused on the art of the southwestern regional artists of this country plus a heavy dollop of how-to articles on pastel, watercolor, acrylic, oil etc. It was, and to some extent remains, the chief reference source of cowboy art, Indian art, and the galleries of Santa Fe, Scottsdale, Houston, and environs.

4-0 out of 5 stars Wow
I accidentally happened upon the August 2005 issue and couldn't believe the cover was a pastel.I have dabbled in pastel recently and quickly snatched this up.There are lots of beautiful photographs of contemporary works with features on the artists' themselves, some of which have step by step photos of how the work was achieved. The downside is that there are only 6 issues per year. The back of the magazine has an extensive listing of pastel courses/workshops/exhibitions throughout the US and internationally, taught by prominent pastelists.
