2-0 out of 5 stars Trite and unimaginative
If I see another picture of a blurred waterfall or creek I am going to puke...I have not seen one truly imaginative, artistic image in this magazine. Everything is run of the mill, boring, standard outdoor photography.Lots of sunsets, flower fields. No different angles or perspectives, colors, nothing new.The articles are geared toward inexperienced photographers and really repetitive.I think I clipped one interesting article in a year worth of magazines...

1-0 out of 5 stars One truly great wretched photo magazine
I was a charter subscriber to this magazine when it started up publication. It was a breath of fresh air in a stagnant field of almost universally wretched photography magazines.Over the years things changed.Columnists died or moved on.Editorial directions were switched.Articles that once inspired now only offered consumerist bullfeathers. When digital photography became dominant in the marketplace, "Outdoor Photographer" was in the vanguard, pushing every gadget and Photoshop manipulation plug-in that popped up.The magazine became a wasteland of promises of better pictures if you just buy _____ (fill in the blank with whatever the current trend might be). What I thought was ironic at the time was that the best photographs they printed were being done by photographers using the least sophisticated equipment.Photographers using film (!?), a lot of large format guys, occasionally some black and white and stuff made with cameras just about any serious hobbist already owned. But these portfolios began to dwindle from occasional to rare to almost non-existent.

5-0 out of 5 stars Advanced techniques in an advanced publication
Photo Techniques Magazine can help serious photgraphers hone their craft, with extensive tutorials on shooting, printing, Photoshop, scanning, and other topics. It's invaluable for both film and digital photographers.
5-0 out of 5 stars simply the magazine for photographers
This is the best photo mag for those of us passionate about photography. It has long in debth articles on technique and equipment. Moreover it features "how to" examples from some of the best fine art photographers of our time. It is thus quite different from other magazines that feature some no name staff writer pretending to be Paul Strand. This does make this magazine perhaps less than ideal for the first time casual shutterbug trying out his/her first pocketcam. But for all of us striving to do good photography this magazine has no peer. It is not a glossy magazine and its print quality is rather low. It is a far cry from Phototechnik International or Spoon, but it is about the creating of rather then the displaying of photographs. Having read every photomagazine in the english and german speaking worlds in the last 15 years this is the best.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great Magazine!
While this magazine may not posess the high gloss pages, and gorgeous images taht are typical of photgraphy magazines, they are full of good information that rarely, if ever repeats it's self. They cover a broad range of artists so you also get views of photography from many angles.I Highly recomend it! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars clearly written and substantive
Having given a look at all the American magazines on the market which, over time, rehash the same things over and over in a dumbed down way, I was given a copy of Practical PHotography. It blows the competition out of the water for substance and style.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good techical and gear overview
Good magazine if you like to do equipment comparisons and film comparisons. As well there is photo tips that are practical and intresting.1-0 out of 5 stars Use to be the best, now it's at the bottom.
Throughout the 90's, this was THE best photography magazine on the planet.I probably have every issue from the 90's and for many years had a subscription.I practically learned photography through this mag. However, since the calendar turned to the 2000's, this magazine has slipped considerably, almost off the face of the photographic scene.I dropped my subscription, and now I am lucky if I buy one issue a year if something I see in it catches my eye at the newstand.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Interesting cover to cover.
What I like about this magazine is that the articles are unique and informative.I have bought the last three issues and can't wait for the next one. This magazine covers equipment in a current mode rather than a 6 months to a year behind style so familiar with many of the other photography magazines.
2-0 out of 5 stars Wannabe Pro Photo Magazine
I purchaced this magazine thinking that it would be the next step from the amateur photo magazine level to the serious pro level. In fact, it is not really either.

4-0 out of 5 stars One of the better digital photography magazines
Even though there seem to be hundreds of different digital photography magazines on the newsstand every month, Digital Photo Pro is pretty much the only one that I buy.I don't buy every issue, but seeing as I end up buying about 80% of the issues, I should probably get a subscription!

2-0 out of 5 stars Disappointed
I was receiving Peterson's PHOTOgraphic which I loved. I thought the layout was well organized and the info very informative. Unfortunatley, PHOTOgraphic was recently discontinued and without asking me they automatically switched my subscription to Shutterbug. I can't stand it, the layout is messy, and it's hard to find any real valuable info amongst all those ads. I have to say I'm VERY disappointed and I wish that it was Shutterbug that was discontined. Needless to say, I will not be renewing my subscription...

5-0 out of 5 stars Best Photo Magazine out there!!
Hello. I love this magazine. I've tried all the rest and now I found the best. Many of these reviews have talked about ads and in truth all magazines (Whether they are photo, computer, knitting, etc...) feature ads. Whether they are one or many they exist. Without it the magazines would cost too much money for anyone to want to read it. With that said I have found a magazine that appeals to the novice to the professional. It gets into more than the rest. If you need to invest in one to find out what you like in photography (Film & Digital), then please subscribe. I'm sure you'll be just as happy as me. What I like it that even I who can learn something new. Take care and thank you for choosing this review!!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars the standard photo magazine
Now it has been a few years since I have had a subscription to the magazine, but I've been recently rereading a bunch of my older issues, and I am reminded again why Shutterbug is the leading photography magazine. Sure there are a lot of ads, more than in any other magazine (but this is a bigger magazine than most of the other photo magazines), but that is to be expected (though I wish they were more like American Photo and put them all together at the end rather than spread them throught the magazine). This is a mostly technical magazine with tips and product reports. It's pretty much a must for the photographer at all levels of skill. Read a few issues and you'll see why it is generally considered the best in its field. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars best general photo trade mag out there
Photo District News is the best general photography trade magazine currently being published. I like how they feature the work of up and coming photographers as well as interviewing key players in the advertising and design communities. It gives a wide view of the industry, outside of the usual technical reviews of equipment, which I find refreshing. The staff hasn't changed much over the years so I do wonder how fresh of a perspective the Sr. Staff has of the industry - but they have added some new columns to the magazine recently which gives me hope that the editorial team is not getting stale. 5-0 out of 5 stars pcphoto
A great magazine for digital camera users from beginner to expert. Has great tips and information.

4-0 out of 5 stars Pleasantly surprised
I got a subscription to this magazine as a gift and at first glance, thought it was going to be nothing but lightweight glossy fluff mainly meant to push new products. To be fair, there are plenty of lightweight reviews of new products in each issue, but there are also a surprising number of very useful, practical how-to articles-- mainly geared to novice or intermediate digital photographers (like me!).Yes, I've purchased big thick books on Photoshop before, but somehow, I never gotten to far in actually reading those books (maybe too much info for a hobbiest who doesn't need/won't use 1/2 the features in the product?).I recently switched from using Photoshop to using Photoshop Elements, and this magazine seems to be a nice compliment to that software package. In recent issues, I've learned when and how to effectively use RAW vs JPG, how to take better advantage of graduated ND filters, how to use Levels correctly, etc.The contributing editors are all top-rate as are the photographs and examples.I highly recommend anyone with a new digital SLR and/or new PC image software such as PS Elements, to get this magazine. It's well worth the subscription!

3-0 out of 5 stars Sigh..........................
This use to be a swell magazine for the amateur digital photographer. However, for some reason, this year it has gone more "pro"...which means such things as much more talk of Photoshop; more reviews of really expensive cameras and equipment the amateur would never consider buying; and more ads, ads, ads.Even the price has gone up.Last year, I paid $11.97 using an enclosed subscription card in a magazine. This year the cards show $14.97 for a year's subscription. And I received a renewal letter today from the publisher saying I could have a year for $16.97!Gee, thanks. But no thanks.I'm not interested in a "pro" type of photo magazine. There's already enough of them anyway.

2-0 out of 5 stars Disappointing
As a practicing photographer and not a collector, I've been very disappointed with B&W on the few occasions it's crossed my desk (I've never had a subscription, so I'm basing this on just the few issues I've seen).
5-0 out of 5 stars B&W Best photo Magazine
This is by far the best photo magazine I have seen in my 40 years of being a photographer.(and I subscribe to half a dozen).
5-0 out of 5 stars nice
This past summer I picked up two issues of this magazine and they sat on my shelf for a few months before I finally got around to reading them. I was impressed. The quality of this magazine is higher than any other photographic magazine I've seen. The image quality, the paper, all top notch. This is a fine arts magazine and doesn't (at least from what I saw) spend time with articles about the technical side of the art. Rather, it focuses on individual artists and shows samples of their work. There are more great photographs in here than in any other photo magazine I've read. I intend on subscribing. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars It's Come to This: What Does it Matter Anymore?
American Cinematographer can work for you or against you.I started a five year relationship that has recently ended. At the time about to attend film school, I needed all the help I could get to always be one-step ahead of everyone else.
5-0 out of 5 stars An absolute must for any serious filmmaker
Whether you are a technical guru or someone who's emphasis is on the words, any serious filmmaker who takes his or her craft seriously will love American Cinematographer. The official magazine of the American Society of Cinematographers, this magazine gives you in depth interviews with DPs and Directors on the technical approach towards the shooting of the picture. They cover not just lab soups and lighting techniques, but also the approach to the script, design notes on how to visually approach the script - in other words, a great detailed overview of how this particular crew of filmmakers went about creating the visual language of the film. And not just film - as technology advances, and more films are shot on video, this magazine gives the same great coverage to those pictures as well - from Star Wars to Anniversary Party. While it's true that there are only so many films that AC can cover each issue but I think you'll end up feeling like I do - that I wish they could cover them all! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars NYC life at its best!
I absolutely love this magazine! BlackBook has the latest on everything culture, art and fashion related. The GetLit page is the first place I look when I'm trying to find somewhere new and trendy to go.I recommend this mag to all of my friends, and they love it as much as I do!The BlackList is jam-packed with all the best places to go.I will never miss an issue!

5-0 out of 5 stars One of the best magazines out there for mod culture
Perhaps it is because my view is very NYC-centric but I find this magazine to be a great means of keeping abreast in the progressive culture scene despite my uptown address. The photography is fantastic. Working in headline fashion, this magazine is a great resource for up and coming designers and new things to keep watching. Before something is classifiable as "hip" anywhere else, its here.

3-0 out of 5 stars Cool to look at, but when it comes to reading...
... I don't know.I guess my major complaint is that, if you aren't already privy to the latest in fashion, music, etc (like the other reviewer said, and he's quite right, this is a very hip magazine), then you'll probably feel pretty lowbrow. They don't really try to familiarize you with what's cool like GQ or DETAILS does; you're either in or you're not. However, it's definitely better than FLAUNT, which seems to be trying to imitate BLACK BOOK, in that the photography isn't as pretentious and the articles have a little more substance.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars great mag
This is a magazine. This is a magazine?Do yourself a favor and pick this up if you can get it for less than $20 an issue (like I do at my local Borders).Excellent quality.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great Mag
Not Only Black + White is a great Australian magazine, and of top quality.I used to buy it in bookstores here in New Zealand, but they don't seem to be available here anymore.I am not subscribing to it, but I'd keep getting them if they were available in bookshops where I live.I emailed the publisher twice about this, but I didn't get any response.Aside from that, this is a great mag (yes, it has fine art nude pictorials as well as lots more) and one that you would hang on to like a "coffee table" book rather than treat like a typical magazine. It has a thicker cover and pages than normal magazines too.For a magazine, you could almost rate it a 5, but nothing beats a proper book (no advertising, etc), so I rate this a 4.Aside from the photography, it also makes a good reference for page layout and typographical ideas as well, for anyone into desktop publishing. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Froma All I've Read
Although I have yet to subscribe to Aperture, what I've heard and what little I've seen advertised in one of Sally Mann's famous publications is enough to arouse my interest, and I can't wait to partake of a first issue of 'Aperture'.Feedback from other members is always anticipated and welcomed.

4-0 out of 5 stars Worth the subscription
Aperture is indeed the preeminent art photography magazine, and consistently has enough good material to warrant a subscription independent of its clout.Although ostensively devoted to art photography, many of the spreads are essentially photojournalism.
1-0 out of 5 stars Pretentious and Plodding
