Review of THE ECONOMIST
This is the most accurate geo-political and socio-economic English-language news-weekly there is. Period. Articles are succinct, top-notch, and cover everything from the world today to business, economics to the environment. I do think the magazine tends to focus a bit too little on the environment and religion, but that is my perception. Despite the editorial style and very sophisticated diction, articles are still easy to understand. True, this magazine (or newspaper, as it calls itself) is staunchly pro-democracy (i.e. broadly speaking, anti-Russian policy, anti-Chinese policy in their respective conflicts, say, over Georgia or Taiwan, and pro-war on the Iraq issue), pro-free trade, and pro-European (i.e. for the expansion of the EU). But it takes many conservative and liberatarian positions, too, and oftentimes even liberal ones, which, overall, makes the magazine fairly objective - you'll usually get all or most of the points-of-view after reading just a few articles on the same subject, although the Economist usually does imply, or sometimes downright state, which position it takes or the world must take. Actually that's the best part: it is very refreshing to have a magazine that is not afraid to share its opinion and offer its advice to readers, hence its influence. This, for me, is the icing on the cake.

This is how Larry Ellison, CEO of Oracle, described his impression of the magazine. Although a little overhyped, I could'nt put it more succintly. It makes you think and makes you laugh. Read it!

Diverse, Compact, And Fair.
This is not solely a magazine for financial news. Writers from various points of view give the reader a great depth of research in their reporting. Precise coverage on current events, science, law, medicine, economics, politics, and technological news that you will not find anywhere else. Best Business Weekly
Oftentimes business and econ professors will recommend that there students read the WSJ everyday.That is a terribly waste of time as the Journal is far too longwinded to be of value to busy executives.Businessweek actually provides very quick and incredibly easy-to-read pieces that give you what you absolutely need to know to get a good intuitive feel for trends and news in the business world.
Shipping Delay
I know the shipping is supposed to take 4 - 6 weeks but it has been nearly 10 weeks and i dont even have one issue in my mail box... they said they mixed up the address though i keep getting other stuff i order perfectly fine to my address. The magazine service should work a lil better. The magazine is a good one but the one star was for the poor service.

Cost is only one of many factors.
Some product reviews (particularly food) in Consumer Reports are out of wack with reality; e.g., how many people purchase mayonaise based solely upon cost per ounce?Taste and nutrition facts, I believe are more important - although they receive no consideration.

The virtues and defects of impartiality
Consumer Reports and its parent organization, Consumers Union, can seem a bit schizophrenic at times, which isn't surprising when you consider their mission. On the one hand, their role is to interpose some rationality between the urge to acquire and the products that are marketed to us with every possible appeal. They propose to do this by supplying quality information. On the other hand, they must be neutral, which means they can't editorialize about how stupid and irrational your motives may be, and they can't say anything negative about a consumer economy that is built on exploiting those motives. Thus, if a product makes a false health claim, they may go after it, but if you want to buy a carbon dioxide spewing SUV, then their fondest hope is to help you buy the best big, dumb SUV available. Fair enough: spare me that. I understand the rules of the game. But it does embody a contradiction: lies and tactics on one side of a certain line are ok; on the other, not.

A Must Have Resource
What is wonderful about this magazine is that in just a few hours you get an in depth analysis of a changing focus topic.As I write this, I am staring at the July/Aug double issue-- on SALES.But it might be leadership, management-- whatever it is, its info that keeps me thinking for days without reading several books and a lot of fluff.The articles are direct to the point and the variety of authors and their views give you a lot to think about.This is a must have on that restless plane ride or any other occasion you want headlines and in depth thought provoking broad based coverage.

Not Cutting Edge
This is my third year as a subscriber - sometimes I wonder what I have missed before that. HBR is not about being the first to print the latest management trends or techniques. The majority of the articles involve a ton load of research spanning years and in some cases decades. The research covers numerous companies so that there is a justifiable amount of truth to what is being written. It would be tomfoolery to adopt these techniques and assume that they will automatically apply to your company or department without some sort of additional or complimentary technique. However HBR covers many of the different management styles with practical examples. Then occasionally they revisit an article that they printed eons ago, giving you a fresh insight on how accurate or even inaccurate they were in their research. Each month there is a fictional Case Study that tries to mimic the real world. At the end of each Case Study authorities in the case study field give their professional views on what should be done. Occasionally these fictional studies do reflect your own corporate trials and tribulations. There is the `HBR at Large' section and `Best Practice' covers real world practices and their thoughts on them. HBR will teach you a lot. You should know that you probably wouldn't read every article every month. You're looking at 125-175 pages per month and about 100+ pages of content per month - fine print!. Why Buy: Quite possibly the most impressive magazine to have on your desk when anyone steps into your office. It's inevitable, almost everything involves money and business - HBR greatly improves your odds with the business part. a common touch and a devoted fan base
Kiplinger's Personal Finance is a worthy challenge to Money Magazine for a monthly dose of economic and investing trends, helpful financial tips, and - in KPF's case - a kind of populist advocacy for the little guy investor.
Wealth of information
Received the first issue 3 weeks after placing the subscribtion order with amazon, so that was faster than promised.
Best personal financial magazine
I have read several financial magazine: Money, Forbes, Business Week, Fortune, Smart Money, and Kiplinger's Personal Finance Magazine. I must say that of all these magazines, Kiplinger and Smart Money are the two most useful magazines in terms of personal finance. Of this two, Kiplinger is the better one. I find that most finance magazine provide very narrow opinions on investment and finance planning. The writers of Kiplinger, however, provide very diversified opinions on investment and finance planning. For $1 per issue you can't go wrong
I have been a Smart Money subscriber for over three years. I must say that each month I look forward to receiving the new issue. It needs to be said (to those who aren't aware) that this is a publication of the Wall Street Journal. There isn't as much market news but the writing is just as good. From undervalued stock picks, to mutual fund screening and research, finding cheap bottles of good wine, car ratings, retirement planning and portfolio health - this magazine hits on many important topics for people in their working years. I find the writing to be accurate and insightful. I would still be a subscriber if the subscription was $3 per issue. That's the true value I find in it. Two months after ordering the magazine I have yet to receive a single issue.

Not a fan of Forbes, anymore
I subscribed to Forbes magazine for a year or two, and in general the content is good, but I cancelled my subscription for 3 reasons. (A) 33% of the pages are ALL advertisements - what a waste of space, (B) every magazine has 3 or 4 renewal postcards that fall out onto the floor as I read the magazine, and (B) the classifieds in the back are "not of interest" to any real business person. If you don't mind the ads and the fluff, then this magazine might be right for you! It's not for me. I give it 2 stars. ... Read more

Better than the WSJ
Unlike the WSJ which panders to a broad readership, the FT caters to the most sophisticated swath of the business community, and this gives it free rein to analyze issues at an advanced level. In particular, the FT's coverage of macroeconomic issues, such as the US current account deficit and China's role in the world economy, is rich in technical detail.

This newspaper is good for economics and business reporting but is painfully biased in its world reporting. Cant recommend, go with WSJ

The WSJ of Europe
What the Wall Street Journal is the the US, the Financial Times is to Europe- a collection of unbiased news, financial information and analysis, and darned good social and cultural reporting, too. It's what the New York Times purports to be- a journal for the informed, educated reader. Excellent repoting, fascinating features and a different outlook than you'll find in domestic papers. capitalism's numbers
On any list of pure English-language business reportage, BARRON'S would figure in the top ten. This newspaper-style weekly compiles more numbers than just about any other publication.
Has lost cache, but there's still no substitute
Veteran Barron's readers (I'm going on 12 years) will tell you that the magazine/paper has deteriorated into the equivalent of an eccentric, pessimistic, stubborn old man who fancies himself wiser than the rest of the world.It is easily the most skeptical mainstream business/investing publication out there, which makes for reading that is entertaining at times and frustrating at other times.That tone is pervasive throughout, from the Alan Abelson's opening editorial to the technology-oriented "Plugged In" column.But this publication has its strong points, which is the reason I continue to subscribe: Detailed investment news and review

Great value
Entrepreneur magazine is an easy read that allows us working professionals to have access to fresh ideas and interesting articles.I consider it a bargain given the amount and quality of information I receive for about a buck. There are a lot of ads and subscription offers to deal with, but that seems to be the case with most media. I do not consider this a substitute for reading books on business. It is a good complement however.

Entrepreneur magazine is one of my favorite business publications and it's the type of magazine I can count on for up- to- date information on business startups and for possible resolutions of common problems to the small business owner. A monthly publication, this magazine is designed to appeal to those who are presently owners of a small enterprise or who aspire to open their own business in the near future.
Excellent magazine for those who want to start a first business
I have read this magazine on and off for a several years and wanted to add my 2 cents.Yes, the magazine does have many ads for business opportunities.But this is exactly something I want to read and evaluate, the marketplace of business opportunities.Many of these are franchise opportunities, which is exactly where the first time entrepreneur should start.The articles are generally well written and many will obviously be useful, but not all.The value of each article often depends on where you are in the business creation process.It was not until I read the E-Myth Revisited that I understood the value of these franchises.This magazine slices and dices the franchises by many metrics to help you find one where you are most likely to both succeed and be happy.The magazine is easily worth more than the price to any person seriously starting or building a small enterprise.Hope this has been helpful to the entrepreneurs out there. ... A Terrific Newspaper with a Global Perspective
I am a big fan of British publications such as the Economist and Financial Times because they tend to offer a more balanced and global perspective of the news.
A Global Perspective
With its over 150 years of experience, the Financial Times is one of the greatest newspapers in the world.Recently rated as the most reliable news source by a survey of journalists, politicians, and other authorities, there are few newspapers that can match its breadth of coverage or depth of analysis.Although it is much lighter than the New York Times or the Wall Street Journal, what it does contain is worth its weight in gold.Besides, who can remember everything in the newspaper anyway?

Written by morons. Useful only by taking them in reverse.
I have yet to see a PW review of anything that was not vetted by the PC Police, not to mention utterly stupid. When they want to pan a book, they apparently have a list of criticisms they pick from at random, such as "non sequitur" or "murky argument" or "reductionist". They pick them by throwing darts at the list and writing down whatever phrases the darts hit, in ways that prove that they don't actually have any understanding of what the terms mean. It's especially annoying because even when it's a book I like, I can easily see criticisms that someone with a different worldview could make that would be valid, but they don't make them; that would require work.
Great if you're in the business but
For those in publishing, this is a terrific resource for keeping track of who's doing what.The book reviews often lead me to books I wouldn't have found any other way and their articles are pretty interesting if you want to publish or be published.However, that said, the price is nuts for an individual and I would strongly suggest reading it at your library.If they don't carry it, you can request that they do.

Five stars for those in the book trade, one for most others

Good left leaning muckraking magazine
I lean left politically and was looking for a magizine to inform and get me thinking. I tried several others, including The Nation, and settled on and subscribed to Mother Jones. While the magazine leans left, it does so in a more informed and intellectually honest way, as opposed to a rah rah banner waving way. It mixes in a bit more social commentary and investigation as opposed to political propoganda and endless articles on how to defeat the Republicans. If you're interested in a solid investigative, left leaning magazine, check out Mother Jones. Check out their web site, they have some free content and additional content that is available if you get the magazine.

Not afraid to tackle the controversal issues!
This magazine confronts the most controversial and usually most important issues of our time.No mindless dribble through diversionary news (who won American Idol) in here, just the news that needs to be discussed. The issues corporate war mongers want to keep American's deaf to.

INDISPENSIBLE
The stock columns of this newspaper provide essential data in picking out the growth (small- to mid-cap) companies in which your investment will be maximized. I owe the greatest part of my SEP to this source.
Reactionary paper
It's tough to read a paper and trust its business insights when the editorial page is written by such shallow, simple minded, right wing ideologues. There is interesting reporting on new and upcoming businesses, and they suggest an interesting approach to investing, but the value of their advice is severly compromised by the obvious extreme right wing pandering in evidence on the front page news and the editorial section.
Damaged by reactionary op-ed, hard-sell for other product
A great tool for stock selection, but the newspaper is heavily tarnished by its op-ed page, which is to the right of Ghengis Kahn. It's also gutless, since nowhere will you find a masthead with the names of the people responsible for the poorly-written and often left-baiting copy that passes as their editorial comment.

Still have not received this magazine.
I ordered HOW for a graphic designer friend's birthday in January and it is near the end of March and she still has not received anything...
The business of design... not design of design.
This would be a great magazine for someone who either owns thier own design business, a pro freelancer or an art director who is high up on the food chain in an agency. Not very good for an entry-level design student such as myself. This magazine is first and foremost about the business of graphic design: how to promote your business, attract and retain clients, how to deal with a team of designers.
It maybe designers-must-have... but

Great Photography
Different people buy this for different reasons. I buy it for the great photography that actually ends up in client's hands. Really good stuff. Even though it is international, much of it is generic and the text is English. Nice large format, printed very well, with line cuts near the binding reminding you that you can cut the pages out and use them for reference. Good for the professional and the hobbyist. Pick up a copy and consider a subscription. Good stuff.

Quick update on the marketing world
Advertising Age gives you a birds-eye view of what's happening in the world of advertising and marketing. A good amount of news, trends, and other information is packed into dozens of small blurbs, sidebars, and page-long articles. While I enjoy the content, I have two complaints. The physical format is in-between a newspaper and magazine meaning it is printed on glossy paper and staple bound on the left edge, but it is large and floppy. The other annoying feature is the number of articles that start on the first few pages but are continued somewhere in the back. ... Read more
