3-0 out of 5 stars Current Codes Stay, Older Codes Go
One of my favorite past times happens to be the world of video games. Although many people find different ways to get around them with cheats, the unfortunaet part is that the cheats don't often get used. For a magazine called Tips & Tricks, their magazine constantly is coined with that phrase. Although they have a dead on sense with publishing tips and ways to help you through current games, that isn't the same with older games for the system in their codes section. The magazine constantly changes by reducing the contents of codes for certain games and older systems like the Nintendo Gamecube, the Playstation 1, and the Nintendo 64. Althoough it is good for current and upcoming systems like the Nintendo DS, and the upcoming Wii, many will just have to find other ways to get their cheats than Tips & Tricks magazine.
3-0 out of 5 stars Tricky
As a reader since '97, and a subscriber since '02, this magazine has helped me various times in my hobby of gaming. The magazine offers FAQs and a large collection of codes/cheats for most of the popular consoles and handhelds (there are usually at least three different FAQs). The magazine also offers different departments, reporting on various segments of gaming. Game Previews features upcoming select games along with a release chart; Gaming Gear keeps up with new hardware peripherals and accessories; Online Gamer has news on said subject; Gaming 2 go is for mobile phone games; Sports Desk offers details on the newest sports games; Japan Report shows the goodies the Japanese game players get with their gaming (letting us know how we get shafted if we don't import); Final Fantasy World contains all news on Final Fantasy games; and Collector's Closet lists rare games, music, peripherals, and systems you should look out for if your a collector, or if you own them. Phew! Collector's Closet also has a monthly "Room of Doom" showing some incredible collections (for the geek in all of us). There are also some current departments like Grand Theft Auto: The San Andreas Chronicles, Mega Mania (for Mega Man stuff), and Halo Insider. Those departments are like Final Fantasy World in having some in-depth information on the games, but the Halo and Grand Theft Auto reports are said to be going away soon. There is also some coverage on Video game movies, comics, toys, and some reporting on anime. Quite a bit of stuff for simply "Tips & Tricks." Each department isn't very long, maybe a couple of pages, but are a nice read. Of course the main reason for the magazine's existence are the FAQs. These "strategy guides," though, can be very hit and miss. Many of the recent games featured are action games that could be easily beaten, and many of the FAQs aren't really in-depth enough. If a game has a lot of collectibles, you can pretty much be left without how to find them all. I also recall one time they made a guide for Madden--really ridiculous and a waste of space. This kind of treatment is sort of like Prima or Brady making guides that don't really need to be made, and are a waste of paper. The mag used to have a card you could fill out to tell them what games you would want featured, but now, I dunno who picks the games--as I said, it's very hit and miss. One month a certain FAQ could be a great help in Trauma Center: Under the Knife for the DS, another it could be a waste for King Kong (mulit-platform), or other licensed ware (Fantastic 4 comes to mind). I guess it is diverse in both niche and mainstream games, but I wish the magazine was more...well...just had more. Also, as of writing this, I have yet to see anything on Dragon Quest VIII, Tales of Legendia, or Grandia III since they were released (Role Playing Games, and even Strategy Role Playing Games need to be featured more in this magazine). Oh, but if you need some "strategy" for Full Auto, 24: The Game, and Teen Titans, you'll flip for joy. Also bothersome is the mail section. Quite possibly the worst collection of letters I've ever seen are assembled for response. The input and ramblings of the readers are even worse than in EGM--and that's bad. There is no age limit, so expect a very young crowd to be given an equal voice. Tips & Tricks dosen't even take e-mail for reader responses; only snail mail is used for letters. Of course, another knock may be why buy this kind of magazine if you can get free FAQs and codes online. Well, a defense for that is sometimes the FAQs come out before that spotty gamer can finish his/hers. Also, the ubundance of codes/cheats from one place of reference can be more convienient than hurried online scavaging. This is especially the case in a great giant "Code Book" that is released every year. The great issue contains not only codes/cheats for current gen systems, but occasionally past ones as well. This magazine's basically a crap shoot; some months are great for FAQs, some are worthless. If you have a wide range of tastes in games and in gaming systems, and don't want to keep paying a lot of cash for strategy guides, then I guess this magazine is worth a try. Everyone else should glance at the magazine stand every now and then to see if it's their month for content, and worth the price of purchase. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Serious MS developers need this
People building serious MS apps, the kind where you have to figure out just what "volatile" really means, must subscribe. This is the map to the world they live in. There are lots of ads, covering just about every add-in, add-on, API, component, and service you can imagine, plus some. Do you need to know the difference between clusters, multiprocessor board, multicore, hardware multithreading, and application multithreading? You need this. UI, I18N, .NET, COM compatibility - sooner or later, it's all here.
5-0 out of 5 stars Required Reading for any MS Developer
Great magazine. Covers the full range of .NET technologies. Every issue is packed with windows, web, and xml development articles plus industry news and a lot more. High recomended.

4-0 out of 5 stars Laptop and mobile solution news but light on independent, indepth research
From a subscription point of view (about $12/yr directly) this magazie is a decent value. While half the information is fluff (looking back - 15 years of innovation, etc.) there is some timely relevant information hard to find easily in a consolidated way.The focus is not just on laptops but mobile solutions - this includes peripherals, PDAs, mobile phones among others. There is some opinion (RIAA vs Sirius) but the focus seems to be vendor/advertiser driven.
4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Source of Mobile Product Information
Laptop Magazine is an excellent resource for the mobile professional. The staff has done a great job of reviewing products relevant to those individuals attached to their laptops and related gadgets. Despite the name, the magazine is not merely about laptops but also the tools and strategies for the peripatetic white-collar worker.
4-0 out of 5 stars Good enough
And while this magazine doesn't go into great depth on to which products are the best (you could call it indirect advertising), it does one important job.It introduces you to the newest products and what's out there.Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Used to Be Best for Developers
This used to be my favorite magazine for software development (yes, above Dr Dobbs, ACM, etc., etc.). However, it has be combined with other mags and still is only half the volume it used to be. I will probably let mine lapse this year (8th year?) unless things improve. It is not promising. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Not much value add
The problem with Computer Shopper is, it's neither a serious trade magazine like PC Mag, or a shopper's paradise like its former self was.If you want hardware tips, Maximum PC is way better. You can find pretty much everything in Computer Shopper for free on the web ...

5-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic resource for PC builders.
A few weeks ago, I started building my first PC from scratch and have found Computer Shopper magazine the best resource. The reviews and articles really helped me decide what parts to use, and the recent "how to" guide on assembling a PC was a godsend. I don't think there's another magazine out there that provides such in-depth advice -- their writers really know what they're talking about!Plus, if I can't find what I'm looking for in the magazine itself, Computer Shopper's Web Buyer directs me to the sites where I can find what I need -- both technical help and the cheapest parts. I can't thank them enough for saving me all that time I would have spent surfing the Internet myself. I'd definitely recommend that anyone interested in customizing their own PC should sign up for Computer Shopper.

4-0 out of 5 stars GOOD READ, VERY USEFUL
I have been reading Computer Shopper since it helped me buy my first home computer three years ago. I usually save the previous 12 issues for reference. Product guides are very useful and I use the articles to help me upgrade my computer or solve nagging problems that I can't fix. I also use the Web Buyer section to discover new sites. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent magazine on the inner workings of Windows
This is *the* magazine dedicated to advanced topics on the Windows NT series (NT, 2000 and XP).As the most popular and one of the best operating systems, Windows NT series is incredibly complicated, and this magazine, issue after issue as well as on its cluttered website, gives you lots of detailed information.A lot of the contributors are respected programmers who really know Windows internals. You also get the "inside" view of Microsoft managers and developers from time to time. This is just one incredible resource for expert Windows uers.(After all, even an expert still has a lot to learn.)

5-0 out of 5 stars A "Must Have" for anyone in affiliate marketing
This is a fantastic magazine, that covers all aspects of affiliate marketing. The articles are helpful and truly worth reading. 5-0 out of 5 stars An incredible resource --
-- but I'm not quite sure who it's for. It's just so cool, though, that probably doesn't matter. This month's issue has projects that use FPGAs, that generate RF test signals, that do encryption on PIC processors, and, well, lots of other stuff. It's all at that place where analog circuitry, digital design, and software become interchangeable, like that software tone detector people would have implemented as an analog filter back when.
5-0 out of 5 stars Straddles the line between "hobbyist" and "professional"
Circuit Cellar occupies a unique place in the world of electronics literature. Its scope (embedded systems) is a little too limited and the articles a little too advanced and discipline-specific to serve most of the dwindling hobby community. On the other hand, the magazine carries an enthusiasm and a sense of fun that's rarely seen in professional magazines.
5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent information about embedded systems
I've been reading this magazine off and on since Electronics Now and Popular Electronics went down hill, and have been pleasantly suprised by the depth and quality of information provided. Design and implementation of topical projects are laid out and explained clearly along with the underlying theory. Don Lancaster always has an interesting spin on new products and ideas. If you're looking for insights into embedded systems development, look no further. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A Must Have for PHP Developers
Simply the best magazine of its kind. Contains a varied bunch of in-depth, well written articles each and every month.
5-0 out of 5 stars The must have resource for PHP developers
I used to buy php|architect in their PDF format, but have switched to the print edition since they started publishing it. This magazine has *a lot* more information than any PHP website I've seen. The articles are very long and incredibly in-depth--and they publish articles on topics that in many cases I haven't seen covered anywhere else. Yes, the magazine is a bit expensive, but it also has very little in the way of advertisements--and it focus exclusively on PHP, which can't be said of any other magazine out there. I doubt that the guy above even reads this mag... I say go for it, because if you're serious about PHP, it's definitely worth it!

3-0 out of 5 stars why a journal?
For the full time PHP programmer, this is a nice journal to keep an eye on. It gives you an idea of recent interesting developments that involve coding in PHP.
