5-0 out of 5 stars A1 Publication - One of the Best out There
As a music professional I have subscriptions to numerous magazines, Everything from Guitar One to Recording Magazine. Therfore I was reluctant to spend more money on another magazine until I received one those cards for a "free issue" in the mail. Man was I glad to get that. EM is one of the best magazines in the industry and it covers just about every aspect. Interviews with the industries top producers, 10 or more reviews per issue. May's article on "Affordable Solutions for Studio Acoustics" was worth the yearly subscription by itself. So don't wait like I did, its no telling what you might miss.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good info, recording, gear reviews, articles, and ads
I'll keep this short. hehe. The mag corners a market where no other mag goes. This is a nuts and bolts making a living at electronic music (all forms), kind of mag. You won't find artist reviews or anything like that here (just references to who uses what sometimes). If you are a beginner looking for info, or a pro who is keeping up with latest gear, software, etc., then get this mag. I've had it now for a couple of years and it's jampacked with articles, gear reviews, buying guides, etc. etc. etc. There are ads but they are kept to about 10%-15% usually. Some of the ads are very insightful into new products. Topics range from drum machines, synths, PCs, software (both commercial and freeware!), anything that relates to the Electronic Musician. And if that weren't enough EM goes the extra mile teaching us how to properly record mics, make a mix, anything related to the studio process. I also recommend Keyboard Magazine if you are a synth or electric piano player. I highly recommend Electronic Musician to anyone with an interest in Electronica (EBM, Industrial, Techno, Soundscapes) and/or High-Tech Professional or Home Studio recording. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars The best and the worst- elite intellectual politically and morally flawed journal
The 'New York Review of Books' continues to supply articles andessays of the highest intellectual distinction , along with articles and essays of the lowest possible political and moral quality. This is in part because its editors have followed an extreme leftist neo- Trotskyian political agenda. This is the publication which more than any other gave prominence to the treasonous American bashing views of Noam Chomsky. It is the publication which for over three decades has provided distorted one-sided coverage of the Middle East conflict. It is a journal whose editorial political line has by and large served the very anti- democratic anti- Liberal forces which would , should they come to power, cancel out its own existence.
5-0 out of 5 stars Among the very best...
NYRB and the Atlantic Monthly are among my favorite subscriptions; In terms of sheer intellectual depth and range, it is very tough to beat the NYRB.While I do not read the NYRB cover to cover, I end up spending at least 5 hrs on each issue.
5-0 out of 5 stars Highly Readable
THE NEW YORK REVIEW OF BOOKS is published 20 times a year, biweekly except in January, July, August and September. It is a respected publication which is devoted mostly to reviews of current books and an occasional movie. It also contains articles of social or political interest. The Letters section is usually brief with little waste.

5-0 out of 5 stars The "Write" Stuff!
This review refers to "Writer's Digest" Magazine Subscription...
5-0 out of 5 stars a great magazine
I don't subscribe to many writing magazines, but Writer's Digest is one I subscribe to. It's packed full of useful information for the novelist, short story writer, poet, or freelancer.
5-0 out of 5 stars A Quick Review of a Key Writing Tool
I call Writer's Digest a writing tool because for years many writers have relied upon the information given within the pages of this thin monthly magazine. As soon as I began writing I started buying this magazine and reading it with a highlighter close at hand. It provides information for all corners of the writing industry, whether it's from starting a story to selling an article to doing the taxes at the end of the year; everything here is geared toward making a writer's life just a bit easier (and for those of you who are attempting this as career, you know just how important something like this could be). To add to that, there are a lot of inspirational articles and sections that can give a young writer the push needed to get writing. So, to anyone interested in writing of any form (fiction or non-fiction) then this should be your first step into the field (followed by some education, of course). Writer's Digest to me is almost as important as my Word Processor or dictionary.

5-0 out of 5 stars Finally!
I always enjoyed going grocery shopping with my mom -- while she shopped, I hung out in the magazine section reading Mad, Cracked, and FANGORIA.Now, 25 years later -- I finally got my own subscription -- and unlike retro video games, nostalgic 80's cd's, and Members Only jackets, this is just as good as I remember.
3-0 out of 5 stars The internet will do them in
One of my greatest childhood memories involving horror movies concerns Fangoria magazine. You would think the recollection would have something to do with watching "Friday the 13th" or "Halloween" for the first time, and I do have those memories to keep me warm at night, but my first vivid impression of the shocking power of horror films hit me at the tender age of ten or eleven when I stumbled into the local drugstore and picked up a copy of this magazine. I don't remember what the cover looked like--surely it was one of the grotesque images Fangoria routinely plasters on the front cover that initially caught my eye--but I do recall thumbing through the magazine rather quickly in case the nosy cashier decided a youth of my tender years shouldn't look through such a gruesome publication. Immediately before I sat the magazine back on the rack, my eyes settled on a nauseating color photograph of one of those "axe in the head" effects so common in slasher films of the era. I suspect this still came from footage eventually excised from the theatrical cut, however, because it was far worse than what we usually see. I almost lost my lunch on the spot. Even today, I wish I knew which movie that scene came from.
4-0 out of 5 stars OVER 20 YEARS AND STILL GOING STRONG
You've got to take your hat off to Fangoria.Whether their style of gory, visceral coverage of the horror genre appeals to you or not you can't deny their success. The fact that they've been doing it for 20 years is really a marvel in the world of magazines, let alone genre magazines.

5-0 out of 5 stars An Excellent Resource For Writers
"The Writer" is the premier magazine for writers of all varieties. Kalmbach is known for publishing a great series of specialty periodicals, and this one is extremely well written and edited, as is appropriate for the subject matter.
5-0 out of 5 stars The best writing mag
The Writer is one of my favorite mags, and I look forward to seeing it in my mailbox. It's packed with "how to" articles on fiction writing and poetry. There are also interviews, book reviews, and stuff on literary journals.
5-0 out of 5 stars The Best Magazine for Writers
I've been a freelance writer since 1996, and every month I look forward to reading the next issue of The Writer. It's a magazine that shows you how to write better, how to get published, and how to stay inspired. The interviews with top writers are great, and I love the reviews of books about writing. The hour or so I spend reading each issue is among the best time I ever spend. If you're a writer, you should subscribe immediately. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Spin baby spin
I've been to a lot of concerts, met a lot of bands, seen a lot of hype, seen a lot of scandal. This magazine is pretty much the best source of any up-and-coming band that you may be hearing on the radio or seeing on MTV.
1-0 out of 5 stars Spin Magazine
Give me a break, people! All Spin Magazine is a cheap rip-off/wanna-be of Alternative Press.I've looked at like maybe ten OR less issues of this waste of printed material in the past as many years.Think I may've saved ONE of those issues.Sometimes,I'll find an issue left by an uninterested patron at the post office that's been left behind.I'll then take it home, then likely toss it out after I've looked through it twice.Avoid at all costs!

3-0 out of 5 stars Decent overview
Ok - This is not pitchforkmedia.com - the online music review who's more concerned with prose rather than the actual reviewing of music BUT nevertheless the greatest source out there to new music. This ain't Rolling Stone neither, who'd have a better place in the Rock 'n Roll Hall of Fame rather than the newstand, as it doesn't mean anything anymore to contemporary music fans. This is the guy stuck in the middle, between the one who does not want the intellectual crap of the one, neither the commercial junk from the other. Hence, a 3-star for ideal pulp, just what you want if you have 10 minutes to spend on the toilet! But then again, this is a daily occupation... ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars One of the best...
This is simply one of the best movie magazines on the market. You can always be sure to be updated on the latest movies and dvd releases, and it's nice that the crew of Empire doesn't take themselves too seriously; the articles are well written but keeps the humour intact as well, where other movie magazines seem to be too keen on showing how intellectual they are. Unfortunately it's rather expensive here in Denmark, but it's worth the price.

5-0 out of 5 stars TOP MOVIE MAGAZINE - HANDS DOWN
No question. If you followed ALL movie magazines, even the sci-fi and fantasy spin-offs, quick VHS magazines (remember those!) then you should also remember about the time BATMAN premiered (what great movie hype!) Empire Magazine ran its first issue and then the great BATMAN #2 issue and we have not stopped collecting since, nearing issue 200 now as I write this, it has been a good one so far and I am sure will keep up the same pace for all new to the greatest `non-digital' monthly pages on the planet, I urge young and old alike to start collecting and reading now.
5-0 out of 5 stars The greatest movie mag on the planet!
I am a loyal, long time fan of EMPIRE magazine and have collected almost every issue from No.1. Being a British mag, it differentiates itself from others like Premiere and Entertainment Weekly by it's frank dissection of all movies, and provides a wide range of opinion and discussion. I will always read EMPIRE, and If you like movies, you should too. ... Read more

I've done high end audio and video (home theater) for 20+ years and am technically proficient, audiophile, and a good sense of making things work and 'value'.
5-0 out of 5 stars One of the better home theater mags out
I have a subscription to this, Stereophile and The Perfect Vision. I would definately say I prefer Home Theater mag to the other 2. In this magazine it definately has something for everyone, full equipment reviews to DVD reviews. I definately enjoy reading this magazine. I would also have to say it is quite flexible for different budgets for different people.

5-0 out of 5 stars Got to get it
If you are into poker this is the best magazine out there. It's one of those magazines you can pick up over and over again because it is full of outstanding articles by some of the leading poker pros. All of their writers (of which there are regulars and then guest writers) have an obvious passion for the game, which translates into very well written and useful articles about the game. You'll also get to read interviews with some of the most influential poker people out there.
5-0 out of 5 stars Worth the Money but Best When Free.
I sometimes read this when I go to a cardroom where they have free copies to take with you and I enjoy it everytime. The interviews are excellent and they usually have big name players writing articles which increases its "street cred," if you will. I love the website and followed its WSOP blog meticulously over the summer so I could keep up with the action and root for Greg Raymer from a distance. Also, I took advantage of the free email address they offer which is handy on top of being pretty cool. Cardplayer is the next best thing to reading a seriousbook.

5-0 out of 5 stars It's a great magazine, but go online if you want to save money.
It's great.I love it.But as everyone will tell you, ALL the articles are free online. So, why pay for the magazine?I do because I like to read it while watching TV or on a flight.I like to see the advertisements for all the upcoming tournaments. It's easier to have everything in hand rather than printing articles off the Internet. But if you want to save money, go online. All the articles are free.I'm not sure why.Seems like a lousy business plan. But they're all there for you to read if you don't want to pay for the magazine. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Too light
Utne takes on all the right issues, but doesn't deliver the kind of indepth reporting to make it matter. Most articles are short and too tidy.An interview with Alan Ball (creator of Six Feet Under) is a perfect example.Several times in the article you think "hey, they're going to get into something interesting," but each time the interviewer changes the subject before that can happen.Another article with great potential: ten green urban projects.Unfortunately, each project gets a palty 4 lines . . . and there are no links to other sources for follow up.There is great potential at Utne, but it needs to be developed.

5-0 out of 5 stars 5 PLUS 5**********
It always seems like a holiday when my UTNE arrives. It has never failed to delight me in my long tenure as a subscriber and fan.
5-0 out of 5 stars Addendum to the other reviews on the first page
Hello, this will be the third time in the last many years that I've received, and read, UR on a regular basis.I agree with most of the other reviews. However, what I find most outstanding about the magazine is how uplifting, and ultimately positive, it is.I subcribe to several dozen web sites, from the media from around the world, most of which are far left of "liberal."While I take everything that I receive, through all forms of media, with a very large "grain of salt," I do tend to put much more stock in what I read on the web than I do in what the mainstream media feeds us, especially that from the U.S.Therefore, as a result of that reading, I often feel sorrow, rage, cynicism, and/or depression.Utne's positive spin on issues, even when the subject is inherently distressful, inspires me, as almost no other form of media does (except, sometimes, music), to rise up out of any negativity that I may be indulging in, and take positive steps toward helping to make our world a better place for us all.For that, I am very grateful to everyone who is responsible for such a fine magazine.Thank you, Utne. ... 2-0 out of 5 stars ok, but won't help you be a better drummer
I'd like to think that reading MD in my younger years had even a little positive effect, but for impressionable youngsters, this mag is not going to help you be a better player. And it peddles a lot of jive images that have nothing to do with what playing music is about.
5-0 out of 5 stars a must have for all drummers
I can't see any reason why drummers don't read Moderndrummer magazine. I've been subcribing Moderndrummer for years and I always enjoy reading them, comparing to other drum related mag, the interviews and critiques are very informative and inspiring, i learnt a lot about product knowledge and maintainence, drummers and bands, and not to mention technique thru out the years of subscrbing MD, the whole magazine is well organized by easy and comfortable to read lay-out and meaningful content, instead some of the so called drumming magazine which interview drummers about their day life and what they think about that specific cities, Moderndrummer really concentrate on how to help their reader to be a better drummer in general.
5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Mix
There aren't many magazines for drummers that you run across at your average newstand (usually only two or three). This is the best all-around one to get. Good interviews, good reviews, good advertising. Not much on the local scene, but I can live with that. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars A poor quality publication
I had to wait for 5 five months till I got my first issue, imagine that! When the issue did arrive, I found it was very poor. I think that the publishers of Ellery Queen just don't understand that you have to provide value for the price they are charging. 5-0 out of 5 stars Enjoyable and reliable mystery tales
Ellery Queen's Mystery Magazine (EQMM) is the sharper image of its sister publication, Alfred Hitchcock's (AHMM).The stories are more polished, some have literary aspirations, and I'm more likely to find the well-executed twist in an EQMM story. While not every piece is a textbook mystery (some are police procedurals or psychological thrillers), all are good entertainment.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars el primero, y el mejor
Vanidades is without a doubt the best Spanish language magazine for women, with a wide range of subject matter, good quality paper, and excellent photography.5-0 out of 5 stars La revista para la mujer de hoy
... 3-0 out of 5 stars Is there such a thing as a non- left wing book-reviewer?
I may be wrong, but whenever I have seen political pieces in the 'London Review' they have tended to the extreme Left. The 'party line' approach makes it difficult to enjoy the other fare.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Best Literary Journal in the world
The London Review of Books is, without a doubt the best literary journal in the world: at the same time erudite, entertaining and informative, each issue is a foray into a world of knowledge that is all too lacking in other publications and media. There was a time in my life when I couldn't afford to put my heating on in the bitterly cold British winter, but I never thought to cancel my subscription to the LROB. Highly recommended.

5-0 out of 5 stars best literary review in the world today
The London Review of Books is simply the best generalist journal on topics of literature, the arts, culture, history, politics, philosophy published in the world today--it now beats the NY Review of Books in terms of giving you the full picture and leaves the TLS back in the dust.If you want to get your bearings in the world ofculture and politics, this is must reading.
