a glossy take on wine for the amateur and the expert
The Wine Spectator is one of those magazines designed to reassure you that you're rich or that you soon could be, all in the context of a shared love for the fruit of the vine.
Very educational
I subscribed to WS for a couple years in the late 90s, and loved the magazine. It keeps a balance between reviews of wines both new (which is the main emphasis) and older vintages, and background stories on vintners and so on. The writers are almost all very good (and I'm a professional writer myself) -- only one of them do I dislike and he doesn't review the wines. Both the wine connoisseur and the novice can profit from reading this publication. I only dropped the subscription because I moved and the collection, no issue of which I wished to discard, was occupying more and more space on my bookshelves.

A Little too High End for Me
First of all, I have to note that this magazine is beautiful. The articles and food photography are off the charts. But for a college student like me, I felt the magazine left me feeling a bit of an "outsider" ... if you're well off and fancy the finer things in life, then this magazine is right up your ally. But if you're just an everyday, ordinary girl like me who loves food and cooking, fast and easy, and healthy, then Cooking Light may be a better choice.

A friend of mine used to subscribe to Bon Appetit and flipping through the magazine I found so many interesting recipes.

good luck actually getting the magazine
i wouldn't know if this was a good magazine, i have yet to receive it, after waiting three months.it is cheaper to order through food and wine website anyway.

Shallow, Pretentious, Trendy
The editor's gratingly smug and breezy monthly letter sets the pace for this vapid Lifestyle magazine, which you'll enjoy only if you're like her -- rich, creepily entitled, self-absorbed, and interested merely in the accoutrements of opulent dining, but not really food or actual cooking itself.

Thorough Descriptions of Growers, Winemakers and Wines
After reading a neighbor's Wine Advocate while catsitting, I decided to subscribe (to the electronic version eRobertParker).What I like about the reviews is actually not the numerical ratings, or even Parker's adjectives, but his incredibly detailed notes on the grape blends involved, vineyards, producers and winemaking. For example, here's a review of one of my favorite wines taken from the April 2004 Wine Advocate, which is fairly typical of a Parker review:
The best publication in its class, but not perfect
Of the two major wine magazines, Wine Spectator and Wine Advocate, I have to say that Wine Advocate is my preferred source for finding a truly exceptional wine to enjoy. Wine Advocate is primarily the work of the noted wine critic Robert Parker, who is sometimes accused of being one of the leading "wine snobs" in the industry. Although Parker does use some pretentious lingo and some obscure references in his tasting notes, I find his tasting descriptions generally more accurate than those of the critics of Wine Spectator. Sure, he dislikes Burgundy, but at least now he has hired a more than competent fellow critic (Pierre Rovani) to cover that region for him.
An Invaluable Source of Wine Information
Parker is the leading consumer analyst for the wine industry.Anyone serious about wine should subscribe to the Wine Advocate.However, I'd be doing an injustice as a reviewer if I didn't mention that you can purchase it online via Parker's eRobertParker website for only $60/year. ... Read more

Affordable & adequate --- better as an introductory source than anything else
As the other reviewers have observed, this is definitely not a magazine for the serious collector, if for no other reason than the quantity of wines being reviewed is relatively small, and without good comparison to other vintages among other things.The articles are nice enough, but without much depth.Most aspects of this magazine would tend appeal more to the neophyte, which is fair enough.It helps that it is relatively inexpensive.
Okay for the price, but could use some improvements
Wine Enthusiast is an average, decently priced, magazine about, of all things, wine. Less of a lifestyle magazine than Wine Spectator, and less serious in tone than Wine Advocate, Wine Enthusiast has its merit in that it focuses solidly on wine without the pretentious rambling that sometimes diminishes its competitors. Most of its articles are mostly accurate, if in a rudimentary way. Wine Enthusiast does not seem to rate as many wines as its competitors, which can be a problem for vertical comparisons of certain wines, including some well-known examples from Bordeaux and Burgundy. As such, I would probably not recommend Wine Enthusiast to the serious collector. Nonetheless, for its price, Wine Enthusiast offers value and adequate ratings and reviews of many wines, although I have some questions as to how they choose which wines to rate when they leave out many Sauternes in favor of white zinfandels.

Good value but not top-level
Wine Enthusiast magazine is a second-class (but not third-class) cousin to Wine Spectator magazine. Based on my reading experience with the magazine over the last year, it offers fewer articles and fewer tasting reviews. The quality of the editorial/opinions is close to comparable, though. This magazine can be a reasonable choice to read and, since it does cost just a bit less than Wine Spectator, it can offer reasonable value. ... Read more

Wine Maker Wonderful
This is indeed a wonderful resource for all winemakers. Good source of home winemaking tips
This magazine is a really good source of winemaking tips for the home winemaker. Throughout the year, this magazine provides a very solid set of articles that cover a wide variety of topics. The articles are written at a level appropriate for the non-chemistry major in college who is interested in making wine. Every edition of the magazine seems to include at least one article by a commercial winemaker -- and there seem to be additional brief tips often contributed by other winemakers as well.Read more

Superb Resource
A couple of years ago I attended a "pot luck" wine tasting party at which most guests brought wines ranging from $15-$25 per bottle.It was enjoyable and educational to compare and contrast that characteristics of the various lovely wines.But as I presented my entry, it drew special attention because of the bright magenta price tag on it with large numbers emblazened across it - $5.95.

A Sip in Time
A friend introduced me to this fun magazine.Without being ponderous, it has more useful and accessible information than I've seen in one food or wine journal in a long time.I've learned practical things like not to buy the econony sized vermouth, 'cause it won't keep well once opened, or the best sparkling ciders, what wine to bring as a dinner party gift, and why Guinness tastes better in Ireland. It has great virtual trips - like to Thailand, Oaxaco, and Jamaica woven around the theme of the liquid pleasures produced in each country - everything from tea to rum, or chocolate. I find it humanizes the products from all over the world that I take for granted - while giving me imaginative ways to serve them. When CNN starts to drown me with bad news, this snappy mag is as refreshing as Thai iced tea or a tall Vermouth cassis. ... Read more
