3-0 out of 5 stars Current Codes Stay, Older Codes Go
One of my favorite past times happens to be the world of video games. Although many people find different ways to get around them with cheats, the unfortunaet part is that the cheats don't often get used. For a magazine called Tips & Tricks, their magazine constantly is coined with that phrase. Although they have a dead on sense with publishing tips and ways to help you through current games, that isn't the same with older games for the system in their codes section. The magazine constantly changes by reducing the contents of codes for certain games and older systems like the Nintendo Gamecube, the Playstation 1, and the Nintendo 64. Althoough it is good for current and upcoming systems like the Nintendo DS, and the upcoming Wii, many will just have to find other ways to get their cheats than Tips & Tricks magazine.
3-0 out of 5 stars Tricky
As a reader since '97, and a subscriber since '02, this magazine has helped me various times in my hobby of gaming. The magazine offers FAQs and a large collection of codes/cheats for most of the popular consoles and handhelds (there are usually at least three different FAQs). The magazine also offers different departments, reporting on various segments of gaming. Game Previews features upcoming select games along with a release chart; Gaming Gear keeps up with new hardware peripherals and accessories; Online Gamer has news on said subject; Gaming 2 go is for mobile phone games; Sports Desk offers details on the newest sports games; Japan Report shows the goodies the Japanese game players get with their gaming (letting us know how we get shafted if we don't import); Final Fantasy World contains all news on Final Fantasy games; and Collector's Closet lists rare games, music, peripherals, and systems you should look out for if your a collector, or if you own them. Phew! Collector's Closet also has a monthly "Room of Doom" showing some incredible collections (for the geek in all of us). There are also some current departments like Grand Theft Auto: The San Andreas Chronicles, Mega Mania (for Mega Man stuff), and Halo Insider. Those departments are like Final Fantasy World in having some in-depth information on the games, but the Halo and Grand Theft Auto reports are said to be going away soon. There is also some coverage on Video game movies, comics, toys, and some reporting on anime. Quite a bit of stuff for simply "Tips & Tricks." Each department isn't very long, maybe a couple of pages, but are a nice read. Of course the main reason for the magazine's existence are the FAQs. These "strategy guides," though, can be very hit and miss. Many of the recent games featured are action games that could be easily beaten, and many of the FAQs aren't really in-depth enough. If a game has a lot of collectibles, you can pretty much be left without how to find them all. I also recall one time they made a guide for Madden--really ridiculous and a waste of space. This kind of treatment is sort of like Prima or Brady making guides that don't really need to be made, and are a waste of paper. The mag used to have a card you could fill out to tell them what games you would want featured, but now, I dunno who picks the games--as I said, it's very hit and miss. One month a certain FAQ could be a great help in Trauma Center: Under the Knife for the DS, another it could be a waste for King Kong (mulit-platform), or other licensed ware (Fantastic 4 comes to mind). I guess it is diverse in both niche and mainstream games, but I wish the magazine was more...well...just had more. Also, as of writing this, I have yet to see anything on Dragon Quest VIII, Tales of Legendia, or Grandia III since they were released (Role Playing Games, and even Strategy Role Playing Games need to be featured more in this magazine). Oh, but if you need some "strategy" for Full Auto, 24: The Game, and Teen Titans, you'll flip for joy. Also bothersome is the mail section. Quite possibly the worst collection of letters I've ever seen are assembled for response. The input and ramblings of the readers are even worse than in EGM--and that's bad. There is no age limit, so expect a very young crowd to be given an equal voice. Tips & Tricks dosen't even take e-mail for reader responses; only snail mail is used for letters. Of course, another knock may be why buy this kind of magazine if you can get free FAQs and codes online. Well, a defense for that is sometimes the FAQs come out before that spotty gamer can finish his/hers. Also, the ubundance of codes/cheats from one place of reference can be more convienient than hurried online scavaging. This is especially the case in a great giant "Code Book" that is released every year. The great issue contains not only codes/cheats for current gen systems, but occasionally past ones as well. This magazine's basically a crap shoot; some months are great for FAQs, some are worthless. If you have a wide range of tastes in games and in gaming systems, and don't want to keep paying a lot of cash for strategy guides, then I guess this magazine is worth a try. Everyone else should glance at the magazine stand every now and then to see if it's their month for content, and worth the price of purchase. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Info you can't find other places
I agree with "Pigeons" review. This was not as expensive for me as I got a "bundled" package of CoinValues, CoinWorld, both 1 year subscriptions (12 issues, 52 issues respectively). And with CoinWorlds weekly paper you are kept VERY up-to-date on goings on in the numismatic community.I got the both for around $41.

5-0 out of 5 stars A regular in-depth look at the coin world and all of its trappings!
I picked up a couple of issues of this newspaper/magazine at the Santa Clara show and on the basis of those two numbers decided to subscribe.I already subscribe to Numismatic News (NN) which I have also rated at 5 stars and I think I'll continue with both publications because they seem to vary just enough from each other to make things interesting.Coin World appears to spend more time on the nuts and bolts of the Coin World (well, duh, I guess the title says it), with good listings and mentions of new numismatic publications; reference books being essential building blocks for the erection of an edifice of numismatic knowledge. Its articles about specific numismatic issues also include a lot of the minutiae about the decision making process, problems and solutions, leading up to the final issuance of any given coin.It also has really excellent, detailed articles on esoteric topics not readily available in other publications. For instance, contained in one of my complimentary copies there was a truly fascinating article on Alaska Trade Tokens, as well as an entertaining one about the cascade of silver dollars created at the Philadelpia Mint when one of the employees charged with raking loose dollars together from atop a pile weighing hundreds of tons inadvertently broke open a bag which set off a chan reaction of burst open bags causing other employees to flee before the avalanche of tumbling silver.A further good thing about this publication is that the classifieds section appears to be qualitatively, if not quantitatively better than that found in NN.What this publication does not have is recent US Mint statistics (although lots of articles on new mint issues, etc.) which is a really nice thing about NN.Anyway, at about twice the price of NN, I'm not sure that you are getting a publication that is twice as good but I do believe that it is worth the cost of subscription and I hate to say it but if you have to choose between either this one or NN, go with this, in my opinion. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars A mag you can trust
PSM is the only mag i know to ever admit they underrated ICO. I quite agree with their ratings which seem to escape most of the commercial influences. The whole package doesn't glitter but it is very effective. It takes me hours to read it unlike some other mags that won't keep me busy fore more than a bus stop interval.

3-0 out of 5 stars You still get what you pay for...
Having been a subscriber to this mag since Fall of '97 (around issue #2 or #3, I believe), I can say the new look the magazine offers is the best since then. With a more adult feel, much of the corny humor has been toned down, and the magazine actually looks more professional than ever. Gone, for instance, is the ridiculous swimsuit issue, which had often badly drawn video game "women" in stupid situations. Starting with issue 111 (June 2006), the magazine has offered better and longer spreads on upcoming games, and a more in-depth review for its Game of the Month. I really wish, though, that the PlayStation games and the PSP games were better spread out, perhaps seperated, and not mixed with each other. The overall feel of the Magazine, though, has grown up and really doesn't need to be a guilty pleasure anymore. However, with all the good the magazine has to offer, some of what has made the magazine not so good has remained. Fanboyism can still rear its ugly head, and their pro PlayStation lovin' can lead to some not so investigative reporting. While they can be abrasive to the PSP, at times, many other instances reveal some bias for Sony, like when they repeated Sony's garbage about why the PS3 controller won't have rumble feedback: because it would interfere with the motion sensor technology. So, why does Wii's controller work? No mention about Immersion vs Sony. None. It's kinda sad and hilarious that a teen gamer on a message board can connect the dots more than supposed game "journalists." And what about the comment from Kazou "Kaz" Hirai (Prez of SCEA)? He stated: "I wish they [Microsoft] would come up with some strategies of thier own, but they seem to be going down the path of everything we do." Yeah, because Sony is so original (I won't even go into "Entitlements"). In the issue before, PSM acknowledged Sony's copying (they used "mugged") of Nintendo's Wii controller, but here no follow up? Curveball questions and reporting if ever there was. Almost as bad as EGM.And while the Game of the Month review can be larger (the staff's Final Fantasy XII review [October 2006, issue 115] was 14 pages long!), the result is passed to the other reviews; a page can be crammed with up to four reviews a page. I should say four paragraphs per pages, as that's what the reviews end up being. When they talk and report about games, PSM really tends to do thier best work, such as their interviews with Hideo Kojima and the spreads regarding Metal Gear. I guess that's why I can recomend the mag at its current price. 12 bucks is nothing (the price is partly why I stuck with the mag for this long). Check it out for yourself, but just remember that PSM is Playstation "family" only--brand specific. Keep that in mind when reading the "independent" praising of Sony by its fans.

5-0 out of 5 stars Hail to the king of playstation magazines
Alrightly. Folks it doesn't get any better than this. This magazine blends humor with serious reviewing. They will give the strong points and bad while keeping it real to the hardcore player elite - like me! Anyhow, I've read this magazine for a while and I've never been disappointed. The "Ask the 800 lbs. Gorilla" section is a riot. The Bottomline gamer this is an unbiased, not corporatly owned (like OPM, and XBOX magazine) and a pleasing magazine to read. Anyone "hooked" on gaming and looking for great recommendations on must have games should pick up a PSM and get a subscription. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars A better marine aquarium magazine doesn't exist.....literally
While originally and currently published in Germany as Koralle magazine, Coral the English version, stands as the only magazine exclusive to the marine aquarium hobby currently being offered here in the U.S. With that said Coral is a great magazine that I would encourage novice, advanced, and expert marine hobbyist alike in enjoying and securing as the exclusive premiere marine aquarium magazine.

5-0 out of 5 stars Error in July Puzzle book
I believe there is an error in the answer for puzzle #43 in the July 2005 puzzle book. The logic given for the Cont. Congress print does not match clue #4.I believe the dates given for the Cont. Congress and for Paul Revere should be reversed. (C.C. should be 1868 and P.R. 1856)Other than that, I am having a ball with the puzzles, and it keeps my gray matter from atrophying!

5-0 out of 5 stars timing is everything
I ordered this on May 5th for Mother's Day, and was advised that the actual subscription may take 6-8 weeks, but that a card would be mailed to my Mother within 3 days.It was not mailed until June 27th, she still does not believe I was thinking of her on Mother's Day.As of June 30, she still has not received her first magazine either.Allow extra time when ordering if it is for a timely item.

4-0 out of 5 stars Fun to do as a team with the whole family!
The puzzles in this book are my absolute favorite kind of logic game!It can be a mind-bending experience to follow the logical deduction of some of the better ones.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Nice magazine
I bet all of you out there can find in your basement or addict old sports memorabilla from when you were a kid, or from some day when you went out with your friends or family.5-0 out of 5 stars The Best Of The Best
Here it is. The best magazine for keeping up on what's hot and what's not, in sports memorabilia. While most dealers and collectors look to Beckett for values, the same look to Sports Collectors Digest (SCD for short), for deals on cards and other memorabilia, and to find out what the current trends are. No matter the sport, if there's memorabilia for it, SCD has probably covered it and one time or another. It's very informative in the history and production of baseball and other sportscards. It's also informative and entertaining. The one thing I really love about SCD is their Customer Service Award program. If you go to SCD, and you see a dealer with the Krause Publications Award emblem, you can count on that dealer for service. This is a publication that anyone can enjoy and benefit from. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars A good all around choice
As a library administrator I get to see and read an awful lot of woodworking books and magazines.I have been a personal subscriber to Woodworker's Journal for a year now, and an off and on reader of the magazine for about 5 years. In that time I have grown to appreciate this as a very good woodworking magazine. Is it my favorite? No, but I still like it well enough to recommend it to others.I also regularly read Fine Woodworking, Workbench, Wood, Popular Woodworking, etc. and like all of those, this magazine has its strengths.I find that WJ is very into power tools, tool reviews (theirs are among my favorites), and shop projects.Having said all of that, I also must confess that the best piece of furniture I ever built came from a plan in WJ magazine (an arts & crafts style wine storage table), so don't pigeon-hole it too much.
5-0 out of 5 stars Just the Right Approach
There are two good ways to tell what audience at which a woodworking magazine is aimed. The first is the type of advertising, and the second is how much skill do the projects expect you to have.It is pretty clear right away that Woodworker's journal server home woodworkers who are already of moderate skill. The advertised 'big toys' run in the 500 to 1500 dollar range, although there are a couple of high end combination machines in the adds as well.
5-0 out of 5 stars A balanced approach to woodworking - tools, techniques, proj
Woodworkers Journal has attracted some of my favorite woodworking experts from the other magazines. Michael Dresdner, Ellis Wallentine, Shondor Nagaslaski are all great tool and woodworking experts and give me the information that I need to advance my skills and keep working in the shop interesting. I can hardly wait for the next issue to arrive. It will have shop tips, jigs, finishing tips and projects. No other magazine has this well rounded approach to woodworking. ... Read more

An excellent 'every-man' (or woman) mag about the fine art of homebrewing.I've been a homebrewer for over 20 years and have seen a lot of stuff come and go, yet I still get good ideas out of each issue (and not just recipes, although the Szamatulski's contributions are usually good).Typically, in the area of gadgets.Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Modern knitting mag
Creative Knitting is relatively new to the knitting market, a welcome addition. While I haven't subscribed yet, I pick up copies at the newstand and have generally found the quality of the patterns, styles, and articles to be pretty good. The directions for the garments that I've made have been accurate and error free. Except for things like bikinis (who at any agewould wear a hand-knitted bikini?) and slacks (?!), most of the designs are modern and adaptable. With 20 or more projects in each issue, CK is a bargain. Hope these editors and designers keep up the good work. ... Read more
