5-0 out of 5 stars Do you like learning?
I've actually met people who have said, "I'm too old to learn new things." And younger folk who have said, "That's too much like being in class." If you're one of these people, don't bother with Mental Floss magazine, or with going to school any more, or for that matter, with continuing to be alive in the first place. Living is learning, and this magazine helps edify and entertain you while you're doing all that living and learning. Most highly recommended.
5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful,silly trivia!
This is truly one of my favorite magazines! It's been a favorite gift for friends and I know that it is being passed to others so each issue gets multiple readings.Of course, my issues are safely in my home library since some things are too good to share.

5-0 out of 5 stars Longstanding, veritable classic!Incredible articles
What positives can one say about 'National Geographic' magazine that hasn't been said already.'NG' is an American institution that appeals to individuals with a thirst for multi-culturalism, science, and sociology. And the photography is stunning to say the least. It is often said that 'the best education' is to travel far and wide and see how other cultures live and think.Since this isn't practical for many, the next best thing is to read 'National Geographic' magazine! In addition, the fairly recent cover article on 'Evolution' was well written, convincing, and accurate! And to the myopic reviewer below who thinks that the world revolves around her, and who mentioned is not into Soccer, I say this to her:most of the world loves Soccer (technically called Football), and all the NFL, MLB, and NBA fans COMBINED don't even come close to the combined numbers of Soccer fans worldwide!I am a subscriber for life.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great, getting a little 'out there'
I've been a subscriber for over fifteen years, and will probably continue to subscribe until the day I die. But at times I find National Geographic frustrating. I have no interest in Soccer, nor do I want a huge fold-out map discussing the sport. Aren't there more phenomenal things going on in the world today? Also, Geographic does have its pet topics.
5-0 out of 5 stars excellent magazine for lay people
National Geographic Magazine is written primarily for theperson with little or no background in Geography. It is not an intense scholarly magazine and , as a Geograohy professor pointed out, tends to be chatty. But, it does give great information on geopgraphy as well as other fields in the Social Sciences even Natural History. There are many articles about people and places around the world and their customs. There are articles on the latest explorations and discoveries. Such as the rediscovery of the Gnostic Gospel of Judas and the oldest tatooed mummy.Zip USA takes a single US Zip Code and describes the customs and practices of the people living within that zip code. There are many interesting articles about people and places in the United States.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Best Magazine -- period.
I will always subscribe to this fabulous magazine. There is so much variety in each issue.I am amazed at how this magazine always get me interested in things that I have never even thought about before. And the way the articles are written, I feel like I am being entertained while I am being informed -- it's awesome! The mix is not just heavy subjects either -- there are always ighter-weight articles too, so I can pick up this magazine on any occasion when I'm in any mood and I can always find something that I want to read about.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent
This is an excellent magazine. There are very few magazines that I choose to read cover to cover. This is one of the few.
5-0 out of 5 stars Literate, authoritative history in a nutshell.
Smithsonian says it like it was, albeit short and sweet.Without sprinkling complex grammar and cute expressions that are the hallmark of so many publications, Smithsonian provides the latest meaningful scholarship, especially if it departs from traditional concepts.Their photos are always profoundly informative and fresh, without cut and paste from the time-honored sources.Their article on Gavrilo Princip, the assassin of Archduke Francis Ferdinand, shook me to the core. Thanks Smithsonian. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderfully Written, Fun to read
This magazine is GREAT.It covers the things you may know in history, but also tells the 'whole story'.The stories cover from 1492 to Post WWII.This magazine is the only one I have found that tells the full whole history in a easy to read interesting format.I would reccomend it for all Americans who want to know the true interesting history of America and not the shallow 3 minute news driven or HollyWood slanted history.

5-0 out of 5 stars I Look Forward to Every Issue
This is an excellent magazine about American History. The magazine provides a wide range of stories on a bi-monthly basis. It doesn't repeat the same stories that most people know but it tries to tell instances that are not as well-known.In some cases it is little known stories about significant events and other times they have stories about little known pieces of American History.I only wish the magazine had a monthly publication. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars an unvarnished classic
FOREIGN AFFAIRS makes no apology for its antiquated typescript, large print, and generally stodgy appearance. It hardly needs to.
5-0 out of 5 stars Best Journalism in Print Neutrally Covering All Aspects of Foreign Relations
I've been reading Foreign Affairs since 1980 and have always admired the well rounded scope covering everything from Social & Cultural issues, Media/Public Opinion, International law, Human rights, Economics, Trade & Finance, Science & Technology, Intelligence, Energy, resources & environment, International organizations, and the list goes on.
4-0 out of 5 stars Establishment Foreign Policy journal

The only magazine I devour the moment it arrives in the mail.I keep them to re-read favorite articles again and again. In depth analysis and wonderful artwork are in every issue. It is a must have for the serious student of military history and for the amateur historian as well.

5-0 out of 5 stars Long time favorite
I first picked up a copy of this magazine off of a newstand over 20 years ago.In that magazine, I read the most thrilling account of the Battle at Trafalger I believe I have ever read.I was imediately hooked on this magazine and have been ever since. In over 20 years of being a subscriber, I can honestly say I have never yet been dissappointed in an issue.

5-0 out of 5 stars Finest Popular Magazine on Natural History
"Natural History" is the official popular journal published by the American Museum of Natural History, the oldest - and largest - museum of natural history in the Western Hemisphere and without question, one of the world's greatest museums. In its pages it has featured brilliant essays by the likes of Roy Chapman Andrews, Margaret Mead, and Stephen Jay Gould, to name but a few of the many eminent scientists - both museum staff and outsiders - who have contributed superb articles on natural history to this magazine. It has retained an emphasis on scientific discovery, publishing articles pertaining to ecology and other aspects of evolutionary biology (including paleobiology), geology, astrophysics, archaeology and anthropology. Recent issues have included brief articles on biomechanics of various living organisms, those pertaining to recent and current exhibitions such as the Petra exhibition on display at the museum from the Fall of 2003 to early Summer 2004, and current ecological and anthropological research. Current museum scientists, most notably Neil deGrasse Tyson, the director of the Hayden Planetarium, often report in these pages on their ongoing research as well as on issues of a more general nature that might interest a scientifically-literate public. And to its credit, it has not shied away from controversy, publishing for example, an issue on so-called "Intelligent Design", which is seen by its adherents as a competing scientific alternative to evolution via Natural Selection, but lacks any scientific credibility from professional scientists, science educators and like-minded members of the general public.

Into the world of Ancient Egypt, if you are interested in this ancient civilisation, then this is the mag for you. Packed with full colour pics and detailed explanations of the world of the pharaohs, this bi-monthly mag has lept me fascinated since it first appeared 4 years ago.

5-0 out of 5 stars Discover a different world
'Ancient Egypt' takes you into a different world - of pharoahs and mummies and mysterious Gods. I have to confess I wasn't really into all this stuff before but the way in which this magazine conveys the Egyptian mindset is unique and it's not all about the pyramids! 4-0 out of 5 stars Anatol Lieven review
Lieven's article, "In the Mirror of Europe: The Perils of American Nationalism";is succinct, cogent, and in my opinion frighteningly accurate. My experience as a professor convinces me that we are in the midst of a nationalistic arrogance, whipped by endlessly reptetiive mantras including 9/11, war on terrorism and god, which the majority of my students now accept as truth. I have one suggestion, I think Mr. Lieven is overly optimistic when he comments that the neoconservative empire-builders are not yet the majority in positions of power. I feel their reach inlcudes the legislative and executive branch, much of the leadership of coporate America, an increasing number of Jewish and Christian denominations, much of the media-particularly AM talk radio, higher education, the military, and with another four years of the current administration, federal courts at all levels. I will bring up this article in many of my discussion groups. I think the article was well-written and important, my congratulations to the author. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great travel /recreation guide/objective review of people & places in Texas
EXCELLENT IN EVERYTHING...HIGH CLASS ADVERTISING.GREAT JOURNALISM!!

4-0 out of 5 stars I like it, and I'm not Texan
On february 2005 I went to Houston for a week, and I had heard of Texas Monthly, so I picked it up at the airport when I got there. It was a pleasant company during my laundry at the hotel I have to say! Beautifully designed, with interesting and thought-provoking articles. I am glad I got it, so glad I even got me a subscription. Highly recommendable.
4-0 out of 5 stars Getting Better
I agree with some of what all the other reviewers have stated.I, too, am a Texas native who has subscribed for nearly 15 years (and read my father's for 10 years before that) and have seen the mag's quality ebb and flo.As copyKat states, the magazine doesn't seem to know who its target audience is (i.e. upscale, politically savvy, middle-or-the-road, city dweller/suburban, etc.)The political and investigatory writing is still top-notch.This state has a lot of problems and the magazine does not try to simply gloss them over. However, some (ok, many) of the 'fluff' pieces leave me wondering why they were included in the first place. Like ducksquat, I also dislike having to stop an article in mid-paragraph to hunt down the continuation on page 97. Read more

I ordered a subscription in jan and just received my first issue in may after several calls. 5-0 out of 5 stars The kindgom and the glory...
Along with 'British Heritage', the magazine 'Realm' is one of the periodicals I use to keep current both on the current state of Britain's traditional culture as well as the current streams of thought on the history of Britain. Each issue includes articles on the past and the present; it is useful for both residents (to learn more about the isles called home) as well as for tourists, to learn more about what is worthwhile seeing. This magazine will give ideas that go beyond the typical travel suggestion magazine, with a greater discussion of history, as well as the current personalities involved in preserving that history.

5-0 out of 5 stars Walks the edge between popular and learnt
In my opinion, this is the best Geographical magazine around. The images are as good as they come, the articles are amazing. The style is popular enough so that everyone can read them, and they have enough information so that everyone will learn something from them. Every issue has some biographical articles, some on recent expeditions, some on nature, some historical, and plenty of book reviews. In short, this magazine gives you a little bit of everything. What I really like about it is that it does not shy away from contorversial or serious issues. Here we can read about unkown genocides, natural disasters, or climate change. Geographical does dare to take sides in political issues. It is not for someone that is only out for a leisurely read. It is for us who want a leisurly way to keep informed! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Heritage Mag
I have received 2 copies and really enjoy the magazine, the stories very greatly, and are well written, a great mag to sit and enjoy a good cup of tea with.

5-0 out of 5 stars Rule, Britannia!
'British Heritage' has been one of my favourite magazines since my childhood. I learned much of British history, country life, culture, and style from this magazine. Despite the occasional categorisation under Archaeology in some guides and libraries, this magazine is in fact a remarkably broad-based publication that examines various aspects of British life. I think the Queen might be a bit surprised to find a story about how she spends Christmas under the heading 'Archaeology'. 5-0 out of 5 stars Delightful, informative treat
As a long time subscriber, I have found British Heritage to be as creative and interesting a magazine as must exist. Subjects are diverse, the writing intelligent and often great fun, presentation delightful. It covers everything from history (for which it is a goldmine - there are unexpected and fascinating topics in each issue) to wonderful places to visit to ideas for a perfect afternoon tea. 5-0 out of 5 stars not yet received
We have previously viewed this outstanding magazine and decided to purchase it as a gift for our son.We are disappointed that, although we purchased it in February, he will have to wait until May or June to receive his first copy.We hoped that he would receive the winter issue since it was already in publication. We know he will enjoy the publication but it is hard to encourage that excitement when there is nothing available to show him since we could not find an issue to give him, only a note to explain the coming issues.

5-0 out of 5 stars Essential reading
Too many Christians are ignorant of our rich past.We know a lot about the 1st Century and the current times, but everything in between is somewhat blank.Christian History magazine is more than informative; it inspires, challenges and even admonishes in its unique way.I look forward to each issue.I doubt I will ever let this expire.
