4-0 out of 5 stars quotes
I used to subscribe to this pamphlet (and it is a pamphlet, not a magazine) at work several years ago.I just unearthed a copy from 1997 and was surprised to find it's still out there. To give you an idea of what it is:it's roughtly 20+ pages, full of inspiring quotes related to leadership, honesty, work ethic, etc. Some is funny, some is thought-provoking:1-0 out of 5 stars This is not a magazine!
Even though this is advertised as a magazine, it is actually a 24 page pamphlet measuring 4 x 6.5 inches. It contains brief, loosely related, quotations about leadership and human nature from sources that date from ancient times through the present. There are no articles at all.Nothing within the pages was written for this publication. The longest quotations are a couple of paragraphs. Most are one or two lines.Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars The Art of Reviewing Art
I love this magazine!!!As if it isn't hard enough to find anyone out there with a good appreciation of independent film (and by appreciation, I also mean knowledge), but then you have to deal with all these film nerds who think that if it wasn't done on a shoestring budget by a no-name director, it must be bad.Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Wow
Since I discovered this periodical in my campus library, I have loved it and shared the info. I enjoy the articles. I bought a book from one of the authors featured. The other day I nearly laughed out with some of the content and then went on to read a serious article in the same volume. I highly recommend it for peole who thirst for knowledge.

5-0 out of 5 stars Top Quality
The art of short non-fiction writing lives on.I have subscribed to this magazine since 1981, a very different world then, but have been consistently impressed with WQ.This magazine has always demonstrated an excellence in style, content and quality of writing. My favorite is that it has reviews of other magazine articles, something I always look forward to.If controversy or an edge is what you are looking for, this may not be your cup of soup. But if you are looking for a condensed and concise article on a subject you may know nothing about, coming away feeling just a little bit more informed about the world, I can't think of a better source.

2-0 out of 5 stars Organ of the Radical Center
How to characterize this magazine? It's a cross between Reader's Digest and US News and World Report, with a higher Flesch-Kincaid rating. Most of the articles read like popularizations of the output of political science departments (with a bias toward Princeton, of course). In my year's subscription, I found it a little too safe, accommodating, and middling, and I did not renew. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Who wants to live in a world without Superman?
I never really started reading any Superman comics on anything remotely like a consistent basis until John Bryne was given license to "start over."Having been intrigued by various revitalizations of assorted comic books, most notably "Swamp Thing" by Alan Moore, I started picking up the "new" issues of "Superman," "The Adventures of Superman," and "Action Comics."Bryne did a good job of reworking the logic of the character; for example, the planet Kyrpton was already becoming radioactive before it exploded, thereby explaining its various unhealthy affects on the Man of Steel.Bryne also worked out Superman's powers (think walking solar battery) and, perhaps most importantly, made the Superman/Clark Kent/Lois Lane love triangle into a more workable dyad.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Is there a Christian mind?
One of American evangelicalism's sympathetic critics once asked whether there is such a thing as a Christian mind. For all sorts of reasons - some more than justified - questioners, skeptics, and malnourished pilgrims have produced negative responses to the query.
5-0 out of 5 stars Evangelicalism's Renaissance Begins
I had heard of "Books & Culture."I had never read it.And then a good friend from college called one afternoon and told me he was sending me a gift subscription.I've never enjoyed a periodical this much.It has given me hope.
5-0 out of 5 stars Great
One of my favorite magazines and one that deserves wider reading. I love the breadth of coverage ... history, current culture (though pretty much limited to American culture), politics, philosophy, science, film, music, theology and, of course, books! The reviews have gotten me to read quite a few books I otherwise would not have found. I also read First Things and do not agree that its coverage or authorship is broader, but in any case don't limit yourself to one or the other--take a look at both. You can of course access both through their web sites and see what kinds of articles are included in their issues. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Mystery Scene magazine
When the Armchair Detective stopped being published, I was without a good mystery magazine. I received a complimentary copy of Mystery Scene and I subscribed to it. The magazine is published 5 times per year and features great interviews and good book reviews. I especially enjoy their reviewing lesser known authors and books by independent publishers. My favorite part is the "Where Are They Now" which features authors whoseem to have stopped writing a particular series, many of whom I have read in the past. An excellent publication!

5-0 out of 5 stars A must for mystery lovers
Mystery Scene is a feast of fascinating articles, excellent interviews (check out Alexander McCall Smith, in the summer 2003 issue), intelligent reviews, and all kinds of information about the world of mystery writing. In addition, it's that rare magazine of any genre--an absolutely un-put-downable, cover-to-cover read!

5-0 out of 5 stars THE magazine for the mystery genre
This is the ultimate magazine for mystery readers and mystery writers. From front cover to back, it's full of the information you need to know about new books, favorite authors, and what's going on in the mystery business. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars It's cool
I love Looney Tunes. It's very funny and I love the characters especially Daffy Duck. I bought this comic for Christmas and I love it. Unless you are 10 years old, you'll have to buy it. Awesome!

3-0 out of 5 stars It's okay.
You'll get the odd funny story in this comic-book but mostly you'll find yourself yawning and skipping the pages. More than half of them don't even have dialogue to them and reading loads of Bugs Bunny dialogue bubbles just doesn't have the same effect as watching the cartoons.

1-0 out of 5 stars The End of a Good Thing
I had subscribed to the American Scholar for many years for the fine essays. I've let my subscription lapse now that the new editors have dumbed the magazine down. I can't imagine who they're trying to appeal to. The current issue's recourse to Kitty Kelly was the straw that broke the camel's back.

5-0 out of 5 stars New editors, same great magazine
There was much discussion when the American Scholar changed editors in 2004.The first issue under the new leadership, however, continues the tradition of consistenly high quality essay writing.Contrary to what another reviewer suggests, they have not morphed this publication into a current affairs journal. While there are a couple of articles about Iraq, which might not have been there in the past, other articles include:why software doesn't make sense; why Jeremy Bernstein never finished his New Yorker portrait of Jacques Brel; moderns trends in teaching and analyzing literature; and an historical review of inagural addresses. If you like essays on off beat topics, try an issue.

3-0 out of 5 stars BEWARE NEW EDITOR 2005
The first issue under the guidance of its new editorial staff showed what the PBK board must have had in mind. The magazine has adopted now a current-events bent, in place of the more insulated material that many found so appealing before.Photos are now part of the format- not good photos, or color photos, or anything like that, just waste-of-space photos.Oh yeah, in a nutshell, the pen is gone from the cover. The changes bring a once-great journal down to a level of mediocrity that results from trying to compete in a game that is not their own.I will not be renewing. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Founded in 1912
Poetry Magazine from Chicago has been a fixture in the realm of American literature. It's the THE best and the least trendy, slick, topical publication on the market. There are works in all forms in all concerns and modes of expression plus terrific reviews as well as thought provoking essays. For the best deal on subscriptions, try to hold back until holiday time when they offer reduced prices through their website. If you love good literature treat yourself to these higher standards.

3-0 out of 5 stars heres what i think
this mag totally bores me. i mean, i like lyric poetry somewhat but when will POETRY start representing concrete and spatial poetics every now and then?

5-0 out of 5 stars The Best English-Language Poetry Magazine in the World.
Poetry magazine out of Chicago has been around since stew was invented.(When mankind first crawled up out of the swamp and discovered fire, what they had for dinner that night was stew).Well, ok, they're 75 years old and counting. You don't hang around that long unless you're the best.I first discovered them in a college library - many, many years worth of copies - it was a treasure trove of the 1st magnitude. There's invariably one or more poems (if not the majority)in each issue that'll make you glad you subscribed. No, they're not big on pictures (none but the cover - and I remember one year when it was a drawing that didn't change for the whole year...urg) - but it IS the best Poetry Magazine you will ever find. ...
