5-0 out of 5 stars Enjoyable magazine and wonderful resource
I have been subscribing to this book magazine for over 2 years. During that time, I have been exposed to so many wonderful books and authors that I never would have heard of.
5-0 out of 5 stars Forget the bookstore--just read Bookmarks!
This magazine has it all, and you don't have to leave the comfort of your living room! Smart, savvy book reviews...highlights on different genres such as the crime novel or non-fiction books...spotlights on successful book clubs...and outstanding feature articles on classic and modern authors. Everyone from John Steinbeck to John Cheever. Reading Bookmarks makes me want to revisit old books and try new ones; It also turns me on to authors I've never "tried" before. Recently I started reading books by Amoz Oz because of the feature in a recent issue. And I would have never given authors like Jodi Picoult or Kevin Brockmeier a chance had I not read the reviews of their latest. In addition to all the great goods on books, the magazine is one of the best looking mags on the market--great color, fantastic pictures, and an easy-to-read layout.
5-0 out of 5 stars Get your book club organized!
This magazine is a great way to get a book club to focus on what to read next. Basically the magazine is a collection of all sorts of "Best" lists to suit every taste. The "Selections" page starts with a collection of "staff favorites"highlighted with a one-(don't bother)-to-five(rarely given, a timeless classic) star rating system. There's a digest of 27 "best books 2005" lists in a recent issue, a page on the Whitbread awards, a selection of current and upcoming books, reader recommendations, new in paperback, a year in books (e.g., 1981)etc. Coupled with very little advertising, it's great! ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Respectable and important
I have been reading the NY Times Book Review for many many years. There rarely is a week when there is not some review of considerable interest to me. Though I oppose its political bias which is left liberal, I appreciate the solidity, and respectful way in which most reviews are written. There is a sense that for the Times books and culture in general have meaning and importance.

4-0 out of 5 stars Occasional outstanding reviews marred by British chauvinist quirkiness
It seems almost sacriligeous to find fault with the TLS which for many is a kind of book-review Bible. But whencompared to other book- review venues including the NY Times Bookreview and the NY Review of Books, I find it somehow chauvinistically British and narrowly focused. I also must admit to not liking the skimpy look of the journal.

3-0 out of 5 stars The best and the worst- elite intellectual politically and morally flawed journal
The 'New York Review of Books' continues to supply articles andessays of the highest intellectual distinction , along with articles and essays of the lowest possible political and moral quality. This is in part because its editors have followed an extreme leftist neo- Trotskyian political agenda. This is the publication which more than any other gave prominence to the treasonous American bashing views of Noam Chomsky. It is the publication which for over three decades has provided distorted one-sided coverage of the Middle East conflict. It is a journal whose editorial political line has by and large served the very anti- democratic anti- Liberal forces which would , should they come to power, cancel out its own existence.
5-0 out of 5 stars Among the very best...
NYRB and the Atlantic Monthly are among my favorite subscriptions; In terms of sheer intellectual depth and range, it is very tough to beat the NYRB.While I do not read the NYRB cover to cover, I end up spending at least 5 hrs on each issue.
5-0 out of 5 stars Highly Readable
THE NEW YORK REVIEW OF BOOKS is published 20 times a year, biweekly except in January, July, August and September. It is a respected publication which is devoted mostly to reviews of current books and an occasional movie. It also contains articles of social or political interest. The Letters section is usually brief with little waste.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Magazine - Great Vocabulary Builder
I got the book first and then subscribed to this magazine in March. I agree with the other reviewed - GET THE CD version. The Audio CD is great for listening without the text to help you understand the spoken language as I think thats the hardest part. This is such a great magazine for learning Spanish, building vocabulary and keeping up with the language. I highly recommend this product to all Spanish students.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fabulous language learning magazine!
I am a Spanish teacher and I use this magazine with my students. It is a fabulous magazine for all levels and all ages. It is hands down one of the best language learning supplements on the market. I recommend it to anyone looking to improve their Spanish. If you have a means to practice speaking the magazine only will benefit you. If you are not able to regularly speak or listen to the language you will certainly need the CD.
2-0 out of 5 stars Better than nothing but lots of errors, lousy delivery service
This magazine and CD combo will help you improve your Spanish reading and listening skills - with some big "buts."BUT you will find that the translated words and phrases often aren't the ones you actually need help with.BUT sometimes the translation tells you nothing (ex: in an articla about a soccer tournament, the word "quadrilateral" was translated "quadrilateral" - it referred somehow to the tournament format but who knows how?).BUT there are numerous grammatical errors in the English and surprisingly frequent typos in the Spanish, which even I can spot.BUT each issue is rather short.BUT I've only been able to receive one issue on time - the first one - every one since I've had to email and report the issue not arrived and they have had to send a replacement from the office.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Magaine
I absolutely love this magazine! This is a wonderful read for any who like short stories and mysteries! The magazine includes new writers as well as more well known ones. A wonderful magazine!

1-0 out of 5 stars A poor quality publication
I had to wait for 5 five months till I got my first issue, imagine that! When the issue did arrive, I found it was very poor. I think that the publishers of Ellery Queen just don't understand that you have to provide value for the price they are charging. 5-0 out of 5 stars Enjoyable and reliable mystery tales
Ellery Queen's Mystery Magazine (EQMM) is the sharper image of its sister publication, Alfred Hitchcock's (AHMM).The stories are more polished, some have literary aspirations, and I'm more likely to find the well-executed twist in an EQMM story. While not every piece is a textbook mystery (some are police procedurals or psychological thrillers), all are good entertainment.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Top notch generator of chills
CEMETERY DANCE magazine is a World Fantasy Award winning magazine of horror, published bi-monthly, featuring short stories of horror and dark suspense, interviews with outstanding talent, and reviews galore. There is no shortage of opinions where products are concerned, with somewhere around forty-five reviews in every issue, including articles by writers Bev Vincent, Michael Marano, Thomas F. Monteleone, Paula Guran, Steve Vernon, John Pelan, Hank Wagner, the list goes on and on. Robert Morrish is the editor, Mindy Jarusek the managing editor.
5-0 out of 5 stars Scary, haunting stuff....
Each issue piles on the terror. Don't read this late at night! What I truly enjoy is the variety of stories. It's not just for horror fans, folks. Some of these tales are suspenseful and others just leave you sitting there thinking, "What the f*%K? That did not just happen!"
5-0 out of 5 stars You don't know what you are missing!
Since the early 80's I have been a fan of Cemetery Dance magazine. It comes every other month full of short stories by popular and up and coming horror authors. The magazine also contains great movie and book reviews, advertising, and author interviews. I encourage any horror fan to check out their website...the staff there is very friendly and helpful. On those hot summer days, it is a super mag to delve into and forget about the weather!!!! Enjoy ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Some of the best science fiction shorts out there
Regular readers of my reviews are probably getting sick of me mentioning Kage Baker, but I have to credit her for getting me to try a lot of things that I wouldn't normally try if she hadn't been a part of them.Asimov's Science Fiction magazine is another time where this is the case. While I have boughtFantasy & Science Fiction magazine every month for a while now, I would also check Asimov's to see if it had a Baker story. If it did, I would buy it.What I have found, however, is that I have enjoyed most of the other stories in the issues I have bought as well. Thus, from now on I will be buying it every month too.
5-0 out of 5 stars Possibly the greatest SF magazine in existence.
I would encourage everyone to subscribe, and help support the magazine. Asimov's Science Fiction (along with Fantasy & Science Fiction, and Analog Science Fiction & Fact) is truly the lifeblood of the science fiction genre. Short fiction has the unique advantage of being able to develop new worlds in a shorter amount of space than one might find in a novel, although in many cases a large portion of this world-building is left to the reader's imagination. Thus, good short fiction is able to convey a true sense of transaction between writer and reader, giving the impression that more has been said than has actually been specifically stated.5-0 out of 5 stars Amazing!
This magazine is simply the best SF out there! Every issue goes well over 100 pages and it's a monthly! The June Issue has some great storys in it, so go pick it up at your local convience store, now! This magazine is awesome! ... Read more

Their Web site sells a year subscription for $45. I find that Amazon, or whoever their affiliate is, repeatedly sells magazine subscritions for more than the actual magazine itself.

3-0 out of 5 stars Pretension, thy name is Believer.
Yep, pretension is the name of game here. Although it's not really pretension - its a kind of uber-pretense, a pretension so pretensive in its self-mockery that it somehow doubles back itself and actually becomes almost worthwhile.

5-0 out of 5 stars Indispensable Tool and Inspiration
I've been a P&W subscriber and reader (even when not a subscriber) for years. I've also tried various other writers' magazines, such as The Writer and Writer's Digest. The latter two were fine when I was just beginning to dip into the freelance market, just beginning to look at publishers for first manuscripts, but when I gained more experience, I soon realized those just didn't make the cut anymore. The articles were too often repetitive and geared towards such elementary basics that I was no longer gaining new insights. P&W was the next step up.
3-0 out of 5 stars Focused on interviews/bios/reviews, heavy on ads
Certainly, it depends on what you're looking for- this periodical is thick and comes every two months.I felt that maybe too much of its thickness came from the large number of ads, mainly ads for writing retreats, seminars, or contests.I was interested in those things, but I was more interested in instruction/tips/exercises that would help me learn about writing, and this I felt was in somewhat short supply. So I didn't renew this, and instead subscribe to "The Writer," which comes monthly, includes lots of instruction/tips/exercises, as well as some ads and notices about opportunities for writers, but not as many as this publication."Poets & Writers" does include some good interviews, bios, and reviews, but for my money, I favor "The Writer."

4-0 out of 5 stars Too much focus on poets for me
I only got the first issue, but it seems to be focused more on poets than other writers (hence the name).i dont enjoy poetry but i love writing fiction. They might do well to keep the two separate, especially the contests and events. It's an attractive format and very upscale, high quality literature reviews and advice. The stories are well written and enjoyable, although i think writers digest offers more for fiction writers. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Long Live Analog
I have been a regular subscriber of sci fi mags for just about the past 15 yrs or so.It all began with Omni and when Omni folded, I found a a copy of Science Fiction Age.I had been subscribed to it for about 2 years before it folded.I found a few Omni-like glossy mag twins thereafter, but they all folded as well. Finally, I found the magazine of Fantasy and Science Fiction and Analog and have been consistently subscribed to other for the past 10 yrs. Both of the latter are outstanding 'zines but for me, Analog is the best because it satisfies the craving for hard sci fi and *fact* at the same time. If F&SF & Analog ever have to close up shop then I would hope they would merge because then I'd have my hard sci fi, fact *and* horror/fantasy all in a one stop shop.

5-0 out of 5 stars Hard Science SF
Analog brings a dependable collection of hard-science fiction stories, novellas, and frequently, a serialized novel.Almost all of them are worth reading; I'm having trouble thinking of an Analog story that made me give up before reaching the end. While its sister publication Asimov's tends more to the social-SF or more literary forms, Analog sticks to a formula of hard-SF with some recurring features: one factual science article, one speculative science article, and a short SF humor piece (Probability Zero).Analog also has a lively letters column, where editor Stanley Schmidt or the story authors often reply. And Schmidt's editorials are always a good read.5-0 out of 5 stars Reminiscence
I haven't actually read Analog for about 20 years, but it was my introduction to science fiction very nearly 40 years ago, when I shared a flat (sorry, must use American, an appartment) in New York with one of John W. Campbell's editorial assitants!Since then, the genre has provided education, solace, amusement - and some disdain from others - and I despair at how few really good new English SF writers there seem to be.However, anyone (and I do mean anyone) who tries Analog with an open mind will find it a revelation. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars The Great Tradition Continues
When WEIRD TALES was revived around 1988, I was sorely disappointed in the direction the editorial staff had taken. It was too "progressive" and not enough like the old WT so many of us afficionados knew and loved.Lin Carter had a great thing going for the four paperback issues he came out with under the Zebra imprint in the early 1980's.Unfortunately, he was not allowed to continue. His idea was to keep the FLAVOR of the old WEIRD TALES alive, and he did it very well.

3-0 out of 5 stars Alfred Hitchcock
I've been getting this magazine for a number of years and do enjoy it.

1-0 out of 5 stars Not So Much "Mystery" as "Misery"
During the 1960's, when my sister subscribed to AHMM, the stories mirrored the fantastic television show; the stories were primarily mysterious, creepy, and unique, with lots of murders and the twist endings that made the show so great. Now, the majority of the stories in the magazine are plain, uninteresting "detective" stories.I subscribed up until about the early 1980's, but stopped because of the same old boring "cops and robbers" material.I tried to read a recent copy while waiting for my aunt at the beauty shop, but switched to one of the media rags instead when discovered that AHMM hadn't changed. Subscribe only if you are a fan of pure "police" fiction.

I used to subscribe to this pamphlet (and it is a pamphlet, not a magazine) at work several years ago.I just unearthed a copy from 1997 and was surprised to find it's still out there. To give you an idea of what it is:it's roughtly 20+ pages, full of inspiring quotes related to leadership, honesty, work ethic, etc. Some is funny, some is thought-provoking:1-0 out of 5 stars This is not a magazine!
Even though this is advertised as a magazine, it is actually a 24 page pamphlet measuring 4 x 6.5 inches. It contains brief, loosely related, quotations about leadership and human nature from sources that date from ancient times through the present. There are no articles at all.Nothing within the pages was written for this publication. The longest quotations are a couple of paragraphs. Most are one or two lines.Read more
