5-0 out of 5 stars Finest Popular Magazine on Natural History
"Natural History" is the official popular journal published by the American Museum of Natural History, the oldest - and largest - museum of natural history in the Western Hemisphere and without question, one of the world's greatest museums. In its pages it has featured brilliant essays by the likes of Roy Chapman Andrews, Margaret Mead, and Stephen Jay Gould, to name but a few of the many eminent scientists - both museum staff and outsiders - who have contributed superb articles on natural history to this magazine. It has retained an emphasis on scientific discovery, publishing articles pertaining to ecology and other aspects of evolutionary biology (including paleobiology), geology, astrophysics, archaeology and anthropology. Recent issues have included brief articles on biomechanics of various living organisms, those pertaining to recent and current exhibitions such as the Petra exhibition on display at the museum from the Fall of 2003 to early Summer 2004, and current ecological and anthropological research. Current museum scientists, most notably Neil deGrasse Tyson, the director of the Hayden Planetarium, often report in these pages on their ongoing research as well as on issues of a more general nature that might interest a scientifically-literate public. And to its credit, it has not shied away from controversy, publishing for example, an issue on so-called "Intelligent Design", which is seen by its adherents as a competing scientific alternative to evolution via Natural Selection, but lacks any scientific credibility from professional scientists, science educators and like-minded members of the general public.

5-0 out of 5 stars No Bull, no sissy GQ type workout, no Girly men
Sorry, if you are looking for fitness models, look at mens fitness or the "new" format of Muscle and Fitness "the GQ of Fitness magazines".
5-0 out of 5 stars Straight talk without the politics
I first started reading MD in 2003 while deployed in support of OIF 1 in Kuwait. I have to admit that my reason for choosing it over Flex, was that MD used to have the fitness girl pictorials (damn I wish that they would bring them back!). Anyhow, I also read Flex every month, but the thing that puts MD on top, is that readers get the word directly from the athletes. In the other mags, it seems that the athletes' words get "edited" prior to the issue going to print. If I want to know who won the latest contest and how they got into shape, MD covers it. On the other hand if I want to know what the lifetstyle outside the gym is like for an athlete, MD covers it. From Victor Martinez's time in jail to Dexter Jackson's family sacrifices enroute to becoming a star, to Lee Preist's staight up comments about the Olympia (though he had to make an appology later to the commision), MD covers it all. The thing that I respect the most about MD though, is that it pulls no puncheas in giving the real scoop on steroids. Not lony does the magazine discuss the negatives of using "gear", but it also talks about the positve side of steroid use for some people, along with comments from some athletes who will admit to using at one time or another. You WILL NOT find that in any other fitness magazine. Take all that and combine it with great photography and you got yourself a heck of a fitness magazine!

5-0 out of 5 stars This is a top muscle magazine
I'm subscribed to several bodybuilding magazines, and this one, along with FLEX, are the best magazines that I've found to date. The small writeups in the front parts of the magazine are very informative and there are useful articles instead of junk everywhere like magazines such as MuscleMag. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Curiosities Galore
This magazine is dedicated to the study of unexplained phenonema. Everything from 2 headed ghosts to UFO's.This is not like the National Enquirer which is only vaguely interested in the truth. Everything in the magazine adheres to the highest journalistic principles. It reports what has been reported but never makes claims that can't be substantiated.

This is the one and only magazine I have been subscribing to for 4 years now, I just don't want to miss getting an issue at the bookstore. This magazine always tweaks my intellect and satisfies my curiousity. Also being a British publication you don't have that annoying 'continued on page 88' while reading an article , the article's pages run continously to the start of the next article. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars SORRY THIS IS NO WIRED, DISCOVERY, OR POP SCI
All of the above mentioned magazines have something in common.Great pictures and excitement. Most of the time a magazine is a magazine because it has great graphica AND artivles. This magazine seems to be written for PhD professors at Harvard.Yes it is pretty deep reading.Even this would not be so bad if the articles were exciting. The above listed magazine make science exciting because they don't just report the info, they make you feel like the news is exciting and important to you.THis magazine just reports the info.Blah blah blah.I could get this info this dry in a scientific journal. At least there I know it is going to be boring. Here I think I am getting a great exciting science magazine only to discover ... Nope.Good luck with this one lasting through the year long subscription.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good magazine
Written with energy. An interesting mix. I would consider this magazine to have some of the flash of "Wired" with the smarts of "Scientific American" with the readability of "Discover" magazines. Enjoyable. It's nice to see a new scientific magazine written this way.

3-0 out of 5 stars Uh...guys, we live in 4 D?!
Is this a mistake?By the fact that the cover shows Chris Mooney is contributing an article I can assume this is a magazine that supports the broadly accepted and widely researched cannons of modern science.Mooney is prolific, level headed and a progressive from what I have seen.

5-0 out of 5 stars Love this Creation Science Magazine for kids!
It is very difficult to find magazines that teach a Creation view. This is an excellently done magazine. My kids love it! Ages 3-12

5-0 out of 5 stars Nature Friend Magazine- Great Zine for Christian Kids
I really like this magazine.I just received our first copy yesterday and am looking forward to future issues. This magazine was recommended to me through my Catholic homeschool curriculum provider as a supplement to the science lessons. What I really appreciate about it is that there are no advertisements included in it.I find it interesting to note that the readers of this 'zine seem to be as young as 7 or 8 and go up to age 14 or so.So, I know that I can use it with my sons for many years to come.

5-0 out of 5 stars My daughter loves this magazine!
Nature Friend is an incredible magazine! It is difficult for fundamental Christians to find periodical materials for children that uphold our beliefs.Nature Friend does just that.It is a Creationist magazine with plenty of scientific information about nature, written for a child's level of understanding. My daughter especially loves all the input from children her age, such as letters to the editor, drawings that children have submitted, and articles and poems written by children. There are plenty of activities in each issue as well. Both my daughter and I love the "how to draw ____" page! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Great magazine, but don't buy it here
This is a fascienating read. Every week, it offers insightful, absorbing information; and, because it is British magazine, it reports on the UK, Europe, the US, indeed, the whole world (while many US magazines are content to focus on America).
5-0 out of 5 stars pack leader in this field
This magazine is rarely noticed in US bookstores, and is a discovery I am proud of. Unlike other scientific magazines where you find yourself asking, "does the writer understand what he is saying" , NS is very refreshing and clear-headed. As other reviewers have noted, their range is amazing but they have a soft-corner for the modern biological sciences. And it is true, they are aggresively liberal. But if you subscribe to the conservative Economist, they do make a handsome pair.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Brits do it again
Why is it that the English write the best weekly news magazine, The Economist, and the best weekly science magazine, New Scientist? Reading all these English magazines is wreaking havoc on my American spelling ability. The breadth of topics in New Scientist is remarkable, and the articles are pertinent, useful, and very enjoyable to read. If you're a scientist, read Scientific American. Everyone else, read New Scientist. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars One of a kind
FATE is a full-color, 130 page monthly magazine (12issues/year)that delivers a truly one-of-a-kind reading experience. Topics include ghosts and the paranormal, psychic phenomena, ancient mysteries, folklore/myth, and all kinds of other high strangeness. Think the X Files in a monthly magazine. A perfect pick-up for you C2CAM fans out there (which is how I found out about it). You won't be disappointed.
1-0 out of 5 stars Definitely NOT a science magazine
Why this is in the science section is completely beyond me.This is just another rag "exposing" the secret of UFOs, Bigfoot and the Boogeyman. It's a cute read, but so's Weekly World News.Definitely NOT to be taken seriously.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fate Magazine

5-0 out of 5 stars Re-discovered
I was getting this magazine up untill 5 yrs ago when I started travel nursing. I settled down again with a new home and garden and hoped I would get a circular in the mail as I could not remember the name of the magazine, but it took the internet to find it. I loved it because it was about everyday people with the kind of stories, tips etc. that I could relate to. Not all huge mansions with acres and acres of land, and people, who like to get out and potter,to make mistakes (and learn from them) and to get out there and enjoy getting their hands dirty, plant seeds and flowers and enjoy the wonders of nature through the birds, insects and other creatures that come to a garden. I would read it from cover to cover and not feel cheated because I have had to pay for a magazine with 75% advertisments. Why should we pay to read adverts? Anyway so glad I have found it again and can't wait for my first issue to arrive. I do hope it has'nt changed.

5-0 out of 5 stars A FUN birding and flower magazine
I have been a subscriber to Birds & Blooms for over 2 years now. Each issue is loaded with beautiful photographs of different types of birds and a variety of colorful flowers. The magazine is supported heavily by contributions of its readership as many "personal" stories and pictures are published. Each issue typically has one article that focuses on a particular bird (cardinal, chickadee, etc), and then others that discuss butterflies, hummingbirds, flowers, etc. There are 6 issues per year, but they also have Birds & Blooms EXTRA to fill the off months (which I also subscribe to)!Great magazine to read and relax with!

5-0 out of 5 stars What I Think About Birds & Blooms
I've been subscribing for a long time, and, because of my love of birds, flowers, and butterflies (yes, the magazine does talk a bit of butterflies), I've gotten quite into it, too.I like the mixture:Funny stories, garden and bird tips and how-to's,and MUCH more...

5-0 out of 5 stars E Magazine
I've been a subscriber of E Magazine (which stands for The Environmental Magazine) for over a year now and I love it. It is, by far, the best environmentally oriented magazine I've come across. All of the ads are for environmentally-friendly companies and products, I now purchase products at at least 50% of the places advertised in this magazine. E Magazine covers topics all over the world, including global warming, horse meat (popular in Europe), whaling, deforestation, etc. If you are concerned or interested in environmental issues, I would highly recommend a subscription to this magazine. The issues are bi-monthly but are absolutely action-packed and fact-filled. Subscribe today!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Environmental Magazine
I recently subscribed to E! and the two magazines I have read have had some great articles.

5-0 out of 5 stars Finally, Independent environmental reports
E is a publication I recognize for its solid reporting on key issues. But most importantly, it is the independence of the solid, in-depth special reports that is most valuable to me and my fellow environmentalists.Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Can't enjoy a magazine that doesn't come...
I ordered this magazine as a Christmas present in mid-December. In February it still had not arrived. I contacted Amazon to determine the status of the order and was told that they needed to "look into the matter further," they asked me to wait another 7 business days. After 8 business days I still hadn't heard anything, so I contacted them again... and this time they told me that even though I had paid for my order in full that my subscription was rejected and that I'd get a refund in the next couple of weeks. Absolutely absurd... I don't even want to know what would have happened had I not taken some initiative.

4-0 out of 5 stars Geared towards any type of physicist
This is the official magazine of the American Institute of Physics. Members of the society get this by default. Hence, given that the audience is mostly physicists, the level of technical detail in most articles assumes an undergraduate degree in physics. More specialised than Scientific American.Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars not as bad as Skeptical Inquirer, but still bad
First off, let me say that I'm skeptical of the skeptics. I find that their explanations for things usually take as much a stretch of the imagination as most believer's explanations for things.
5-0 out of 5 stars An age of mythology is on decline
Contrary to the popular belief that everything must have 2 opposing viewponts, Skeptic doesn't succomb to that notion. And it's absolutely right in doing so. The fact is, a true scientific methodology doesn't involve 2 opposing viewpoints, and while sometimes scientists come up with diffirent conclusions, only one truth is available.
4-0 out of 5 stars Fine, professional, but could use a few improvments.
First, lest any reviewer challenge my mere four stars, I like "Skeptic." I've been reading it for years, and am a member of the society. Personally, though, I prefer "Skeptical Inquirer," a periodical of the same genre.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Long Live Analog
I have been a regular subscriber of sci fi mags for just about the past 15 yrs or so.It all began with Omni and when Omni folded, I found a a copy of Science Fiction Age.I had been subscribed to it for about 2 years before it folded.I found a few Omni-like glossy mag twins thereafter, but they all folded as well. Finally, I found the magazine of Fantasy and Science Fiction and Analog and have been consistently subscribed to other for the past 10 yrs. Both of the latter are outstanding 'zines but for me, Analog is the best because it satisfies the craving for hard sci fi and *fact* at the same time. If F&SF & Analog ever have to close up shop then I would hope they would merge because then I'd have my hard sci fi, fact *and* horror/fantasy all in a one stop shop.

5-0 out of 5 stars Hard Science SF
Analog brings a dependable collection of hard-science fiction stories, novellas, and frequently, a serialized novel.Almost all of them are worth reading; I'm having trouble thinking of an Analog story that made me give up before reaching the end. While its sister publication Asimov's tends more to the social-SF or more literary forms, Analog sticks to a formula of hard-SF with some recurring features: one factual science article, one speculative science article, and a short SF humor piece (Probability Zero).Analog also has a lively letters column, where editor Stanley Schmidt or the story authors often reply. And Schmidt's editorials are always a good read.5-0 out of 5 stars Reminiscence
I haven't actually read Analog for about 20 years, but it was my introduction to science fiction very nearly 40 years ago, when I shared a flat (sorry, must use American, an appartment) in New York with one of John W. Campbell's editorial assitants!Since then, the genre has provided education, solace, amusement - and some disdain from others - and I despair at how few really good new English SF writers there seem to be.However, anyone (and I do mean anyone) who tries Analog with an open mind will find it a revelation. ...
