5-0 out of 5 stars best travel and adventure magazine
I am mostly a low energy, armchair traveller but enjoy photography and reading about exciting new places and activities. This magazine has fit all these criterias. Outside focuses on exploring different locales that are extremely exciting as opposed to standard vacation hotspots such as Florida, the Carribbean, or Hawaii. The articles transport you to rafting Victoria Falls, deep water dives in South Africa, Alaskan fishing and hiking, plus lots of remote places such as Dominica or the Seychilles. I love how vibrant and rich the photography is and how well covered the articles are. Mind you there is something wondeful about reading magazines that highlight typical vacation spots, but for the adventuresome who like off the cuff travels, reclusive lodges, eco-villages, and remote islands this would be more your speed.

2-0 out of 5 stars Outside USED to be good - now its pulp
(I sent the following letter to their customer service last week)
3-0 out of 5 stars Inconsistent
Outside Magazine and I have had an up and down relationship for many years. At times, Outside seduces me with great journalism, awesome photos, and fun facts.I've loved its fearless tackling of environmental issues and its ability to transport me to truly exotic places. At other times, i question its journalistic integrity, emphasis on the latest and greatest gear, and shameless trumpeting of past successes. At times the advice it gives also seems more aimed at insecurities (you need this gear to be successful, you need to live HERE to live a fulfilling life) than I think a magazine focusing on fun in the outdoors should.

3-0 out of 5 stars They lost me
I used to pick this up regularly until one issue featuring an article listing the most scenic places to defecate was written. I figured by that time, the editorial staff had just about scraped the bottom of the pit toilet not having anything better to write about. Still, there are some good trail write-ups from time to time. They'll have to work harder to get me back though.

3-0 out of 5 stars This magazine has lost a bit in the past couple years....
This magazine used to be a great resource for hard core bakcpackers with articles about transcendent survival stories and epic backpacking opportunities all over the world. In the past couple years they have changed their format drastically and have focused on "regional" editions and over the top gadget and gear coverage for total gear-wonks.
4-0 out of 5 stars great magazine but a bit too close to its advertisers
I look forward to Backpacker every month. It mixes practical trail information about hikes with feature stories, articles about gear, and always has great pictures. Most of the columnists and regular features are also interesting.I find one of them annoying, but I can live with that.

4-0 out of 5 stars good general horse care resource
I find this to contain less technical riding information, a wider appeal to both english and western disciplines, more emphasis on horse care. Good resource veterinary articles and lots of cutting edge information in the horse care world.

5-0 out of 5 stars Equus
I found Equus along time ago in a magazine section of a tack store. This publication has yet to disappoint me. It is very up
3-0 out of 5 stars not for amateurs and mostly medical
I am a thirteen year old amateur rider, and I found this magazine boring and "too imformative".It concentrates on the medical part of owning a horse, with complicated terms.I don't have a horse, and I am more interested in articles about riding and other kinds of care then medical problems in a horse. If you are a vet, aspiring vet, or advanced rider with an interest in the medical part of horsemanship you might like this. For those of you who are not, I would recommend Horse Illustrated, which has articles of riding, care, tack, training and more with a touch of humor. However, Equus is very informative, so that's why I gave it three stars. ... 2-0 out of 5 stars Should be called "Killing Animals in Colorado"
I bought a subscription to this magazine out of excitement at our upcoming relocation to the Denver area.I was hoping I would get a magazine that celebrated all of CO's natural gifts thru essays and photography etc.
5-0 out of 5 stars Beautifully Illustrated & Informative
I really enjoy this magazine very much! The photographs are simply amazing, the articles are interesting & very well put together. It's nice to be able to see parts of Colorado in my own livingroom, & be able to decide where I'd like to venture to, rather than make a blind trip somewhere & be disappointed. The publisher also gives you the option of a free Hunting or Fishing guide to accompany your subscription. I can tell alot of time goes into the structure of this magazine. Kudos to the Publisher of this magazine! ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Helpful Photographs
The very day I recieved this magazine, my hubby was wondering what kind of bird he and his friend had seen earlier that day.Our Birds of the Dakotas book didn't have it listed.I said maybe its a Wyoming bird visiting.I thumbed through the pages and sure enough, right there in a big 3x4 inch picture with identification on the side was the bird he'd seen(the long billed curlew by Tom Ulrich.) I would have to label this magazine a tree hugger resource, with factual reports and call to arms of environmentalists. But if you are looking for great photos of wildlife, this magazines got it. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Massachusetts Wildlife
This is one of the best nature magazines around, highly respected by naturalists, biologists and sportsmen. It has been fifty years at the forefront of superb wildlife reporting, offering exceptional photography, excellent writing and uniform quality of editing. From Cape Cod to the Berkshires, a must for anyone interested in Massachusetts outdoors with tips on wildlife viewing, hunting and fishing. You can also follow biologists in the field. This magazine has a vast variety of information, for instance a recent article on the ecology and conservation of tiger beetles was seminal in its subject, as was one on edible foods and analyzing mammal bones.Great for professionals, laymen, and teachers alike! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars It's never to late for beginners luck
It was June 2003 and I had a friend over to the house, that I had met in Payson AZ. at the Houston Mesa Horse Camp Campground in 2001. A conversation came up about applying for the Arizona Hunt Draw. Immediately my friend, Gordon Halloway's eyes lit up. "Hey" he exclaimed " Do you think a bird like me would have a chance at an elk tag?" Let's take a look at the regulations" I replied. Gordon had worked as a union electrician and a arborust when, unfortunatly he had an accident and fell out of a tree breaking his back. As a result he is permanently handicapped and has extreme limited use of his legs. Wewere reviewing the elk hunt options when we we came across The Champ Hunt for handicapped hunters. I recommended that he apply for this hunt. We went down to the local Arizona Game and Fish office in Flagstaff AZ. The counter staff was very helpful in supplying us with the proper information and paperwork, in order to apply for this type of hunt. Gordon promptly submitted his application to his doctor for approval at the Tucson VA hospital. His doctor gladly filled out the paperwork and encouraged him to get out and do these types of activities. This was Gordon's first attempt at an Arizona Big Game Permit, and as beginners luck would have it he was draw for the Champ Elk Hunt with only 10 permits available. Gordon celebrated his 63rd birthday at my house this summer, and he often talks excititly of this very special hunt. Gordon has a special interest in firearms history, and felt it only proper that he purchase a rifle in the historical 45-70 caliber. Gordon will HAND LOAD his Ruger #1 in an all lead 450 grain bullet, at camp, as our forefathers did in the days of the buffalo hunts. He is spending many hours at the shooting bench to make sure of his accuracy, out of respect for the animal. This will be the hunt of a lifetime for this man, and I am doing all that I can do to help insure it goes off without a hitch. I will be providing a 14 X 16 canvas wall tent to add to the comfort and authenticity of the hunt. I know that this will be a safe and sucessful hunt due to the preparation. Special thanks to the Arizona Game and Fish for makeing this hunt possible for our handicapped citizens. For more information contact me at 928-856-0821.Read more
