3-0 out of 5 stars Owning and Caring for Horses
Horse Illustrated is a monthly magazine designed to appeal mostly to horse owners and to those who have an avid interest in horseback riding, horse care and maintenance, and other related subjects. This publication covers a wide range of topics like care for horses, selecting a breed, finding the best boarding, horse health care, and more. The magazine offers a large number of topics each month that cover the essentials of equine care and most of these are pretty good in covering the basics necessities to keep horses looking and feeling their best. These articles, while not always very in- depth, are generally good and they make the magazine worth reading for the horse owner.
3-0 out of 5 stars Okay magazine
I read some of the other reviews and was very intruiged. Yes, the photography is wonderful. But... if you are an amateur horseback rider, getting Horse Illustrated's book, Caring for Your Horse, or English Riding, or Buying a Horse, etc. would be a lot smarter than ordering this magazine. In a year's subscription, I found two really helpful articles. Some would start out great... and then just meander around and not give much info. There is also a lot more about horse care in here, and not much about riding/training. You could get a book for the price of this magazine and learn tons more.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great Magazine for Horse Owners
Horse Illustrated is the largest equine publication in America and it serves a great audience--the novice horse owner. It is both entertaining and informative. And it is written for an adult audience, not for "younger riders" as some are saying. It's sister publication, "Young Rider" IS. To the person who wrote in about not having any depth: well, Equus on average has only four features per issue! And you know what one of them was this month? An indepth article on photographs of kids on ponies! Like that's useful? And Horse Journal is boring--unless you want to read pedantic article after article on 87 saddle pads or 55 liniments.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Western Magazine!
This is an awesome horse magazine. It's especially helpful for training. I gave it five stars because I think it's great... but It's best for those 1, really into showing, 2, really into Quarter Horses and Paints, and 3, those really into Western. They did have a very helpful and good 'Western Dressage' series by Lynn Palm. It also can be really into showing. So, if you prefer a little English/Western and prefer to just casually trail ride with your Tennessee Walker, this may not be the magazine for you.

5-0 out of 5 stars The best of the west
I subscribe to a LOT of different horse magazines and this one is by far my favorite.Great how-to articles.I also love the profiles they occasionally do on prominent stallions. For the western rider, especially those with an interest in showing, this is the best.

5-0 out of 5 stars Horses Love Riders Who Read Horse & Rider!
Horse & Rider is the best...seriously! It always has new material. There are always great trainers giving you the advice you need. Your horse will love you for it...or so we would like to think! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Love it, Love it, Love it!!
I moved to the US from England just over 18 months ago and was missing my horse magazines that I had grown to love in England. But then I found the Practical Horseman and I love it.I find the articles extremely interesting and informative.I love being able to have tips from the experts without having to pay lots of money. From pleasure riders to competitors everyone can learn something.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great articles but too many ads.
I love Practicle Horseman. It is probably the best English equestrian magazine out there. My only problem with it is that it tends to be FILLED with ads after reading you will feel like half of it was just ads.But the articles ARE wonderful.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent and Informative for all Equestrians
I have been riding for over 15 years and I consider myself more or less knowledgable when it comes to our sport (I am a hunter/jumper rider and competitor); but this magazine constantly reminds me of how much more I have to learn. It is truly an excellent resource for any equestrian!Every issue is filled with interesting, well written articles. There are so many how-to articles, riding explanations, and interviews with/articles about many of the sport's top riders that provide the reader with a wealth of knowledge, ideas and techniques.

5-0 out of 5 stars Ultimate resource for all levels of dressage
For a publication that covers many different levels of dressage, it appeals to just about anyone interested in the pursuit. No one should forget the basics, and even the lower level riders enjoy reading more advanced information, it shows us where we are going! Who's who, show news, technical info, and fun to read stuff that has an appeal to all equestrians interested in improving their riding.

4-0 out of 5 stars the closest thing to free riding lessons
This is great if you are deeply engrossed in the world of dressage, but a bit tough to comprehend if you are just trying to get your feet wet. They have great articles writen by top riders, how-to and step-by-step riding articles with beautiful photos that clearly illustrate the topic. For the price, it's an indespensible dressage tool, especially if you don't have regular acess to a trainer.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Magazine for Dressage Riders...
I applaud the puplishers, authors and photographers who show their talent in this magazine. This is one of the best magazines I have read that is truly commited to the discipline of riding that it claimes to represent. The articals are well written and well presented. The lessons are all great for any rider at any level of training.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Western Horseman
This magazine in particular focuses on training tips and the whos who of our beloved horse world. It has great advertisements
5-0 out of 5 stars Was there when it started.
The Western Horseman is THE horse magazine. It started in 1936.My mother wrote an article that was published in Volume 2, Number 4 in 1937.It was about the cowboys in New Mexico along the Pecos River. The ranch was the Turkey Track. I would like to have the issue, but over the years it disappeared. We, she and I raised horses for many years in Kansas and Oklahoma until a back injury slowed me down. 5-0 out of 5 stars The classic horseman's magazine!!
I can't remember when I started reading Western Horseman. My mother had a subscription back in the fifties, even though we had Arabians and half-Arabians.As the title suggests, Western Horseman is a magazine for western horsemen.Back in the fifties you wouldn't see an English saddle in the magazine. However, I read it cover-to-cover then and I read it that way now.Even during the time I couldn't own a horse, I read Western Horseman.Nowdays, they occasionally include a horse with an English or, more likely, an Australian or Endurance saddle among all those western stock seat saddles. But that is fine.Western Horseman is what it claims to be, the premier magazine for western horsemen even if they don't live in the west or ride stock seat. The magazine is full of information about western stock horse disciplines.Their articles are basic and practical.Their writers are people I have never met but whose names are as familiar to me as my next-door-neighbor.They write about horse people. I have learned about rodeo clowns, bullriders, cowboy poets and western artists as well as horses. They write about the western way of life and those people who try to preserve it even as it changes around them. So, if you buy Western Horseman, and I hope you do, don't expect to read only about horses, although you will find plenty about horses.Expect to read about western horsemen in all their variations. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Okay Info
This magazine has some good trainting and horse care tips, but I think it is overpriced. Also, the title is pretty lame. I mean, c'mon, trust me I know, there is NO such thing as a perfect horse.
4-0 out of 5 stars Good Base to Build
John Lyon's has taken what good horsetrainers have done for years and put into an easily read and digested format. His methods of horse management and training reflect the current trends in this field. The magazine is thin, but full of information.I personally like the fact the magazine comes pre-punched for insertion into a three-ring binder. This allows you to have your collection with you at the barn or at an event.Lyon's articles provide information for the novice to the expert. The writing style is crisp and concise.Overall I recommend this for all horseowners whether they are seeking to train their own horse or not.The management techniques and tips are essential to help keep and maintain horses of all levels and disciplines. This is not really a magazine for a non-horse owner. The tips and techniques need to be applied to be effective.A horse lover who does not own a horse may not fully appreciate or understand some of Lyon's nuances.

4-0 out of 5 stars A good investment for the horse owner
I really like John Lyon's training methods and I've read several of his books in his "Perfect Horse" series and "Lyons on Horses".I prefer the series of books rather than the publication just because you're basically getting the same information but in a more organized lesson form.I like the idea of the ad-free format and I'm willing to pay more for a skinny, add-free magazine, but Lyons tends to push his own training products and books quite aggressively, along with products from companies that he has endorsement deals with.He also likes to throw in biblical quotes.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars No fluff, just informative stuff
I don't subscribe to this yet, but read a friend's issues or go to the library. Each issue is loaded with product information like a consumer's guide for the equestrian.Articles include many benefits and disadvantages of equine health products. No advertisements AT ALL, just informative, readable articles and advice.

5-0 out of 5 stars excellent advice and product testing
This magazine offers informative and helpful articles comparing equine products useful in all disciplines. I have found the recommendations to be spot on and constructive, the chartsuseful and easy to read. Anyone who shops for horse items will find this magazine useful. In addition, it offers concise articles with the latest information on health care includingholistic alternatives (as well doing trials of holistic products).5-0 out of 5 stars Love it- saves money and time.
The horse world is full of so many expensive potions and lotions, you never really now what to buy. This is kind of a horseman's Consumer Reports. They have unbiased reviews of products tested by horse people (and horses). There are no advertisements in the magazine, so they endorse or favor no one. They'll test anything from horse equipment (blankets, saddlepads, neoprene boots), supplements, riding equipment and medications. They field test everything and give you details about how equipment held up under wear and horse abuse, if a hoof lotion really did what it claimed, if a joint supplement really made a horse perform better, etc. They will also tell you where you can get the products. They have invaluable tips on general horse care, too. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars arabian horse world
I first started with this magazine back in 1978 when I was training arabian horses, breeding etc.. The mag was very useful and much larger back in 78 as compare to now. But the quality is still present. I'm also an artist part time and have used the incredible photos as reference in drawing and painting horses and the quality is 1st rate. The story lines I've found interesting and informative. As all mags have the problem of advertisting to keep publishing business, I did not find it to be over board as in some mags and most was related to horses anyways. I've been out of the horse business for 14 yrs now and serve in the Canadian Forces, but I still like picking up an old friend in this mag and see all the new stock from the old stock I use to work with, overall the mag is an excellent breeders guide as to what is out there for the breeder and buyers. Keep up the good work, maintain the high quality and remember why you publish the mag in the first place is why I still buy it, to keep the arabian horse lover's appetite wet. Lee

3-0 out of 5 stars Keep dreaming about million dollar horses
Well, you're not going to figure out the meaning of life from this one, but it's a decent publication if you're not looking for any hard-core information. They don't really cover a lot of serious issues in the horse world, and it's not known for in-depth how-to reports. It's laid out nicely, that is if you can find the actual articles in a sea of advertisements, but most of them are ads for stallions, so it's not all that bad. It's entertaining at best. It's geared towards the serious show riders and sporthorse breeders and aimed on keeping them up to date with who's who of the horse world. Not a good choice if you're trying to get your feet wet in the horseworld.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great Magazine for the Sport Horse Breeder!
I found this magazine to be very helpful for the average sport horse breeder and rider. It has specialized issues that interview individual breeders and allows them to speak about what is happening in the sport horse world. It also has specialized issues for Dressage, Eventing, and Jumping that give training advise.I would recomend this magazine for those who are interested in keeping up to date with the sport horse breeding industry or just what to get good information about the horses that they are riding.

2-0 out of 5 stars Lots of pics, lots of ad's, and a little info
I frequently found articles to be about the same people who advertised in this magazine, so it was like the articles were pretty biased. I didn't expect the whole thing full of controversy, but it seems like fluff. The classifieds are very complete and useful. ... Read more

Editorial Review

There is no finer human endeavor than putting a solid slide stop on a quarter horse. All right-thinking people know this, and in support of this belief the good folks of the National Cutting Horse Association provide 300 glossy pages each and every month. Bloodlines, cow sense, and the gazillions of dollars to be won at various futurities are discussed with wit and wisdom from both ol'-time wranglers and the elite in veterinary science. Like the sport, the magazine has come a long way from the early days--the original issues, delivered in 1949, were four-page mimeograph jobs. From Wimpy to Bet Yer Blue Boons and all the Peppys and Pocos in between, it's all here. Whether you're trying to figure out if you should start your baby in a bosal or a snaffle, or a regular at the Chevy Truck Championship Futurity, this is the magazine for you. Read more
